Detroit Tigers II: Aces High

Since their sweep at the hands of the Angels to close the first half, a lot has been made of the Yankees’ struggles this year against potential playoff teams (0-8 vs. Boston, 2-4 vs. Angels, 1-2 vs. Phillies). The exception to that trend is the Detroit Tigers, who dropped two of three to the Yankees in Detroit back in late April. The Tigers have been atop the AL Central since May 10, but, tellingly, can be stung by the same criticism given their 2-7 record against the Red Sox, Yankees, and NL Central leading Cardinals.

The Tigers are a good team, but they’re not a great one. Their offense has been average, their bullpen unexceptional, and their rotation top heavy. That last is the primary reason they’ve lorded over the Central thus far this season. Despite a rough start, 26-year-old Justin Verlander is having his finest major league season having gone 10-2 with a 2.22 ERA dating back to his confrontation with the Yankees and CC Sabathia in late April. Behind him, 25-year-old Edwin Jackson is finally delivering on his prospect promise in his seventh (!) major league season, dropping his walk rate to 2.6 BB/9 and going 8-4 with a 2.26 ERA and 11 quality starts in 12 turns since May 9. Twenty-year-old rookie and Morristown, New Jersey native Rick Porcello has been solid behind those two, but Venezuelan sophomore Armando Galarraga has been inconsistent, and the fifth spot remains unclaimed.

Coming out of the break, the Yankees have the ill fortune to catch both Verlander, who will rematch with CC Sabathia tomorrow, and Jackson, who will face Joba Chamberlain on Sunday. That makes tonight’s game against 23-year-old rookie lefty Lucas French, who is making just his third big-league start, the key to the series for the Yankees. An eighth-round draft pick out of high school in 2004, French seemed to make a leap upon reaching Triple-A this year, posting his best ERA, strikeout, and walk rates since rookie ball. French made two scoreless relief appearances for the big club in mid-May and was recalled at the beginning of July to take over the fifth spot in the rotation. After a short, but solid start against the Twins, he beat Zack Greinke and the Royals his last time out by limiting Kansas City a solo homer and five other harmless hits in six innings. That was impressive, but facing the Yankees in the new Yankee Stadium will be a much better test.

The offense behind French has a slightly different look than it had when the Yankees were in Detroit in April. Most notably, a .260/.330/.343 performance has cost 2007 batting champion Magglio Ordoñez the bulk of his playing time. He’s now the short side of a right-field platoon with 25-year-old sophomore Clete Thomas (.265/.339/.500 against major league righties this year). Similarly, Josh Anderson’s glove has proven unable to sustain his bat in left field, resulting in increased playing time for backup Ryan Raburn (.269/.346/.496 on the season). The eternally fragile Carlos Guillen is back on the DL and has yielded his DH spot to power-hitting ex-Yankee Marcus Thames, who hit .344 with four homers in his last eight games before the break. Meanwhile, three pillars of the offense this year have been Miguel Cabrera (of course), Curtis Granderson (still struggling against lefties at .194/.282/.291, but plenty dangerous against righties), and, much to my amazement, Brandon Inge, who has never posted an OPS over .780 before but is having a career year at age 32, hitting .268/.360/.515 with 21 homers and 58 RBIs (against career highs of 27 and 83, both from 2006).

A.J. Burnett will reopen the second half against the dangerous version of Granderson tonight hoping to keep his pre-break hot streak alive. A.J. has posted a 1.34 ERA over his last five starts, all of which lasted at least 19 outs. The Yankee offense behind him has Hideki Matsui batting fifth followed by Jorge Posada, Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher, and center fielder Melky Cabrera.

So is Pettitte starting Monday?

That's the game I'm going to.

4 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 17, 2009 5:59 pm

[3] I get to see Mitre.

I was also present for Ponson's first start. The first time around.

5 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 17, 2009 6:01 pm

You look at the Detroit starters on the DL: Nate Robertson, Jeremy Bonderman, Dontrelle Willis, and then reliever Joel Zumaya having been on the DL (twice?) and you have to wonder if babying Phil and Joba the way the Yanks have is not the right move, all things considered. Even those two have had some stinnts of their own, but not like in Detroit... okay, well Willis we expected to be DL'd for an entirely different reason, but all the same Detroit would be right up there with ours and the Red Sox rotation were it not for all those injuries to key pitchers. Whaddaya think?

[7] It will be my fourth game this year, and my fourth totally different set of seats. I'm really looking forward to it. Soon I'll have seen the ballpark from every possible angle.

BTW, I was wondering if you guys could give me your opinion on this picture I took on June 12. I'm usually a awful photog, but I thought this came out pretty damn good.

13 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Jul 17, 2009 6:45 pm

Not bad, Matt. Crop it straight (it's a bit crooked) eliminating most of the dead space on the top and the ribbon board on the bottom and it'll look even better.

14 The Hawk   ~  Jul 17, 2009 6:46 pm

[7] Oh I can play almost instrument - poorly. ; )

The only thing I was "trained" on was trombone, and I guess violin but only tlll I was twelve. I play neither now though.

[12] I like it.

15 thelarmis   ~  Jul 17, 2009 6:58 pm

[14] i dated a trombone player in college. i had to play all the orchestral instruments, 'coz i was trained to be a band director. trombone, is SUPER difficult! there are plenty of great ones here in this city and one of 'em is a dear friend of mine.

[11] HA!!! i had no idea how early. stock the fridge now - eventually it'll be 9:30 at night! ; )

16 The Hawk   ~  Jul 17, 2009 7:04 pm

[15] Yeah when I was in high school, I think people always marveled that anyone could play the trombone, because of the slide I guess. But when it's the first or one of the first things you learn, it doesn't seem tricky at all.

Trombone players are mischievous, or at least that was my experience as a teen. Especially in an orchestra where you're sitting around a lot. On the other hand I don't think I ever knew a troublesome female trombonist.

1. He's not stretched out
2. He's not the eighth inning guy, yet
3. You have to save him for tomorrow
4. It's raining
5. The bottom of this inning has been long, so he's sitting
6. You don't want to mess with a good thing and keep changing his roles

[269] Only downside is that MLB.TV is doing its free preview (a "reward" for voting in the "Final Vote" All-Star slot) at the same time. I wish they didn't overlap, then I could see more games. C'est la vie. I might give it a try anyway.

[301] How many outs has Francouer made? The Mets are toast. I still can't believe they dealt for such an out-maker. Probably they had to act fast, before Dayton Moore could take Meche or Greinke for him.

Hmm . . . a full season of EI costs what, $180? A half season of EI - less than that, really - costs $139?! Something tells me they aren't making any money off of that.

It was fabulous, thanks. I think Montana was my favorite. Not only is it spectacular in natural beauty and rich in history, but there are some really charming towns that this NY snob found potentially quite livable (bookstores, cafes, etc.), especially Missoula. [355] One particularly sweet spot was a ghost town accessible only by an unpaved road up a mountain. Along the road, we saw two cars that had fallen off the road from like the 1930s. Just lying there, like fossils. Rusted hulks, antique looking things. Like Pompeii or something. No one ever bothered to remove them and now they stand silent witness to the long ago past. Really eerie, really beautiful.

367 Shaun P.   ~  Jul 17, 2009 10:32 pm

[354] Never really liked Megadeath myself, always preferred Metallica. No particular reason.

I have not forgotten, however, Woodstock '99. While things burned around the main (east) stage when the Chili Peppers finished up, and fights and chaos ensued - on the smaller (west) stage, Megadeath played out their set with not a single incident to be seen, and then came out for an encore or two. The people around the smaller stage had no clue of all the f'd up stuff happening around the bigger stage.

If, in advance, someone had given me betting odds on where the problems would have been that last night, the people watching the Red Hot Chili Peppers, or the people watching Megadeath - I would have lost a lot of money.

'Cause "Five Magics" and "Dawn Patrol" make me giggle ...

Mustaine can barely sing and can't really write his way out of a wet sack lyrically, sure it's pretty tits in complexity and execution, but half the time i'd wouldn't really call it thrash and the other half it sounds like bits i've heard off the previous three albums.

Like I said, give me "Peace Sells", RtL or MoP, some Sepultura, "Reign in Blood", hell, give me a couple of Anthrax albums, or Overkill's first ...

The vestal virgins, wheel the wyvern's in
Let the ceremony
consecrate the marriage
Let me be the protege
Of five magics
Give me alchemy
Wizardry
Sorcery
Thermatology
Electricity

Oh, the things you'll forgive for a complex time signature ...

[398] i like Slayer, but i don't consider them in the top 25 of thrash metal bands. i do adore Seasons in the Abyss.

(i know i'm gonna catch hell for the above, but whatever...)

[399] yes, odd-meter RULES!!! : )

Yay baseball!

403 Just Fair   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:03 pm

Burn Baby is not only a great Rain Man quote, but also a nice Thrash Metal band name. : ) Let's finish this puppy.

404 The Hawk   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:04 pm

[400] Yeah that's crazy talk.

405 thelarmis   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:05 pm

Royals are choking. i knew that would happen once OYF stated the score...

looks like we're about to have baseball in da bronx.

i gotta make a beer run though...

406 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:05 pm

I just hopped on to say the tarp's coming up, but I see you know that.

I also see I've missed some sort of metal conversation. Let me just say that Rust In Peace is my favorite album from that genre (thrash or whatever you want to call it) by far.

407 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:06 pm

Gotta love Jeter pulling the ball.

408 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:06 pm

Another two hits and a walk for Jeter. He'll pass Lou by August.

409 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:06 pm

[400] I could see "not my favorite" or "not the best (IMHO)" but "not in the top 25"?????? Now that's just *crazy* talk.

Now you're gonna have to try and name the 25 thrash bands you'd put before them.

=)

410 thelarmis   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:07 pm

[404] : )

[406] you are very wise, my friend! that is the general consensus about R.I.P. - it just...rules!!!

411 Just Fair   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:13 pm

[410] You are to alcohol as I am to thrash metal. lol.

412 thelarmis   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:17 pm

[409] i've been thinking just that!!! okay, maybe not 25 - i was exaggerating. i do like Slayer a lot and have all their albums. i don't love Reign in Blood as much as everyone else. i think South of Heaven and Hell Awaits are both better. the debut is great, too and Seasons is my fave of theirs.

i happen to love A LOT of thrash bands more. some that are pretty well known, like: Testament, Overkill, Exodus, Kreator, Anthrax, Forbidden, Flotsam and Jetsam, Sacred Reich, Pantera, Annihilator, King Diamond and Death Angel.

others are more underground, like: Heathen, Helstar, Intruder, Artillery, Sacrifice, Hexenhaus, Xentrix, Defiance, Toxik, Atrophy, Allegiance, Paradox, Realm and, of course, Whiplash!

413 thelarmis   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:18 pm

[411] i recorded a song called "Blender for the Baby" on a death metal record some years ago. got paid for it! : )

k, beer run time!!!

414 thelarmis   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:21 pm

wait a minute, did Mo just give up an extra base hit? i guess i'll stick around til it's officially over...

415 monkeypants   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:21 pm

It's official...

Detroit ≠ the big boys

416 Just Fair   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:22 pm

All rise to Mo
[414] I had you mixed up with someone else. Whoops. : D

417 thelarmis   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:23 pm

Wahoo!

keepin' pace in the AL East. i really wish we were gaining games though...

418 thelarmis   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:24 pm

[416] yeah, i was wondering what that analogy meant! i didn't get it. but i'm slow and lotsa stuff goes over my head... : )

419 PJ   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:25 pm

Nice door closing Mr. Mo...

Catch yas lata folks!

: )

420 monkeypants   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:26 pm

[417] Not to worry...what matters is the standings at the end of the season, not the day-to-day ups and downs. I'm still confident that the Yanks overtake the Sox. Of course, this belief is predicated on the assumption that they will actually win some games with the Sox head-to-head.

421 The Hawk   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:32 pm

[412] I actually agree about the two albums subsequent to Reign in Blood being better. But the rest is crazy talk!

I don't want to get into a sub-genre thing, but suffice to say some of the bands you put in the same category, I wouldn't. Suffice to say!

422 monkeypants   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:34 pm

Egads...I'm down to watching CFL. I'm not much of a fan, but it's sports and it's on.

423 thelarmis   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:42 pm

[421] yeah man, i hear ya on the sub-genre things. there are so many "categories". i thought of that, too. thrash, speed, power, prog, technical, "true", etc. etc. everything i listed, for the most part, can fit somewhere in the thrash/speed vein. i left out a ton of other groups in metal i like more than slayer, but those genres would be pretty different.

the individual musicianship in Slayer, is just not there, for me. the guitarists are barely ever in key and the solos are really noisy. i know Lombardo is an excellent metal drummer, he's just not near the top for me, personally. he did great on Testament's "The Gathering". i listened to that last night, actually!

424 Just Fair   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:51 pm

[413] I meant smoking.......or brunettes. HA. ; )

425 thelarmis   ~  Jul 17, 2009 11:55 pm

[424] ah, got it. perfect! : )

yeah, thrash metal is definitely NOT for everybody! i love it sooo much though! : )

oh, and at this point...brunettes are MOST welcomed!!!! : ~

426 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:02 am

[425] nope, sorry, you're already on record ... brunettes:favorite girls::slayer:favorite thrash

you'll take yer blondes and yer "other" thrash bands and you'll like it!

=)

427 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:02 am

Maddux on compliments he received today:

"It was very humbling, very exciting," he said. "If I had known I was that good, I'd probably still be playing."

ah, i know he was losing it the last coupla seasons, but i would've loved to have seen him continue to pitch. i think he could've surpassed the next #'s on the Wins list - 363 and maybe 373...

i liked this bit:

Former Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone said he and Cox rarely had to visit the pitcher they called "Mad Dog" on the mound. Mazzone said Maddux once complained "It gets lonely out there" and asked that Mazzone come out to the mound in the sixth inning.

"Sure as heck in the sixth inning he's got a three-hit shutout going and he gets the first guy out and then he's looking in the dugout," Mazzone said. "Bobby goes 'Leo, Mad Dog is looking for you. Go out there and find out if he's OK.'

"I go running out there and he said 'How you doing coach?' I said 'Hey, Mad Dog.' He said 'How do I look?' I said 'You're doing a great job. You've got a three-hit shutout.' He says 'OK, well it was nice talking to you," Mazzone said.

428 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:03 am

[426] hey, are you around? i was gonna give you a call just to bullshit for a few minutes...

oh, and don't forget favorite foods/drinks/vices:
red meat
bacon
cake
coffee
pot

; )

429 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:07 am

Rangers releases El Duque. would anyone here rather see him on Tuesday than Mitre? i guess for nostalgia reasons, yes. i guess for pitching reasons, if we have to go this route, might as well find out how Sergio does. me - i'd rather have Moose on the hill! : )

430 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:07 am

[428] actually was about to head out the door for a party, wanna chat sometime this weekend? (oh and do me a favor and text me something, my last phone got wet and I lost all my numbers when i had to replace it, including yours)

431 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:09 am

Jim Thome now has 557 homers, 1,545 rbi and 43 multi-homer games.

432 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:11 am

[430] no worries, man. have fun at the party! i should be around all weekend. i'll shoot you a text in a minute, just so you my digits again. rock on!

433 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:14 am

[432] Hey man, doing some house-cleaning today, just pulled out Jacki McLean "4,5,6" with Mal Waldron on piano and Art Taylor on drums..trash the thrash, it's all about the jazz, Baby!

434 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:15 am

oh, Thome also now has 1,605 walks. tied with - darrell evans!!! - for 11th all-time.

Oreo's called up a kid David Hernandez to face us on Monday. i hope we don't get URP'ed...

435 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:18 am

[433] i'm actually listening to that Art Blakey BN cd i needed. got it in the mail today! it's 3 Blind Mice Vol. 1 - the live cd from 1962. i already had the hard-to-find Vol. 2. it's the stellar Jazz Messengers lineup w/ Hubbard, Fuller, Shorter, Walton and Merritt!

nice on the McLean! earlier this year, i bought the RVG remaster of that cd! came out in 2007. my man, Hank Mobley, plays one track on that record! : )

436 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:20 am

[433] i hear ya, i cleaned my pad on Monday. got a real estate agent today. having a meeting next week. i'm a-gonna get a move on...literally!

437 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:22 am

[435] wow..look at that lineup in the Messengers, overwhelmingly cool.

things are tough all over now man, no summer bonuses here..less $ to hit the jazz bars maybe a good thing, need to do a lot of writing for my jazz site that's loooong delayed..

you got any gigs coming up?

438 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:24 am

buck showalter has actually been pretty good on bbtn.

439 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:28 am

[437] yeah man, same lineup as Mosaic & Buhaina's Delight. a coupla others w/ similar lineups, but Reggie Workman on bass...

not many gigs, i'm afraid. next week, i've got 3 days of private teaching, but not many lessons on those days - just 2 or 3...

i had a gig next week, but it got cancelled. i'll get a paid rehearsal in its place, but a little less bread. such is the times...

the guitar player i co-lead the jazz trio with is booking 2 gigs for us Sept/Oct. it'll be soooo nice to play Swing again!!!

440 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:28 am

man, I lost the paper where I wrote down the Blue Mitchell album you are looking for..what was it again? Some browsing on schedule for tomorrow afternoon, will ask around about it.

441 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:29 am

[439] Nice! get some YouTube clips up asap!

442 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:31 am

tim lincecum had an in-game WHIP of under 1 and racked up 10 more K's in a ND tonight. giants won in extras. i can't believe they're leading the WC in the NL. and the Rox are only 1 game back...

443 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:34 am

[440] oh, no worries. the one i had mentioned was "Step Lightly". there are a few others of his on BN. i'm not even sure all of them have been released on cd. here's my wish list of his:

BLUE MITCHELL
Heads Up (LP only)
Step Lightly
Bring It Home To Me (LP only)
Collision In Black (LP only)
Bantu Village

the "LP only", is only my speculation...

444 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:40 am

[443] Will keep a lookout for them. I have "Bring it Home to Me"! not on vinyl or cd though, it's on my iTunes..i "found" it somewhere :)

Joe Chambers "The Almoravid" on right now..fantastic hidden gem on Blue Note, he actually wrote many of the compositions on Bobby Hutchersons's records

445 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:42 am

[441] we actually have at least one youtube clip up. it's from several years ago, 2003, methinks. our old bass player was with us. he's subbed for us recently. the tune is a Latin piece - samba (Steve Kuhn's "The Real Guitarist")

446 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:43 am

[444] my mistake, not a BN release! but still great!!

[445] yeah, how can i find it??

447 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:45 am

[444] OMG, The Almoravid is a BN release?!?!?! i thought it was on 32 Jazz! i guess they could've reissued it. and what the hell is an "almoravid"??? with an upper case "A", it's not a misspelling here with Firefox. i guess it's...something. i'll have to look it up on the information highway...

but first, i need to find out about its relation to Blue Note. yeah man, Joe Chambers is a monster! he was terrific w/ Bobby Hutcherson. his compositions are excellent. really out shit! he's an excellent piano player. sometimes, he and Hutch would switch instruments (drums/marimba - my 2 main instruments!). Chambers' older brother was a professional 20th Century avant-garde composer, iirc...

448 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:49 am

[447] knew you would know that record, it's awesome! and YES you are right, was on 32 Jazz! you're a damn music encyclopedia my friend!

Chambers still on 67, he was in his 20s when playing with Hutch..

449 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:50 am

go to youtube. press in derek mccoy. look for the black/white 2003 clip. it's 10 mins long. the text will mention an ice storm in atlanta.

it's not the clearest quality, as far as hearing the drums is concerned. and what's more important than drums - melody? puh-lease! ; )

i'm outing myself for you! hope you enjoy it!!! : )

450 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:51 am

oh Almoravid is Arabic for sure, but don't know what it means..the song titles are all related to Arabia though (Catta, Jihad, Medina) so he must have been studying the region and Islam at that point.

451 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:54 am

[448] : )

i've wanted that record for awhile. there are tons of jazz cd's i want, but i've been mostly concentrating on Blue Note, so i'm letting most of the others slide. when i found McLean's 4,5,6, it was only $6.50 - new and remastered - so i had to pick it up. similar for the recent - and cheap - Pharaoh Sanders cd's i bought on Impulse!

i plan on making another decent sized BN order in a month. right now, i have to concentrate on practicing - my old Fusion trio might be getting back together for a pretty BIG gig next month, so i need to focus my energy on re-learning that insanely difficult and challenging music...

452 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 12:56 am

Got the clip! Swinging!!!

453 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 1:01 am

[449] Catta, is an Andrew Hill tune that is the lead track on Bobby Hutcherson's excellent "Dialogue" album from 1965 w/ Joe Chambers on drums.

454 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 1:04 am

[453] "Dialogue" is an amazing album..but all of Hutcherson is amazing, wish he would tour Japan again..

couldn't find Derek McCoy at allmusic.com, but found a Japanese myspace page actually, has that same clip from YouTube and a few others. hope someone records your fusion gig, and get a promoter for an Asian tour!

455 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 1:14 am

[454] i never check out myspace, but just went. yeah, derek's got some of our stuff there. we did a dvd that night. i see there's a funk improv jam and it's in COLOR! cool. who knew? i forgot about this shit. i do remember my brother digging the drum solo in it. yeah, we wouldn't be at allmusic...

there's a myspace link at derek's page for a guitar cat named Carl Culpepper. he's a crazy genius on a lot of levels. total shredder guitar god, too. i recorded his solo cd and teach college with him...

456 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 1:16 am

[454] oh, if that fusion gig comes to fruition, it'll DEFINITELY be recorded. we'll be opening for a Frank Zappa alum band member! i'm hoping it happens and we get back together full-on. if so, we've got a Mahavishnu project planned (we're mentioned in their biography book!) and that'll get proper cd/dvd distro, i imagine...

457 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 1:21 am

[455] checking out the funk jam now, nice..extra bonus points for getting the drunk business people on their feet!

I will look up Culpepper..the web is so great for hearing musicians 8000 miles away, feel so lucky to have it!

458 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 1:25 am

[457] yeah, sorry there's no straight up jazz on there! the whole rest of that dvd is swing. i have it here - Stella, Billie's Bounce, 4 on Six, Bernie's Tune, A Train, Jordu, Sandu, Solar, etc....

Carl is UNREAL.

hope you dig the drumming...

459 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 1:29 am

[458] You guys were great, that trio ever still active? Drumming is super solid, man..funky, swinging and fluid (even if you don't like hip-hop! :)

and I won't reveal your real name on the Banter..mine is out there anyway if you follow the trail from my site..

really hot here today so NP: some Nigerian Juju guitar again, can't get enough of this stuff! my lady working today so just me and Mr. OK Jazz Jr chilling at home..when I am supposed to be doing housework..

460 thelarmis   ~  Jul 18, 2009 1:39 am

[459] thanks, man! yeah, we're still active! the place where we've had a steady, weekly gig for EIGHT years, just closed down last month, so we're slow right now. that old bassist had been filling in (current one is out on tour), and it was like old times. just tight as hell. of course, we've NEVER rehearsed or anything! : ) just improv...

i actually recorded a hip-hop session several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it!

i didn't see your name at your site, but your friend outed you recently for your anniversary! : ) i'm gonna have to set up all kindsa internet stuff in the coming months, when my percussion cd is finished, so i'll lose my cover then... yes, still always refer here by our screen names!!!!!!

the guitarist from the trio is ridiculously UNREAL!!!

i'm off to the pub. i really need to email you off of here...

Rock On!

461 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jul 18, 2009 1:43 am

[460] Peace out, just going through the rubble here I found an old Babtunde Olatunji cd which has Mickey Hart and Airto Moreira on it..hidden treasure! Have a good one, hope Yanks win while it's slumber time here!
