"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Game On!

The rain has held off all day. Though the skies remain gray and threatening, it seems they’ll get Game One of the ALCS in. I only hope it’s without interruption. Even still, it should be a miserable night to be out there as temperatures dipping into the 30s could get downright icy with some precipitation. In the comments the other day, Sliced Bread compared the weather to an air-conditioned car wash. CC Sabathia has spent his career pitching for teams in Cleveland and Milwaukee, but one wonders if the cold could be partially to blame for his perennially poor Aprils. Either way, here’s hoping he waxes the Angels tonight.

As a sort of pregame show, here’s the latest Bronx Banter Breakdown staring Alex, myself, and Ted Berg talking Yankees-Angels ALCS. My massive series preview is the post below this one. We can’t get any more ready. Play ball!

I feel much more confident tonight than I did last week. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing.

A couple of innings ago, Caray stated that Phillies bullpen had been so good for most of the year .... uh huh

18 ms october   ~  Oct 16, 2009 7:02 pm

i didn't see any of pedro's outing - why did manuel pull him - he ran out of gas or lifted for a ph?

[16] yeah cliff's previews are wonderful

19 JeremyM   ~  Oct 16, 2009 7:02 pm

Utley really is turning into Knoblauch. He was lobbing a bunch of throws in there last night on routine plays, it was deja vu all over again.

My God, how many pitcher changes do you need to make? Should've stuck with Pedro- it's reverse Grady Little disease.

Man, this is killing me. I don't know how I'll ever make it over these 7 or so games- thank God I know you guys are living and dying with every pitch as well.

20 ms october   ~  Oct 16, 2009 7:03 pm

[17] one of the dipshits also said that because chan ho park used to be a starter that would help him slow down la's running game

21 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 16, 2009 7:05 pm

Ah.. 7:57 first pitch time..thought it was 7:57am local time here..time for Jazz Jt to watch Curious George on tv first then..

25 ms october   ~  Oct 16, 2009 7:14 pm

26 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 16, 2009 7:17 pm

If you want something to do til game time .... Emma's enemy Terry is currently losing on Jeopardy ...

27 Diane Firstman   ~  Oct 16, 2009 7:21 pm

[28] how could you stand to watch him again?

30 Sliced Bread   ~  Oct 16, 2009 7:32 pm

[0] thanks for the mention, Cliff. Not quite the air-conditioned car wash I was expecting, but it's dank out there. I'm just glad the snow melted off my roof out here in NW Bumphuck, NJ, and my Direct TV dish is thawed out and receiving.

LET'S GO YANKEES!

31 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 16, 2009 7:36 pm

How's the weather looking? Sunny, crisp autumn morning here!

Watched the first round of the Japanese baseball playoffs last night, they give the first place-teams a "bye" in the first round, I like it!

The Rakuten Golden Eagles beat up the Softbank Hawks last night 11-4. the Golden Eagles are managed by the VERY grumpy Nomura Katsuya..one of the greatest baseball players of all time! He played 25 years as a catcher and hit 657 home runs (admitedly a very small stadium in those days, but still impressive).

[156] No, but the schmuck was also on his cellphone. Way to enjoy the game.

158 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:38 pm

Damn, has Lackey's ball always had so much movement? I mean, I'm sure it has, but I've never quite noticed it before.

Man, we're going to pound this ugly mf next inning.

159 seamus   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:38 pm

Game looks ok on TW now. Really weird that that's happened more than once on different networks ... or maybe not, I don't know what I'm talking about.

165 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:40 pm

Hello everyone! Do we know if anyone is braving the elements at the game tonight? (Sucks that you have to brave the elements at home, seamus!)

Looks like things are going quite well so far - and whoever said thanks to Scioscia for playing Mathis over Napoli, let me second that!

166 The Hawk   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:40 pm

Jeter as a little boy really looks like a Peanuts character.

178 JeremyM   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:43 pm

I know this is a constant theme, but the announcers are so bad. I mean, talk about boring and trying to suck the life out of a big game.

181 monkeypants   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:44 pm

CC looks good...I like. I also like two quick runs, capitalizing on Angels miscues. One solid hit and pile of bloops and pop-ups...not so good.

182 thelarmis   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:44 pm

i'm still NOT rooting for boBBy! : )

My gosh is CC something else or what?

188 seamus   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:46 pm

[183] he's not. he is actually really good. Heck I had him here on thanksgiving. He told me the details but I think the crux is that they need major parts.

189 monkeypants   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:46 pm

192 JeremyM   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:47 pm

I agree, let's jump on Lackey now. As bad as that play was by the shortstop, it really bugs me how he glares at his teammates when they screw up. Didn't Jeter chew a pitcher out for that once? Wells maybe?

193 Emma Span   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:48 pm

I've always said that, sure, they have beautiful weather in California all the time... but it MAKES THEM SOFT, because they don't get used to suffering like we do.

True, I was just saying that to make myself feel better. But maybe there's something to it!

[knocking on wood]

194 Just Fair   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:48 pm

Blow these bastards out. Sit on that lame-ass Lackey fastball.

196 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 16, 2009 8:49 pm

Thanks.

464 Sliced Bread   ~  Oct 16, 2009 9:57 pm

I'm still going over that ARod play at the plate, and guessing ARod was trying to protect his hip by not sliding. Booking home the way he was, he was forcing a perfect throw. Unfortunately they executed. Good aggressive baserunning. Should he have slid? probably would have been safe, but he knows his body better than any of us, and maybe in the moment he thought he shouldn't risk it. At the last second when he realized the throw had beat him, he turned his hip. Thank God he's okay. Holy shit that was close to a crushing injury.

465 JeremyM   ~  Oct 16, 2009 9:57 pm

Abreu was OK around the wall on those kinds of plays where he could slowly back up to it, as I recall.

466 Bobtaco   ~  Oct 16, 2009 9:57 pm

How much longer can they keep Lackey in there? He's got to be getting close to being done.

467 JeremyM   ~  Oct 16, 2009 9:58 pm

[466] He's a little scared to go to his bullpen I think.

468 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 16, 2009 9:58 pm

[456] If we get lucky, the Yanks will sweep the LCS and then the Serious, and we'll only have to put up with Timmeh for 7 more games.

Ugh.

[452] I am pretty sure that FOX has the broadcast rights only within the US, and not abroad - that's probably why you are getting ESPN announcers. It wouldn't surprise me if they have the global broadcast rights - after all, how would a broadcast (non-cable) network send the signal around the world?

469 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 16, 2009 9:58 pm

[462] I see your point, but Phil was not good his last times out, so I might keep CC in there. 100 really isn't that much for the big guy.

[453] Im thinking forward not backward...he's slated to start three times if the series goes seven games. I was just speculating/wondering if anyone would pull him early to "save" his arm for the rest of the series.

[468] Makes sense. Sutcliffe and the other guy are reading emails from around the world now..people watching in Brazil, UK, Japan, etc...Sutcliffe > Timmy tonight..

I can't wait to see Brian Fuentes in this series, their pen is goign to blow at least one fame...

I would not pull CC if he is effective, other than for Mo. Bob Brenly did that crap with Schilling in the World Series as I recall, saving him for a game 7 while the Yanks were on the ropes in game 4.

I like the play, it was aggressive. I'm not sure when he decided to book it to home, but I think he saw the misplay in the outfield and decided to go for it. It's sure easy to say it was wrong when he was thrown out, but I think putting more pressure on the opponent is a good thing

535 joe   ~  Oct 16, 2009 10:10 pm

[526] True, I realized that just after I posted.

But how is that not an error?

[524] yes

537 monkeypants   ~  Oct 16, 2009 10:12 pm

[535] It should be, and the rule book allows for it, but for whatever reason that is NEVER called an error. Now, if the wind blew it and the ball actually ticked off the SS, it would have been called an error for sure.

538 ms october   ~  Oct 16, 2009 10:12 pm

[531] why?

540 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 16, 2009 10:13 pm

[535] No one touched the ball, and who's fault was it? My mind, the SS gets the error as he is in charge, but also in better position (behind the ball) to catch it.

541 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 16, 2009 10:13 pm

Are you effing kidding me, Buck? CC has "really matured as a pitcher"? When, this year? Oh you have got to be kidding me.

[539] I've always cheered for the team playing the team that beat the Yanks, going back to 1997 - except when it would require cheering for the Red Sox (though I don't think it has). That was my primary reason. My other was because I was tired of hearing about Erstad and Eckstein and their scrappy goodness. Having Bonds and Kent beat them would have been very satisfying.

547 Emma Span   ~  Oct 16, 2009 10:15 pm

549 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 16, 2009 10:16 pm

[541] Good find. These guys talk in one running cliche. I don't think they have any stats other then what is given to them.

They talk about Abreu like he's a golden God.
For Swisher they said he 'wasn't a great OFer' and 'only batted .249'... but was great in the clubhouse. What they failed to mention was Swish had a better year then Abreu both at bat and in the field

550 monkeypants   ~  Oct 16, 2009 10:16 pm

Ack, Napoli. Go get him, CC!

I hope he comes in as a pinch hitter in every game. The more PAs Mathis gets instead of Napoli, the better.

[549] Cliches indeed. All they do is repeat the same tired bullshit the tradmed has been peddling in advance of this game. Listening to their "preview" was excruciating. "The Angels will run on the Yanks' OF arms, especially Damon." "Sabathia struggled against the Angels this year, going 0-2."

564 51cq24   ~  Oct 16, 2009 10:19 pm

[734] I know. I hate to see either of them go, but you're right, we can't have them both. They're both so consistent it's hard to know what to do. Plus, I like them both a lot. I'm partial to Hideki, though, probably because Damon's always going to be the guy who killed us in Game 7 when it comes down to brass tacks and Hideki's our guy.

742 Yankster   ~  Oct 16, 2009 11:08 pm

[719] "20 pitches shouldn't throw off a horse like CC?" Based on what? Short rest seems to have thrown off CC last year. But suddenly he's a tough scrappy guy and his workload doesn't matter?

Sure, if the bullpen was tired, yanks were only up by a run, or anything else conspired to make it a high leverage situation, fine: play today, win today, but three run lead, two innings to go with the best bullpen in baseball and you take the extra pitches out of Sabathia when he'll pitch on short rest? That seems like the low payoff formula to me.

Especially since this game didn't go all bloody night long. 3 hours, 18 minutes - beautiful. Now we can rest up for tomorrow night!

Good night all.

Great Game, read ya'll tomorrow.

[751] yes he did start on short rest repeatedly in 2008: 9/20, 24, 28 losing one of the three and then lost his next start giving up 5 runs in 3 2/3 innings for a playoff short rest ERA of 12.27. Sounds like a great plan?

Was out all at the Outback watching the game. I'm very happy.

[799] right, so don't you see a difference between that and starting on short rest once after an 8 inning performance following a week+ off?

[794] I love November baseball!!!

What happened with the Yankees?

805 monkeypants   ~  Oct 16, 2009 11:31 pm

[801] I agree with you...but I'm not sure that having the long layoff really matters. I'm pretty sure that pitchers can't "store up" extra pitches (I haven't thrown in a week coach, so I'm good for 150 pitches tonight). Ultimately, I don't think ~115 pitches is all that much for CC, but at the same time, if he is going on short rest AND if the team was in a position to do so, surely it couldn't have hurt not to press him tonight?

Big Fella's going to sleep well tonight. Johan Santana may toss and turn a little...........

807 51cq24   ~  Oct 16, 2009 11:35 pm

[805] well i think it was borderline on whether they were in a position to do so. the way he was pitching, i think he was definitely the best bet for the 8th inning. and while you can't really store up on extra pitches, surely it makes a difference that he's had so much rest lately. anyway, my main point is that one extra inning isn't going to make a difference in this context. if he had been worked a lot lately, that would be different.

[807] I agree again...that's why I kept hoping for a tack-on run or three.

[806] Oh, well-done sirrah!

CC can handle 113, I don't see the big deal. 140 is pushing it..(remember when David Cone threw 156 pithces?!?!)

810 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 16, 2009 11:36 pm

Hideki's hit was huge. That set the tone.

[809] remember when David Cone threw 156 pithces?!?!

Yes. And I remember the outcome.

813 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 16, 2009 11:39 pm

Studies show that the RPS (Rest Pitches Stored) is based on size, and is: PS% = (6 * Waist size) / rest days / pi..
In CC's case, this is about 9%, so CC saved about 10 pitches due to rest.

814 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 16, 2009 11:40 pm

[812] Oh I know..I meant that, 113 for CC is really not a huge deal..it's 140+ when you're asking for trouble..

watching the postgame on Yes. Are these guys on speed? Talking fast as hell!

817 51cq24   ~  Oct 16, 2009 11:54 pm

[816] cone is the best. what a character. and he actually knows what he's talking about, he doesn't just say what everyone else says (like he actually pointed out that since abreu signed, only one angel, figgins, has actually walked more than he had last year)

[817] potential top-10 player drinking buddy, alongside Oil Can Boyd and David Wells.

bottom-10 would have to start with Billy Martin..small, wiry guys who drink too much are always looking to fight..

819 Yankster   ~  Oct 17, 2009 12:34 am

Of course 113 is no big deal for CC, when he's pitching on regular rest. 123 is no big deal on regular rest. But even CC seems (looking at last year) to be less effective on short rest after pitching a lot.

Also, of course keeping CC in would have been the best strategy for winning this game had it been close, and I agree that no harm was done to him with his pitch count this game.

What I'm saying is that maybe it's a good idea to cap CC at 200 pitches in any four days if you don't want to slow him down. Certainly he has a track record of throwing poorly in the past after throwing 220 pitches in a four day period.

Certainly there's a very strong track record that a lot of pitchers throw poorly when their workload gets to 200 pitches in a four day period - that's why it's called short rest and why it's rarely done. CC has shown the same pattern in the past, but maybe he's become grittier since last year - who knows?

It's not his arm I'm worried about, by the way, it's winning his next start.

Anyway. Clearly I'm in the minority here, which means, hopefully, that I'm wrong.

[819] the problem is you're only talking about the last of those starts, when he gave up 5 runs in 3.2 innings against the phillies in the division series. the previous 3 starts were also made on short rest, and he only gave up 2 earned runs 21.2 innings, including a shutout against the cubs (his 3rd consecutive start on short rest). in those 3 starts he had a 0.83 era, a 0.88 whip, and 5.25 k/bb. he pitched 253 innings (256.2 total) last year and 230 (now 244.2) this year. i don't think it's fair to compare one start on short rest after a full season of regular rest or longer to his 4th straight start on short rest last year.
