Today’s update is powered by . . . Man vs. Food (baseball food)
“They’re the World Series champions from last year and I have a chance to compete and get some playing time,” Winn said in a phone interview Tuesday night with The Associated Press from the Bay Area where he still lives. “I thought it was a great fit, being a versatile guy who can play all three outfield positions and can hit anywhere in the lineup.”
. . . “This came together quickly. The offseason was slow,” Winn said. “I didn’t really know what to expect. I got calls with interest but no offers.”

- Yahoo Sports offers this Free Agent Tracker, with this amusing note on a catcher we all know:
122. Jose Molina, C: If the Yankees re-sign him, A.J. Burnett should be forced to pay half his contract.
- Bernie Williams soaks up his musical legends:
Williams appeared on stage Monday for the “Triple Guitars Night” at Feinstein’s at Loews Regency in New York, joining noted musicians John Pizzarelli and Earl Klugh to raise funds for Ed Randall’s Bat For The Cure charity and its fight against prostate cancer.
“It’s a great thing, especially for me,” Williams told MLB.com. “I grew up listening to Earl Klugh and John. When I was up in the clubhouse playing my guitar, instead of listening to rock and blues, I was listening to those guys play.
“It’s definitely a dream come true for me to be here and just enjoy the time, especially when it’s for such a great cause like this.”
“To me, it was just like a master class,” Williams said. “Eric has some tunes that he wanted the band to go through at sound check, and I was just checking his technique, his chord changes and the whole interaction with the band.
“When I started feeling comfortable playing a note here and a note there, it was like being in a master class. That’s probably one of the things I will remember most about this night, just being there when nobody was in the crowd. It was just me and those two great guitar players.”

Back on Monday.
Nice! I really enjoy John Pizzarelli (even though he is a Red Sox fan) and Man v. Food (Adam is a Yankee fan). Bernie is not much older than Pizzarelli though, so he can't love hearing that Bernie grew up listening to him.
"...and can hit anywhere in the lineup."
I confess, I have never really understood statement.
Scratch & Winn sounds like he knows how lucky he is.
[2] I've always taken that statement to mean "wont cause a fuss if asked to bat at the bottom of the order".
[2] Logically, if one can hit, it does not matter where in the lineup one is placed, so yes, its very nonsensical . . . but I do like william's take in [4]. "can" is really the word that causes the trouble . . .
How long until pitchers and catchers? Just two weeks? Thank God.
yeah, just a meaningless cliche for a versatile hitter who has some power, a knack for getting on base, and runs well. but most often it seems to be applied to players that william described
I have a funny feeling we're going to return to the bad Super Bowl this year after two really good ones. Colts by two scores.
oh, and the cliche is usually applied to switch hitters.
[5] I can't wait either, but at least this week the Caribbean World Series fills some of the void. Speaking of which, Jackson Melian, who inspired a thread a month or so back, is playing for the Venezuelan team.
[9] the Winter Olympics also fills some of the void (for me anyway), and as I'm a Syracuse basketball fan by marriage, I'm also looking forward to the Big East and NCAA tournaments. Syracuse has a great team this year, a lot of fun and easy to root for because nobody saw their success coming. I'm hoping they go all the way.
2009 Saints = 1986-89 Broncos...this might get ugly
we are less than 2 weeks from Pitchers and Catchers, WE CAN DO THIS GUYS!!
[5, 11] Don't forget. Joba is going to show up a few days early. : )
[12] Ideally after a SHAVE. Yeesh.
[10] Right...I love the Winter Olympics too. For some strange reason, I really enjoy watching curling and some of the other more obscure events.
WHO DAT
[10] I don't remember even the Winter Olympics being this "cold," pardon the pun. The hype is so non existent that I keep forgetting that they're about to start.
I get into the winter Olympics way more than the summer. I really enjoy the hockey, snowboarding, bobsled, skeleton (those guys are insane), and luge.
I definitely think you'll see an increased buzz after Sunday. Because between Monday and Opening Day we got Olympics, March Madness...and not a whole lot else.
[16] yeah, even though NBC has been plugging the Games for probably 2 years now, it kinda snuck up on me too.
The lack of hype may be a good thing, as the story-lines haven't been beaten to death yet. Or maybe they have, but I'm a casual fan of winter sports, so I'm looking forward to learning about the athletes.
I'm really psyched for the Winter Games, because this is the first time ever that I'll have all the channels so I can watch the less popular events. (I'm done with the figure skating pretty quickly.
[16] [18] Have the Winter Games ever really been hyped? They seem to sneak up each time around (except for the Utah games, which were more prominently promoted).
[10] Sliced, every time you drop something like that, I shake my head and wonder if you're some sort of distant relative of mine. I've been an SU BBall fan since the Roosevelt Bouie days - back around the same time I found TV sports in general. The '87 NCAA loss was heartbreaking - Keith Smart argh - and the '03 win was just a blast. This year's team does seem special. They sure are fun to watch.
SU beating Georgetown is almost as fun as mid Summer Yankee smackdown of the BoSox.
[21]
As a St. John's alum, I'm envious. We haven't been really relevant in about 20 years.
Red Storm .. ? and have you seen our new mascot? (shaking head)

[20] They've been hyped up here in Canadia. If you think I dislike the World Baseball Classic, you can imagine what I think about the Olympics!
[10][21] I'm not much of a BB fan anymore, but I do follow the 'Cuse and the Big Red, so this looks like it could be an intriguing tournament.
[21] I'm not a dyed in the wool Orange fan, but having gone to school upstate in the mid-80's (SUNY Albany), and married a Syracuse girl, I've been following them for more than 20 years, more so than any other college team. I don't feel the Georgetown rivalry like I guess I'm supposed to (always liked Ewing, for example) -- but that was a fun game this year. Crushing the Tar Heels early in the season put everybody on notice that this 'Cuse is much better than anybody thought.
[23] you guys must love Andy Rautins in Canada. Fun player to watch. Kid can shoot.
Earl Klugh was in the family's regular weekend rotation when we piped the music all over the house or we worked/played in the backyard; particularly One on One when he collaborated with Bob James. Good stuff, Bernie!
