"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

New York Minute

Some mornings, waking up is a chore. Maybe you stayed up to watch a late game or your kid had trouble sleeping. Perhaps one kid had trouble sleeping, and then you went into help him, and the other kid noticed, and all three of you ended up crammed into a skinny little toddler bed. Could be that all these things happened on the same night.

When morning comes, every minute is precious. Start by eliminating the shave. The coffee. The tie. The breakfast. Shudder, the shower?

What do you eliminate when you need to save a couple of New York Minutes in the morning?

Breakfast.

Its a little easier to deal with, when you drive to work as I do, but sometimes its just a long wait until lunch time to eat.

I know some people skip shaving, because occasionally I will see someone in the car next to me on the highway shaving. It gives me the shakes. Driving on highways in Massachusetts is dangerous enough.

Does anyone shave on the subway?

[2] I have not seen shaving, though maybe an electric would work. I have also not seen [3], but I have seen someone smoking a crack pipe. C Train, 50th st. Yikes.

I exercise in the morning, so that's definitely the first to go. I also still read a real newspaper (the local rag, SJ Merc) and that goes too, starting from the life and business sections, working my way back towards the comics and sports pages as the last to go. I like to check email in the morning too, but I cut that as well, and if I am really short of time, I skip my am visit to the Banter. But only if absolutely necessary.

Jon, I usually just skip the crack pipe. Sure, it makes it a lot harder to get through the morning, but I've found I actually feel better later. Or less awful.
