Where & When: Game 17

Well, well, well; welcome back to the exciting and intriguing Where & When. Did you miss us? We missed you… holidays are always the toughest days to come back from.  How about we help refocus your brain matter so the rest of your day can be a piece of cake (insert favorite flavor here _________)…

And for your pleasure, how about another piece of cake:

Where & When Game 17

Nice day for a stroll, it seems.  Crazy nice, in fact.  Maybe more than crazy… maybe it was that time of the year, or maybe it was that year.  Well, don’t lose your mind trying to figure out the date; you’ll be really mad when you figure that part of it out.  But if you do… well... (yep, if you understand this one, you and I are on a wavelength that deserves much pity.)

Post your answers below in the comments and feel free to help out and discuss.  I’ll will be peeking in now and again (work work work) and offering some thoughts throughout if I can.

How about some of Dad’s stash if you are the first with the answers, and some Hansen’s Natural for the rest of us, butterfly included.  Now run along and sleuth, chop-chop! (Bonus if you know what all these awful puns are referring to… >;)

Hm.
Usually 'where' is easier. In this case I think I have a good guess at the year: I'll say 1961. But I don't recognize the intersection and I don't see any obvious clues. (And although it's clear Will is trying to give us a clue, I know from past experience that I'm unlikely to figure him out!)

Aha!
I found an image that's a close-up of something in the picture (by searching for that something). So now I know exactly where... and I would like to amend my When guess too: I think it's 1960.

[2] You're much better on dates than I am, I was thinking 1950s. But most of the guys aren't wearing hats, so it should be later.

Figured out the where from the restaurants/bars (White Rose Bar, Horse Shoe Bar & Grill, Harmony Cafe). Even ran into that same pic on Google Image Search (but didn't go to the source page). It's funny, when I saw that it could be the Horse Shoe, I immediately thought of the Horseshoe Bar in the East Village over on B (love that place!), but the neighborhood DID NOT look right. And it wasn't. Different joint altogether. And it seems as if all of those spots were leveled in 1969 in the name of...sigh...progress.

But no idea on the specific when. RIYank's guess of 1960 looks about right. I'll go with that too. Summer, from the look of the folks.

Got it. Right on about the year, as for the exact date, I see lots of short sleeves but the woman in the black dress has a shawl on, so I'm going to guess early September. Not spring as there are no flowers.

I found a different picture, but clearly from the same roll of film. Peter Minuet Plaza is what this area was called. RIYank nailed the date. 1960 it is. The exact date seems to be July 5th. I have no idea what Will is getting at with his clues...

I knew you'd all figure out the location and great guess on the date; now if I were me I'd think about what was going on in 1960 to get an idea about the bonus. Uh, wait....

Crazy, lose your mind, mad, Tell Mama, chop-chop?

Something to do with Psycho? It came out in 1960, but the release date was June 16th. Hmm...

[9] Oh, that's good. Excellent, that must be it.

Nice one Will.

Tee hee. I bet Fearless Leader would have been a little more subtle with the clue >;)

Look how nice and clean the city looked. And that sloped roof three story house in the middle of the picture has to be from the early 1800's.

And Chill, you keep talking about a stroll? "Doing the Stroll" was a hit in 1958. Is that what you mean?

[13] Nice. Everything I say has some unintended historical context these days >;)

[14]You are powerful! What is the definitive answer?

[15] you have to choose to do the right thing (that came to me in a dream, if you meant 'What is the meaning of life?').
