If there’s been one constant in the Yankee Universe over the past 100 years, it has been postseason baseball. There have been a few droughts — 1965 to 1975, 1982 to 1994 — but no franchise in the history of sports has enjoyed such consistent excellence. The Pinstripes have only missed the playoffs four times in the last 26 years, and while the 2009 World Series triumph might seem like a distant memory, we’ve been spoiled.
And so when things were at their darkest back in June and the Yankees were looking up at several teams in the standings, it wasn’t just October baseball that seemed unlikely. It didn’t feel like the Yankees would be playing meaningful games in September. We acted like spoiled children do everywhere. We screamed. We cried. We lashed out. We assured our non-Yankee-fan friends that all was lost, that this was the worst and most confounding Yankee team we’d ever seen. (They were confounding.) We wanted general manager Brian Cashman to sell at the deadline even though the roster had virtually no sellable pieces. We were insufferable.
But then the calendar rolled over into July, and the Yankees were much better. When August arrived they were even better than that, and in the first week of September the team now sits firmly in control of its own destiny. With the offense looking healthier each day (Gleyber Torres was activated on Friday) and the Baltimore Sacrificial Lambs coming to town for a three-game weekend series, all signs are pointing towards October baseball. Again.
Now if the Rays could only lose once or twice…
Stantonian!
Sheeaht. I took a nap and the BP blew the lead. Grrr.
Do the Yankees have a rally in their bones?
I would rather be home than away, but I am not feeling great about this game.
Slight double clutch by Gallo. Sweet. Fucking orioles.
Note to Yankees: You can't lose these games
Beautiful slide.
Jesus Fucking Christ, Gallo!
LeMachine!
[7] Surely the only Yank who could have scored on that fly.
Gallo's really looking stressed.
I'm starting to like these ghost runner innings. At least every extra inning is exciting.
I've been the few ghost runner fans around. Who wants to see an 11-18 inning gamem. It's a waste of time.
Great job, kid! Now win ffs!
Stantonian!
We've come full circle.
I think we just have to accept that everything’s gonna be close with this team. As John Flaherty said the other night, “We thought this game might be a laugher, but this team doesn’t laugh at any games.”
Yankees being no-hit again. Pathetic offense.
Oh, right, these guys.
I remember these guys.
The June Yankees.
(Sterling is trying like crazy to jinx the Os’ no-no, and clearly thinks himself very clever for doing so.)
This is painful to watch.
Maybe he should throw underhand ?
Hey, a lead!
Good day for the Kraken, huh? A k/cs double play, and salami too!
JFC, Gleyber. Inexecusble.
Almost as inexcusable as my spelling.
UNLEASH THE KRAKEN!!!!!
The orioles are just too good.
I still regret not leaving Heaney in the cornfields of Iowa
Yeesh.
The Stanton glove giveth, and the Stanton glove taketh away.
Fun fact (IMO): This team would have been far better off (short term and long term) had they not made any deadline deals and just went with the youngsters.
I would gladly give back Rizzo and Gallo if it meant Heaney and Rodriguez was returned to LA or shot into the sun, whichever is easiest.
Another fun fact: No team has lost as many games to Baltimore as the Yankees and its not even close. NY has 7 losses compared to Tampa's 1. That's the division right there.
Orioles have feasted on the Yankees
Oh, Gleyber.
Can anyone explain why Gil is not on this roster but Kriske is? Also, has there ever been player like Joey Gallo? I don't understand why he even goes to the plate with a bat, because it's never used. I sincerely hope this team missed the playoffs so heads roll.
The most interesting things to watch for the rest of the season are the inventive ways this team loses games. I don't think they are going anywhere if they do make it to the playoffs, but I never would have pegged them to win 13 in a row either.
Well this lineup from top to bottom, minus Judge is boom or bust. No real table setters, no speed. Tyler Wade was batting .400 during the 13 game losing streak and when he went to the bench so did this teams ability to win games. Not that he's the long term answer but for crying out loud ride the guys who are producing and sit the guys who are not. Same goes foe the pitching staff. Boone still managing like it's April, making sure everyone stays fresh. For what? The golf course?
Can't believe they lost 2 of 3 to Baltimore..!
[33] I really don't enjoy players like him, 'three-true-outcomes' players are so boring to watch and so over-rated.
Oh shite..Cole leaving with an injury..
Happy Jewish New Year to any Banterites celebrating!
Well, this season is Toast.
This team can barely win WITH Loasiga and Cole.
They continue to use Heaney in high-leverage situations.
Refuse to promote Gil (maybe they will have to now).
[38] Yep, the YES team going on about Jeter and the HOF induction now. More interesting than this game, for sure.
I am getting word on Twitter that Cole has a blister problem. That's a relief.
[39] Sorry, but I am so over Jeter. Great player, HOF...OK...but this team shouldn't be selling memories.
[41] Who do you think owns the worse franchise, Jeet with the Marlins or A-Rod with the Timberwolves?
As a baseball fan it should be interesting to see how far this Jay's team go. A sweep is likely at this point so that will probably spearhead them to the top wildcard spot. I can't see the Sox getting the home field since that pitching staff is garbage, really a credit to Cora for getting the most of that staff.
Anyway, I say play thr kids and let's see what we have for next year.
[43] Yep, I'd root for the Jays ahead of Tampa any day.
Why is that when I look at Andrew Heaney, all I see is a white flag?
[42]I think Jeet has a chance to make that team a winner again. They seem to have a good supply of young talent. The questions is: can he do it?
[45] Maybe because there's not reason he should be pitching for an ML team trying to make the play-offs.
It's funny, after all this, the Mets actually have a clearer path to the playoffs than the Yankees. The NL East is up for grabs.
Gil working some magic! But it’s come to this, relying on a rookie in a must-win series to keep playoff hopes alive?
Whelp, coulda been worse.
Throws way too many balls, but his stuff looks good.
Gil with little control still only allowed one hit. Heaney could learn a thing or two about not throwing the ball down the middle on every pitch.
Should name these relievers by the one pitch they throw. Wandy Changeup, Cutter Luetge and Please Not The Slider Chapman.
[53] hahahahah!
This game has become real dull..May get Padres/Angels on in the background instead soon
Wow! I was JUST about to bail thinking big ABs for Velasquez and Gardner are painful..good job Gritty!!!
Rejoice!
Gardy cleaning up out of the one hole, just how they planned it.
Anyone still watching this team?
For some odd reason, I got tempted today.
Andrew Heaney is getting ready. Words no one should ever have to hear.
[58] On in the background. The Canucks are going to sweep them. Boone putting Sal Ramano in the 7th with men on was just..exhibit#10,000 why he should be fired?
At this rate one must wonder if Boone has money riding on these games every time Human Home Run Machine Heaney pitches.
Ed Whitson must be watching this and saying to himself, man was Heaney a terrible pickup, and yet they keep trotting him out there day after day after day. Who does this?
Toronto picked up 8 games on the Yankees in 10 days. Even the Redsox, with half their team on Covid protocol, passed the Yankees. May be time to fold this hand.
Time for Cashman to cash in his chips. His methods are toast.
[62] Love the reference to Ed Whitson. This season has reminded me a lot of 1985 because of the various streaks. The ’85 Yanks started 6-10 and George fired Yogi and hired Billy. From there they went 91-54, which is pretty damn good. From August 31 to September 10, the Yanks won 11 in a row to get to 2 games behind the Blue Jays. After splitting the next 2 games, the Yankees lost 8 in a row, then won 2 in a row, and lost another to slip to 7.0 games behind Toronto on September 24. Somehow, they managed to turn around and win 7 out of 8 games to get back to 3 games out with 3 games to play at Toronto. They won the first game but lost the second and that was that.
So, the current Yankees started 5-10, had a 13 game winning streak, and are currently riding a 6 game losing streak (and 10 losses out of 12 games - Yikes!). I don't think we'll be heading into the last series with Tampa 3 games out with 3 games to play, but it might be nice if we could win 7 out of 8 to nail down the wild card.
Whitson was 10-8 with a 4.88 ERA (83 ERA+) over 158.2 innings. There's not a truly comparable pitcher on the 2021 Yankees. Heaney has only thrown 30.1 innings, but he's been terrible (55 ERA+). I doubt he and Boone are going to mix it up in a hotel on September 22, but hopefully Boone will be fired after the season like Billy was.
[65] That ‘85 team sure had a lineup!
Stanton & Voit on the bench?? Why not sit Gallo?
WTF was Sanchez doing there?! Mets TV guys ripping him for that awful play
Gary Sanchez sucks in every aspect of his game.
Sanchez with probably the worst tag attempt I've ever seen. I'll see this until I'm blue in the face, move tour glove to the plate and let the runner tag themselves out. I can't believe how awful MLB players are in slapping a tag on runners.
Was Urshela even trying up there? God what an awful at bat
[69] I wasn't even watching when this happened, but when I heard the Mets radio guys discussing the play and telling me the Mets had stolen a run, I thought of you right away and knew it must've driven you crazy.
Sanchez other than the occasional homer is just not a very good player.. ☹️
If we accept that Sánchez will never be the MVP candidate he once projected as, we'll realize he's one of the three or four best offensive catchers in baseball. He's never going to win a Gold Glove, but he hasn't been as bad defensively as he was last year. I think most teams would love to have a catcher that hits seventh or eighth in the order and gives them thirty homers.
I think the most frustrating thing about these 2021 Yankees is that as I sit here watching Montgomery face Alonso with the bases loaded in the third inning, I feel like the game is on the line.
[73] Of course, I realize he's cost the Yankees two runs tonight.
This is unwatchable. Little league type plays this inning
[75] Hi Hank! Gary doesn’t hit for any average though, he seems to have regressed.
Just awful baseball tonight, and we e yet to even get to Boone’s bullpen choice..
Here's a question that needs no answer -- How do you think George would've responded to how the Yankees have played against the Mets this year?
[78] Boone would have already been long gone! And Buck would have been rehired, you know how George loved the carousel.
Is Boone even fucking awake?? How do you leave Montgomery in this long?
So many little things costing the Yankees runs this inning. A bases loaded walk, Urshela and Sánchez botching the play at the plate, Monty allowing the runner to get to second on the rundown... just an utter embarrassment.
Only top of the 4th? Excruciating game, will have on as get some house chores done. Even Kay is criticizing Boone now, not doing the IBB to get the pitcher up.
Hank, I hope there is a GM out there that sees Sanchez that way and Cashman trades him because this team will never win a championship with him behind the plate. Cole knew in the first five minutes of his Yankee career that he wanted no part of Sanchez as a battery mate.
I noticed that also. Kay is typically pretty mild on the broadcast, but even he's had enough of this. It's amazing that two weeks ago this group was in the middle of a thirteen-game winning streak. Now it's like they've forgotten how to play baseball.
[83] Sánchez might be a symptom of what's wrong with this team, but I think it's a bit much to say that they could never win with him behind the plate. I'd suggest that any team in any era would be happy with a catcher who produced a season like he did in 2019, or maybe even this year. The problem is that we compare him to what we saw in 2016 and 2017, and he will likely always fall short of that. Yes, his average is abysmal, but the game has changed. You can argue against those changes, but most teams would be willing to ignore his low average and focus on his above average OPS.
Meanwhile the flogging continues.
There's no way this team is gonna change with Cashman in charge. He's the architect. He's Boone's puppet master. Hal appears to care little and know even less about baseball, so he'll never fire Cash.
They need to burn this thing to the ground.
[85] True, especially at catcher. But I just don’t enjoy ‘three true outcomes’ players.
It’s been impressive overall how Cashman has kept the team competitive for 20+ years while other big teams like. The Sox and Dodgers go up and down. But he needs to admit Boone was a mistake, and the. Shuffle the roster a bit to add depth.
Okay, here's an issue I have. People always talk about the "all important loss column," and I get that. But I've the Red Sox and I have 80 wins, I feel pretty good about that. Yes, the Yankees and Jays have games in hand, the Red Sox are probably thinking, "Show us you can win those games."
Wow, Kay basically calling for change of manager without using Boone’s name..
I’ve never understood ‘all important loss column’, BTW
At least the Dodgers are willing to spend whatever it takes to win.
There is no reason for the Yankees to be under the luxury tax, they are making money hand over fist.
[90] Really? I turned it off.
Bring Back Buck!
All right, I can't watch this anymore tonight. Hopefully things will turn around without me.
[91] I think Cashman's plan was to use all that money in smarter ways. Dump millions on international players, invest in the draft to build a dominant farm system, and then be judicious in the free agent market. I don't mean this as a defense of Cashman, but that plan could've worked brilliantly. Clint Frazier was the product of a really smart deal, and he looked to have all the tools to become a star. Gleyber came over in another shrewd deal, and actually was a star and looked poised to become one of the better young players in baseball. Cole has been a tremendous signing, but Stanton hasn't. Hicks seemed like a smart signing also, but he essentially hasn't played since signing that contract.
I definitely disagree with his refusal to prioritize left-handed hitters, but I don't have too many problems with a lot of the decisions he's made. I just have problems with how those decisions have played out.
David Cone: "A lot of people think I was on the '86 Mets, but I wasn't. I got there the following spring when everyone was going into rehab."
Okay, now I'm really done with this game.
[95] Hahaahah! I imagine rehab is not an unfamiliar experience for Cone as well
[97]Nah. They tried to make him go to rehab, but he said, "No, no, no."
[94] One of the things that bothers me, and it has to be an organizational failure (that's why I blame Cash), is the Yankees inability to play small ball when necessary. No one on the time can bunt. They never hit-and-run. Don't steal much (whether it's out of vogue or not). They rarely ever develop or sign a contact hitter (DJLM is an exception). Moreover, there seems to be a lack of fundamentals being either taught or reinforced.
The result is lots of GIDP, an inability to manufacture runs and sloppy play in the field
[98] (High Five) :)
[99] Ah, but remember how much they were running when things were going well? A correlation, perhaps?
Wow, I was feeling good about the 5 run lead for a few minutes.
[102] No lead is safe with this team.
WTF are these Fox douche bags doing? They are totally ignoring the game.
Well it ain't all bad. This team is just 2-3 good hitters and 2-3 good starting pitchers and 2-3 good relievers and a good catcher and good manager and good GM away from competing next year. I'm excited!
I was 90% confident that the game was going to extra innings. Glad I was wrong.
Judge is pretty good
Torres..what’s happened to him?
Torres has been hitting the ball pretty well this weekend. Hopefully he can turn it around.
⬆️Hope so, his D still really poor though..
Did the announcer just say ‘we sure to see Andrew Heany today.’ ??
While we are asking what happened to Torres, what's happened to Urshela? He's been average in the field at best and non-existent at the plate.
Scherzer is now 6-0 with a 0.88 ERA as a Dodger. It's ridiculous how many superstars they have. Multiple MVP type hitters, and three Coles in that rotation and that's not counting Kershaw. Ain't nobody beating them this year or next year for that matter.
[112] He's amazing. Meanwhile, Boone brings in Heany with the bases loaded..Sigh..
[112] The Braves had 3 hall of famers in their rotation and still only managed one championship. I do like the Dodgers to repeat, though.
[109] As you say! :) 2-tun tater for Gleyber
[115] I will take credit for that. Now Gio hasn't hit anything since he returned from IL.
Stanton line drives are something
Is the Mets manager as bad as Boone? How do you pitch to Stanton there?
Lots of extra curricular activity!
Perhaps it was ill-advised to upset Lindor?
Just not enough home runs today. :/
Lindor looked like Reggie!
I've been listening to the Twins game on the radio this afternoon. Dammit, if we can't beat the Twins how are we ever going to win in Baltimore? (I'm only half-kidding).
It's 5-1 Twins as I type this. I must be delusional because I keep thinking, "it's the Twins, we're going to win."
Gallo!
Judge!
[123] "it's the Twins, we're going to win."
Picked a good time to get home. Atta boy, Judge!
[126] Judge has been great lately.
FUCKING BOLLOCKS!
Much better.
Sanchez!
Good win, but of course, because it's the Twins.
Lots of homers today. Too bad they can't play the Twins and Orioles in the playoffs.
What's the under/over on who many they'll win before they lose again.
4/5
[131] I really like when they play the Twins in the playoffs.
Great stories from Kenny Singleton today about playing for Roberto Clemente in winter ball in Puerto Rico. More interesting than watching the Orioles, great Mullins catch notwithstanding..
Actually turning out to be a good game. Nestor fun to watch and some great D by both sides tonight
Gleyber has zero awareness defensively.
Green gave up a homer? No way.
At this point any blame Green, he’s cooked. Why do they keep putting him out there in big situations?
Not sure how Torres could botch that play, not sure how Green could give up yet another big homer, not sure how the Yanks can score only two runs against this team. Not sure how they can’t crush the Orioles. Yikes.
Psssttt, Gleyber. Don't ground into a double play.
Gritner!
Bloop de boop Be Bop!
Great AB Gardner!
Did Gleyber think there were 2 outs? ; )
I think he must’ve. It’s hard to justify taking off like he did otherwise on a play that close. I think he took off, realized Wade was holding, then had to stop.
Anyone remember a cleaner ninth for Chapman? Eight pitches? It’s been months.
So Torres lost count of the outs twice last night? I guess he and Sanchez must have roomed together in Instructional League.
JFC.
I wonder why he doesn’t think to make a defensive substitution for Sanchez in one run games. Wild pitches but I think catchers who catch from one knee don’t react as fast. Higie would have had both.
They can't keep pulling a rabbit out of the hat. This is over in about 10 minutes.
Fucking puke! Grrrrrr!!!!!!!
Brutal…
After Cashman signed Cole he basically went to the five and dime store to fill out the rest of the staff. This bullpen in particular is a who's who of AAA pitchers.
Starting pitching has been part of the problem but really, who had a good season? Judge, Stanton, Cole and Loiasiga. Anyone else?
Truly one of the most brutal loses in a long time.
