Here we go again with another round of Where & When! I’m just going to jump right in with this one, because it’s fairly easy and I spent hours trying to find something like it, so I want to go to bed now…
Some might look at this right away and know exactly what it is, some might just blink twice and wait for the experts to chime in. But it’s a nice photo regardless, and that’s always a big part of why the game exists, no? So you know the drill by now; tell us where and when this photo was taken (show your math of course), and feel free to kick in any ancillary information about this photo or location; i.e. history, current conditions, future events and/or any interesting trivia associated. Cold root beer for the first person to get the correct answers, and cream sodas for all participants.
I’m going to bed (Sunday night as I write), see you all later!

Here I am, first to comment, a chance at sweet victory in my grasp . . . and I have no freakin' idea what the heck this place is. Or was. Or will be.
Oh, the perils of being an upstater trying to play a city game!
Gotta be a restaurant, right? The cars suggest its the 50's? That's all I have for now.
It's the Guggenheim. Zoomed in on the photo and you can see the street as East 89th Street. And over to the right you can see "Solomon R Guggenhiem" on the construction banner. A quick google hit shows that it was completed in 1959. Unfortunately the Wiki page showed the same photo and the exact date, so I'll leave that to another.
Damn, two minutes late. As soon as I saw it I knew it was the Guggenhiem and didn't even see the construction banner. You can see the interior walkway spiraling. Kudos to TheGreenMan. i thought is was around 1961.
Thought it was the Guggenheim, but I had to step out with me parents for some turkey day shopping.
Hooray for TheGreenMan! For the record, finding the same picture at a different link is still valid; it would not be fair of me to stop you from using that picture as a reference at all. I just tell everyone not to use the link I reference...
[1] I do know how you feel. I have every intention of displaying areas around the whole state, as I have been known to post more exotic locals outside of the five boros. There will be a rather interesting photo up tomorrow that I've wanted to use for some time and tomorrow might be the best opportunity for reasons that will be apparent after you guess where it is >;)
[5] I am eagerly awaiting it! Though honestly, what I really need to do is spend some more time in the city. ;)
Ooh, late to the party.
Too bad, because this one is about as close to me as they're ever going to get -- I grew up on East 90th St (though well east of Fifth), and I was born at almost the moment of the photo. Hm, no, I wasn't. Well, I was born shortly after the building was completed.
Adding ancillary info: George Costanza claims to have designed the "new addition" (possibly the Sackler annex) to the Guggenheim in one of the episodes in which he is pretending to be an architect.
Further info: when RIYank was a child he called it the "round-and-round museum".
[7] Haaa! You get a black-n-white cookie for that >;)
