News of the Day – 5/26/09

Today’s news is powered by birthday boy Lenny Kravitz, who turns 45 today:

Yankees reliever Brian Bruney again experienced discomfort in his right elbow on Monday and will be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Bruney, who was activated on May 19 after being on the DL since April 25 because of a strained flexor muscle in the elbow, played catch on Monday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, one day after a 35- to 45-pitch session in New York during which the right-hander experienced elbow pain.

“I’m pretty disappointed,” Bruney said. “Nobody likes to go on the DL. It is what it is. I’ve got to find out what the problem is and at least get it diagnosed. I think there is something that we’re missing. Maybe some different tests will show what I’ve got going on.”

  • The manager isn’t quite pleased with the lack of communication from Bruney:

“I just think he wasn’t totally forthright in how he was feeling,” Girardi said. “We’ve had many talks with him over the last couple of weeks about how you have to tell us exactly what’s going on. It could be that by rushing himself back, he’s never given himself the amount of time he’s needed.”

Bruney felt some discomfort in spring training. Then he started the season brilliantly, retiring 22 consecutive hitters in one stretch. On April 21, he felt uncomfortable in a game against Oakland and told Girardi – with whom he has a very good relationship – that he needed a day off.

That day turned into almost a month. Bruney went on the disabled list and continued to feel something in his elbow when he played catch. Gradually, he said, the feeling went away, and he worked a rehab game, then pitched May 19 against the Orioles. Now he is hurting again.

Bruney said he had no regrets about coming back last week. He felt fine in the bullpen and fine in the game, he said, and his first round of tests showed no damage.

New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada could play in an extended spring training game this week.

Posada, sidelined since straining his right hamstring while sliding during a May 4 game against Boston, took batting practice, threw and participated in a running program on Monday.

“Maybe Wednesday or Thursday,” Posada said after working out at the Yankees’ minor league complex. “It’s now a matter of getting into baseball shape.”

  • PeteAbe took in a game right behind the “moat seats”, but he got “carded”:

A friend gave me his company’s tickets for the Orioles game. Section 126 is right behind the notorious Legends seats adjacent to third base and it’s a great view. The $225 seats also feature waiter service and our man Moses was very attentive.

But it’s easier to get on an airplane than to get to your seat at Yankee Stadium. I met my friend at Gate 4 and we walked to our seats. The usher at the top of the aisle checked our tickets. OK, fine. Then we got to the seats and a second usher checked the tickets again. Um, OK. Then nine minutes later, a third usher showed up and demanded to see our tickets again.

At this point I had enough. I told her they had been checked twice already. But this woman said, “I have to know if you are supposed to be here.” After we gave the tickets up, she seemed almost disappointed that we were legit.

The same thing happened to the two women who sat in our aisle. What are the Yankees thinking, treating customers like that?

  • Travis Lee (cup of Joe [Torre?] with the club in ’04) turns 34 today.
  • On this date in 2006, Derek Jeter got his 2,000th career hit in the contest, becoming the eighth player in Yankees history to reach the milestone.

The manager isn’t quite pleased with the lack of communication from Bruney:

Am I the only one who found that amusing?

Checking tickets three times? They fucking suck. Can't wait to see how they'll deal with my photoshop tickets. The best part is I can change them so the barcode gives me admittance through the Gate but then the numbers will let me sit in those seats they're trying to keep me out of.

You suck!

I sat in the same seats as Pete and was only asked to show my tickets when entering. The usher at the section was very pleasant and seemed to remember many of the people in the section. I returned from one trip to the bathroom and was waived through while reaching for my ticket.

I can't wait for Posada to come back. Molina, not so much.

Here's a question. Will Jeter tie and pass Gehrig this year or next?

big deal. pete abe had to show his FREE corporate ticket three whole times!! poor baby.

all this stadium bashing is getting old....i'd think the main reason they keep checking tickets is that people must keep trying to sneak into the premier sections. it can't be to annoy the rich and privileged, who are probably much more annoyed by having to kick people out of their expensive seats.

GOD FORBID SOMEONE SNEAKS INTO ONE OF THE HUNDEDS OF EMPTY SEATS! WE DON'T WANT TO ALIENATE THE RICH AND PRIVILEGED!

Personally, I think the IRS should get a suite and get to know some of the rich and privileged better.

[3] Were you wearing a suit? Or business attire?

9 thelarmis   ~  May 26, 2009 2:00 pm

[5] at this rate, if he stays healthy, he'll reach and *just* pass gehrig this year. he'll need 187, in total, to pass. 135 more to go. i think he'll do it this year. but it'll be 2011 when he gets to 3,000...

@ 8

I love the implied criticism of PeteAbe's appearance. Really, I do. Pete doesn't exactly scream that he "belongs". Still, that's exactly part of the problem. Do we really want glorified ushers making SES guesses?

Fuck them.

Are you allowe to wear a suit to a ballgame? I guess I've been hanging out at Fenway too long.

Given the "moat", I think THIS would be appropriate attire for the Legends seats.

[12] LOL

I'm suddenly reminded of Monty Python and the Holy Grail!

And the Legend Seats are Castle Anthrax!

When is "Oral Sex Day" at The Stadium?

heh heh

: )

[13]

June 9th (6/9) ... obviously!

Regards,
Diane ... who was actually born on June 9th.

[14] Well that certainly explains a lot!

I hope we're not sitting near Pete Abe on June 9th!
