News of the Day – 8/12/09

Today’s news is powered by some live Pretenders:

For some time now, Yankees manager Joe Girardi has alluded to the fact that Joba Chamberlain’s schedule for the rest of the season is “mapped out,” without revealing the details of that map.

Girardi did not do so Tuesday, either. But he did offer a crumb.

Asked if Chamberlain will take his regular turn in the rotation Sunday in Seattle, Girardi would not answer. Asked if Chad Gaudin would start Sunday instead, he rolled his head from one side to the other before finally nodding. He had not yet told Chamberlain of his plans, and had no intention to do so until after his start Tuesday night against the Jays.

But, barring a change, Gaudin seems likely to start in Chamberlain’s place Sunday.

Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said the Yankees had no immediate plans to renegotiate the contract of Derek Jeter, which expires after the 2010 season. He said they would likely handle future negotiations with Jeter the same way they handled them with Jorge Posada and Alex Rodriguez.

New York Yankees pitcher Ian Kennedy has thrown off a mound for the first time since undergoing surgery May 12 to remove an aneurysm from beneath his right biceps.

Kennedy threw 25 pitches during a bullpen session Tuesday. The right-hander says everything was fine and he would work off a mound again Friday.

Gaudin hasn't pitched since August 5th. Unless he pitches in relief before Sunday, he will have had a very long layoff coming off a very poor outing.

I hate having both Gaudin and Mitre on the roster instead of Melancon. One or the other, not both.

Oh, good. Now there's a "Joba Map." Something tells me, if we try to use it to find China, we'll end up in Cuba.

But navigation issues aside, I'm not worried about Joba.

[2] Girardi still has a little to much Belichick in him for my tastes, concealing information and all that. I'm not sure it gives the other team an advantage to know, in advance, whether they'll face Joba or not.

I would bet, however, that there's been a Joba-map all along, and its only now that Girardi is even mentioning it.

I'd also bet the kid would blab the whole map if asked, and that's why Girardi isn't telling him stuff in advance - which gets us back to the Belichick stuff.

[3] By the same token, there is really no need for anyone but Girardi and Cashman to know what the plan is, particularly because it still might be fluid. If this was a reasonable town that didn't turn every non-story into the Apocalypse, then maybe he could be more open about the details of the plan. Besides, if Girardi is going to emulate someone, Belichick wouldn't be the worst guy...assuming of course he wins as much.

[3] yeah, I'm sure there's been a Joba map all along, but how detailed has it been, and in March, did it include adventurous August and September detours through the Mitre Dessert and Gaudin Forest?

but I agree, no question, Joba would give up the map if asked, and b) Girardi keeps a copy of the Belichick Bible of Disinformation in the top drawer of his nightstand.

Let me be the first to thank you for the Pretenders clip, Diane. It is amazing. Chrissie Hynde is, hands down, the sexiest, coolest bad-ass rock-n-roller, and this clip shows it.

Come on AJ, let's finish this homestand right.

Is it talking about politics to say I'm sick to death about hearing about angry town hall meetings? I will not say what side I come down on any issue, I just want to tell you guys I can't take any more angry town hall meeting talk.

Remember how good Burnett was last time? I wonder if this will be his let down game.

Remember Francisco Cervelli?

I want to know how the hell the Yankee some how wound up with both Gaudin and Mitre in the rotation. That was so far into worst case scenario I never even considered it.

[4] Agreed= wholeheartedly, but then again how would you feel if he woke up next month and wrote a note for Cashman saying he was resigning as M of the NYY? >;)

[4] The way Girardi lies and tries to trick everyone on almost every move he makes, I think Girardi could manage a team in the arctic and still play these bizarre mind games.

Remember when he claimed that A-Rod wasn't coming off the DL right up until when he filled out the lineup card?

[10] Mishandling Wang's injury and recovery from last season to this one had a big hand in it, I imagine...

14 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 12, 2009 11:47 am

[13] I still blame the Yankees uncanny ability to find and acquire bad pitchers that I didn't even think were still in baseball.

15 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 12, 2009 11:59 am

[14] For what it's worth, that is one thing the Red Sox outdid us on this season you should be proud of >;)

16 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 12, 2009 12:04 pm

Oh, Mitre and Tomko were quite the effort on our part.

17 Chyll Will   ~  Aug 12, 2009 12:13 pm

[16] And for that we get egg roll. You think Smoltz in an eighth inning role would be okay, or is he cooked?

18 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 12, 2009 12:16 pm

I have no idea. Are his numbers better the first time through the order?

19 Shaun P.   ~  Aug 12, 2009 12:29 pm

[18] They're a bit better, but check out the righty/lefty splits - lefties are killing him!

Ergo, Smoltz may be best off as a ROOGY.

[16] In fairness, Aceves was a heck of a good pickup out of nowhere. But I think Penny and Smoltz have done far more damage to the Sox than Mitre and Tomko have done to the Yanks.

A shout out to Bronx native Randy Ruiz who has hit 2HR's this series.

Not only was Ruiz thrilled to be with Toronto, but the fact that he was being called up to join the team at Yankee Stadium was an added bonus. Ruiz grew up in the Bronx and stopped by his grandmother's house on Brook Avenue -- just a short drive from the ballpark -- to spend time with his family before taking the big league stage.

"Not five minutes way," Ruiz said with a smile. "Right by the Willis Avenue Bridge."
