News Update – 12/7/09

Today’s update is powered by a short film about the changing labor market:

The defending World Series champions say they are going to be quiet this winter, but their biggest needs are a left fielder and starting pitcher, and they have the resources to sign Holliday and Lackey if they really want. Lackey seems a more likely signing with the Yankees bringing back left fielder Johnny Damon on a two-year, $20-million contract.

No Update this Thursday, so I’ll see you again next Monday.

JD at 2 years, 20M? Did I miss something or are you speculating?

Looking at Tino's baseball ref page, just realized
Tino's best season = Tex's 2009

'97 Tino
158 games/ 176 hits/ 144 RBI/ 44HR
.296/.371/.577 OPS .948 OPS+ 143

'09 Tex
156 games/ 178 hits/ 122 RBI/ 39 HR
.292/.383/.565 OPS .948 OPS+ 149

both were All-Stars/Silver Slugger, and 2nd MVP
they were both 29 years old, same height and almost weight, too

[1] jd at 2/$20M is john perotto's speculation

This is stressful. Just reading the words "Pettitte" "turns down" "offer" "Yankees" stresses me the fuck out.

Just give the man what he wants. If he wants fifty million dollars for next year, just give it to him. I can't bear to lose him again for nonsense reasons.

[7] I can't believe we'll lose him. We need him more than anyone else, and he prefers the Yanks. At the end of the day we'll pay him more than anyone else (for a single year).

I still think it'll get done at $10mm + easily achievable incentives that get him to, say, $12.5mm.

I also think JD at 2 x $10mm is reasonable for JD after what Abreu got for 2, and Figgins (4 years younger than JD...) got for 4. Someone may be dumb and guarantee JD 3 years, but I can't imagine any insanity that will get him 4 years.

I STILL want to overpay both JD and Mats for 1 year apiece.

[8] I'm inclined to agree with you, but then, I'll go to my grave feeling snake-bit from the time he got away, so until the ink is dry, this sort of thing makes me feel apprehensive.

Not to worry... Andy is a Yankee. There just has to be some contract dancing. Business ya know.

[2] Interesting... but Tino only had 2 other years with an OPS+ above 120. I expect Teix to always be around 140.

P.S. I also thought about Pedro. Maybe in the BP.... long relief guy. It would be great for the young guys. Pedro is a VERY smart pitcher.
