"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Prove It All Night

Tonight the Yankees look to go five-for-five in series in the young season and extend their current five-game winning streak to six. If that should happen thanks to another solid start from Phil Hughes, the latter would be as encouraging as the former. Hughes looked sharp early in his regular season debut against the Angels last Thursday. Though he ultimately walked five and ran up his pitch count in turn, limiting himself to five innings, he also held the Halos to two runs on three hits while striking out six. For all of my grousing about Joba Chamberlain being wasted in the bullpen, Hughes is every bit as important to the future of the Yankee rotation (and thus the Yankees’ future) and his time is now. His strong debut was more than just the cherry on top of the Yankees’ hot start.

Opposing Hughes will be Ben Sheets, who despite being a veteran All-Star, has something to prove himself coming off a season lost to elbow surgery and ill-timed free agency. After three starts, Sheets has a 2.65 ERA, but has walked two more than he’s struck out and hasn’t pitched past the sixth inning, leaving room for the A’s bullpen to blow his first two games. It’s a compelling matchup of talented hard-throwing right-handers at very different stages of their careers.

Randy Winn will start in right field tonight as Nick Swisher gets a curiously-timed day off after returning to his old haunt and breaking an extended 0-fer. Maybe he was proving it all night, too.

My predicted line for Phil tonight: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K, win!

[0] I really Want to like Bruce Springsteen but..just doesn't do it for me. The "rock" stuff seems so stiff and bombastic..do like his acoustic albums though.

4 RIYank   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:02 pm

[3] I think maybe you had to be introduced to him at the right age. I don't listen to him anymore, but when I was 17 it was one of those things where I felt like he was speaking to me. Or for me, or something.

5 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:11 pm

Anybody watching Halladay vs the Braves? He just lucky in the seventh when a hard struck ball with the bases loaded ended up in a 4-6-3 double play. But other than that, he's been awesome once again.

6 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:12 pm

[4] Maybe that's true..but I always preferred more soul & R&B in my rock..hence Van Morrison, early-70s Stones, etc..

7 RIYank   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:20 pm

[6] But that stuff seemed so old when I was 17... :)

[7] Hah! Man, Nirvana just hit big when I was 17 in 1991..I dug them but not excessively..and listening to any of that grunge nonsense now is painful..I heard Paperback Writer on the radio the other day, 40+ years old and still sounds so fresh compared to a lot of new music! (Damn, just call me Abe Simpson now, feeling very very old...)

9 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:29 pm

Man, am I ever happy that Halladay is in the National League.

10 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:29 pm

oh Cliff, great video. I have the bootleg of that show, its a personal favorite.

so anyone see the Cubs put Zambrano in the pen, thats...interesting.

11 RIYank   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:33 pm

[8] Very true, about Paperback Writer. A friend just gave me a bunch of the remastered Beatles disks (he just burned a few) and I played them during my commute, for about a week and marveled at how 'new' many of the songs sounded. Although he didn't give me "Hey, Jude".

Wow, the Sox gave Beckett 7 runs worth of support, but he just couldn't hold the lead.

12 Just Fair   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:34 pm

[8] You've got me by a couple of years, but I love Nirvana. I'm not into Bruce too much either. My wife and I are into U2 and she's in love with Bono. One thing that really pisses her off is when I compare Bono to Bruce for fun. She can't stand him.

13 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:41 pm

[8] That's interesting, Mr OK. As a teenager in the early 90's I had myself steeped in classic rock so much that I was nave to the current bands. Of course, the biggest bands made it through to me via FM, etc, but for the most part, I was a nostalgic. Led Zeppelin, The Who, Rush, The Beatles, The Stones... those were my mainstays. I disliked Nirvana back then, but I like them now. Strange.

Oh, and The Beatles are just in a class all by themselves. Such a path they carved over only 10 years! The stars aligned, I suppose. I have a theory that The Beatles successfully touched every groove in existence on Abbey Road. Such a great great record!

Anyway... back to baseball!

14 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:43 pm

Its kind of funny to see Hughes in the pregame show sadly resigned to the fact that he's probably in for the same organizational circus Joba got last year.

"Well, what can you do."

15 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:44 pm

[11] Man, check out Wilson Pickett and Tom Jones dueting on "Hey Jude", on YouTube. Awesome!

[12] Used to be a huge U2 fan but these days it's all jazz and Congolese Rumba..

16 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:46 pm

[13] Yeah, I remember trying to get some "alternative" fans I knew into Jimi Hendrix, they were horrified..tried to tell me Smashing Pumpkins were better song-writers and as a live-act..Oh, the idiocy of youth and pretension..

17 RIYank   ~  Apr 21, 2010 9:50 pm

[15] Hey, I've heard that before (not sure where -- I think my son was playing it) but didn't know it was Wilson Pickett and Tom Jones. My God, is Tom Jones the whitest-looking human being in the history of the earth? And yet his sound is so 70's black.

18 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 21, 2010 10:04 pm

[17] Man, that's hysterical! I had that clip playing and my lady in the background asked "Who are those two black guys singing Hey Jude, it's really groovy"!!

Lots of great clips from Tom Jones' variety show in the 70s, including an insane one with Sammy Davis Jr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RUNx06sk50

I mean, even for that era Sammy's outfit is astonishing..

Daniel Bard was sitting at 97mph for two innings, once or twice hitting 99.
But Neftali Perez just hit 102. Yoiks.

Anytime I see Ben Sheets, I think of his news conference with the A's. Say what you want about the Yankees, but when they have a presser, they have everyone dressed to the nines. It just looks professional.

Ben Sheets showed up to his press conference in what appeared to be a track suit.

Well ... no. I never really dug Nirvana, but they're fantastic. So is early Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, and Mother Love Bone and Alice in Chains.

Just like most genres, the quality of grunge holds up just fine ...

58 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 21, 2010 10:23 pm

If Hughes is going to throw this hard, this early in the game, and can maintain most of it for 100 pitches, he is going to be dominant.

59 RIYank   ~  Apr 21, 2010 10:23 pm

Papelbon has retired five Rangers on a total of ten pitches.

60 RIYank   ~  Apr 21, 2010 10:24 pm

[58] He can't maintain it for 100 pitches. But in a few weeks, maybe he will.

70 51cq24   ~  Apr 21, 2010 10:29 pm

how do you half swing at a fastball above your head on a hit and run?

71 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 21, 2010 10:29 pm

What is going on with sending the runners? Posada doesn't swing if the Cano isn't running. There is no need to "make things happen".

72 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 21, 2010 10:29 pm

[51] Mattpat, early 80s were amazing! Reagan brought optimism back to the country, Huey Lewis & The News were about to rule the charts, men emrbaced hari gel AND harispray, the bullpen car was still in use (and still in use over here in J-pan)...you missed a lot!

74 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 21, 2010 10:30 pm

I'm now worried that we won't put on any kind of play for a month and a half. Hello pinch stand there.

75 51cq24   ~  Apr 21, 2010 10:30 pm

[71] i agree that he doesn't swing without the hit and run, but he still shouldn't have even thought about swinging at that pitch.

that's a nice play

77 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 21, 2010 10:32 pm

102 tommyl   ~  Apr 21, 2010 10:42 pm

[100] Well, he did walk one guy, and one guy put it in play after shattering his bat. The rest have been Ks. Nasty curves and tremendous movement on the fastball. He's thrown a couple of cutters, haven't seen the change yet.

143 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:12 pm

[142] Always been here, but I really think the difference is the cutter. He came up with a curve as his main secondary pitch, but that can be unreliable. A cutter and a curve with the possibility of a change would give him a tremendous arsenal.

144 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:13 pm

well done, Slappy!

145 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:15 pm

goddamn that was a good play. moved the runner over. s'good

146 tommyl   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:16 pm

[143] Also helps that he's healthy as compared to 2008.

147 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:17 pm

Johnson is very unlucky.

148 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:17 pm

Wtf is Gardner doing on second base?

149 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:17 pm

that's just retarded. Why didn't Gardy tag up?

150 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:18 pm

I guess everyone is running tonight except Gardner.

151 tommyl   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:18 pm

Is there some reason Sheets is wearing what seems like a hula hoop around his neck?

152 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:19 pm

sheets looks like the dude who played stifler in american pie.

That was a *cutter*?! that broke like 3 feet.

170 51cq24   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:37 pm

[164] he looks great, but the ump does have a very wide strike zone.

171 tommyl   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:38 pm

[164] I think the 8 Ks should be indicative. The hardest play anyone has had to make was Teix in the first, and that was because he had to dive away from a broken bat piece.

172 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:38 pm

He's 1-2 on everyone.

173 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 21, 2010 11:38 pm

[248] hard bouncer hit hughes hard and bounced back and he lost sight of it. he seems to be ok

[248] Hard grounder right at Phil. Hit off the heel of his glove, totally playable, but he couldn't find the ball. Runner safe.

251 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:07 am

[248] hit Hughes in the heel of the glove and deflected 10 feet toward home plate. Houghes lost the ball and couldn't get it in time for a throw over to 1B.

257 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:10 am

258 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:10 am

[256] They sting a lot less when the Yankees are playing a good game period. They usually show up when we face Curt Schilling and decide the best course of action would be to take the first two pitches of every at bat.

314 seamus   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:43 am

how long until rodney takes over the closer job for LAA? Fuentes just blew the save coming off the dl.

315 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:45 am

[311] yeah, that kid is all baseball, all the time. He was seeking clarification about #42. Guess he was concerned cause of all the 42s on Jackie day last week. So I laid it out for him about Mo and him being the last player EVAH to wear it.

One down, 2 to go! C'mon MO!

316 Just Fair   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:46 am

[313] Phil and CC know how to lay it down.

317 thelarmis   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:48 am

[312] hey! today, i got an email from my penn state percussion professor and a wedding invite for one of my old college roommates (also a drummer). i may head to state college a day or two before the wedding and catch a Spikes game!

318 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:48 am

[313] Phill looked great. a lot of 1-2-3 innings. No-no through 7, then Chavez hit a bounder off the heel of Phil's glove that he then lost and allowed Chavez to reach 1B. Then he walked Gross and Girardi pulled him at 100-ish pitches. But it was a great game by Phil! 2 BB, 10 Ks.

319 tommyl   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:49 am

Oh no no no no. Not a good time for Bad Mo.

320 Just Fair   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:49 am

325 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:50 am

It feels like the Yankees have been running away from karma all game.

326 seamus   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:50 am

[317] sweet. that is something i gotta do sometime.

327 thelarmis   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:52 am

DP please. over 20 pitches now...

328 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:52 am

Mo's stuff isn't sharp...makes you wonder if this is a residual from being wasted last night.

329 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:52 am

Visions of 2001 danced through my head.

330 Just Fair   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:53 am

Shuddering........1 more

331 tommyl   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:53 am

Is there anyone here who doesn't have flashbacks to Arizona every time Mo has to make that throw?

332 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:54 am

[331] I remember my wife out and out CRYING. I was shattered, but she was WRECKED. I didn't even know she cared so much!

333 thelarmis   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:54 am

gamecast is really slow. i can gather what happened from the posts, but i'll feel better when this thing is over...

334 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:54 am

Mo trumps karma.

335 tommyl   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:54 am

So far, I'm liking the 2010 Yankees.

336 Just Fair   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:54 am

339 thelarmis   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:55 am

[332] you're a very lucky guy, man! yeah, i still have nightmares about that. it pretty much ruined me...

340 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:55 am

[332] Please stop it..watching Curt Schilling rasie that trophy made me physically ill..

341 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:55 am

I threw up in my mouth a lil when he tagged that fly ball.

6 game win streak! All 6 wins for the starters!

342 thelarmis   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:55 am

game over. sweet!

i'll miss tomorrow's day game also...

343 thelarmis   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:57 am

[340] my bass player gave me some weird turkish fusion cd. i'm listening now. it's pretty amazing. the bassist and drummer are just SICK! there's this one tune in 9/8 that is completely beyond! i might have to sit down and transcribe it, though it'll take awhile. i'm gonna burn myself a copy and learn it...

344 51cq24   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:57 am

i like the hugheses

345 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 22, 2010 12:58 am

[340] I didn't bring it up, man.

We have a lot of memories wrapped around the Yanks. Por ejemple: Remember when Aaron Boone hit "the shot"? Jen was pregnant with JJ and as I jumped up and down reeling, she was puking in the bathroom. haha She never lets me forget it.

346 monkeypants   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:01 am

Shit...I had to miss nearly the whole game at a work-related dinner. Got home in time to see Mo record the last out, but entirely missed Phil Phranchise's Philthy start.

347 felix holt   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:05 am

My god this Hughes! (obscure allusion alert)

That was beautiful, nearly much more so. Oh well. I'll take the win.

348 thelarmis   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:06 am

[345] my gig ended and i packed up my gear. the joint was jammed and everyone gathered round the tv sets. most were outta towners and the variety brand yankee haters. when boone homered, i flipped my shit and was jumping and screaming. i'm usually really reserved and super quiet away from the drumkit and off the stage, so the workers were freaking out as were all the patrons. i was in heaven! called my girl (long-time ex) and woke her up. she's from the boston area but her life was always easier when the Yanks won, so she was down with it and happy for me. i was soooo happy, i went outside and handed 5 dollar bills to my coupla bum friends who helped me with my gear! : )

349 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:08 am

[343] Get it online and send it over, sounds great!!

[345] What a great series that was..shame about the Marlins, but..

350 thelarmis   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:09 am

[346] me too. though my work and dinner were unrelated! ; )

351 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:10 am

[348] awesome. Of course, they show that HR all the time on YES, and every time they do, I say ahhh I remember that.. remember Jen? She cracks me up.

352 thelarmis   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:13 am

[349] good lord, i'll be lucky if i know how to just burn a cd of it! i think the cd-r i have is labeled though. i'll see if i can find out the name of the group and check online. that 1 tune is definitely the best. i'm about halfway thru the record now...

353 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:14 am

fucking Rays won't back down, man.

354 thelarmis   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:18 am

[353] i'm pissed that the shit sox won...again. they shoulda lost both to tejas. twinkies are off to a hot start, too...

355 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:24 am

[354] Even more importantly, they may have their needed ace in Liriano.

356 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:27 am

Phil postgame interview on Yes now. Said the Chavez hit got him on the left forearm.

357 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:33 am

well, g'night everyone. raise a glass to the Yanks tonight. We got us a good team. :)

358 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 22, 2010 1:38 am

[357] Yes, a "World Seriously" good team! Hahahahah!!!!

(sorry, it's cold and raining here and I six assigments on my desk at ACME Investigations..not a nice afternoon...)

359 Eddie Lee Whitson KO   ~  Apr 22, 2010 4:35 am

what a great game and enjoyed many of the posts too! I coulldn't help but think of his texas game a couple of years ago, Phil is hopefully back to his starter form and man what a force that is, if true.

will be up at 5:30 Melbourne Australia time to watch CC in his stomping grounds. "sweep the leg, johnny" doesnt have the same punch w/o damon on the roster, but, screw it. let's sweep these clowns.

Sheets was impressive tonite, I remain a big fan of his.
