"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

I'd Write "Sweep The Leg," But I'm Afraid A Yankee Will Sprain His Ankle Trying

So, Friday night I try to explain that the Red Sox don’t suck, and then they go and lose the first two games of this weekend series by a combined score of 24-6 against a Yankees team that is suddenly as fragile as Nick Johnson’s wrists (Alfredo Aceves, come on down . . .). Ingrates.

Not that I’m complaining. The Yankees have won four of five against the Sox and clinched yet another series win. All that remains in this set is for them to complete a sweep on national TV.

The Sox have their best chance at a win in this series tonight, not because the Yankees are throwing A.J. Burnett, but because the Sox have Jon Lester on the hill. Lester has been untouchable in his last three outings, allowing just one run in 20 2/3 innings while striking out 23 and not allowing a single home run.

Fortunately for the Yankees, Robinson Cano is back at second base, and Jorge Posada is taking Johnson’s place at DH, his first start at any position in almost a week. Following those two are Marcus Thames in left, the red-hot Francisco Cervelli, and Brett Gardner back in his customary nine hole thanks to Nick Swisher batting second. It says something about how well the Yankees are playing thus far, and how much every man on the roster is contributing, that this is a lineup I’m happy to see.

If Posada makes it through tonight in one piece, he should catch the opener in Detroit on Monday. That’s good news with regards to Posada’s health, but bad news with regard to lineup optimization as it will bench Cervelli and open the DH spot to a revolving door that means more starts for the rest of the bench.

Alfredo Aceves, who left Saturday’s game with a stiff lower back is day-to-day. Nick Johnson is on the 15-day DL with inflammation in a tendon in his right wrist. He missed most of the 2008 season due to a torn tendon in that wrist, so I wouldn’t expect him back soon, and the Yankees have already said he’ll be gone more than the minimum 15 days.

Kevin Russo takes Johnson’s place on the roster. Russo impressed in camp with a strong plate approach and the ability to hit the pitch he’s given. The 25-year-old second baseman can also play third and has been working at short and in the outfield, but he doesn’t have much power (as evidenced by his .302/.383/.425 line for Triple-A Scranton this year) and isn’t a natural defender. Still, he should provide some good at-bats and flexibility when needed. Russo had a nine game hitting streak going for Scranton when he was called up. His first appearance for the Yankees will be his major league debut.

Russo did get in the game last night. Filled in at 2B, withe Pena moving to SS, and had an AB in the ninth -- flyout to RF, IIRC.

This one's for thelarmis! http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:kifixq95ld6e~T1

You may not dig their sound but there's no denying they were an awesome band making incredibly fresh and powerful music! (I'll defend hip-hop like I do free jazz! :) )

Aw jeez, via LoHud:

"Apparently Dallas Braden’s grandmother actually said, “Stick it, A-Rod,” during a postgame interview in Oakland. You can’t make this stuff up."

[3] LOL. Happy Mother's Day, Dallas' grandma.

5 rbj   ~  May 9, 2010 7:37 pm

Morgan & Miller tonight. Sigh.

Jon Miller: DALLAS BRADEN THREW A PERFECT GAME TODAY

Joe Morgan: The thing is, you have to have good stuff when you are throwing a perfect game. Also, your fielders have to come through. There's no room for errors in a perfect game.

[5] Damn, that's a little creepy.
You don't want to be doing that too often, rbj. Seriously.

[2] i have NO time for that bollocks! you can have your hip-hop, i'll keep my thrash metal! : )

weird karma that braden was perfect. gotta hand it to him, though...

GO YANKS!!!

I just checked out Pete Abraham's "new" place, Extra Bases. (I know, it's been there for ages now, but as a rule I avoid Red Sox blogs.)
I can't believe how hostile the commenters are toward Pete. I wonder if it's just the general irritability that comes with being fans of surprise losers, or if they actually don't like him...

9 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2010 8:02 pm

[7] Would you boys quiet down, please? I'm trying to listen to Mozart.

10 rbj   ~  May 9, 2010 8:06 pm

[6] Heh, I'll stop channeling them. I just hope they take a page from Buck & McCarver and stay quiet for a couple of batters.

[9] you stay outta this, or i'll...i'll...i'll take that magic flute of yours and i'll...i'll...i'll.

ah, fuck it, i'm still eating dinner. you've got about a 1/2 left of quietude, then i'm cranking up the Artillery!

15 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 8:12 pm

[13] He's just saving it for the stretch run.

16 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2010 8:12 pm

He pitched a WHAT???

*Please* tell me this is some kind of cruel joke.

17 williamnyy23   ~  May 9, 2010 8:12 pm

[13] He has been swinging at so many pitches out of the zone that it's very concerning.

18 randym77   ~  May 9, 2010 8:12 pm

[8] Maybe they're holding his Yankees blogger past against him?

19 Diane Firstman   ~  May 9, 2010 8:13 pm

I just got a disturbing thought .... if someone wanted to doctor a pink bat, would they use tampons?

(yes, I'm going to my corner for a time-out now) :-(

20 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 8:13 pm

well, that was uninspiring.

21 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2010 8:15 pm

[17] Not just swinging at bad pitches, but taking really sickly hacks at them, too.

22 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 8:16 pm

David Ortiz doesn't get platooned. He "partners" with Mike Lowell.

23 williamnyy23   ~  May 9, 2010 8:17 pm

[8] With those hostile comments, he would have many comments at all.

24 randym77   ~  May 9, 2010 8:17 pm

Ah, the ol' "Yankees Suck" chant.

25 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 8:18 pm

[24] They do that when the Royals are in town. Sad, really.

26 williamnyy23   ~  May 9, 2010 8:18 pm

[21] His lack of discipline is the real concern because it has been pervasive and abundant all season. He is swinging at so many more balls out of the zone than ever before.

siddown pony boy!

28 williamnyy23   ~  May 9, 2010 8:19 pm

Way to make Lester work.

41 williamnyy23   ~  May 9, 2010 8:26 pm

I'm still in shock about this Braden affair. I watched "Mulholland Dr." this afternoon so part of me feels like maybe the Braden thing was just part of the movie but it's not, is it? It really happened, didn't it.

52 williamnyy23   ~  May 9, 2010 8:32 pm

It's magic! It's not old age suckitude!

I'm just wondering why since Cervelli's hitting really well and they are in need of a DH, and Cervelli's better behind the plate, just keep Posada at DH.

Yep, just wondering.

84 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2010 8:44 pm

Ok, here's my question: how does someone get to the major leagues as an outfielder without being able to catch the baseball?

I mean, I've been a centerfielder in softball and all, I know how hard it can be to track the ball and to resist the urge to charge in before you know what the fuck is going on.

It's hard, I get it. But isn't there like a minimal level of proficiency necessary for one to be placed in such a compromising position?

Hack away, gentlemen, hack away!

85 Diane Firstman   ~  May 9, 2010 8:44 pm

"We've secretly replaced Marcus Thames in LF with Captain Pike from 'Star Trek'. Let's see if anyone notices."

86 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 8:45 pm

i guess they want lester to throw a complete game,,,

87 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2010 8:45 pm

[72] Fair enough, friend. For you, I'll endure these bozos.

88 OldYanksFan   ~  May 9, 2010 8:45 pm

[75] Well.... with NJ out, it may be a good idea. You gain a lot of D and handling behind the plate. On O, you lose the diff. between Cervelli and Thames? Winn? Miranda? Without NJ, it may be a better lineup.

And frankly, the more rest Po gets, the better it bodes for October.

89 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2010 8:46 pm

THAT'S a strike???

90 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 8:47 pm

CF is actually much more difficult than RF or LF in my opinion. Judging whether to come in or back up on a ball hit straight at a CF is really difficult. More than the corner OF positions, anyway.

Short answer to your question: He hits bombs in BP. GMs love the long ball.

91 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 8:47 pm

[87] thanks, man! and ya gotta be careful having both catchers in the lineup at the same time, all the time. injury = lose the dh.

92 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2010 8:48 pm

[90] Then he should be a DH! Or a 1B or whatever. I mean, good Lord.

93 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 8:48 pm

i hate when he says 'ops' like it's a word. OH. PEE. ESS.

95 williamnyy23   ~  May 9, 2010 8:49 pm

Is Hershiser suggesting that the Yankees financial muscle is responsible for having a bench of Thames, Winn and Cervelli?

96 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 8:50 pm

Even Jeter supposedly didn't know how to catch a ball when he was called up.

Use. Two. Hands.

[147] Wouldn't it be cool to own a Marcus Thames outfielder's glove?
I want one!

151 randym77   ~  May 9, 2010 9:08 pm

I swear Big Papi looks a lot smaller than he used to.

152 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 9:08 pm

Is belTRE wearing glasses?

153 rbj   ~  May 9, 2010 9:08 pm

Oh, you have to decide to hit before you can hit?

154 williamnyy23   ~  May 9, 2010 9:09 pm

Why are they nibbling here?

155 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 9:09 pm

[153] Yeah. Just talk yourself into hitting .300.

It's easy.

156 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 9:09 pm

[152] yeah. i was noticing that, too. glasses/goggles

157 Diane Firstman   ~  May 9, 2010 9:09 pm

I think Thames has slept with Madonna, and now thinks to himself, "Justify my glove"

158 RagingTartabull   ~  May 9, 2010 9:10 pm

lets totally be careful with Papi, seeing as how this is 2004

i also hate when he drives in a run with an "automatic double". he ripped the fuck outta that pitch...

[157] You are one kooky broad, Ms. Diane.
Hah ah ah aha ha ha h !!!!

166 williamnyy23   ~  May 9, 2010 9:11 pm

This game could get ugly...AJ seems frustrated and the Yankees have no bullpen tonight.

167 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2010 9:11 pm

A hit here pretty nearly ends the game.

168 rbj   ~  May 9, 2010 9:11 pm

[157] Ouch. Fortunately I don't know any Madonna songs or I'd have a punny response.

Bad AJ tonight?

169 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 9:11 pm

178 cult of basebaal   ~  May 9, 2010 9:13 pm

Awwww, the troglodytic mouth-breathers in Fenway are starting a "Yankees Suck" chant. That's so cute.

179 williamnyy23   ~  May 9, 2010 9:13 pm

AJ has these games...you have to take the bad with the good. He simply stopped competing.

Meanwhile, AJ has been just awful at Fenway since signing with the Yankees. Maybe next time around, the Yankees need to skip him too.

180 Diane Firstman   ~  May 9, 2010 9:13 pm

I think his defense has let him down too, Joe.

181 Alex Belth   ~  May 9, 2010 9:13 pm

Classic shit the bed performance by AJ, dammit all.

182 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 9:14 pm

[178] It's almost like they can't see the standings on that big, green wall out there.

183 randym77   ~  May 9, 2010 9:14 pm

I should switch my TV to SAP, and brush up on my Spanish. Can't be worse.

Gawd, ESPN and Fox make me appreciate Michael Kay.

Can we get a refund on AJ's contract?

185 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 9:15 pm

aj's era has climbed a run...so far.

i guess we'll see sanchez. girardi said he's good for 100 pitches...

186 Alex Belth   ~  May 9, 2010 9:15 pm

Yeah, he needs to give them at least five, six innings tonight.

187 cult of basebaal   ~  May 9, 2010 9:15 pm

188 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 9:15 pm

195 RIYank   ~  May 9, 2010 9:16 pm

Just think, we get these suckers in the Bronx nine times this summer before we have to return to Fenway.

[189] :)

197 The Hawk   ~  May 9, 2010 9:17 pm

[181] I actually was thinking it was a different AJ shit the bed performance. Usually it seems like he gets distracted or thrown off his game; tonight it was almost a flameout built from scratch. The Ortiz AB was representative ... They had him down 0-2 then start ****ing around. It looked to me like Burnett was getting too loosey-goosey as opposed to other meltdowns when he tightens up.

198 The Hawk   ~  May 9, 2010 9:20 pm

[184] Geez, the guy was 4-0 with an ERA under 2 before tonight. A little slack cutting is in order, I think.

You know what? Nick Swisher is just a good baseball player.

203 mjpucci   ~  May 9, 2010 9:20 pm

[197] I agree...Burnett's just leaving pitches over the plate tonight. What I associate with Burnett meltdowns includes 4-walk innings with a couple hit batsmen and at least 3 wild pitches.

204 rbj   ~  May 9, 2010 9:20 pm

207 YankeeAbby   ~  May 9, 2010 9:21 pm

208 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 9:21 pm

[197] Burnett shouted at Frankie Brains when he came out to talk to him. He looked tense. Barking, "I KNOW!" without even meeting Cervelli's eyes.

209 Diane Firstman   ~  May 9, 2010 9:21 pm

I wonder why Ozzie's hitting coach couldn't straighten Swisher out like this ... maybe the COACH sucks?

I watched as much as I could take.

I was hoping that this would be relaxing background, but I have serious work to do.

With all due respect, Hawk, I think this is CLASSIC shit the bed AJ.

It's cold, he's had that swallowed a handful of rust pills look on his face from pitch one - he's generally given off the appearance that he doesn't want to be there.

Refund on his contract, though? Heck no.

This is the same guy who utterly humiliated the opposition out of a 2nd and 3rd, no outs jam. In Satchel Paige style. You all run in and take a seat, I got this.

Showing again that it's AJ who may have the sickest ability on the staff.

But he is infuriating when he doesn't compete and this has been a classic. Damn, AJ.

216 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2010 9:23 pm

247 jjmerlock   ~  May 9, 2010 9:32 pm

You know, McClleland, there's a chance, I'm just saying there's a freaking chance, that if you didn't call strikes like such a complete and utter DIPSHIT, that if it wasn't all about bringing attention to your chicken waddle old man neck flabbo, that maybe, just maybe, people would be less inclined to get pissed off at you over balls and strikes.

You do realize, right Tim, that in a game where the number one rule is "never show anyone up" that you're completely showing up the batter, right?

Do you get that?

Fucking jackass.

248 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 9:32 pm

Jeepers. Let's hope that was a ploy to "put a charge" in the guys.

251 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 9:33 pm

"just" the 2nd perfect game in A's history? um, there are only 19 in the *history* of the game. 4-letter network...

252 randym77   ~  May 9, 2010 9:33 pm

Was Thames ejected?

253 mjpucci   ~  May 9, 2010 9:33 pm

[247] McClelland's always been pretty adept at making himself the center of attention. You may remember his brain freeze in last year's ALCS. Or, even more, the George Brett pine tar game.

254 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 9:33 pm

[252] no, just his manager.

255 williamnyy23   ~  May 9, 2010 9:34 pm

The Sportscenter achor just said it was only the second perfect game in A's history. There have only been 19. The Yankees have three. That leaves 16 for 29 other teams. Only two for the A's?

256 Yankee Fan in Boston   ~  May 9, 2010 9:34 pm

[252] No. Girardi was.

257 YankeeAbby   ~  May 9, 2010 9:34 pm

[258] yeah, that's for Gedro and gedro only...

263 jjmerlock   ~  May 9, 2010 9:36 pm

[230] He just so, so, so good when he's on. I've watched a few games already this season where it's been to the point of me actually thinking, "damn, this isn't even fair." And I'm from the step on their throats school.

His potential to make a game out of reach from pitch one is such a valuable postseason asset. Unfortunately, his terrifying lower percentage possibility to completely shit the bed is a corresponding liability. My bizarre brand of optimism likes having the guys who can just write law from strike one, or maybe it's my masochistic side.

264 rbj   ~  May 9, 2010 9:36 pm

Ya know, if I had to manage an AJ shit the bed game, I'd work to get tossed too.

Back in High School, we had open tryouts for JV and Varsity ball. There was a guy, Knute was his name, he played tackle on the HS Football team and could hit the ball a FUCKING mile, but he wasn't the most coordinated fellow in the world.

Anyways, Knute tried out as an OF for the baseball team and he was in the field during batting practice one day.

There was a long flyball hit down the LF line. Tailing, tailing, tailing, into the trees down the LF line.

Which had about a 6 foot hill that you had to deal with, running along the line a couple of feet into foul territory.

Anyways, Knute went after the ball, forgot to account for the hill and tripped and fell flat on his face.

Our coach, who hitting fielding practice fly balls, turned to me and said, "I've gotta cut that boy, before he hurts somebody!"

Marcus Thames ... I award you the Knute Engstrom award.

May God have Mercy on your glove ...

[290] If it makes you feel any better, I am not going to study. I am completely unmotivated.

294 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 9:50 pm

why's he still on 1st?

[292] A great story. Sadly appropriate.

296 jjmerlock   ~  May 9, 2010 9:50 pm

[284] I am actually in deeeep shit, so....

[287] Do you really want to hear it?

My property teacher was so bad that property is pretty much the only subject I know next to nothing about (it's been shocking to discover how much I actually *do* know in this second year, for the most part), but the RAP may be the one thing I'm reasonably on top of.

297 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  May 9, 2010 9:51 pm

Ok, Swish is going to do this thing.

298 randym77   ~  May 9, 2010 9:51 pm

They shoulda kept Greg Golson.

And hey, the Nats released Mike Vento. And there's Kevin Thompson, who's playing for the independent leagues, last I heard.

Damn it.

Random updates as to what newly horrible shit has happened would be appreciated, and validate my decision to work.

Was that first pitch from Lester a strike? The first one of the game? I've been pissed off since then, but my ESPN3 was coming in at low quality.

[305] Unity in our futility!

307 rbj   ~  May 9, 2010 9:55 pm

[296] Property was my best subject. Partly because my property prof is an Orioles fan, and stated that Yankee fans (this was 1990) wouldn't wear their hats in his class. So next class I did -- basically I got called on for the rest of the semester. Upon graduation, he gave me a 1914 Yankees fitted cap, which had to have been hard for him to buy.

So explain the RAP, and include fertile octogenarians (I'm looking at you, Betty White)

308 randym77   ~  May 9, 2010 9:55 pm

[301] I think Kevin Thompson, like Bronson Sardinha, has been hurt by "off the field issues." It was rumored that's why the Yanks were reluctant to promote him, and he's gotten in trouble with other teams, too.

309 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 9:55 pm

[303] no. i don't think it was a strike and it pissed me off, too.

310 Mattpat11   ~  May 9, 2010 9:56 pm

Morgan is obviously very annoyed about that Fisk HR

Oooooh, FAT SANCHEZ IS *UP*!!!!!

312 randym77   ~  May 9, 2010 9:56 pm

[304] I doubt they'd go for that, but they might be willing to give us Bronson Kiheimahanaomauiakeo Sardinha back.

327 randym77   ~  May 9, 2010 10:01 pm

[315] It wasn't really publicized, but I heard he was sent back to AA (from AAA) because he threw a tantrum when another OFer was promoted to the big leagues instead of him. They felt he had maturity issues.

He's not heavy, he's mi hermano.

330 jjmerlock   ~  May 9, 2010 10:04 pm

[307] You bastard, I seriously need to work. I think it's essentially, "no contract covering property can extend past 21 years after the death of the last relevant person alive (the "validating life") at the time of the signing of the contract." Any piece of a contract or will, etc. that will necessarily do that as it involves unborn heirs or heirs and whatnot, where it will be physically impossible not to violate that stricture is invalid and is treated as struck from the document. Frozen sperm potentially messes the RAP up altogether. I can't remember why it's 21 years, although it seems like a shorter length of time would cover the concept of an heir being conceived during the validating life, but not yet born. Maybe you can "refresh my recollection" on that. I feel like reverters and life estates particularly got whacked by the RAP, iirc.

I hate property, but intend to learn it at some point.

338 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 10:13 pm

[337] yeah, he was fun! : )

339 rbj   ~  May 9, 2010 10:13 pm

[330] Pretty good. I'll give you an A. Life in being + 21 years as a safety, basically you don't want someone to will to X for life, then to X's heirs for life, then to their heirs for life, ad infinitum. So basically you can will X, but then X's heirs get a fee tail simple.

Frozen embryos (don't think sperm itself {himself? it is sperm} counts) could be problematic, would make an interesting case, though I guess that an embryo born 200 years later would be SOL, as the idea is to not entangle what future generations do with property.

Maybe time for ICA.

340 thelarmis   ~  May 9, 2010 10:16 pm

347 jjmerlock   ~  May 9, 2010 10:25 pm

ICA? Int'l Commercial Arbitration?

How generous with an A! If only my real grade looked like that, lol.

My transcript is like: "let's see if someone set out to create the most confounding transcript ever."

I call it my all the colors of the rainbow transcript and insist I'm trying to fill as many categories as possible, including cryptic notations. But every semester so far, I've racked up at least one A, at least one B, and at least one C. At least last semester was two A's (but the same mix).

I've had two massive family crises that sort of explain why the C sneaks in there each time, representing one AJ-like meltdown, but I probably would have pulled it off without any interference.

I think your point is a good one about not wanting to entangle future generations, but then, you might have a heir who came into being while the person who is the validating life is still alive - and you're absolutely right, of course it would have to be an embryo.

The biggest thing they try to cut off, as I understand it, is heirs of heirs - if you ain't born while the validating life is going, you're SOL.

I actually have some CDs on property, because it's a course I was legitimately interested in - our prof (who is a famous young scholar, just an awful prof) was so bad though, that literally not a single person in a hundred person section said that she taught the class competently!

I may even listen to the CDs this summer!

Or hit you up for a crash course!

352 jjmerlock   ~  May 9, 2010 10:39 pm

[348] Ha, ha, thanks!

I can never decide if the A's are good because they show that I clearly have the ability, or if they're bad, because they suggest that I have no excuse for the other grades!

It's not that I'm lazy, in fact, I work my butt of, it's just that I get tired of the whole thing by finals time. I've always been a great academic (passion-wise) and a wildly inconsistent student.

This semester was supposed to be the first time I actually tried to rack up some grades...

"I've always said that he has a swing that is tailor made for Yankee Stadium. That uppercut will give him a lot of HRs to Yankee Stadium's short RF."
