Yu Never Know

Open thread as we await word on Yu Darvish.

Oh, yeah, word has it the Sox have picked up former Yankee Mark Melancon in a trade with the Astros, and also signed the one and only Nick Punto to a two-year deal.

Not too many people convinced that Melancon is a good answer for them; he's got control issues and comes out of a weak division with a small sample-size of above average success. I think this was more of a move to rid themselves of two non-performers for something as opposed to nothing. I'm not even gonna bother saying anything regarding Punto.

If the Yanks do get Darvish, I hope it's for a relatively low number; not for the value, but for what it represents in the potential rotation.

C. Paul to the Clip Joint. L.A.'s other team just got a whole lot more fun.

[2] Oh, excellent. Danny Ainge really wanted him. I mean, bad.

Also: Sox sign Nick Punto. Huh. So they move Lowrie to get Melancon, and then sign Punto, who is pretty clearly worse than Lowrie. They must see something in Melancon that we never saw, huh? I'm not going to like rooting against him, though. (I'll definitely do it, I just won't like it.)

Blogsville puts the Yansk bid in the $35-40m range. Hi bid looks to be around $60m.

$60M???
Don't they ever learn?

Why bid $35-40 million when everybody knows the winning bid will be around $60 million? No way is he going for less than Matsuzaka.

What's the point in just showing up to this party? You don't get anything for 2nd place.

Sigh.

I wonder if Nippon Ham could cheat and cut a side deal with a team by agreeing to a lower bid in advance. That's usually how things work in corporate Japan anyway. Everything is rigged.

[7] Did everyone know the winning bid for Darvish would be higher than for Matsuaaka? I didn't. Everybody in baseball thinks the Red Sox paid way too much for Matsuzaka. Why would it be obvious that some team will be willing to post even more?

Plus, these numbers are just speculation right now, it is all gossip.
