The bottom of the 9th for the DR team left me shaking my head...

I had switched over to the Yankees game by then, but did they send Taveras, or did he just decide to go on his own?

I don't know, I had it in an inset on my screen as I was getting the USA game cranked up.

Woo hoo, Netherlands won! Go Orange!

5 rbj   ~  Mar 7, 2009 3:38 pm

Crud, there better not be anything wrong with Derek.

They said there's nothing wrong with Jeter. The manager just wanted to put someone else in.

LIDR? Or maybe he just wanted to give everyone some at-bats.

[6] Or maybe he just wanted to give everyone some at-bats.

So wait, is this a "high-stakes" game or a little league game?

OK, I'll stop. I will admit, watching the DR-Netherlands game, that the imposition of a more or less fixed pitch count ads an interesting strategic element. Sort of like 100 over cricket v. the much longer test matches.

Defensive replacement.

9 rbj   ~  Mar 7, 2009 4:52 pm

Yeah, but the way the announcers were talking about it fed right into my natural paranoia.

It sucks watching/listening to all these folks on tv enjoying a baseball game so much in early March. : )
/sarcasm.

14 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Mar 7, 2009 5:33 pm

I-Rod already has more hits for Puerto Rico than he did for the Yankees?

I heard Sidney Ponson didn't suck.

That horrifies me.

[2] I think Tavares went on his own. Why, with Hanley @ bat is beyond me.

I find it interesting that Hiram Bocachica is starting over Bernie in this game.

19 randym77   ~  Mar 7, 2009 7:06 pm

Bernie IBB'ed, then a pinch-runner in. Maybe his quads are still not up to running?

No luck at the Tokyo Dome last night, sold out and the standing tkts were long gone hours before the game. We ended up watching on some tvs outside the dome in the plaza. Lots of joy all around as Japan won in a rout..except for four Korean girls next to us who looked they were going to cry..

Go Netherlands! The Oranjeboom will rise again!!

Heh, Espino & Espino battery. Wasn't there a Bugs Bunny cartoon where he pitched to himself?

22 randym77   ~  Mar 7, 2009 7:27 pm

Another homer by Pudge. Maybe we should sign him.

Yes. "We" should.

I know there are skeptics, but the US/Canada and Netherlands/DR contests were both great baseball games played with a lot of passion and emotion. Even the Italy/Venezeula game was pretty good for 6 innings. I can understand the concern about injuries, but I can't understand why a baseball fan wouldn't embrace this event.

Great start for the WBC...I can't wait for tomorrow, and especially for round 2 (with or without DR).
