The Yankees finsihed the first half in style, taking three-of-four from an impressive, and likable Indians team. Though Randy Johnson was far from imposing yesterday, he pitched well enough to guide the Yanks to a 9-4 win. The Yankee offense was led once again by Jason Giambi (who hit a long home run–probably right over Cliff Corcoran’s head in the right field bleachers), and Hideki Matsui. Gary Sheffield added a three-run shot in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away, and Mariano Rivera pitched two scoreless innings–retiring all six men that he faced–to earn the save. The Yanks trail the first place Red Sox by two-and-a-half games, and second place Baltimore by just a half game. After the All-Star festivities this week, the Bombers play four up in Fenway, so we know the second half will start with a bang.
1. This Thompson kid is a little fiery . . . I like it.

2. Nice work on the A-Rod articles you linked to... very thorough, considered analysis! I wasn't aware that his adjusted stats weren't higher than they are, if that statement makes sense.
RJ had a TOUGH day yesterday - the story of the season. I'm wondering if he has a run in him like he did for the Astros a few years ago - monster second half, 10-0 with a 2.xx ERA.
3. that Thompson article was a good read. Thanks for posting.
Anyone see the bit in the Star Ledger about Jason Anderson's locker being cleaned out? ANy word on why/what move is happening?
4. Alex, that homer went to the back of Section 39, which is one section over from mine, but it was easily the deepest ball hit into the right field bleachers during a game I've attended there. The previous standard was a ball Matsui hit directly over my head last year.
Seamus, the Yankees have a number of roster moves to make after the break. Felix Rodriguez is starting a rehab asignment and they're going to need a fourth and fifth starter on Sunday and Monday. The hope now is that Pavano can go against the Sox on Sunday. They'd then likely use a spot starter (perhaps May again, perhaps not) in Texas on Monday with the hope that Brown would be able to take his turn the next time around (Sat 7/23 in Anaheim). If Anderson's on the way out, it could mean that they expect to activate Rodriguez for the Boston series. Now, as to why Torre's been giving Scott Proctor the opportunities that Anderson has rightfully earned with his AAA performance thus far this year, well that's just Joe being Joe.
5. Cliff, that homer bounced off of the hands of the guy 2 seats to my right. (I'm in row N, which is 6 from the wall.) Unfortunately it bounced away from me. The only time I've seen one come that close was during batting practice.
6. I'd take Anderson over Proctor, any day.
Could be just an issue of who has options left - or, it could be that Jason is being traded.
7. "The hope now is that Pavano can go against the Sox on Sunday."
Whose hope? The Yankees or the Red Sox? (Sorry. Couldn't resist.)
8. chucksax, which a-rod articles are you talking about?
9. "A-Rod" was probably a thinko for "Randy".
