You Can Get With This (or You Can Get With That)

Ah, Black Sheep’s break-out classic.  I liked the whole album.  Dres gets props for bringing Knishes into the discussion.

How about if we take the concept to the Yanks. Like say for instance, Yankee Screw-Jobs.

This?

Ex-major leaguer Irabu arrested for assault at restaurant

Or That?

I loved the Perez hermanos locos, but damned if Pascual wasn't 31 flavors of feo...

[1] They are both rocking some seriously cool hair in thos photos..

Irabu was an interesting character. He was known for his surliness here in Japan. I believe the story was that his father was an American service-man who left the country..growing up mixed-race with a single mother would not have been the norm in those days in Japan, and he suffered quite a lot of abuse in school until he got too big/good at baseball, but I heard that as a result he had some serious social issues as a result...clearly still a problem if that last report of him beating up the bartender in Osaka is true!

Pascual was a great nut, but more of a crazy coke head than anything else. Irabu looked like a bad Elvis impersinator immitating Jackie Gleason. I loved how he was the one glaring misfit on great teams that were populated with straight shooters. Pascual, well, I guess he just summed up those ugly, ugly years didn't he?

[3] too lazy to check now but am sure the Yanks were little bro Melido's first team too?

oh man, "No Maas" has two HYSTERICAL pictures up today...

There's a chance that Jonathan Winters was playing an elaborate joke on us Yanks fans when he decided to portray a hyped Japanese pitcher named Hideki Irabu whose dream it was to play in the Bronx.

[5] brilliant..

is Pascual Perez the guy who was late for a game because he missed the exit for Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium? How do you NOT find a stadium??

7 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jan 20, 2009 10:55 pm

yes! "I-285" Pascual. and he threw an Eephus pitch too, i forgot!

8 Raf   ~  Jan 21, 2009 12:02 am

KC was Melido's first team.

9 thelarmis   ~  Jan 21, 2009 12:04 am

[7] ooh, remind me of the I-285 story. it is the one right here in atlanta, from when he played here in the early to mid '80's?

10 thelarmis   ~  Jan 21, 2009 12:06 am

[8] and then the pale hose for 4 years. the last pitching brother, carlos, threw for the expos & dodgers.

11 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jan 21, 2009 12:29 am

[9] hey thelarmis, it is indeed. you must have been to some games there, or did you only arrive when they moved to Turner Field?

listening to some Eddie Henderson, future-space funk with a tight groove..some solo Abdullah Ibrahim for the cool down this afternoon!

12 thelarmis   ~  Jan 21, 2009 12:42 am

[11] hey buddy! do you remember perez's I-285 story? i'd love to hear it! 285, is the highway that circles around the perimeter. it's generally a nightmare to travel and i'm glad i'm right in the city and the jobs i have outside, generally keep me off that road...

i've been here for 12.5 years now (i can't believe it's been that long!)!!! i went to the old fulton county stadium straight away. it was Aug/Sept '96 and i think my first game was the expos. i could've sworn i saw a young orlando cabrera playing a fancy shortstop, but he didn't make his debut til the following year, so that must've been a different game. i went to a bunch of games at the old stadium and lots at The Ted, too. i gotta say, turner field, really is a fabulous place to see a ballgame. i plan on going to the 3rd, and final, interleague game when the Yanks are in town! i wonder if jeb or bama will be coming in. i'm a-gonna go even if i have to go myself w/ a SRO ticket!!!

i should be getting the 2cd live Herbie Hancock Flood CD w/ the Headhunters sometime this week. i've got some Lou Donaldson on at the moment with Kenny Burrell on deck!

[12] only what i read on Wikipedia!

Turner always looks great on tv, too bad about all the Braves fans :)

damn, you are building one great collection..but bet you don't have "Ask The Ages" by Sonny Sharrock..??

14 thelarmis   ~  Jan 21, 2009 1:03 am

there really aren't too many braves fans! and none of them seem to know anything about baseball!!!

nope, don't have that sonny sharrock! it's not on blue note!!! haha, i kid. i AM picking up a coupla titles here and there that aren't on BN (shhhh, don't tell!!!). once i'm done with this kick, i do plan on picking up a bunch of seminal avant-garde cd's from that era, non-blue note edition, but the 1st is gonna be Albert Ayler's Spiritual Unity. that said, i do have a non-BN Ornette cd on the way, but it only cost me a dollar!

yeah man, i've easily doubled my classic BN cd collection in the last few months. i plan on 1 more month of serious buying, then cooling down, if i can. there are a bunch of BN japanese titles i want, but they all seem to be in the LP cardboard sleeves and i'd rather a full jewel case, with spine & libretto...

15 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jan 21, 2009 1:11 am

That Sonny has Elvin Jones on drums and Pharoah Sanders on sax..yep, it's LOUD!

That Ayler is amazing, didn't "get it" first few times, but now I love free jazz.

any requests from here just let me know, I don't need an excuse to go record hunting.

Braves fans...how could they not sell out a playoff game? THE PLAYOFFS???!!! Disgraceful...why is Atlanta such a lame sports town? is it because the Hawks and Falcons were so abd for so long?

16 thelarmis   ~  Jan 21, 2009 1:33 am

WOW, what a lineup on that record! pharoah sanders' Karma, is probably 2nd on my list after the Ayler. that said, i plan on picking up the Trane/Cherry "avant-garde" cd before any of 'em! the Cherry "trilogy" on BN is terrific, esp. the middle title! i recently got a coupla Cecil Taylor BN cd's!

thanks man, i'm sure i'm gonna need to hit you up for some BN overseas help in the coming months. i've got a current plan to collect thru mid-Feb, when the next batch up RVG's is released.

man, i really ONLY follow baseball, so i don't know about the other sports here, but yeah, it seems as though the Ted is never packed. there's generally been winning teams, beautiful weather and it really is a wonderful place to see a ballgame, even though it reeks of modern america stripmall...

ooh, don't forget about the "thrashers"!!! ; )

17 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jan 21, 2009 1:41 am

[16] who are the "thrashers"??

Cecil Taylor..all the love and respect to him for sticking to his muse but..man, some of his shit is REALLY hard to listen too. I saw him love a few years back, his technique is stunning but after 30mins or so...Anthony Braxton and his quintet shared the bill that night and they were awesome!

The stadium "reeks of modern America stripmall"...hahahaahh!! whole damn country is going that way...

18 thelarmis   ~  Jan 21, 2009 1:50 am

the "thrashers", are atlanta's hockey team. i guess the calgary flames started here, then there was a void, then the thrashers showed up not too very long ago. apparently, it's the georgia state bird, or some shit. who knew?! they might even be a decent team, but who the hell follows hockey?! i actually have a decent amount of friends here (all northern transplants, like me and most of atlanta), who are pretty huge hockey freaks. that said, i have 2 students who are season ticket holders. there are some "fake" team sports here too, like arena stuff, or some shit. i don't pay any attention. i've grown accustomed to the bravos and i'm glad they're here in my adopted city. atlanta, really truly is a TERRIFIC city and i absolutely adore living here. just wish i could find me an affordable home with a BIG basement in a killer location...

19 thelarmis   ~  Jan 21, 2009 1:54 am

this just in from pudge-rod:

"I'm in great shape," Rodriguez said. "Whoever gets me, it's going to be a lot like hitting the lotto. I'm back in the shape I was in 2004. I'm at 195-200 (pounds), and I'm ready to go."

20 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jan 21, 2009 1:58 am

[18] Hockey..wow, had no idea there was a team in Atlanta! Why would a team move from hockey-mad Canada to Dixie??

[19] Pudge..shouldn't the Yanks take a chance on him? I really can't see Posada lasting the year..I always liked Pudge, and since he "lost weight" (wink wink) then maybe he'll bounce back with the bat??

21 thelarmis   ~  Jan 21, 2009 2:02 am

oh, who knows about the hockey franchises! for all i know, there's still a team in calgary! hell, it's hockey - who cares?! ; )

well, we sorta already did take a chance on pudge. didn't work out very well and we're already on the books for (name that...) molina for $2mil.

man, this John Jenkins cd w/ Kenny Burrell cd is pretty killin'!!!

22 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Jan 21, 2009 2:05 am

[21] ANYthing with Kenny Burrell is going to swing!

I love Molina but..it's just an automatic out at this stage, isn't he? Why not give Pudge another try?
enjoy the new disks, got to split the office early today!

You would think if that were the case, they'd cherish a winner like the Braves. FWIW, Pittsburgh didn't sell out their playoff games either in the 90's

24 Pete   ~  Jan 21, 2009 9:54 am

Can't for the life of me remember the date, but I went to a game started by Pascual Perez where he had to have thrown maybe 8 pitches and was promptly removed because of an injury. Good times.
