My opinion should count for less than the rest of you music-ophiles, because I'm tone deaf and couldn't play a guitar (or any other instrument) to save my life - but the stratocaster, please. If its good enough for Clapton, Ritchie Blackmore, and Mark Knopfler, its good enough for me.
(BTW william, if you're reading this - have you ever listened to Deep Purple? If so, how can you think that heavy metal isn't music?)
as a kid, i woulda gone w/ the strat, but now i'll take the tele. the brilliant guitarist i play most all of my gigs with for a living, plays a tele and that sold me. he's been using a hollow body (eastman, i think) with our jazz trio lately, but his tele is his signature and i love it!
[4] steve morse has a great gig w/ Purple now! i remember seeing them front row at Giants Stadium. they were sandwiched by GnR & Aerosmith and totally stole the show, as far as i'm concerned. and Blackmore's Rainbow kicked ass! btw, i replied to your Metal post from last week, but i was late and thread had ended. i don't remember which post it was and you probably never saw it... Up The Irons!!!
still, over a strat or a tele, i'll take a 4-piece royal blue sparkle drumkit!!! : )
I'll take the drums. (yet another drummer on this board)
But seriously, Strat all the way
Love Deep Purple. I saw them at that show at Giants Stadium - some lunatics lit a section of seats on fire! I was, unfortunately, way up in the upper decks for that show.
[6] nice! i don't think i recognize your tag - if you're new here: welcome! and it's always nice to add another drummer to the board! : )
i still have a scar on my knee from that show. i was in the first row of seats near the wall. when Axl said they were recording part of the video for Paradise City right then, my best friend and i hopped the wall onto the field. i was pretty small and some asshole stuck his foot out and tripped my on purpose when he saw us running. i got cut open and still have the scar. battle wound! and, no, i didn't end up in the video...
[5][6] I saw Deep Purple in second row at the finger lakes arena in upstate in '98, so sadly I did not get to see Blackmore play with them. But they still kicked ass. That was an awesome show: Dream Theater opened and ELP played after them - the last time Emerson, Lake, and Palmer toured together.
thealarmis, I'll have to go back and find that post . . .
Also 'new' here but a long time reader. I've played in and out of bands going back to the early 70's. My first guitar was a Fender Jazmaster. Nice-BUT not as nice as my 2nd. A Gibson SG Special(wish I had that one back). Several Gibson SGs since as well as a Strat(HSS Deluxe/USA)purchased a few years back. Nice, but I'll stick with Gibsons. As for the 2 above-I'd go with the Strat.
After futzing around with various guitars for years, I finally found my voice as a player on my trusted tele about two years ago. I have made some little tweaks and mods and have played some great gigs and records with it. While I have other guitars, they are all sloppy seconds to my beloved telecaster.
Which one has a maple neck?
Many years ago, my brother picked up an original 'Ventures' off-white Mosrite in mint condition. Not a great guitar, but I imagine it might be worth something now.
R&R Guitar HOF'ers? So many worthy..One of my picks would have to be Jan Ackerman (played with a group called Focus/Just incredible)-Leslie West, Hendrix, Clapton, Blackmore would be a gr8 5 to start.
No guitarist Hall of Fame would be complete without the late Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I had an ex-BF who adored Tony Iommi.
Pete Townshend anyone?
The Edge?
Alex Lifeson?
Eric Johnson?
"He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats"
Peter Green the greatest to step from these islands (Eric who?)
I'd go with the Tele over a Strat, only as long as they were early models otherwise I'll just stick with the ones I've made or put together for myself.
If I were to go back to electric, I'd take the Strat (I had a cheap one, long ago). My real preference, though, is to leave them both and grab a Martin D18. I'd rather listen to Norman Blake or Tony Rice than any rock or jazz player you could name.
Telecaster.
I'm still kicking myself for not buying the semi-hollow body I saw for $300 at a local garage sale over the summer. Damnit.
I play an SG, though I've been ogling the American Strat for awhile though. Its the usual single coil vs. humbucker debate for me.
I'll go with you, Cliff. I always prefered the Telecaster back when I used to play the guitar and know about these things.

No contest the Telecaster wins in my mind, unless it's up against Jimi's Strat:

guitar-wise, i'll take the Paul Gilbert Ibanez White guitar with f-holes!!! i'd try and link it, but i think there's a weird filter here now...
anyway, enough talk about axes, i've gotta go teach more drum lessons now!!!
Tele, but fortunately a choice I don't have to make.

BTW- Just listening to Deep Purple IN ROCK(1971). Ian Gillian's vocals 2nd to none.
[7] I'm not new here - I just don't comment much. I'm sure I will once the season starts and we really have stuff to banter about.

[8] so thelarmis, let's hear it then: who's in your guitar HOF?? would like to hear all the other musicians picks too..
so many to choose from: for rock guitar it all starts and ends with Hendrix of course.
jazz: Django, Wes, Grant Green, John McLaughlin..Paco De Lucia for anything he plays..
Which one has a maple neck?
Many years ago, my brother picked up an original 'Ventures' off-white Mosrite in mint condition. Not a great guitar, but I imagine it might be worth something now.
I used to have a Fender acoustic 12 string which was pretty sweet.
R&R Guitar HOF'ers? So many worthy..One of my picks would have to be Jan Ackerman (played with a group called Focus/Just incredible)-Leslie West, Hendrix, Clapton, Blackmore would be a gr8 5 to start.
Should Steve Popper be in there? Or at least considered? Grant Green is a good call, what about way back to Charlie Christian?
What about Jeff Beck?
My main guitar is a Tele, so I gotta vote for that.
No guitarist Hall of Fame would be complete without the late Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I had an ex-BF who adored Tony Iommi.
Pete Townshend anyone?
The Edge?
Alex Lifeson?
Eric Johnson?
Oh .... and BB King .... of course ...
"Oh …. and BB King …. of course …"
And of course the man of whom B.B. said...
"He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats"

Depends on the tune. I'm a strat dude, but if I need to lay down some scratch it's the tele.
Here's my GTR HOF in no order:
1) Hendrix
2) Eric Johnson
3) Clapton
4) Nile Rodgers
5) Jeff Beck
6) Steve Stevens
7) Eddie Van Halen
