That photograph really reminds me of "Taxi Driver." There was something trippy about those visuals in that movie, capturing the slick streets after a rain at night.
[4] no, i'm still on this HUGE blue note kick. bobo's playing drums on Charlie Rouse's "Bossa Nova Bacchanal" from 1962. i like Rouse from his days with Monk. then, randomly, Bobo is playing "mallets" on ONE track from a Bobby Hutcherson date in 1975 called "Montara". i didn't know Bobo played mallets. i need to get me some Cal Tjader, for certain. i haven't listened to either of these cd's yet and i have to go teach drums now, but i'll check 'em out soon...
i also need to compile a list of this baseball "library" i recently acquired (at a used cd shop, no less!) and get it to you. i think you'll dig the whole thing - the story and the reads!
Bobby Hutcherson! Sweet. He was a little out for my taste, though I like some of what I've heard a lot, but then I've got very conservative tastes I guess.
Hutch, is terrific, but yeah, he can get pretty out there, for sure - so i completely understand the taste thing on that. (<- i have a bit of a "comma" problem there!)
i can't wait to find the time to go thru these BB books - not even to read, just to see what the hell i bought! - they're all sitting here in a coupla big cardboard boxes. i hope to get to it in the next coupla weeks, before Opening Day...
LOVE LOVE Bobby Hutcherson! thelarmis, check out the new "About" section at my website, just put in a Hutch reference yesterday by coincidence! you remember the address??
[1] Agree about the visuals, perfectly captured that 1970s gritty New yYork vibe. (In general though I think Taxi Driver a bit over-rated..and Cybil Shepard's beauty vanishes the minute she tries to "act"..)
What would you pick as the definitive NYC movie of the era?? I would have to go with either Serpico or Dog Day Afternoon, both Pacino classics. (Oh, for the days when De Niro and Pacino made good films!!)

I got a little bit of a "Panic in Needle Park" vibe, which really isn't all that different from a "Taxi Driver" one now that I think about it.
funny - i *just* got TWO cd's w/ Willie Bobo on them (as a sideguy) in the mail today!
Cal Tjader? Mongo? Which records did you get?

For sure, do share that story. Sounds great.
