"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Here Kid, Have an Egg

The wife just called from the Twin Cities.  She’s on her way home from Albeturkey, New Mexico, waiting for a connecting flight.  It is bright and sunny and cold in New York today, Easter Sunday.  I’ve got the windows open, soup is on the stove.  Time to warm up the day-old baguette, fix a salad and have some lunch.

Joba makes his season debut this afternoon in KC as the Yanks go for the sweep.  Good day for a feast, eh?  House money.  Step on ’em, boys.  Let’s Go Yankees.

I don't know about you, but that eerily reminded me of John Henry coveting Mark Teixeira!

What a Dead End Kid indeed!

I really like Flash and Cone calling a game... It's truly a wonderful perspective on so many levels!

[1] Speaking of...

Texeira scratched from lineup today...wrist in a brace...paging Dr. Sheffield?

3 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Apr 12, 2009 1:47 pm

Interesting to hear Bugs go Yosemite Sam while brawling with the kid.

Gil Meche was great in his first start, but Farnsy blew it for him. Looking forward to a duel between Meche and Joba, though I'm hoping the Yankee bats will stay hot and make it more like the first two games in this series. Don't want to cool off with the Rays lurking tomorrow.

Of course, I'll probably watch the game on DVR this evening as Beck and I are very close to being late for Easter dinner at mom's.

Pete Abe on Tex:

“Better one or two days now than two or three weeks later,” he said.

He’s day-to-day. I would expect the Yankees to get him X-rayed tomorrow in Tampa and checked out by their own doctors. Why would they not?

5 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Apr 12, 2009 1:52 pm

Even with Posada out day game after night game and Tex hurt, Girardi still rested Damon, giving Melky his first start. Ugly lineup. Swish is at first, but I take back what I said about the Yankee bats. Joba better be on his game today.

6 ms october   ~  Apr 12, 2009 1:58 pm

just starting to settle in after a move - so looking forward to some good sun afternoon baseball.

joba needs to make it 4 nice pitching performances in a row.

[5] i get the sense that once girardi decides to do something he gets a bit hell bent on it - he wanted to rest damon yesterday and didn't because of the late scratch for tex - so he does it today, despite as you point out the ugly lineup we get as a result.

oh and the o's are playing pretty good baseball to start the year. i hope they come back to earth pretty soon.

7 Eirias   ~  Apr 12, 2009 1:59 pm

So, Tokyo, just how good are the Seibu Lions? Rasner three-hit them.

8 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:03 pm

Girardi drives me nuts sometimes. I thought he said he wasn't going to do this this year? Does Johnny Damon REALLY need a day off six days in?

9 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:12 pm

Damon is a bad history with Gil Meche. I think it's a good call leaving him out of the line-up today.

10 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:13 pm

Attaboy.

11 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:13 pm

Now run.

12 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:14 pm

Run damnit.

13 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:15 pm

RUN.

14 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:16 pm

Are we back to this stupid philosophy of only running on two strikes?

15 Eirias   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:19 pm

[14] Sure. It isn't like statistics have indicated that this is a bad idea, right?

16 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:20 pm

Four in a row for Mattpat. That's a free pass.

17 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:21 pm

Run Brett Run!

18 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:22 pm

You've got to be kidding me - I was not expecting that at all! Go Brett go!

19 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:22 pm

[15] It drives me up a wall. Especially with Gardner. The man does one thing well and we're going to wait until the hitter needs to start fouling every pitch off.

I'm too young to remember Rickey in his prime. Did he plant himself on first base until there were two strikes?

20 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:23 pm

See, he ran. :)

21 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:23 pm

nice gardner!! That is where his value is so it is good to see it pay off.

22 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:25 pm

Michael Kay always sounds so pained when he says "Kyle Farnsworth blows the game" And he's said it alot

23 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:28 pm

i've been looking forward to seeing joba. hope he starts out well.

24 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:28 pm

Good start.

25 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:31 pm

It is a fugly lineup as Tex will be back soon (we hope)... but we were ready to hang Girardi last year... and he did a LOT with our lineup. A full year of Giambi in the field and a healthy and productive JD. Best to have our ugly games against bad teams anyway. I give Girardi a pass. He's earned it.

26 Eirias   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:31 pm

10 pitches? Who is this man?

27 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:31 pm

I love how Joba is pounding the zone

28 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:32 pm

[25] Further, the KC lineup is also fugly

29 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:33 pm

Just signed up for Extra Innings. Today is the last day of their sale ($30 off). So now, without any other bells and whistles, I'm paying an average of $130/mth for TV. I'm a cheap guy but that seems like a lot. I wonder if there is a better/cheaper way....

30 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:35 pm

Ah, just finished mowing the law for the first time this year. Probably could have waited a week or two, but it's about 50 with the sun shining. Gotta be outside today and wake up the grass. Also cleaned out the old hosta stuff.

Next up, washing the dog.

31 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:38 pm

Ransom has looked terrible; might be time to give him a break to get his mind reset. Reboot his season...

32 PJ   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:38 pm

Joba sure looked sharp in that inning!

33 Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:39 pm

Melky + Ransom = at least 6 auto outs for Meche today. : /

34 randym77   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:40 pm

Don't friend Denny Neagle. He'll hit on your girlfriend.

35 Eirias   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:43 pm

11 pitches? Who is this man?

36 PJ   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:43 pm

[19] Rickey ran whenever Rickey wanted to...

;)

37 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:43 pm

[31] give Pena a start?

38 monkeypants   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:49 pm

[4], [25] Regarding Tex:

Girardi said he would start today. Instead he's out and wearing a brace. Girardi now says he's day-to-day. Now, given Girardi's past statements about injuries...

More seriously, I'm not *really* worried...yet...

39 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:51 pm

good game in miami. santana has 13 k's in 7 innings. johnson didn't give up a hit til the 6th. Fish - 2, Muts - 0.

40 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:51 pm

[38] The nice thing is, we have Swisher on the bench, who can come in and be productive. What a crazy idea, having a good bench.

41 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:54 pm

Crud.

42 Eirias   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:54 pm

Crapsticks.

43 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:55 pm

There goes the
(a) Perfect game
(b) No hitter
(c) shut-out
(d) lead.

44 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:56 pm

Double Plus Ungood. or something like that. how'd that saying go again?!

45 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:56 pm

Yeesh.

46 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:57 pm

What up with all these belt-high down the middle fastballs

47 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:58 pm

No, the homer was on a slider. But, yeah, right over the middle.

48 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:58 pm

[44] per [43] quadrupleplus ungood

49 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:59 pm

ah, Swish'll get it back for us!

50 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2009 2:59 pm

joba didn't look good that inning. hopefully just a burp

51 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:02 pm

[49] or not.

52 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:03 pm

This game changed complexion rapidly.

53 Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:04 pm

Is there a logical reason why the MLB network is not showing live games on a Sunday afternoon?
Anyone?

54 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:05 pm

[53] They have more important things to do than put baseball games on television. Quit yer whinin'.

55 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:09 pm

TB beating up the O's, 7-0.

56 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:11 pm

Rays are destroying the Oreo's 8-0, halfway thru.

Brandon Inge already has 4 homers.

jesus joba. it's raining pretty hard, innit?

57 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:12 pm

[55] something about great minds...! ; )

58 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:12 pm

Gulp.

59 Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:15 pm

I get a kick out of Santana throwing a gem and the Mets still losing. But that's just me. Now, Joba, roll one of them dp's.

60 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:18 pm

[59] Or that.

61 Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:19 pm

Or just Burnett him.

62 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:20 pm

So, when Molina tags DeJesus there, is it because (i) he's "selling it" to the ump (that DeJesus swung) or (ii) he just does it automatically without thinking or (iii) he doesn't know the Dropped Third Strike rule?

63 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:20 pm

[57] Or great hands?

64 Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:21 pm

booooooo

65 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:21 pm

Oh fer pete's sake.

66 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:21 pm

oh-oh. Will the rain hold off? Bad news.

67 randym77   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:21 pm

Ugh. :-(

68 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:21 pm

Oh Noes!

69 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:22 pm

Hm. So, there is no such thing as an error, I guess.

70 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:22 pm

fuck! now, we'll go down in order and they'll call the game. bollocks.

71 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:24 pm

Oh how I love when the Yankees turn into the Keystone Kops.

72 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:24 pm

I wasn't in the mood for pasta at all.

73 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:25 pm

What a mess

74 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:25 pm

and the wheels of the bus...completely fall off.

75 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:25 pm

Um, I leave to wash the dog at 1-0 Yankees, and come back to this?

76 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:26 pm

[75] It was ugly. Don't ask about the ball that rolled through Swisher's *and* Cano's legs.

77 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:27 pm

I remember him seemingly going out of his way to get Wilson Betemit playing time.

That was awful.

78 Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:28 pm

These 30+ pitch innings blow.

79 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:29 pm

[78] yes, but joba's still at a respectable count for the game. who knows if there'll even be a bottom of the 5th for him to pitch though...

80 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:32 pm

here's why i wish Robbie had stolen base speed...

81 randym77   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:33 pm

Brett Gardner's job is safe.

82 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:33 pm

great job, Melkdud. pathetic.

83 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:33 pm

I don't care what Damon's numbers against Meche are. He had to be better than Melky.

84 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:34 pm

wow i must be really behind. i assume [80] and [81] were referencing the double play?

85 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:35 pm

fuckin' 'ell.

86 Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:35 pm

When I said Melky and Ransom were 6 free outs for Menche, I failed to remember the Melk-Dud could get 2 outs with one svelte swing of the bat. Oy.

87 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:37 pm

[84] if robbie was quick, he'd be able to steal 2nd there and make a bunt attempt more acceptable in a 2-run defecit. in the rain, Buck probably doesn't catch him. or, he stays outta the DP...

cody's really shitting the bed thus far...

will they call the game now? hope not...

88 PJ   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:38 pm

Joba deserved better than that...

I'm just sayin'.

89 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:38 pm

[87] Tim McCarver has repeatedly declared that Cano is fast. Nearest I can determine, its based on Cano being Hispanic.

90 randym77   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:39 pm

The Pirates just turned a triple play.

91 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:39 pm

[88] Are you suggesting someone should have fielded a ground ball that went through two men's legs?

You're just negative.

92 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:40 pm

[89] and/or that he's a middle infielder

93 PJ   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:41 pm

[91] LOL Yeah, I get that a lot.

He deserved a better lineup versus Meche, too...

94 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:41 pm

did dejesus lean into it, per usual, or was it blatant?

95 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:42 pm

Cano fucked that play up.

96 Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:42 pm

Cano was spaced out. Again.

97 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:43 pm

[92] Yeah, its a combination of the two, I'd say.

98 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:43 pm

[90] thanks! lookin' forward to seeing the highlights later...

99 PJ   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:43 pm

[94] Nope... just another overthrown slider of the front foot...

100 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:44 pm

Um, this isn't good.

103 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:48 pm

or not

104 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:48 pm

Is Brett Gardner hitting into a lot of double plays?

105 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:48 pm

at least we're making meche work. oh wait...

106 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:48 pm

yes, he is.

107 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:48 pm

ofer cryin out loud

108 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:49 pm

Jeter looks putrid so far this year. Soft grounder after soft grounder after soft grounder.

109 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:50 pm

jeez, i just got another "warning" from word press. telling me to "slow down" 'coz i'm posting too quickly. that's a crock 'o shit! i don't even like the tone. it's like the computer warning is being terse and curt: "slow the fuck down, dude!" bollocks all the way around...

110 Just Fair   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:51 pm

[97] Check out MLB.Com. The triple play is up already. Man, my senior year my team managed to hit into two triple plays in the same game. Luckily, I wasn't at bat or on base for either of them.

111 randym77   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:54 pm

[110] The Reds kind of brought it on themselves. A double hit and run left them sitting ducks.

But Harang got the complete game shutout anyway.

112 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:57 pm

"quality start". 6 innings, 89 pitches. 5 k's, 1 BB. 5 hits, 1 HBP. of course, 3 of those hits went for extra bases. 1 of them, scored a run and shoulda been an error. all in all, not a bad start - in the rain, no less - for Joba. i guess Joe could send him out for another inning, but maybe he shouldn't. is it still raining in KC? i'd send it to the 'pen...

113 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:57 pm

[111] The Nats attempted a hit and run with Adam Dunn and Josh Willingham the other day.

114 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:58 pm

Now can we please not double off another leadoff single

115 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:58 pm

good start, Swish! why can't espn update him to be in a Yankees cap by now? i mean, "the worldwide leader in sports" - c'mon!

116 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:58 pm

Alright, rally time!

117 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:59 pm

[113] i'm "watching" them lose to the Braves right now. it's on mute, i'm listening to music and mostly following the Yanks, but...it's on.

118 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:59 pm

I think I saw edwar warming in the pen

119 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 3:59 pm

alright, i'm liking this "rally." let's make it stand up!

120 randym77   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:00 pm

[113] Was Dunn the hitter or the runner?

121 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:01 pm

A productive GIDP from the Melkdud.

128 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:03 pm

i'll take it!

melky - you BEST get the runner from 3rd in. my guess is...via a DP.

129 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:03 pm

That's hilarious. Melky trying so hard to be useless, but accomplishes something despite himself.

130 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:03 pm

Did they say there was a bench clearing brawl in Anaheim?

140 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:14 pm

Rays up 11-0. longoria has gone long 5 times already. hope they're using up all their runs today!

keep it up bruney!

141 Raf   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:15 pm

[139] Yes they did. Abreu vs Beckett... Abreu called time while Beckett was in his delivery, Beckett buzzed Abreu, Abreu takes exception, Beckett responds, benches clear.

142 randym77   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:15 pm

Dunn is actually a pretty good runner. Not very fast, but smart on the basepaths.

143 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:16 pm

[139] dunno, but i wish the brawl would erase the 2 runs the Shit Sox already scored. i've gone a nice 6 months with zero hatred inside of me. i can't describe how much i loathe that entire organization. i simply can't stand them...

144 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:17 pm

VERY nice, bruney! thanking you.

147 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:18 pm

148 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:19 pm

[142] yeah, it's true. he used to steal some bags and there was talk long ago of using him as a leadoff guy 'coz his OBP is so good...

149 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:21 pm

That may be the first time Bloomquist has caught a ball this series.

150 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:21 pm

Wow that Beckett pitch was really way out of line. And it's not like Abreu is a big antagonist. what a dipshit

151 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:22 pm

i love the mlb.tv upgrades. watching the bench clearing brawl now. not a brawl at all but beckett had no business throwing that ball like that.

152 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:23 pm

[142] He almost killed himself getting back to first when Willingham forgot to swing.

153 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:23 pm

Oh christ. Marte.

154 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:26 pm

i guess Pronk is finding his stroke back a bit - he's got 3 homers...

155 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:27 pm

angels better buzz someone on the sox. that lasted quite a while. and it looks like only angels get tossed?

156 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:28 pm

Ugh.

157 randym77   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:28 pm

[152] You're giving me flashbacks to Game 5, 2005. When Torre called the hit and run, Bernie forgot to swing, and Robbie Cano was hung out to dry.

158 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:28 pm

If only we had Joba to pitch the eighth!

159 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:29 pm

[153] agreed. ugh. don't bring marte into a 1-run ballgame. just don't do it...

160 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:29 pm

i thought Edwar was warming up in the 6th...

161 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:29 pm

Lefty batter, Marte is the right call.

162 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:30 pm

Joba's ERA is fixed.

163 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:31 pm

[155] well, hopefully the layoff will ill-affect Fuckett.

earlier ball thru Swish AND Robbie, has been ruled an error. Joba only gave up 1 earnie...

164 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:31 pm

DeJesus is doing a good job.
Did a good job, despite the out.

165 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:31 pm

We lucked out there. Get him out.

166 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:32 pm

Wow, watching that altercation in Anaheim, Beckett needs to be suspended - I can't believe he came up and antagonized Scoccia like that. Amazing the Angles got disciplined for that. amazing.

167 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:32 pm

Cool, when Joba left the game, he was on the hook for an L and 3 ER. He sits down for an hour, and he's in line for the W and has only 1 ER.

Ah, that's what Melky is good for!

168 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:32 pm

[162] what has it gone down to? it hasn't been fixed in the box score i checked yet...

169 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:33 pm

[166] i hope i get to see highlights of the Bucs' triple play and lowlights of the brawl later...

170 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:34 pm

Interesting -- I think I'd go with Edwar here. But it's only one out, this could work.
The key is that any base-runner should result in Mo... but it would never happen.

rbj, if the Royals get a man on, could you convince Girardi that this is the ninth inning?

171 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:35 pm

it's Veras.

172 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:35 pm

I duno about edwar here - homer prone....

173 seamus   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:35 pm

[155] i think i was wrong and no Angels got tossed. it just looked like they did. but i turned it off so not 100% sure.

174 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:36 pm

I get it -- if Veras puts a guy on, we'll get Coked up.

175 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:36 pm

[168] 1.5

176 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:37 pm

I really don't like Jose Veras.

177 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:37 pm

Christ. Shoulda been Edwar.

178 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:38 pm

Shoulda been Mo

179 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:39 pm

[175] nice. walking butler on 5 pitches is not nice. let's get outta this please...

180 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:39 pm

Is Mo even warming up?

181 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:41 pm

Curses.

182 randym77   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:41 pm

boooooooo!

183 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:42 pm

I really fucking hate our bullpen. The only saving grace is that any of them can be made to go away. No Kyle Farnsworth's this year.

184 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:42 pm

fuck. and. shit.

185 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:42 pm

Unbelievable.

186 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:42 pm

Of course.

187 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:43 pm

You've got to be fucking kidding me. 4 outs to go and we dick around with Veras and Coke.

188 Raf   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:43 pm

[180] Apparently not

189 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:43 pm

Coulda just left in Marte, that would have worked.

190 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:43 pm

I just wanted this team to get moving early his year. I really don't want to be a .500 team at the allstar break AGAIN.

191 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:43 pm

holy crap. ballgame. soria will shut us down and that's that. bollocks.

192 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:44 pm

[189] I'm sure Marte could have done this.

193 RIYank   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:44 pm

[187] Coke is a good pitcher.
But Mo was the right call, I agree.

Oh, man. What an awful inning.

194 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:44 pm

marte too. he just got lucky...

195 randym77   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:44 pm

BOOOOO!!!!!

196 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:44 pm

Bye Bye Phil. Don't let the door hit you on the ass.

197 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:45 pm

This is disgusting. This is on Girardi unless Mo is hurt

198 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:45 pm

oh. my. god. what the fuck just happened???

199 PJ   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:46 pm

That's on Girardi for micromanaging atainst the fricken Royals!

They should of got the hell out of there with BB throwing two and Mo closing...

Pfft!

200 ny2ca2dc   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:47 pm

Abomination.

The Yankees got their own version of a triple play today, too!

Bad defense, bad offense, bad managing...

202 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:48 pm

Kay is acting like Veras is good/was pitching well.

203 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:49 pm

With my luck, they'll call up the guy that always gets bombed and Kay insists his numbers are artificially inflated.

204 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:51 pm

And the fact that we were beat by John Buck is that much more appalling.

205 Raf   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:54 pm

defeat from the jaws of victory?

206 rbj   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:57 pm

Glad I spent most of the afternoon doing chores and didn't invest much time in this fustercluck.

207 thelarmis   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:57 pm

well, that sucked. : /

208 PJ   ~  Apr 12, 2009 4:58 pm

Well, off to Tampa. They better play better than that!

Happy Easter everyone! Have a great rest of your day!

209 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 5:10 pm

Does any manager outsmart himself as much as Joe Girardi? Remember that game last year, ironically enough against the Royals, where we were down one in the ninth, first and second. For no discernible reason, other than to get Betemit in ANOTHER game, he put Betemit in for the *trail runner* and then doesn't even put on a play. He just made a MOVE perhaps in an attempt to TRICK SOMEONE(!!!!!!!) and then didn't follow up.

He put the joke lineup in today and then made MOVES in the 8th.

210 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 12, 2009 5:12 pm

This loss is definitely on Girardi. Everytime a manager cycles through his bullpen, he is bound to find the guy who is due for a bad day. Girardi basically gave this game away. Just because most managers would probably do the same isn't an excuse. A savy manager can really make a difference by avoiding such losses. I keep hoping Girardi will be such a manager, but after games liek today I keep thinking I am fooling myself.

211 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 5:18 pm

I don't think Joe Girardi is nearly as good a manger as Torre was, and Torre gets dumped on here.

212 randym77   ~  Apr 12, 2009 5:30 pm

Poor Phil Coke looked like he was about to cry.

213 Eirias   ~  Apr 12, 2009 7:43 pm

[211] I think you are wholeheartedly wrong. Anyone who manages from a scientific or quantitative perspective, which I believe Girardi at least attempts to do, is better in my book. The one thing everyone claims Torre could do was manage the egos in the clubhouse; he was the "calm hand at the tiller." Girardi hasn't had any problems in that regard and he is at least trying not to do some of the idiocies ingrained into seemingly every manager there is.

214 Joel   ~  Apr 12, 2009 8:06 pm

They gave Marte $12 million for 3 years to pitch to lefties and righties.

Bobby V. on speed dial.

215 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 12, 2009 10:35 pm

[213] I think that putting aside his...creative honesty when dealing with the media, his in game management seems to be built around MOVEZ.

Periodically during a game he just decides Time for a Move! whether or not the situation calls for a move or he has the personnel to pull off such a move. Wilson Betemit as a defensive replacement, Wilson Betemit as a pinch runner, oddball bullpen switches, he's like LaRussa with even less logic behind all his moves.

216 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 12, 2009 11:21 pm

[215] Who cares how he deals with the media. That stuff has no bearing on in-game situations. I agree with [213] that Girardi has a much better approach to game management than Torre did, but while I keep expecting him to become one of the better managers in the game, he does seem to out think himself too often. In the end, that type of manager usually turns out to be neutral; I think Girardi has the potential to be an asset, so that's why games like today are very, very exasperating.

217 Joel   ~  Apr 13, 2009 12:56 pm

[216] This ain't Scranton (or even Florida). You don't get to manage The New York Yankees with "the potential to be an asset."

With a 39 year-old Mo, a 36 year-old Jorge, a 35 year-old Jeter, and a 33 year-old A-Rod, I'm not excited about waiting for the manager to grow into the job.

218 Yankster   ~  Apr 13, 2009 10:39 pm

um, swisher pitching. and well.
