The rainout gives the Yankees numerous rotation options (I have a vested interest in their decision, as I have tickets for next Tuesday night in Comerica).
OPTION 1 (keep rotation in tact while skipping Wang):
Tues: Pettitte
Wed: CC
Fri: Joba
Sat: AJ
Sun: Pettitte
Mon: CC
Tues: Joba
Wed: Wang
The disadvantage here is that Joba and AJ provide similar back-to-back looks against the Sox. It also spoils the opportunity for the Yanks to waive their newest toy (CC) in Boston's face.
OPTION 2: Break up the power righties, break up the lefties
Tues: Pettitte
Wed: Joba
Fri: CC
Sat: AJ
Sun: Pettitte
Mon: Joba
Tues: Wang
Wed: CC
The drawback of this rotation is that the one guy who remains on a 5-day cycle is the guy whose innings you want to limit.
OPTION 3: Maximize Joba's rest
Tues: CC
Wed: Pettitte
Fri: AJ
Sat: Joba
Sun: CC
Mon: Pettitte
Tues: AJ
Wed: Wang
Like Option 1, this option throws AJ and Joba back-to-back against Boston and fails to split the lefties.
AGGGH! And Option 3 has AJ going on 4 days rest. So you've got to swap Wang and AJ next week, and AJ and Joba are back-to-back again.
Bottom line is that, since Tuesday will be the 5th consecutive game, Wang (or Hughes) will be pitching. I witnessed Mussina's "last straw" start in Comerica in 2007. I hope that Wang will have a better fate.
Yep, that's Option 1. I'm a bit surprised, since Options 2 and 3 provide solutions to other problems.
PeteAbe says "No word yet as to when (Wang) will pitch next," but certainly won't be one of the other 4 on Tuesday in Detroit. If it's not Wang it will probably be Hughes.
Nerts. There go my plans for the evening, lying on the couch and watching the game.
Ted Berg is funny
damn. and tonight's game was gonna be on my TV, not my computer...
I miss Will and Cliff on those already...

Oops. Just noticed that Option 1 has Joba going on 4 days rest. So it now becomes
Tues: Pettitte
Wed: CC
Fri: Joba
Sat: AJ
Sun: Pettitte
Mon: CC
Tues: Wang
Wed: Joba
This option is now a bit worse, as it leaves Joba and AJ (as well as Pettitte and CC) back-to-back indefinitely.
AGGGH! And Option 3 has AJ going on 4 days rest. So you've got to swap Wang and AJ next week, and AJ and Joba are back-to-back again.

The rotation through Sunday has been decided, and it's
Pettitte
CC
(Day off Thursday)
Joba
AJ
Pettitte
So that's your Option 1, Michigan.
