I Got Five On It

It’s even cooler today than it was yesterday–actually, it warmed up nicely by the end of the game on Saturday.

AJ Burnett is in an ideal situation.  He hasn’t pitched great, needs a strong outing, and hey, the Yanks have a modest four-game winning streak that needs tending.

Let’s hope he comes out aces and not…like this famous knucklehead.

The funny thing about Burnett is he almost always looks like he could dominate. But then he doesn't.

2 Rich   ~  May 17, 2009 11:00 am

[1] AJ seems to have trouble maintaining his focus throughout some games. Something happens, and it makes it difficult for him to repeat his delivery or maintain his arm slot. His command is affected, and his pitches become hittable.

It wont' happen because he makes too much money, but I think he would be a better candidate for the pen than Joba. His stuff would be dynamite for an inning or two.

3 PJ   ~  May 17, 2009 11:05 am

[1] Well he's certainly in the right place Hawk, where apparently looks are the among highest of priorities... whether deceiving or otherwise...

: )

4 Mattpat11   ~  May 17, 2009 11:07 am

Its time for Burnett to be the 82 million dollar man.

5 The Hawk   ~  May 17, 2009 11:11 am

[2] Yeah, even then though, I don't see it in his body language. He always pretty much looks the same, so you get the idea he's on an even keel, but as you say he's apparently not. It's like at age 31 (32?) he's matured enough to project steadiness but he still gets rattled in Hughesian fashion (okay maybe not that bad).

6 Rich   ~  May 17, 2009 11:31 am

AJ really needs to pitch well given this lineup:

Jeter SS
Damon LF
Texeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Swisher RF
Cabrera CF
Pena 2B
Cash C

7 Dimelo   ~  May 17, 2009 11:36 am

It's weird, even though AJ hasn't been pitching that well, I still feel he's going to be a good signing. Or maybe I just think he's going to be better than the Pavano signing, but I understand that's setting the bar really low. That's akin to saying, Gardner should play in the major leagues cause he can hit better than me.

8 The Hawk   ~  May 17, 2009 11:50 am

[7] Speaking of, I'm glad not to see Gardner in the lineup - small doses, please - but I'd rather he be in there than Swisher. The guy needs a break - badly.

9 PJ   ~  May 17, 2009 11:54 am

[6] "AJ really needs to pitch well given this lineup."

Deja vu...

10 Bum Rush   ~  May 17, 2009 11:58 am

Its time for Burnett to be the 82 million dollar man.

There isn't a clock that keeps that time.

Or maybe I just think he’s going to be better than the Pavano signing

That's a very, very low bar, indeed, like 27 starts in the next three years.

11 Horace Clarke Era   ~  May 17, 2009 12:06 pm

What's wrong with the line-up? We KNOW the C is going to be bad till Jorge's back. And wasn't everyone in love with Pena a few days ago? Cano can and should get a day off now and again.

Swisher, too ... and his current performance reinforces why I thought the loss of Nady was a big deal and am really hoping he gets back. Swisher is streaky, both ways, Nady seems steadier at decent +. Swish, being an, er, swish hitter, is really useful off the bench, and for spelling Tex at 1st when we want the big guy's bat but want to give him a slight rest (worked yesterday!). Cashman didn't trade either Swish or X in order to give us the bench depth people wanted. And I think he was right. Max value for Nady issues? The reality is Yankees will chase free agents, and we needed the depth for THIS year. The FA signings were meant to try to get us into the playoffs again ... the annual autumn crapshoot.

Team character ... someone posted they see it as 'how does the team win'? But every team swings around and wins in different ways. Big bat Jays won 2-1 yesterday as an unknown kid pitched brilliantly (vs a weak Chisox lineup, mind you). The Rangers of the monster bats are getting shockingly good pitching ...

I think NY, out the gate, was seen to have shifted towards winning on the mound. CC/Wang/AJ/Joba/Andy was assessed as one of the 2-3 best staffs in the league, and maybe only Angels when healthy are better on paper. The bullpen was seen (funny, looking back) as a strength, with lots of young arms ready to contribute. People worried about the batting, but when we landed Tex that was seen as a keep it competitive move ... am I wrong?

So I'd say we were expected to win with top-flight pitching and good enough batting.

I still think that 'character' usually comes down to the manager's personality and his game style.

really nice play by pena

i guess we just have to accept that a lot of baserunners are part of the deal with aj - i am going to call it whip lash

25 PJ   ~  May 17, 2009 1:53 pm

[21] While golfing one day, Yogi came to a hole that required a shot to be hit over a large pond. He said as he looked at his feet, "I'm going to hit this next shot into the water." His playing partner replied, "C'mon Yogi! Think positively!" Yogi then responded, "Ok, I'm positive I'm going to hit this next shot into the water!"

[30] "Vary" a dull moment with these "Mensa Members!"

: )

32 OldYanksFan   ~  May 17, 2009 2:28 pm

O Cabrera made a slick play yesterday. Man on 1st, 2 out, a ground ball is hit up the middle. He ranges far to his left and is about to glove the ball, but he won't have time to get the runner at 2nd. Instead, as soon as the ball touches his glove, he bowls it, right from his glove. The ball rolls to the 2nd baseman, and the guy is just out. Very creative.

33 OldYanksFan   ~  May 17, 2009 2:32 pm

So... if Holliday is available as an FA, what's the max you would go to get him? Would 5/$80 do it?

52 The Hawk   ~  May 17, 2009 3:19 pm

It seems odd to me that a run can score from a wild pitch and passed ball but it's still considered earned.

53 RagingTartabull   ~  May 17, 2009 3:19 pm

[50] Agreed, the offense is tempting but I do not see him at catcher his whole career

56 rbj   ~  May 17, 2009 3:21 pm

Um, ya know Yankees if you want to score about 4-5 runs while I'm finishing up outside, it is ok with me.

57 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 3:21 pm

per pete abe:

Chien-Ming Wang dominated today in Scranton in the first game of a doubleheader. 7 innings, 4 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strikeout. 75 pitches / 49 strikes, 12 of the 21 outs on the ground. He has thrown 13 scoreless innings in AAA. Be interesting to see what the Yankees do next with him.

Brian Bruney is expected to start the second game to get his inning in.

76 The Hawk   ~  May 17, 2009 3:31 pm

Wow I loved that shot of Melky and Matsui talking in the dugout. Just a funny pair ... I think Melky was busting Matsui's chops, cause Matsui had a bemused look on his face and responded to something Melky said by saying "I'm slow ... that's right" and then Melky ran in place to illustrate.

77 OldYanksFan   ~  May 17, 2009 3:31 pm

On a side note, from the Boston Globe:

Ortiz said that, physically, he's "better than ever," but he also hinted at a personal issue. "People don't know," Ortiz said. "Sometimes they think we just come here to play baseball and that's it. We're human beings like everyone else. We have things to worry about. Sometimes that gets in the way. It's hard to have that free open mind you need to play this game. There's no way you can play this game with a busy mind. No way."

Hmm, that sounds suspiciously unmeasurable. I call bull****!

I think Brett thought Mauer was going to throw to first. If he does easy score.

250 Chyll Will   ~  May 17, 2009 4:27 pm

[240] Not with one out it's not. At worst you have first and third with one out. Second and third if you figure they guard for stealing home on a throw to second. Bad judgment by Gardner, but nothing to kill him for. Now we're stuck with Veras...

251 The Hawk   ~  May 17, 2009 4:28 pm

That was a moronic play by Gardner. He got deked by Mauer though I'm not sure Mauer even did it on purpose. But he was not going to throw to first. and Gardner should have known that.

252 PJ   ~  May 17, 2009 4:29 pm

Stupidity > "Heaps of Karma"

No way do Yankees catchers play with such "baseball savvy" as Mauer there in that instance, no way...

: /

253 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 4:29 pm

at least aceves and not veras.

255 cult of basebaal   ~  May 17, 2009 4:29 pm

[249] he did. that's a GREAT play by mauer ... pump fake to 1st and turn and see if the runner was too far off 3rd

256 Chyll Will   ~  May 17, 2009 4:29 pm

Ohh good, Aceves.

257 RagingTartabull   ~  May 17, 2009 4:29 pm

well if we're gonna lose this game, at least it won't have to be with Veras on the mound

258 Just Fair   ~  May 17, 2009 4:29 pm

I don't think it was an intentional pump fake, Mauer just realized he didn't have a play.

259 BuckFoston   ~  May 17, 2009 4:30 pm

It wasn't that dumb. Very risky, and didn't payoff. But I like to see the Yankees being aggressive, make the other team make the plays, be on their toes.

260 The Hawk   ~  May 17, 2009 4:30 pm

I think it may also be a case of the "competition" between Gardner and Cabrera getting out of hand.

263 51cq24   ~  May 17, 2009 4:31 pm

[251] don't think it was on purpose, he didn't even really fake, he just started to go there then realized it would be idiotic.

265 RagingTartabull   ~  May 17, 2009 4:31 pm

Aceves makes me think of Ramiro Mendoza...just throwing that out there

266 The Hawk   ~  May 17, 2009 4:31 pm

With one out and Cano up, I want Gardner staying the **** put. Mauer was way too close to home to pull that nonsense.

273 PJ   ~  May 17, 2009 4:33 pm

[262] heh heh

Not only am I saying that, I'm saying Po and Molina either throw to 1B, or are too slow and lethargic to beat such a runner to the plate from that far away.

I'm reminded of that play earlier this year where Po left the plate vacant to "cover the dugout" because the pitcher tried to field the ball...

285 OldYanksFan   ~  May 17, 2009 4:39 pm

We have had plenty of time to think about the play... after the fact. For Gardy, it was a split second, reaction play. It turned out bad, but took a great play by Mauer.

I hate when we make an out, but ya can't do it better then that one.

[304] i love it! : )

312 rbj   ~  May 17, 2009 4:46 pm

Shoot, went downstairs to load up the washing machine. Missed the Yankees scoring again. I guess I'm banned from all Sunday afternoon games.

313 Chyll Will   ~  May 17, 2009 4:47 pm

[304] That's gotta stick! >;)

[312] If nothing but to keep the Monday Morning Quarterbacks at the major rags from being snarky. They think a Yankee win is bad for business unless they are prepared to cash in. Oh well, re-writes galore!

316 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 4:50 pm

[309] they said 1972. i didn't clear it by much! ; )

317 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 4:52 pm

[312] yes, you are banned! ; )

[313] ooh, the pressure! i can do it, i can do it, i can do it!!! ; )

320 Chyll Will   ~  May 17, 2009 4:59 pm

[316] You're right. Me too! >;)

321 rbj   ~  May 17, 2009 4:59 pm

Not only are these last few wins nice, it seems that the 2009 Yankees don't just give up when they are down. That's what last year's team felt like. "We're down, we're gonna lose, no need to try"

And even though Brett's run wasn't a good play, I'd rather have an error of aggression than an error of passivity.

322 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 5:03 pm

[308] AJ had an in-game WHIP of almost 2 and was pretty wild. he racked up several K's and gave up only 2 runs, but he threw a lot of pitches.

[320] nice. so, am i closer to the age-range you were thinkin'?!

323 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 5:05 pm

halladay is 8-1.

i have a rare monday night off tomorrow and the game is espn. i'm looking forward to watching Andy pitch manana!

324 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 5:06 pm

[321] and both Bruney and CMW threw well at Scranton today. We could have them AND Posada within a week or so.

I'm smellin' gellin'

326 PJ   ~  May 17, 2009 5:07 pm

For me, the best thing about today was Cult bestowing the absolute best nickname in relation to a login name I've ever seen in almost 16 years of being on the Interwebs, and I've seen my fair share!

Have a great rest to your Sunday everyone!

: )

327 ms october   ~  May 17, 2009 5:08 pm

[321] this team does seem more aggressive

[322] yeah i was trying to be generous to aj - his whip is frustrating - hence i feel aj starts cause whip lash

328 Dimelo   ~  May 17, 2009 5:08 pm

[321] I wouldn't necessarily call Gardner's play an 'error', I thought he made the right play just that Mauer made an even better recovery. Sometimes a good idea doesn't always equal a good result. I just tip my hat to Mauer.

329 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 5:09 pm

[326] here here! : )

330 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 5:10 pm

[327] Whiplash, is a great old-school thrash metal group from Jersey! : )

331 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 5:12 pm

i really LOVED Tex's terrific play w/ the bases juiced and him playing in. that was awesome. and jeter has 8 stolen bases...

332 Rich   ~  May 17, 2009 5:20 pm

Kudos to Giardi for making Aceves an integral part of the pen.

333 cult of basebaal   ~  May 17, 2009 5:23 pm

[330] named after a great old-school thrash metal song ...

334 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 5:24 pm

fuck - bases loaded for Bay, no out...

335 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 5:26 pm

[333] yes! Whiplash, will be releasing a brand new cd later this year and a dvd celebrating their 25 years!!! : )

i saw Exodus & Kreator Wed night and will be seeing TestAmenT in 2 weeks!!!

336 cult of basebaal   ~  May 17, 2009 5:30 pm

[335] never heard of them, i'll have to check them out

337 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 5:34 pm

vargas somehow wriggled out of the jam. still tied at 2. ichiro up...

[336] Whiplash, are pretty awesome, my friend! their debut is an all-time classic! i LOVE their sophomore release. the 3rd album, was different - new drummer and a "real" singer. it was thrashier and absolutely AWESOME! WSOU in Jersey, used to play them a lot. they went thru a mid-period, that was hit or miss. i liked some of it. not too very long ago, they did a reunion album and it ROCKED!!! not sure what the new album will be like, but i'm super psyched to find out!!! : )

338 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 5:39 pm

[336] ooh, looks like they're going back to the old trio format! original bass player got dead, the replacement guy used to play with the singer from the 3rd album. the 'new' drummer, from said release, is back in the fold. got all that?! ; )

I'm PSYCHED!

339 seamus   ~  May 17, 2009 6:10 pm

[338] man i haven't paid attention to the thrash scene for 15 years. i remember hitting some shows as a youngster. then i went all emo.

340 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 6:20 pm

[339] thrash still RULES, come on back! : )

some old classic bands are still releasing GREAT albums. besides the new Testament & Kreator records being amazing, the new Helstar is an instant classic!

besides Whiplash - Forbidden, Sacrifice, Defiance & Flotsam and Jetsam, should all have new releases this year! i haven't picked up the new Tankard yet, but i'm sure it'll be like ALL the other Tankard albums! : )

341 Horace Clarke Era   ~  May 17, 2009 6:23 pm

Here I is OYF ... may have to keep doing it this way for luck!

I give it to the pen, and actually AJ gutted a long way, too. He's going 6+ and 120+ for us, and it matters a lot. Didn't see anyone giving props to Tomko, but coming in first time ever for a team, bases loaded, late ... there's a reason for having veteran status, I guess. Even a mediocre vet. Tex made a helluva play there, game saver, flat out. We also got a break when left field for Minnesota decided to try to throw a shallow fly into the dugout with Flash Matsui running. Thank you, Span. (Not Emma, but thank you Emma, of course.) Good to see someone else's young OF goof, not happy with mental errors for Melky and Brettsker. As for B-sker trying to come home from 2nd ... dumb, but I can't actually get too agitated because it was f-ing close, and took a vg catcher play, diving. The city would be buzzing for a week if Mauer hadn't made it back and that actually WON a game.

Anyone think maybe the 'character' thing might be at least partly addressed, so far, in terms of gutting it out, winning late, that allegedly non-existent clutch stuff? I do remember Jeter, the young Jeter, saying over and again, 'We never think we're done. We always think we'll come back.'

342 RIYank   ~  May 17, 2009 6:26 pm

Hoss, you are taking this character thing waaayyyy too seriously.

343 seamus   ~  May 17, 2009 6:33 pm

[340] nothing like a good healthy music scene. I can still appreciate a good thrashing but just doesn't pull me in. alas. do enjoy it!

344 Chyll Will   ~  May 17, 2009 6:33 pm

[322] Yeah man, you're cool; tho no one says we always have to act our age >;)

345 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 6:35 pm

[341] i believe that was Tikki Tikki Tomko's 3rd appearance for us. he's gotten 7 outs. 4 hits, 1 of which was a solo shot, the only run he's given up...

meanwhile, it's still knotted at 2 in the Emerald City. headed to bottom 8...

346 seamus   ~  May 17, 2009 6:35 pm

[341] If the issue is a lack of characters, hire a writer! ok that was bad...

347 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 6:36 pm

[344] hell, i think i probably act a lot OLDER than my age. i'm quite boring, actually! : ~

348 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 6:37 pm

[346] or as Zappa called them: char-actors

[347] If you ever met me in person, you'd agree we think alike. But the idea is to not only think outside the box, but to also hold the box, which is filled with anything you like. My moodiness means contents vary...

350 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 6:52 pm

[349] i hear ya! i've been in a pretty good mood lately, for the most part. it's nice!

i certainly don't LOOK my age, though i've started to get a little closer here in recent times...

i still think we should try to have a sizable Banter meet-up in NYC sometime. as of now, it doesn't look like i'll be headed north til Turkey Day...

351 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 6:55 pm

pete abe on bruney's outing today at scranton:

One inning, two hits, one run, no walks and a strikeout. He hit 94, which is a tick or two below his usual velocity. He threw 17 pitches, 12 strikes.

With two outs, he allowed an RBI double by Andy Marte.

and the M's can't do with a leadoff man onboard against boston's bullshit. um, i mean, bullPEN...

352 seamus   ~  May 17, 2009 7:08 pm

c'mon seafaring buddies! pound the smelly apparel!

353 thelarmis   ~  May 17, 2009 7:20 pm

sox lose, yay! bottom of the 9th walk-off hit, after an error on nick green. unfortunately, it wasn't papelbitch who lost the game, but i'll take it just the same!

we're only 1 game behind them in the loss column. 3 behind the blow jays there...
