"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Your Dreams Were Your Ticket Out

jimmy-smith

While most of Cleveland will be paying attention to Game 6 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals tonight, CC Sabathia returns home to face the Tribe. I’d love to see Lebron James and the Cavs force a Game 7 but the smart money has the Magic winning this one going away. Still, one can always dream, right?

In the meantime, Sabathia has been pitching well of late. Let’s hope he throws another good game and gets plenty of support from the Bronx Lumber Company.

C’mon boys, make it a Saturday Night to savor.

i LOVE this album cover!!! i've got another half-dozen Jimmy Smith Blue Note cd's en route to me right now. i'll have about 25+ of his cd's.

Jimmy's "home cookin'", is around Philly, but this album cover was shot in front of Kate's Home Cookin' on New York's 126th Street.

this is a rare appearance for tenor sax player Percy France. he also plays on another record by a great Blue Note organist - Freddie Roach. Roach, grew up in the Bronx, White Plains and Newark. he recorded 5 solo records for BN, and was a regular sideguy with Ike Quebec and guested on an excellent Donald Byrd record from that era.

Blue Note had the best aesthetics, when it came to album covers. it's simply the BEST label ever!!!

Made me remember this fine platter from Verve (although I agree the Blue Note covers are tops in general):

If there is a Game Seven, I fear the only folks at the Yankee game other than the players will be those covering the game.

: )

The A's picked up up Holliday, Giambi and Garciapara this winter, but are dead last (30th) in OPS in MLB. My boy Jason seems done with a line of: .211 .351 .349 .700 , but ya gotta admire an OBP .140 pts higher then his BA. Leads the A's in RS.

Holliday is bringing his luggage to games these days. Just waiting for Beane to say 'Uncle'. The Banter needs to decide what we're willing to go ($$/yrs) for Holliday. Garciapara for BUIF anyone?

5 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 30, 2009 6:55 pm

Jimmy Smith!! [0] As usual, thelarmis has it covered!

6 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 6:58 pm

[4] i feel bad for Jason. he looks cooked. i always liked him.

don't want either holliday or nomah. pass on both.

[5] aw yeah, buddy! : )

7 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 7:00 pm

[5] i'm gonna go opposite end of the spectrum - in just a little bit i'm headed to see one of the greatest Thrash/Speed Metal bands of all time: TestAmenT. i can't even begin to tell you how psyched i am to see them tonight!!! hell, i even made sure i kept the date open, so i didn't book a gig!!!

8 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 7:01 pm

[4] Holliday can keep his luggage with him in my opinion, OYF. I mean, he's simply got to do better than he's doing in a walk year for me to cut him a check from the Yankees vaults...

In my best Tina Turner, "We don't need another Swisher!"

: )

9 OldYanksFan   ~  May 30, 2009 7:18 pm

Carmona w/24 pitches that inning.

10 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 30, 2009 7:20 pm

[7] enjoy, man! Just read that Cannibal Corpse is playing a gig here in town..i'm not a death metal fan but your recommendations have made me give it a re-think..I can appreciate the musicality of the genre, but the vocals get a bit tedious..

Let's Go C-C!!

11 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 30, 2009 7:21 pm

oh, if Weeping is around..can't believe I flubbed the Jarmusch film title in the Cleveland thread, thanks for catching that. Early Jarmusch is awesome..

12 OldYanksFan   ~  May 30, 2009 7:31 pm

Well... Martinez is out of the lineup for today.

13 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 7:31 pm

[10] i HATE death metal, man. i can't stomach the vocals either. i like more of the high-pitched air-raid siren! some gruff - like Testament - is fine, but i can't deal with straight-up "death" vocals.

i couldn't stomach Cannibal Corpse, either. it's funny, i recorded a coupla albums for a pretty well-known worldwide death metal band and when i cut my drum trax, i had the engineer mute ALL the vocals, 'coz i couldn't handle listening to them! : )

14 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 7:31 pm

Looks like Martinez won't be playing any more tonight.

15 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 7:32 pm

Wow! That's a gigantic thing if Martinez can't go for the Indians...

16 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 7:32 pm

what happened to Victor?

17 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 7:33 pm

got the news from Pete Abe. ah, that's why gamecast was "frozen"...

18 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 7:34 pm

He fouled a pitch off of the inside of his left knee.

Think Jermaine Dye in the playoffs off of Pettitte...

19 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 7:34 pm

Hip hip Jorge!

20 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 7:35 pm

ouch. that was brutal for Dye when he was on the A's. i remember when he came up, here in Atlanta. then with the Royals. now, he's a World Series MVP and has quietly amassed over 300 homeruns. good for him!

21 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 7:36 pm

a wella-wella-wella-wella-wel-come back!!!

Posada!!!

22 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 7:38 pm

Woohoo Nick!

23 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 7:39 pm

nice goin', nick!!!

24 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 7:48 pm

I think we gots tha "Good CC" tonight!

: )

25 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 7:48 pm

great job, C2 !!!

26 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 7:49 pm

I'm reminded of the "comfort zone" Tex and Alex enjoyed in Arlington with CC on the mound in Cleveland...

27 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 7:53 pm

did Tex just miss it?!

28 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 7:56 pm

Alex is Mr. OBP!!!

29 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 7:56 pm

No, the CF did not reach the track...

30 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 8:07 pm

Dang, Matsui barely beat that out.

31 cult of basebaal   ~  May 30, 2009 8:08 pm

wow.

watching matsui run makes *my* knees hurt.

32 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 8:08 pm

That durble was smoked by Mats!

33 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 8:15 pm

More seeing eye singleness!

34 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 8:16 pm

Woohoo Jeets and Damon!

LOL @ playing "Help!" during that mound visit for the home team!

35 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 30, 2009 8:18 pm

wait..what is Kay talking about? Jeter got caught between the bags..how was that great baserunning??

36 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 8:21 pm

I guess A-Rod's allowed to make the last out at third this time.

37 cult of basebaal   ~  May 30, 2009 8:21 pm

well, i guess it's okay to run yourself into 2 outs in an inning, when you also score 5 runs in said inning ...

38 thelarmis   ~  May 30, 2009 8:23 pm

[34] i just listened to Help (and A Hard Day's Night) the other day!

well, my earplugs and i are on the way to the big Metal concert.

enjoy the rest of the game everyone! : )

it's going great thus far!!!

39 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 8:24 pm

Great work guys! Wow @ a five-spot!

Well I for one can certainly appreciate discussions about "the game slowing down and speeding up." That's often referred to as "playing in The Zone," when everything slows down and you can virtually experience perfection, such that everything you have practiced seems to flawlessly flow practically mindlessly and effortlessly. Sometimes it slows down so much, that playing is almost an "out of body experience." Too bad we can't control those times at this pernt yet. It sure is amazing when it happens, though.

I don't think I would be asking Flash about that, however...

heh heh

: )

40 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 8:32 pm

[38] Have a great evening Thelarmis!

41 seamus   ~  May 30, 2009 8:34 pm

[38] for real - have fun man!

42 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 8:37 pm

It's "Alfred Hitchcock Night" @ Progressive Field!

: )

43 seamus   ~  May 30, 2009 8:44 pm

[42] yeah that was a good line

44 RIYank   ~  May 30, 2009 9:02 pm

So, where is everybody? In banterville, I mean.

45 cult of basebaal   ~  May 30, 2009 9:04 pm

VERY nice ab from the Cap'n there.

46 cult of basebaal   ~  May 30, 2009 9:05 pm

Mommy trees make baby trees shake their leaves in terror with the mention of Johnny Damon and his bat breaking ways ...

47 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 30, 2009 9:06 pm

[44] workin hard here http://tinyurl.com/lp3lyd

48 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 9:07 pm

[43] Heh heh thanks, Seamus.

[44] Dunno RIY...

Still at the park skating perhaps?

I think Cliff and Becky are probably sleeping...

: )

49 RIYank   ~  May 30, 2009 9:08 pm

[48] Oh, yeah, sure they are. They won't be sleeping at the same time for a month or two at least!

50 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 9:10 pm

[44] I'm puttering around the house tonight.

51 51cq24   ~  May 30, 2009 9:11 pm

i watched centerstage for the 2nd time ever today to see paul simon. the first was larry david. i was surprised both times by how normal and likable each is. kay isn't a terrible interviewer. i've been thinking recently that if his voice weren't so annoying i'd really be fine with him.

52 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 9:15 pm
53 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 9:21 pm

[52] LOL, thanks. You know, you try and get a serving girl, and they come up with this weird thing called "kidnapping". Well she was too old to be a kid, and I wasn't going to let her take naps.

54 cult of basebaal   ~  May 30, 2009 9:27 pm

ENOUGH. somebody put Matsui on the damn DL already.

awful.

55 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 30, 2009 9:27 pm

Wow..I love my man Matsui but seriously, his knees...he can still swing it but how much longer can he play? Would hate to see him retire, he's always been clutch..

56 51cq24   ~  May 30, 2009 9:28 pm

put him on the dl and give him a leg transplant?

57 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 9:30 pm

[53] "Puttering around the house" is yet another one of those phrases that obviously "scarred me for life!" I can't think of anything but that song whever I hear/read that one.

Now I'll have it clanging around in my dome for a few days...

(NTTAWWT)

And there is another "quality start on the road" for CC!

: )

58 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 9:31 pm

[54] [55] [56] Get him a maid! I mean, everybody ought to have one!

59 RIYank   ~  May 30, 2009 9:33 pm

That really was a tremendous throw. Casual, not a rushed play, but not a lot of guys can do that.

60 51cq24   ~  May 30, 2009 9:35 pm

[57] it makes me think "il fait du bricolage"

61 51cq24   ~  May 30, 2009 9:35 pm

i would appreciate it if my latest fantasy acquisition would not pitch to the scoreboard

62 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 30, 2009 9:38 pm

Magic up by 15..countdown to LeBron to the Knicks??

63 51cq24   ~  May 30, 2009 9:39 pm

...or walk jamey carroll

64 RIYank   ~  May 30, 2009 9:39 pm

This is not as much fun as I was expecting the late innings to be.

65 RIYank   ~  May 30, 2009 9:41 pm

Got Cabrera's number today.
That should be his last batter.

66 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 9:42 pm

[64] Woohoo @ the "free plunk" on Garko!

: )

67 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 30, 2009 9:42 pm

solid 7 for CC, 1.5 games up in the standings?

Cubs-Dodgers on tv up next..

anyone see Ichiro's golf-swing single the other night? Truly Mr. Magic with the bat!

68 RIYank   ~  May 30, 2009 9:44 pm

[67] No, missed that.
I did enjoy the Red Sox game today -- I only got to listen to it, but there's nothing quite like Joe Costiglione calling a losing Sox game.

69 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 30, 2009 9:47 pm

[68] check the highlights, also an amazing over-the-fence catch by Rivera for the Angels to take away a homer.

don't know Costiglione, but can always get up for a Sox loss.

70 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 9:48 pm

[67] Not today, but I've seen him single off of balls in the dirt before!

71 Mattpat11   ~  May 30, 2009 9:48 pm

Hey all.

Anyone want to put down odds that Mo somehow gets in this game?

72 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 9:56 pm

[71] I hope not. 100-1 against.

And those bugs better not be midges.

73 cult of basebaal   ~  May 30, 2009 9:56 pm

nice Play-Rod!

74 Mattpat11   ~  May 30, 2009 10:00 pm

I've decided that the Yankee to finally make an error will be Jose Veras, in the eighth inning of what would be the major league record game. Just because.

75 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 10:02 pm

I like tack on runs. Mo can go watch the rest of the Cavs - Magic game now.

76 OldYanksFan   ~  May 30, 2009 10:02 pm

Cano makes hitting look easy.

77 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 10:03 pm

Tack on time!

78 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 10:05 pm

I really thought Robertson did very well, the ridiculous YES gun notwithstanding. I'm still convinced someone in the truck is just punching in numbers!

79 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 10:05 pm

Ah, Berroa is Matsui's legs.

80 Diane Firstman   ~  May 30, 2009 10:06 pm

I believe Matsui is now officially slower that Tom Nieto ... the slowest runner I've ever seen.

81 Mattpat11   ~  May 30, 2009 10:09 pm

I hope they still have eight or so runs for Pavano

82 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  May 30, 2009 10:11 pm

get the dvd recorder ready MattPat? It's Veras!

83 Mattpat11   ~  May 30, 2009 10:11 pm

I really don't like Jose Veras

84 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 10:12 pm

[74] You're not far off. Still, I guess they can't give Girardi an error for bringing Veras in.

85 Chyll Will   ~  May 30, 2009 10:20 pm

[83 In Vino Veras...

86 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 10:21 pm

[85] Veras is driving me to the old vino.

87 Mattpat11   ~  May 30, 2009 10:22 pm

I want one of you to prove conclusively that Jose Veras is not just a huge joke by Brian Cashman being played on me personally.

88 rbj   ~  May 30, 2009 10:23 pm

Yes, Yankees win, survive a Veras appearance and have yet another errorless game.

Good night all.

89 Chyll Will   ~  May 30, 2009 10:25 pm

Jeter gets a root beer...

90 PJ   ~  May 30, 2009 10:30 pm

Woohoo @ 1.5 game lead in the division!

That's great!

: )

91 Chyll Will   ~  May 30, 2009 10:32 pm

[87] Reports are... inconclusive, especially since William is not here to refute anything you happen to throw out there as fact. Sorry Mattpat, you're probably the victim of a vodun rut...

92 seamus   ~  May 30, 2009 10:40 pm

maybe Matsui finally gets a day off? it has been overdue for some time.

93 thelarmis   ~  May 31, 2009 1:01 am

[40 & 41] thanks guys, it was an awesome concert!!! : )

really great to come home to a nice win, some breathing room in the division and a run differential getting better with each game!

[89] always make it a Barq's - the one with the bite!!!
