At Close Range

mark

Over at Baseball Think Factory, I caught an interesting little piece by Marc Craig regarding Keith Hernandez’s take on Mark Teixeira’s fielding. Dig it.

Wow, that's amazing. I'm a little wary, because I know defensive stats, including UZR, are really only reliable over a very large sample, but I do think this shows that we can't judge a fielder's range very well by watching him play. (I'm sure every Banterer would have guessed that Teixeira was saving the Yankees a bunch of runs.)

[0] "But in his first season as a Yankee, Teixeira's UZR has fallen to a below average -.1.9."

I have a hard time buying any stat that lists Mark Teixeira as a "below average" defensive 1Bman (this year or any other)....

this is what i'll be seeing live in a few hours:

Jeter SS
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Cano 2B
Cabrera RF
Gardner CF
Cervelli C
Chamberlain RHP

Wish i was seeing Jorgie, but w/ Joba on the mound and no DH... No Swish tonight, either...

Veras traded to the Tribe for cash. hopefully Berroa getting gone later...

GO YANKS!!!

I'm definitely not sold on UZR. I think there's a long way to go with that one.

[4] Agreed. For comparison sakes, he's a 110 Rate2, says, BP. Too bad the Fielding Bible +/- isn't updated in-season (is it)? How about David Pinto's PMR?

To me, you can't use just one advanced fielding metric to measure a player's defensive performance, you really need to look at 3 or 4 or even 5. More info helps eliminate more noise and gives a better overall view.

Feh @ Keith Hernandez! Arguably, he wasn't even the best 1B in NYC when Mattingly was there, and Don was hurt most of the time! Like Mantle before him, imagine if he was afforded the luxury to play fully healthy for years...

: )

as soon as they get the hitting back on track maybe I'll be inclined to worry about what Keef Hernandez thinks about Teix's range.

But i sorta doubt it.

[1] I'm absolutely not convinced that he's not.
