The Yankees haven't been the same since he played in the Bronx...

Yankees were 14 games out of first place on August 1, 1979. As Pete Abe pointed out, Munson played three innings at first base in his last game. Only had three seasons over 100 rbis and two over 70. He hit 6 homers in 1978 and was on his way to a similar performance in 1979 when he died. I realize he had three big years during the Yankee resurgence, but I failed to see then or now his deification. But I will read the latest books and get back to you.

I also don't know what it means that the Yankees haven't been the same without him. I am a big fan of Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter, and Mo, three similarly home grown players. While I don't know them personally, I just don't see them knocking on the Mgrs. door in the middle of the night to offer suggestions. I'd like to hear Reggie tell more about the Munson years, an unlikely happenstance due to his special advisor role with the team. He could stir it up, again, yes.
