I remember those days, and that burnt building smell. I remember how things used to be. I remember seeing nothing but empty lots near the Intervale Ave station on the 2.
You have no idea how proud I am that the Bronx has bounced back. It may not be where it could or should be, but I remember the way it used to be.
sorry it's off topic - but woke up this morning in osaka and saw the first .5 innings and then didn't know any result until right now. very psyched, hoped jeter's homer was a good sign rather than the only life they had.
but today was the final of the high school tourney here and I was SO psyched to be here for it. but then i found out it was on during the day and i missed the entire thing. i asked everybody why on earth they would put such a popular event on when nobody could wathc, and they said, hmm, never thought of it like that before.
damn. oh well, i'll trade it for the yanks big win.
I remember seeing Gonzalez speak at a public library in Queens about 10 years ago. He was talking about what it was like to be a reporter in NYC. The one catch-phrase that he kept repeating was, 'nothing happens in a vacuum'. He also talked about how he loved being a reporter and had no desire to ever become an manager/editor at The Times - liked the work and had no interest in supervising others. Smoker? I think he said?
He looked like a cross between Joel Cohen and Dana Scofidio (that last reference may require some explaining on your part B).
