no worries alex.

and getting close

2 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 29, 2009 7:37 pm

You bet. Hey, I just read the Verducci piece on Mo. Good stuff. Some really nice quotes in there.

3 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 29, 2009 7:40 pm

Alex, what the hell is that? Are you going through a Blue Period? >;)

4 ms october   ~  Sep 29, 2009 7:43 pm

[2] since i still get si (even though they haven't billed me in i don't know how long) i'm going to wait until i get it - usually comes weds, thurs the latest.
i'm looking forward to reading it.

i caught the tail end of the pre-game ceremonies and watching mo with his family was touching.

"(Is it October yet?)"

Easy, pardner.

6 ms october   ~  Sep 29, 2009 7:48 pm

[5] damn, you aren't ready for october yet hawk?

7 ed   ~  Sep 29, 2009 7:49 pm

Last game for Pete Abe. No matter which team wins the game tonight (by the way, who cares?), we lose.

We'll miss you baby. Good luck, good bye....

8 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:03 pm

That Verducci article is absorbing. (I don't really like hagiography, but this would be my one exception.)
I had no idea that Mo taught Halladay the cutter. Posada: "Every time we have to face him, we go, 'Thanks, Mariano!'"

9 The Hawk   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:04 pm

[6] I'm ready but somewhat anxious. October could be over in three games, god forbid.

10 The Hawk   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:10 pm

Where is this Verducci piece on Mariano?

11 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:15 pm

[10] http://tinyurl.com/yeh3uyu

Or at your local news stand.

12 ms october   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:28 pm

[8] somehow i'd heard that mo taught halladay the cutter before - the po quote is funny

[9] yeah i hear you. i really don't think so, but sterling has something to say about baseball and predictions.

13 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:30 pm

I think the article is good, not great. Some nifty quotes in there though.

Will, that's my man Richard Diebenkorn, a California painter. I thought the blue, the Royals, and just went with it.

LOL

14 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:35 pm

That is one sweet cover shot of Mariano.

15 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:36 pm

Hey, thelarmis mentioned this the other day I think but..what ever happened to Tennesee PJ, sumo fan and golf master?? Was he banned at some point??

16 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:38 pm

I am unable to watch this game or the Tigers/Twins. My mlb.com feed cuts out after a few seconds. I can reload it, but it just cuts out again. I suspect this is a problem at my end, maybe with my ISP. But is anyone else having a problem?

17 ms october   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:44 pm

[15] i don't know - thelarmis and i have been wondering (a little worried) about him for a couple of months now

in and out of this game, but it is nice to see that aj seems to mostly be in a groove

18 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:47 pm

Might be time to pull the regulars

19 Just Fair   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:49 pm

Like I was just thinking, we need a pinstriped homer to fire up the troops.

20 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:51 pm

[19] Tying the game, and the AL HR lead.

21 vockins   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:52 pm

Actually, I think this is one of the easiest years to pick the MVP and Cy Young, John.

22 ms october   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:53 pm

[21] definitely. i don't know about flash sometimes

23 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:54 pm

[13] Heh-heh, what's it called? "Da Ship Be Sinkin'"? >;)

24 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:54 pm

No action in the bullpen. I'm surprised. AJ has thrown 97 pitches.

25 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:55 pm

Verlander at 100 pitches through six

26 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:57 pm

[25] Now that's what I like to hear. Let's all send our thoughts to Leyland:
"NO REASON HE CAN"T THROW 200 PITCHES. CY YOUNG DID IT. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT GAME OF THE YEAR."

27 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 29, 2009 8:57 pm

[22] Has anyone else used the word dull in terms of Flash? Maybe even occasionally terse...

28 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:00 pm

Hopefulyl Verlander throws 120 pitches today and 120 more on Sunday.

29 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:00 pm

OK .... I missed the pre-game stuff. .... they bestowed all sorts of stuff to Derek ... why?

30 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:01 pm

[27] His voice is extremely dry and sleep-inducing..
[17] Yeah, hope the guy is allright..maybe the Banter powers can chk via email with him..

31 ms october   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:04 pm

[27] dull captures the lad quite well

[29] the honored several individual achievements before the game - melky's cycle, mo's 500th save, derek's franchise hit record - they each got various gifts

32 ms october   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:05 pm

[30] yeah i hope he is okay too

we are probably stuck with flash since coney participated in the ceremonies

33 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:06 pm

There's something to file away for future use. Coke can't field a bunt.

34 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:07 pm

Oh, Cokey.

35 ms october   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:08 pm

[33] or make the throw off a comebacker

36 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:08 pm

We've seen this act before on comebackers ...

37 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:08 pm

[33] Or throw to second.

38 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:08 pm

I'll bet AJ is just thrilled right now.

39 Just Fair   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:09 pm

Is that a Yankee specialty or is it just me? Lame.

40 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:10 pm

[35] [37] That was just an error. Shit happens and shit. He looked very awkward trying to field the bunt though, which could (probably won't) come up again later.

41 Just Fair   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:11 pm

Hey Coke. booooooo

42 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:11 pm

Okay, he's really not very good at this, is he?

43 ms october   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:11 pm

not cokey's finest hour

44 randym77   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:12 pm

Coke is in no danger of winning a GG.

45 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:13 pm

It amazes me that a team in a pennant race is fielding a lineup with Matt Tolbert, Nick Punto and Carlos Gomez.

46 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:14 pm

[44] (et al)

Ways in which Phil Coke is Not Like Mariano Rivera

#37 Does not field well.

47 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:15 pm

[46]

Jim Kaat (he of the 16 or so GGs) is probably sighing somewhere in the MLB studios.

48 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:16 pm

Wow...3-run HR for Diaz and the Braves tie the Marlins at 4.

49 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:23 pm

Dusty Hughes, if you willlllll.

50 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:25 pm

[45] They play the game the right way.

51 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:29 pm

KC has their Hughes pitch the seventh inning! No wonder those fools are so bad.

52 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:30 pm

How I love our pinch stand theres.

53 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:31 pm

Mauer up, two on one out as the tying run

54 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:31 pm

Mauer up with two on.

55 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:32 pm

... and now a WP advances the two into scoring position.

56 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:32 pm

Dusty/Phil Hughes .... The Hughes Corporation ... which one will Rock The Boat (yes, I know it was "The Hues Corporation) :-)

57 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:33 pm

5-4

58 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:34 pm

I've switched over to the Twins game ...

59 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:35 pm

[58] Joe Mauer..that guy right there, he's a baseball player..(Who was the football annoucner that always said that? Had to be Madden, right? or do they all say that..)

60 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:36 pm

5-4 bottom 8th ..... Cuddyer grounded out to end threat.

61 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:39 pm

The blackhole that is the Twins bottom third up in the ninth.

62 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:39 pm

6-4

63 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:42 pm

Well, maybe Verlander will have to throw 130 pitches or something. Moral victory.

64 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:42 pm

[63] He's at 129

65 Just Fair   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:43 pm

Welcome back, Dave. Stay healthy. Granderson is fun. I enjoy wondering how he'd fit in pinstripes.

66 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:43 pm

[64] Oh, cool. How about 145, then?

67 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:44 pm

So, anyone beat out Teix for GG at 1B in AL this year?

68 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:45 pm

Dear Mr. Flaherty, its not all about the WINS!!!!!

69 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:45 pm

Do you think Meineke Mufflers would like Zack Greinke to do ads for them? He could do a thing about why their names don't rhyme.

70 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:47 pm

Beat the Greinke Hankie ... ?

71 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:47 pm

No Verlander in the ninth! Damn.

72 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:48 pm

When I see a closer like Fernando Rodney, it makes me so grateful that Mo signed that special deal with God, allowing him to live and pitch forever. Whew!

73 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:50 pm

[72] Remember the vocal minority that said we should have let Mo walk after 2007 because we had Farnsworth?

74 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:51 pm

「69」 Oh, that's excellent...how about David Aardsma with AAMCO?

75 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:52 pm

[73] NO! That was before my Banter-time..no one actually said that, surely!

76 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:52 pm

hey friends!

so...AJ looked good, huh?! i'm glad his pop is okay.

Bruney instilling some confidence. me likey!

77 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:53 pm

I've never seen a team with as many crappy middle infielders as the Minnesota Twins

78 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:53 pm

[73] Yeesh. No. I don't really have memory space for things like that.

[74] (a) Good! We can line up car repair joints galore. And (b) how did you do that cool corner bracket thing???

79 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:55 pm

Granderson butchered a fly ball. 6-5 Detroit

80 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:56 pm

[77] I know. You'd think two would be plenty. But I assume you're including Nicky Punto.

81 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:56 pm

i'm sure it was mentioned earlier in the game thread - i'll catch up soon/later - but Laptop Buttholz gave up FIVE homeruns!!! i know it's not Chase Wright "4 in a row" to the arch rival, but still, that's *crazy*!!!

82 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:57 pm

Tigers win

83 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:58 pm

Ah, well.
With any luck, the Twins can still force another high-pressure Verlander start, at least.

84 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:58 pm

[80] but...but...but, punto's a piranha!!! ; )

85 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:59 pm

hopefully minny will take the next two...

Go Braves!!!

Go Brewers!!!

86 RIYank   ~  Sep 29, 2009 9:59 pm

[81] I wasn't following. That's awesome!
The general feeling here in RSN recently has been something like, "Yeah, okay, the Yankees win the Division, but it doesn't really matter and we have teh awesomest pitching!"
I'm hoping to enjoy a little twinge of panic tomorrow.

87 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:00 pm

[80] I'm being generous and not counting Cabrera.

That leaves

Punto
Tolbert
Harris
Casilla

Does one team really need four of this player?

88 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:00 pm

Hughes working on a little 'stache ...

89 ms october   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:02 pm

[88] it's getting more atrocious by the day

90 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:03 pm

[88] Its not flattering

91 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:05 pm

「78」 It's a jazz thing man, krazy kool kats are always a little off-center...(or maybe I just have funky things on this Japanese keyboard)..

If the Twins somehow make it to the playoffs I will hhave to avoid all previews (except the one here), don't think I could take all the glorification of scrappiness that is sure to come..

「81」 FIVE home runs?? wow..

92 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:06 pm

[86] i heard it on the radio on the way home. they've given up 6 longballs tonight, but had a big inning late (of course) and are only down a run. here comes the bottom of the 9th. hopefully they lose!!!

93 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:07 pm

Bruney pitching well frightens me

94 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:10 pm

Yay

95 Just Fair   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:10 pm

Good thinking. I've been wanting to see something like thaf for a long time.

96 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:10 pm

[91] yeah, Laptop Buttholz gave up 5 homers, 4 of which were solo jobs. Lind - who has 3 homers, 1 off Saito - had a 2-run blast.

Lind, Hill, Millar, Bautista

Lind now has 35 on the year. Hill, 36.

1 out in the 9th...

97 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:11 pm

i love leadoff walks by our relievers. love 'em.

98 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:11 pm

Its a Kyle Farnsworth infomercial.

102 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:21 pm

Okay, I never cared about winning the game until Farnsworth came in. Now we must.

103 Just Fair   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:22 pm

I must be a big softie. I really do feel bad for Krazy Kyle. But let's go Cano!

104 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:22 pm

speaking of Minnesota having crappy infielders...apparently they know this: they signed Sano. i was NOT expecting that!

105 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:24 pm

Kay, in this situation, I doubt Cano can have a walkoff hit that isn't a HR

106 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:24 pm

Well, it was good to see that happen to someone else.

107 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:24 pm

Ugly strikes out w/ 2 men on. Sux lose. they still haven't clinched the WC. i know it's a given, but it's nice they haven't yet. meanwhile, they can back in w/ a Texas loss tonight and they're already down 1-0 to the Halos early...

let's go Robbie!!!

108 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:26 pm

Robbie swingin' 3-0. was that about at the warning track?

109 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:27 pm

wait, how'd Hinske get to third?!

110 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:28 pm

How wrteched must it be to be a Royals fan who remembers the Geroge Brett era? Impossible to believe this franchise was once a major rival..

111 Just Fair   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:28 pm

HOLY SHIT!!!!

112 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:28 pm

Okay, that was fucking awesome.

113 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:28 pm

holy cow ...

114 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:29 pm

I feel bad for Kyle too..he's not a bad guy...

115 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:29 pm

haha, GREAT job Kyle!!!

and, Miranda, too, i guess...

116 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:29 pm

Miranda Rights the Yankee Ship, Leaves Royals Blue ...

117 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:30 pm

I am not embarrassed to say that I really wanted to win this game. Watching Miranda throw is hands up in exaltation and then be chased down by his excited teammates adds another great moment to a truly fantastic season.

118 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:30 pm

[114] he's not a good pitcher, either... : )

119 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:30 pm

perhaps this was Krazy Kyle's parting gift to Pete Abe!

120 Just Fair   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:30 pm

Miranda with his #72 is like a svelt Fridge running down the line. : D

121 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:32 pm

[116] VERY clever! i loves it!!!

braves lose. rockies just took the lead. my best friend from childhood lives in denver and just texted me. obviously, we're both native new yorkers and don't give a fuck about these national teams, but they're in our respective adopted cities, so we have to give each other hell. we always do in one way or another!

122 RagingTartabull   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:32 pm

123 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:33 pm

Tyler Clippard got the win over the Muts tonight, in relief...

124 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:37 pm

[15] i was just thinking about PJ a day or two ago! i highly doubt he would get banned. i really hope he's okay. he was kinda new around here, but he really loved this place. i believe he was an older guy, which makes me wonder a little bit more.

i guess the only way to possibly contact him would be - Alex should have his email addy. but that's about it. hopefully he's alright!

125 seamus   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:38 pm

wow, i came home just in time to watch the walk off!!!! That was pretty cool. even though the games mean nothing i really wanted it. Nice to see Miranda get it and the whole bench cued up like they knew it was coming.

126 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:38 pm

Only 10 Yankee teams have won more than 102 games; only 6 have won more than 103; only 5 have won more than 104 or 105; and only 4 have won more than 106.

127 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:39 pm

i just saw the lowlight of Coke and highlight of Miranda.

AJ looked good. hope Tex gets to 40!

128 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:40 pm

[126] please post that throughout the week, so we can keep track. Thanks! : )

129 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:41 pm

「124」 Yeah, I was thinking about him as well because a GREAT Sumo tournament just ended here on Sunday..he seemed to be quite a knowledgeable fan..

130 thelarmis   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:49 pm

boBBy hit his 15th homer. i really hope he gets to 300. he needs 45. that's 3 good years. i think i can do it...

131 The Hawk   ~  Sep 29, 2009 10:51 pm

I think a man named Francisco Cervelli ought to have a mustache.
