Cole Hamels, not really a fan.

2 Horace Clarke Era   ~  Oct 8, 2009 4:19 pm

Hmm, so much action in this thread ... everyone's resting up?

I'm going to skip back to last night with a couple of (late) comments. It was idiotic to talk about 'making a statement' for Jeter's homer. Batters hit as well as they can, they do not decide to hit at a given moment. What was unexpected, as many have said, was the left field foul pole shot ... I can't remember the last hard pull homer for DJ. He came up hugely, it was a tremendous moment for the team, but it is NOT 'making a statement'. Next they'll say that if only he were shorter and his dad was white he could be scrappy.

I'd give him the game ball, just over CC, because of the tension of that pre-homer situation. (I know a few people here were saying 'I'm not worried.')

I loved Emma's 'the prodigal reliever' about Joba in the game summary. Bravo.

I recall our Alex talking about the other Alex, and how complex and intense watching his at-bats can be. I felt same way last night. The relief/pleasure at the first rbi, then more for the 2nd was amazing.

3 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 8, 2009 4:27 pm

[2] he's not a fan of being pinch hit for, or you're not a fan of his little conniption fit after getting pinch hit for?

4 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 8, 2009 4:28 pm

woops, that was meant for [1]

5 rbj   ~  Oct 8, 2009 4:35 pm

[2] I'm at work. Have to wait to get home to watch.

I am battling a cold, might take tomorrow off. I did take the last two days off but went in today.

6 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 8, 2009 4:35 pm

It was a relief wasn't it? Funny, but I work with some A Rod haters and they are still hating on him today.

Go figure...

7 Just Fair   ~  Oct 8, 2009 4:49 pm

I pity the Rockes fan who is relying on Jose Contreras to hold a lead. Yikes.

8 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 4:53 pm

[6] Still, if I were A-Rod, I'd be able to say with perfect peace and confidence, "Screw those guys." The fans who were down on him because of his post-season badness, I think he might have had a harder time writing them off. Or maybe that's just me.

9 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 8, 2009 5:04 pm

[7] And now playing 3B for the Phillies, Mr. BFOG+ himself, Miggy Mantle!Cairo!

So Manuel went to Blanton (wasn't he the Game 3 starter?) and now to Happ (wouldn't he usually be the Game 4 starter?). Is Pedro starting Game 3, or was this just Blanton's throw day and so hey, why not use him?

Of course, that rather means that the Phillies' bullpen is horrific . . .

10 BuckFoston   ~  Oct 8, 2009 5:16 pm

8 & 6 I'll just say Arod is not my favorite Yankee, actually wanted them to let him go when he opted out, still think $30M/Year until 44 is a ridiculous contract. However I found him to be refreshing this year, he let his play speak for him. He had tons of big hits and I appreciate him as the stud player that he is. Still don't think he's worth all that money but you can't say he's not clutch, that's just crap now (probably was then too). I can still see how people might not like him as a person, but I am really impressed by his skills, enhanced or not.

11 BuckFoston   ~  Oct 8, 2009 5:17 pm

7 Contreras just fine, it is the NL after all ;)

12 Just Fair   ~  Oct 8, 2009 5:19 pm

Miggy almost singlehandedly wiped out the left and center fielder with a long drive to left center. Almost a scary collision.

13 Yankster   ~  Oct 8, 2009 5:21 pm

How come no one is talking about Teixeira's 0-4 with 5 LOB? Did he have some jitters, was he pushing too hard, was it a bad match up or was it just bad luck?

I'd have liked to see him have a reason to be happy on the off day too...

14 BuckFoston   ~  Oct 8, 2009 5:25 pm

13 he's just not a clutch hitter. Only Slugging .368 in his PS career.

15 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 8, 2009 5:32 pm

[13] Because the Yanks won.

If they had lost, Tex's bad day at the plate would have been wall-to-wall coverage today - and A-Rod would have told Tex how sorry he was to see the monkey take up residence on Tex's back, but by God he's a free man now!

16 BuckFoston   ~  Oct 8, 2009 5:37 pm

J Giambi up with bases loaded and 2 out for the Rockies, Philly pitching change.

17 BuckFoston   ~  Oct 8, 2009 5:39 pm

Unfortunately named Philly pitcher K's the shadow of the Giambino.

18 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 8, 2009 6:08 pm

I understand PeteAbe has got to attract Sox fans to him, but are you effing kidding me? PeteAbe knows this won't happen.

"It'll be interesting to see where this will leave Chamberlain come 2010. The pitcher Red Sox fans love to hate may be no better than a set-up man after all."

19 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 6:20 pm

[18] that's really crappy.

i was teaching, but didn't hamels get lifted 'coz he rushed out to be with his supermodel wife who's in labor?

suspense at the end, but the Rox even the series at Uno.

[8] i've actually tasted post-season badness. i hate it. i imagine it's similar to cauliflower...

20 rbj   ~  Oct 8, 2009 6:42 pm

[18] Ugh. Peter's better than that.

I hope all the series go the full five games, excepting Yankees - Twins, which should only go to 3.

21 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 6:46 pm

[20] apparently not. i give him credit for starting his blog, but right off the bat, all 3 guys there now are a lot better than Petey ever was. i hope all the guys remain. they need a new picture of the Josh guy though - looks like a mug shot!

22 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 6:51 pm

[2] "It was idiotic to talk about ‘making a statement’ for Jeter’s homer."
WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU HOSS?
DON'T YOU KNOW DEREK JETER IS A GOD ?!?!?!?
AND HE CAN BE SCRAPPY IF HE WANT TO BE !!!!!!!!!!

[6] Christians still hold their beliefs on a Jewish holiday

Career/Post Season wOBA
.D.Jeter: .375/.377
..A-Rod: .412/.370
.Posada: .370/.318
....Cano: .349/.275
...Melky: 316/.203
.....Teix: .391/.379
Damon: .351/.348
Matsui: .367/.380
Giambi: .400/.400

Of course, ARod's better PS's came before he was a Yankee.

23 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 6:54 pm

[21] To be fair, Pete set the bar. The guy had 4 or 5 real posts everyday. That's just outrageous for someone on salary. What I will miss is his sense of humor. But Chad has a chance to do a better job.

24 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 6:56 pm

[23] yes, i know - i gave him credit.

25 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 6:58 pm

26 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:02 pm

[25] yup.

27 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:04 pm

[25] I make it a policy to never buy or give web #s to the Post..but that's interesting..I really wonder about Gaudin against the Red Sox though..could be 8 walks by the 5th inning..

28 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:07 pm

[25] Yeah. I'm okay with it.
What about this? (About how Jeter improved his D, via River Avenue Blues.)

29 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:10 pm

OldPoll: Everyone jump in.
Who would you rather see WIN: Red Sox or Angels?

30 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:12 pm

[29] According to Rob Neyer, the 1000-game simulator has the Sox winning 583 games..they are clearly "the better and more talented team"...so of course, we want the Angels..that bullpen cannot shut down our lineup, but the hydra-monster of JobaPhilMo will slay them...

31 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:12 pm

[29] Angels.
Am I supposed to give a reason, or just the answer?

32 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:12 pm

[29] And why?
I prefer to face the Angels. A more rounded team but less pitching and not as explosive. But primarily because the worst outcome of the PS is to be beat by the Sox. I Think we beat them, but the alternative is too scary for one who lives in RSN.

33 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:13 pm

[30-31] Man... yuz guys are fast!

34 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:15 pm

i think Joba or Ace would be ready to go long in Game 4. i hope Game 3 is easy on the 'pen...

[28] yeah, i think it was the RAB that i had recently read. this had more quotes and pictures. l LOVE Derek Jeter. i really really love him. (sorry monkeypants desert!)

Ethier is really good at 'teh' baseball.

knotted at 1

35 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:15 pm

The only thing I might more then the Yankees winning...
would be to shave Manny's head.

36 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:16 pm

Halos.

37 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:16 pm

Okay, actually, my reasons are the combination of your [30] [32] reasons. For me, the worst case is made worse by the fact that I live in RSN. Whereas early elimination of the Sox, while not quite as good as their defeat at the hands of the Bombers, is still pretty good.

38 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:17 pm

.. might LOVE more... my typing skills are borken.

39 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:17 pm

i guess hitless (wo)manny is on the rag.

40 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:19 pm

[38] i was loving that "borken" shit last night when i read thru the comments! funny shit, guys!!!

i gotsta go practice. catch up whichya later...

GO CALIFORNIA TEAM PLAYING THE SHIT SOX!!!

41 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:19 pm

See, whereas, I really want Manny to do well in this series. Because he's not high on my personal hate list, and it drives RSN absolutely crazy.

42 Horace Clarke Era   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:48 pm

OYF got a laugh here with the ALL CAPS Jeter-god reply to me.

And [28] may finally answer what I've been asking 3-4 times now ... is there a reason for Jeter's improved range? I'd heard somewhere it was playing deeper and better positioning ... but this turns it on really hard work to build muscles and quickness going left. Not to get back to the Jeter/god thing, but there's a lot of pride involved in a 35 year old digging that deep ... and a lot of reward involved when you see it work. (And yes, quite sure lesser-known players do it too.)

Philly may be in a bit of trouble heading to the mountains. Though they could also hit 6 homers a game.

43 rbj   ~  Oct 8, 2009 7:48 pm

[29] Gee, that's a tough one. Angels always kill the Yankees in the PS, plus I think Soscia is a good manager. And I'm not sure the Yankees will do well going cross country. Beating Boston would be satisfying, plus Manny's gone.

I want each one of those games to go at least 12 innings.

44 The Hawk   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:16 pm

Anyone watching the Dodgers/Cards game? I thought it odd that Torre didn't PH for Kershaw in the bottom of the sixth. He's, what, 21 - 22 years old already over 90 pitches, and has danced through his share of raindrops over the course of those six innings. Then my reaction was rewarded as he promptly gave up the lead.

45 The Hawk   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:17 pm

If the Angels beat the Red Sox then the Yankees will beat the Angels, because it will be Bizarro World Baseball.

46 The Hawk   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:20 pm

This ump is pretty forgiving of Wainright's curve outside to righties.

47 The Hawk   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:23 pm

Since I'm on a roll, I'll say that that crack about Joba by Peter Abraham was lame. They'll all be crying their eyes out when this "mere" setup man helps to smother their hitters in the later innings, should the teams meet in the ALCS.

48 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:25 pm

Albert Pujols, what a choker. How much are they paying him?

49 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:34 pm

「47」 he has to play to the new audience. All those "Yoooouuuk rocks, I luv Dusty 4-evahh..." commenters.

Unlike the staid, respectable and always sophisticated posts on the Banter..

50 ms october   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:36 pm

[49] not only are you using fancy brackets, but fancy numbers too!!

51 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:37 pm

OldPoll #2:
Which NL team would you LEAST like to face in the WS?
And RIYank wants to know why?

Me.. The Cards 1 & 2 is not only very good, but our guys have probably seen very little, if any, of them. Beckett and Lester (for example) are excellent, but at least we have seen plenty of them. Keeping in mind how we do against USRPs, Carpenter and Wainright? Could shut us down.

52 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:38 pm

「50」 It's a sunny friday after the typhoon, want to get a bit crazy! Amped up for some rally monkey desert.

53 Just Fair   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:41 pm

I'd love to see the Yanks beat the Red Sox again, but frankly the 14-12, 4 1/2 hour games in that old pinball machine are too goddamn draining. But I HATE the fucking Angels. Decisions decisions. Kinda putting the Score Cart before the horse though. : D
Bases juiced for the Torre's.

54 The Hawk   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:45 pm

TBS is one of those stations where the commercials are WAYYYYY louder than the show you're watching.

55 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:45 pm

[51] Yep, I find the Cards scarier. Maybe it's only because their marquee players are so damn good.

They must be pulling their hair out over at Dodger Thoughts, huh? I popped in to say "hello" earlier. It's a very different vibe over there.

56 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:48 pm

「55」 Do they all log off early? (ok, that's a pretty dead-horse joke..)

Matsui's tater yesterday was awesome, the nightly news guys here all went mental with each replay..let's hope it's the first of many home runs this post-season..

57 The Hawk   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:49 pm

I really hope the Yanks make it to the Series. Besides the Rockies, I like all these NL teams for opponents. Dodgers would be tough, though, but still fun.

58 The Hawk   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:50 pm

[56] It's really too bad they gotta get rid of Matsui.

59 Just Fair   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:52 pm

Will Manny wield his magic in the 9th?

60 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:53 pm

[56] In the CC post game interview a Japanese reporter asks the big guy about Matsui's homer (I couldn't quite catch the question), and Sabathia smiled and heaped praise on Godzilla. Nice.

61 The Hawk   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:53 pm

[59] I sure hope so!

62 ms october   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:57 pm

[58] for some reason i think they are going to keep matsui and not damon

[52] hmmph - fancy jazzy stuff

63 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:58 pm

「60」 Matsui seemed really smiley in the dugout, more emotion than you usually see from him, very cool. It's funny but I have never once heard him speak English..wonder what it sounds like when he's joking on the bench with the others guys..

64 ms october   ~  Oct 8, 2009 8:59 pm

i hope mp pops in tonight - i ahven't had time today to skim through the comments from last night's game thread, but i hope he managed to work beast commercial in when matsui homered

65 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:00 pm

Reggie is throwing out the first pitch tomorrow!

66 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:00 pm

Of course Manny's going hit it out, right?

67 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:00 pm

[64] He did!

68 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:01 pm

Except that he'll get nothing to hit.

69 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:01 pm

[66] Nope.

70 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:01 pm

Nope.

Not this time.

But you see? No soft ground ball.

71 ms october   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:01 pm

[65] of course he is! i think he has the record for most time to throw out the first pitch

72 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:01 pm

「64」 I read all the game thread at lunch yesterday, he did drop a "beast commercial"!

73 The Hawk   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:02 pm

Ahh, no Manny magic.

Fire Torre.

74 ms october   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:02 pm

75 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:02 pm

[63] It really was beautiful. He looked like a little leaguer!

76 Just Fair   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:02 pm

Looking at Molina, can someone tell me if 2 brothers have ever caught in the same World Series? My gut reaction is no.

77 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:04 pm

Still alive!

Oh, yeah, that Matsui Moment was very heart warming. It was great to see him light up.

78 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:04 pm

Wtf is it with the outfielding these past couple of days?

Jitters, man, jitters.

79 The Hawk   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:04 pm

Hm, Holliday definitely has the makings of a Met.

80 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:04 pm

Of course, it's not just the outfielding, Jorgie and CC engaged in some inexcusable slop, themselves.

81 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:05 pm

Wtf?
Did that guy just drink from a juice box???

82 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:05 pm

84 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:06 pm

85 The Hawk   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:07 pm

[82] He decided now was the time to show the Mets he "has the right stuff" ... Audition passed, Matt!

That was some game.

114 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:24 pm

The Holliday muff...
was a looping linedrive the opposite way.
Holliday comes in at 3/4 speed.
His glove is turned up.
At the last minute, Holliday turns his glove as if to make a basket catch.
The ball goes OVER his glove and basically hits him in the groin.
He never touched the ball... it cleared his glove.
It was an easy catch if he doesn't turn his glove.

115 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:25 pm

Just checking the lineups for Sox-Angels..gotta say, I think Boston is better..but let me go back to read Cliff's preview for some actual stat analysis..

Player B: .249 29/082 .371 .498 .869

Guess who?
(Hint: Player A made $18m last year)

127 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:36 pm

[125] Lester is VERY good, but his command has been off a little of late. They need walks/baserunners and only 5 or 6 from Lester.
OR ELSE!!!!!!!!

128 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:37 pm

「119」 Lester is the Sox new gangsta-ace..much as it pains me to say, Sox 5 Angels 2

129 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:38 pm

Wow... Orsillo, a Red Sox announcer, on the TBS team.

130 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:39 pm

[128] That is the OR ELSE scenerio.

131 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:40 pm

Lester is indeed very good. But, he's going to have a bad day. Hey, it happens.

132 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:40 pm

Lackey with the no-hitter through 1/3...

133 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:40 pm

[129] I know. But, it's a good call. He's way above TBS average.

134 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:46 pm

[133] Agreed. I like Don, and Orsillo and Remy make an excellent team, one of the best. But isn't it unusual for him to be announcing a PS game for his own team? Why not have him do the Dodgers game.

Will he be doing a (possible) Yanks/Sox game?

Actually it would be better if TBS had ONE guy from each team in the booth. They would obviously know the players better then the national guys. As someone suggested, one announcer from each team, and a 3rd national guy would be very cool.

135 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:46 pm

20 pitches already for Lackey...sigh..

137 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:47 pm

[134] No, he can't do an ALCS game because TBS doesn't have the ALCS. (Right?)

138 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 9:47 pm

But anyway, as I said yesterday (I think), I would strongly prefer Remy and Orsillo to Caray and Anybody.

Hey guys! Thanks to RIYank for dropping by Dodger Thoughts earlier. There are still a lot of DT regulars over there (though I know firsthand that many of them were at the game in person today) and some newbies, and a few LA Times trolls ;-) but anyway was good to see you over there.

Quite a game, eh? Matt Holliday giveth (homer) and Holliday taketh away (muffed catch). Dodgers have had some crazy 9th inning magic this year. I feel bad for Wainwright who pitched a terrific game, but I don't feel bad for Tony LaRussa or the Cardinals.

Also, as most people on DT also expressed, including me, I agree that Torre was wrong in not PH-ing for Kershaw an inning earlier. He was pitching ok but they needed all the help on offense they could get at that point, had a runner on, a great bullpen. Was a mistake. But they won anyway.

Meanwhile, go Yanks. My dad and I are rooting for a family rivalry Dodgers Yanks WS but we still have a long way to go on both sides for that to happen.

So, in my Leslie Nielsen voice: I just wanted to tell you both good luck. We're all counting on you.

iirc, Underdog was always cool about us cursing. i don't wanna speak for him, but he may have even said he wishes he could do so at the old DT, or something to that effect. it was that Daniel Zappala (or some name similar) that was a total fucking cockhead scumsucking shitbag and completely threw us under the bus, collectively, as people. that was just flat out wrong.

167 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 10:18 pm

[146] [150] Correctimoony.
Cashman is a genius!
There has been VERY little talk about Cashman this year.
I guess that's because he did such a fine job.
Let Jason and Bobby go.
Got monsters CC, Tex and semi-monster AJ.
Got an undervalued Swisher.
JHJr had been a very nice addition.
Chad Gaudin has been a nice surprise (did he cost us anything?)

Just an outstanding year for the Man of Cash!

176 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 10:23 pm

I'm watching postseason.tv. Someone explained another feature to me, and it works nicely: you can do split screen or four-way split, and choose a different camera for each. It relieves the problem I was having before of not being able to switch quickly enough to watch the strike zone and then the actual play.

177 51cq24   ~  Oct 8, 2009 10:25 pm

what just happened catcher interference?

178 RIYank   ~  Oct 8, 2009 10:25 pm

No cursing allowed over there. They have a lot of rules, actually.

179 underdog   ~  Oct 8, 2009 10:26 pm

Heh. Hopefully you guys won't need to save some of that cursing in reserve for tomorrow's fucking Yankee game. ;-)

Naw, we miss having the Banter and DT connected on the Toaster, and Catfish Stew and the Griddle and so on. Glad a lot of those bloggers are still blogging though.

Hope to drop by tomorrow though I may be working for much of it. But good luck!

As for tonight's game, I hate both the Angels and the Red Sox so this is a tough watch for me. Fuck 'em both. ;-) Cheers.

Bob's color coded system was for players trying to hit for the cycle (and paid "homage" to the terror alert system). CI did just get a single alarm. I think we had quite a few CI alarms in baseball this year. Oh, you can follow him on twitter at http://twitter.com/bobtimmermann and he's Phenomenal Smith on DT.

that's funny about the foreman. you were an engineer too, right? my brother and i were fighting in the kitchen one day, a million years ago. my mom was doing the dishes and we were just cursing each other out something fierce (my brother and me, that is - sorry for the dangling participle, Ma!). all of a sudden, i called him a "douchelord" and we all just stopped. even the water outta the sink was just suspended in mid-air. we all looked at each other and burst out in laughter. "douchelord," is now firmly entrenched in our cursing vocabulary! : )

jesus Vlad. i mean it's amazing that he was able to make contact on that at his shoetop and put it in play, but...WHY fucking swing at that? aaarrrggghhh!!!

238 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:21 pm

「236」 Haha, more falafel today, but "yaki-tori" and beer tonight!

Go Go Torii!!

239 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:23 pm

the way these guys slap hands - i wouldn't be able to hold drumsticks for a week.

another double! Juan Rivera turned out to be a nice player. he's from our farm system, methinks. i remember when he started a playoff game for us in left field...

lester at 85 pitches

240 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:24 pm

[238] i was close!!! only ONE letter off. not bad, eh?!

guinness? i'm w/ my tradtional Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in a Penn State pint glass!

241 boslaw   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:25 pm

What did the Yankees get in return for Juan Rivera (or was he a free agent)? He was a good 4th outfielder and I'm always bummed that he plays for the angels. I'm sure I overrate him, but he just seems better than many everyday outfielders we've had over the past 10 yrs (womack, mondesi) not to mention 4th outfielders.

242 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:29 pm

[241] i don't think you overrate him. i also don't think he was around long enough to be a free agent. i don't remember what the transaction was. wait, didn't he go to Montreal. was he in the Javy Vazquez deal?

243 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:30 pm

OK Jazz - you need to go to nomaas and check out the AJ/Molina picture/post

244 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:32 pm

[241] i think he's more of a 4th outfielder/complementary piece though, than an everyday starting outfielder on a contending team.

245 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:34 pm

lackey's first walk. he's approaching 90 pitches. Ugly up, 2 on, 2 out.

ugly vs. really ugly

246 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:35 pm

[242] Good call.
"Rivera, acquired by Montreal from the New York Yankees in the Nick Johnson trade last December, hit .307 for the Expos with 12 homers and 49 RBIss in his first full major league season."

247 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:36 pm

Lackey about to shit the bed.

248 boslaw   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:36 pm

.287 .332 .478 .810
.274 .336 .416 .752

Rivera on top, Melky on the bottom.

I believe you're right - he went to Montreal so must have been part of the vazquez deal. Played in the 2002 & 2003 postseasons for the Yanks

249 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:36 pm

c'mon bullwinkle! he's afraid to throw anything. somewhat generous call on that strike, but i'll take it. wow, how'd Ugly lay off that one? get 'im right here, lackey!

250 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:37 pm

Youk swings at Ball 4....

251 Just Fair   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:37 pm

I was reading old SI articles about the 98 playoffs to pass the time this week. Juan Rivera was mentioned as the next big upcoming star. He was of course only 18 or 19 at the time.

252 boslaw   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:37 pm

nice play by CHOAD

253 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:37 pm

Very nice play on a tough short hop.

254 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:39 pm

wow, CHOADE!!! nice friggin' play. inning ovah!!!

melky's probably faster, better in the field and definitely cheaper. also, might still have an upside? rivera was a part we were able to part with. i'm glad he turned out to be a pretty good ballplayer, but i don't miss him much, or anything. nice that we raised him though. no one ever brings that up, i guess...

255 Just Fair   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:41 pm

Poor little Shrek. Go eff yourself, Ugly!!

256 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:42 pm

quit yer bitchin' Ugly. god, NO ONE whines more than that motherfucker. ah, then again, bad call. he was indeed out. Youk deserves this kinda treatment. bitchfuk! : )

257 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:42 pm

「243」 Oh man, that's hysterical! You know, if we get just 3 "good AJ" starts in the playoffs..

258 Just Fair   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:42 pm

Rough call. Tough Shit.

259 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:43 pm

what was the bad call??

260 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:43 pm

and another young shortstop wearing #2. i loves it!!! : )

261 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:44 pm

damn, that was some inside heater at almost 100 pitches. i guess his knee really is fine...

262 Just Fair   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:45 pm

[259] Lowell made a high throw to first. Ugly had to jump up for it and came down on the 1st base coach side of the bag, but his foot clearly landed on the big at least a full stride ahead of the runner. Awful umpiring as usual.

263 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:45 pm

[259] another errant throw pulled Ugly up in the air over the bag, he got down waaaay ahead of the runner, but it was ruled safe.

basehit deCHOADE!!!

264 Just Fair   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:46 pm

Damn you Snozzberry!!

265 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:46 pm

crap. prolly didn't have to dive. showoff...

266 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:47 pm

[257] i think tomorrow is a trial run. it's not set in stone that Molina will catch ALL of AJ's games, if he's fortunate enough to have more starts...

267 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:48 pm

Lester gave them 6..can Lackey go 7? That LA pen...

268 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:50 pm

270 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:51 pm

271 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:51 pm

Ya know thelarmis..i am feeling schizo right now rooting for the Angels..

272 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:53 pm

i still haven't seen the Holliday error yet. i'm sure i will soon enough...

273 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:53 pm

oh, he most certainly can go 7 innings!!!

274 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:54 pm

[271] did i tell you about the song title on a recent metal album i picked up?

it's called: "I'm A Schizo (And So Am I)"

i LOVE it!!!

275 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:57 pm

RamRam??

276 thelarmis   ~  Oct 8, 2009 11:57 pm

278 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:00 am

uncanny.

4th free pass for boBBy.

he should...STEAL!!!

279 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:01 am

oh, total bollocks. complete bullshit.

Torii drilled in the ribs with the very first pitch. FUCK YOU, Boston.

double steal !!!!!

oh, nice. serves you right, Ram-Ram!

284 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:03 am

Yep, I think Tito wishes he could have that move back..Good job, RamRam!!

285 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:04 am

beautiful, thanks for playin'!

Saito in. what's his stature in Japan?

286 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:06 am

Wow..Tito goes with Ramirez and now Saito..no Bard or Wagner...veeeeerrrrry interesting...

287 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:08 am

Saito was a great pitcher for years with the Yokohama Baystars, and a sold closer in LA before he got injured

288 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:10 am

It step-on-their-throat time!

289 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:12 am

that was fucking lame! everything was in slow motion. total bollocks.

290 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:12 am

he never tagged him. safe at 3rd. payback's a bitch... (so is ugly!)

291 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:14 am

That had to be the BEST possible scenario there (outside of a triple play) for Boston...damn it..

292 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:14 am

Hey, Team. I'm about to go to bed, but just checking in.

So, who are we rooting for?

293 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:14 am

YEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!

5-0

that's more like it!!!

294 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:16 am

How could Rivera be almost out at 3rd? He was on second and there were 2 out! Lucky there for the Angels. Was that DP a bizarre rally killer or what?

295 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:16 am

[292] halos

huh. ok. so that was an "infield" hit. sure it was. good job.

then, Nancy "gunned" down the runner. um, he was in shallow right field.

who's worse - the announcers or the umpires?! : ~

296 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:16 am

[293] I take it we're rooting against Boston?

I mean, I'd (obviously) never root *for* Boston, but given our postseason history with California...

297 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:17 am

[294] yes, it killed the rally sooo much that 2 runs scored and then there was another hit (infield, of course!), right after it...

298 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:17 am

[290] On the DP, there was a force at 3rd. Lowell didn't need to tag him, just be on the base.

299 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:17 am

[295] How come? I presume the consensus is that they'd be the easier opponent, but is that actually so?

300 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:18 am

[296] "I take it we’re rooting against Boston?"

yeah, i figured we'd try something new! ; )

i, too, wish they were still called the California Angels. i wonder how Brian Downing feels about this?!

wow. Lackey still in. i'm surprised. ok, leadoff hit. take him out...

Its hard to say which is a better team (Halos or Sox) or who will be harder to beat. But it's always nice to see the Sox get eliminated. Also, I think Fenway give the Sox more homefield advantage then does Angels stadium.

302 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:20 am

[298] ah, you're right!

Mayor Krotchman pinch hitting.

[299] i think we'll beat either one, but i can't stomach playing boston in the playoffs. and if (gasp) we lose, it'd be easier to swallow (gulp!) to "california".

why is lackey still in?!?!?! 'coz they have a crappy bullpen, i know, i know...

303 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:20 am

「299」 For my stress levels..cause Boston still a better team than LA..cause of endless "commentary" on tv abotu 2004..endless Evil Empire quotations..ESPN all picking Boston to win..etc etc...

304 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:21 am

[300] :)

Brian Downing. You know, California was my second favorite team for a couple years, there (because of Reggie, of course) and I was absolutely crushed when they lost to Milwaukee that year. I remember listening to game 5 on the radio because I was punished and not allowed to watch on tv. I remember listening to Vin Sculley when Rod Carew came up to make the last out. Sculley said something like "And the Angels down to their last out, here's one of the toughest outs in baseball." Carew ground out to short, as I recall, and that was that. I was so demoralized.

305 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:21 am

Figgy needs to stop drinking before the game.

306 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:22 am

Oh, fuck you, John Lacky.

307 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:22 am

[301] i'll take the first part. always wonderful to see boston lose. i think we play better at their bogus little league field than at the "Big A" (i hate that name). i always wanted Boston to lose. always.

goddman does deCHOADE have an arm on his little body! jeesh!

that's it for Bullwinkle. he did a fine, fine job tonight.

308 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:23 am

[301] Good points.

309 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:24 am

Oh, hey, look, speak of the devil!

310 JeremyM   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:26 am

I wish they could both lose, but under no circumstances can I root for Boston, so I'm going for Anaheim by default.

311 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:28 am

very nice!

[310] exactly.

[304] was that 1982? how could anyone root against the Harvey Wallbangers? my brother and i loved that team. we still do! : )

312 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:29 am

「311」 I was for California, they had Reggie!

313 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:32 am

goddamn. 99mph heat, 84mph nasty hook. 100 mph ball outside. 99mph rising inside gas. down swingin'. from where does he generate this power? (i know he's hittable...)

314 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:35 am

yes, buck, and even though he had a successful sacrifice bunt, he still was NOT on base. schmuck!

315 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:36 am

easy inning for the kid. 3 outs to go. 5-0 lead, i say DON'T bring in Fuentes...

316 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:39 am

[304] It was.

317 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 9, 2009 12:39 am

「313」 Bard has trouble with lefties I think...? But yeah, his stuff is ridiculous..why bring in RamRam instead of him earlier? Odd moves by Tito..

328 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 9, 2009 1:39 am

「327」Great job MLB as usual..WS games in November, anyone?

329 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 2:01 am

[328] well, not sure how avoidable that was. i just hope it doesn't rain in da Bronx manana. i want the game in hand before i go to my gig!

TBS is really not doing a very good job. and the ernie johnson, david wells, eck, ripken crew is incredibly lackluster, esp. late night. you'd think boomer would corral everyone, but he doesn't. and ripken has ZERO personality. oh well, at least i get to see the games and highlights...

i've moved on from baseball to my blue note collection for the night! : )

330 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Oct 9, 2009 2:25 am

[329] Ripken and David Wells..the original Odd Couple!

See you bright and early Sat morning (my side) for Game 2...

331 thelarmis   ~  Oct 9, 2009 2:32 am

[330] yeah, talk about lack of chemistry. it's just not a good crew. i'm sure the MLB network is killin' it. but part of me is glad i don't have it - otherwise i'd really get nothing done...

i'm listening to Sal Salvador. he was the guitarist in the Stan Kenton Big Band. he did some solo sides for Blue Note in 1953 & 1954. like you, i don't know a ton about this era, nor do i like it as much as the "classic" hard bop era of the mid-50's to the late 60's. but i've been picking up a bunch of these early sides for my "collection". the sound quality isn't great (not that i care that much) and the stylings (to borrow a Horace Silver term!) of the playing is not of the techniques i love, but all of it is excellent, swinging music and there is some really nice playing all around on this record. i'm even treated to 4 tracks with the incredible Joe Morello on drums - from Dave Brubeck ( sorry Hoppystone!!!)

332 Boatzilla   ~  Oct 9, 2009 9:12 am

Sorry to be off topic, but Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. Wow. Talk about a global endorsement. Now all we need is for A-God to be the WS MVP, with a 9th inning sayonara HR, and things will start to get better all over...child.....
