Can we give Jeter a bit more rest next year?

Ramiro Pena vs RHP: .333 .362 .456 .818
Derek Jeter vs RHP: .311 .381 .435 .816

And then, you can consider defense.
Just sayin...

2 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 15, 2009 7:06 pm

I'm not that familiar with either the Phily or Dodger teams, but if Philadelphia's top 3 SPs are LH'ed, do I assume we match up better with the Dodgers? Gotta know who I should roor for this series.

3 Cliff Corcoran   ~  Oct 15, 2009 7:18 pm

[1] Because Jeter wore down so much this year? Major small sample alert on Ramiro there.

[2] The Yankees hit lefties better than righties this year. Think about it: Jeter, Alex, four switch-hitters (Tex, Swish, Posada, Melky). That leaves Damon, Cano, and Matsui, and Hideki had a big year against lefties. The Yankees are really match-up proof this year. Don't worry about handedness, worry about the quality of the teams. The Phillies can rake, that scares me. Then again, the Dodgers have a great pen, and the Yanks have been comeback kids all year, so that could be negated against L.A.

4 Just Fair   ~  Oct 15, 2009 7:39 pm

All I know is that in every Andre Ethier highlight I see he looks like the second coming of Barry Bonds. Highlighs can do that. : )

[3] thank you on the sss for pena and the craziness of resting jeter for pena.
for someone who has supposedly come to appreciate jeter more i still wonder sometimes oyf.

i think the yanks have a starting pitching advantage with either team which makes me feel okay with either one - and i don't think either team has such a dominant starter (and no cliff lee up against an al lineup doesn't count) that they could really shut down the yanks.

[4] he is a solid hitter. 272/361/508 with the power developing this year (31 hrs). i'd like the yanks to go after him when he becomes a fa. but he ain't no barry bonds :}

i was actually just up near ys - it is dreary as hell there with the tarp on the filed and the cold rain coming down.

6 a.O   ~  Oct 15, 2009 8:20 pm

[5] Certainly too small of a sample size, but I would like to see Pena make the roster out of Spring Training next year and get a little more time playing behind both Jeter and Cano. I feel like both of those guys could use more rest than they get, whether Jeter will admit it or not. Possibly the same goes for Rodriguez, though I understand you might want a 3B sub with a bit more power for days off.

7 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 15, 2009 8:22 pm

[3] I ain't knocking Derek. Jetes was GREAT this year, no question about it. But next year he is still a 36 yr old, 6'-3" SS, with a lot of milage.

1) I'm sure he can play 155 games at SS, but are you sure he won't be more effective if he gets an extra dozen or so days not in the field?
2) Pena was called the best defender in the Yankee organization. If he can come within .050 OPS pts of Jeter (vs RHP), considering his D, it's close to a wash. Also, getting Pena some more ABs might improve his game and development.
3) I don't know if we will have Mats or a full time DH. Depending on our team, Jetes could DH some of the games Pena starts.

I don't knw if Pena has a future with the Yankees as anything other then a utility guy. I don't know if an extra dozen days off for Jete's helps him in his year 37, 38 and 39. We have never had a BU-SS that could come with .150 OPS pts of Jeter, so in the past, resting him resulted in a black hole. If Pena can post a .770 OPS (against RHP), it may be a reasonable idea to get him more ABs and Jeter a little rest time.

If it's the Dodgers vs the Yankees in the WS, the media hype is going to be insane.

10 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:05 pm

Not much Bantering for this here Little League game.

11 ms october   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:07 pm

[10] have you decided who you want to win yet?

i kind of stopped paying attention after the talking head trio all but said it is perfectly fine for the catcher to be an automatic out

12 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:25 pm

[11] Don't know. My gut tells me that Phily is a better team, but I like our offense against their pitching. I have never liked playing the Sox, because losing to them generated so much talk. If we play LA, the Torre Talk will be overwhelming, and should we lose to LA, it will be a constant theme the whole off-season.

13 randym77   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:36 pm

If Torre beats us in the WS...do heads roll? And if so, whose?

14 Dimelo   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:37 pm

[7] Don't you think it's a good idea to wait till the playoffs are over, it is brick cold and it's the middle of January before anyone starts "worrying" about platooning Jeter?

15 randym77   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:51 pm

Okay, I can't resist. What was Torre thinking, leaving him in that long?

16 Raf   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:51 pm

At the very least, shouldn't Pena replace Hairston?

17 Dimelo   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:54 pm

[15] That it is game one.

18 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:57 pm

[15] i agree. i knew howard would haunt him. kershaw was obviously finished...

19 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:58 pm

who needs starting pitching when you have a great bullpen?!

20 Rich   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:59 pm

The best thing about Pena's "emergence" is that we can probably forget that Cody Ransom can do anything but jump really, really, really high.

21 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 15, 2009 9:59 pm

[15] The kid's his ace, and Utley and (especially) Howard are usually susceptible to LHP.

I think this series is going to go badly for the Dodgers, presuming Philly holds on here (no sure thing with Lidge looming in the late innings). I haven't been paying much attention to them, but somehow letting Vincente Padilla start over Chad Billingsly, seemingly on the basis of a handful of starts - or his one excellent NLDS start - smacks of Torre's tired old veteran fetish and overweighing small samples. Maybe Billingsly didn't pitch well down the stretch - maybe Padilla did - but one is a 24-year-old who's been outstanding in his 4 years in the bigs, and the other is Vincente Padilla. Gotta label that one as a FAIL.

[16] Absolutely yes.

[9] And that is the only reason I don't want to see a Yanks-Dodgers Serious. Like Cliff said in [3], the Yanks match up pretty well with anybody.

22 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:00 pm

[5] was actually just up near ys – it is dreary as hell there with the tarp on the filed and the cold rain coming down.

you a looooong ways from 'Bama, girl !!! ; )

here's Barry Bonds! ; )

23 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:02 pm

FISTED!!!!

24 Rich   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:03 pm

[19] That reminds me. The CW is TINSTAAPP (there is no such thing as a pitching prospect)? With the Yankees, it's that there is no such thing as a starting pitching prospect because they all become relievers.

25 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:04 pm

if manny had a 'B' on his grimy helmet, it'd be 5-4 here...

26 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:05 pm

i guess it doesn't really matter what letter are on his helmet! : o

did manny cut his dreads?!

30 Dimelo   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:07 pm

Why is there so much "FISTING" going on in this game?

31 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:07 pm

lots and lotsa fisting out there in porn cuntry. (sp.?!)

32 randym77   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:07 pm

[26] No. They're longer than ever. Though he has them tied back fairly neatly.

33 Rich   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:08 pm

[29] Postseason HRs need to be distinguished from WS HRs.

34 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:15 pm

as far as who we play...IF we make it that far...

oh, and i do think we will. i think the yanks beat the halos in 6.

sure, the Torre drama/media hype will be insufferable, but i think we beat LA handily. traveling out west for a 2nd straight series isn't great, but the weather would be better. dodger stadium will help our pitching and i'm not so sure it'll diminish our powerful lineup.

phillies are close to home, are more dangerous (offensively) and play in a hitters park.

i don't know that it matters too very much. i think we can beat either team. might be easier to beat the Dodgers though, in the long run. i've always HATED the Dodgers and through my Penn State ties, have quite a few Phillie phanatic phriends.

at this point, i just don't care. i'm just glad there's a freaking baseball game on! my only concern - baseball wise - is those pesky Halos. i REALLY wanna win it all this year. it would mean everything to me...

35 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:16 pm

[33] Mantle still have that 'record'? or, is it Bernie, possibly?!

[32] yeah, i noticed they were pulled back. they still looked a little shorter. oh well, whatever...

36 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:17 pm

casey blake looks like he should be on some kinda home improvement type show.

37 Raf   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:17 pm

[26] I think he has them tucked under his cap/helmet

38 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:21 pm

[37] i used to do that. in high school, my hair was down to my waist. i'd put it in a pony tail, then tuck it under my hat/helmet. it looked like i had the shortest hair on the field! during my sophomore season, i dislocated my shoulder diving back into 3rd. it was the most painful experience EVER! the idiot coach put it back in - and did a horrible job of it. he stood me up and i took my helmet off. all this hair came flying down my back and then the whole crowd and stuff stopped caring about my immense pain and oohed and aahed about my locks. it was ridiculous. people need to realize it's only hair. the catcher from the other team, was cool and came up to me to tell me he, too, had a long pony tail tucked under his helmet! : )

41 The Hawk   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:27 pm

I really don't want to play the Dodgers in the WS, should the Yanks advance. I just can't stand the Yanks vs Torre angle. I don't even like to contemplate it.

How 'bout that Manny though? Ouch

42 Dimelo   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:28 pm

A lot of confidence at the banter about who we'll be playing in the world series, have we played game 1 yet?

43 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:30 pm

[39] coolio, thanks!

[40] oh yeah, i LOVE the line in that song. Five Man Electrical Band. i know the song via Tesla and their acoustic live record. good stuff! : )

44 The Hawk   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:32 pm

[42] If you're suggesting people are assuming the Yanks will advance, I don't think that's true. Not for most people, anyway.

45 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:34 pm

[42] yeah, lotsa IF's in our talks about it...

cowchip STILL can't pronounce "fasciitis". god, chip and buck are just awful

46 Dimelo   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:34 pm

[44] I guess, for me at least, I'm all about the ALCS. I got Angels on my mind, and I don't want to see them in heaven.

47 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:38 pm

exciting inning.

48 Rich   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:39 pm

Escaped.

49 randym77   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:40 pm

[44] Absolutely. I am not taking anything for granted. The Angels least of all.

50 The Hawk   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:40 pm

[46] Sure but tonight NLCS game one is on - it's hard not to look at these teams as potential opponents - for one night, at least. Tomorrow the real deal starts (weather permitting) and talk of Dodgers and Phillies goes on the back burner.

51 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:41 pm

[46] i hear ya, man. let's bury them south of heaven! : )

53 Dimelo   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:50 pm

[50] This game is like Christmas day for me, I'm just sitting back enjoying it.

54 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:53 pm

[52] that's teh awesome!

[53] yeah man, it's soooo nice to watch a baseball game and simply enjoy it, without living & dying with every pitch. i'm getting close to cracking my first ale of the evening and just watching (and reading baseball news online...)

55 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:54 pm

when chip caray just looked directly at the camera, i gave him the finger.

56 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:56 pm

[14] One, I am not at all worried. Two, having Jeter start at SS for 140 games instead of 155, is hardly a platoon. And my thought is as much for Pena, to keep him a bit better oiled, as it is for Jeter. Three, I'm just about as bored now as I am in January.

57 Just Fair   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:58 pm

There's that Ethier kid. Raking away. Tie it up Torres.

58 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:58 pm

and it's time for chan ho park. i had a feeling LA would have a run scoring inning here. i wonder what manny will do for his next trick...

59 thelarmis   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:59 pm

[56] yeah man, these last 2 days with NO baseball games was just downright brutal. i am NOT looking forward to the offseason...

60 Dimelo   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:59 pm

[54] Exactly. I am catching up on some work emails, doing bills, and just enjoying it all. I'll pop open a beer with you. Cheers!

61 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 15, 2009 10:59 pm

Halfway during the game, I was stunned to see that Davey Lopes appears to be 300 years old. Further disconcerting was that he doesn't look all that much older than Raul Ibanez.

114 thelarmis   ~  Oct 16, 2009 1:27 am

[113] it always amazes me how much you thoroughly know about things from before your time. i thoroughly remember being a pretty young kid and getting Davey Lopes' 1981 Topps Dodgers card. it's in my parents' attic on long island (about 10 minutes or so from long beach), but i can see that card in my minds eye. and, yeah, davey lopes has certainly aged!

[115] my pop's best friend, used to be the VP of the Muts, in the early '80's. we call him "Uncle," but he's godfather to my big brother and me. he's worked with Pete Rose in Vegas for the past few years. he's given me some cool keepsakes and stories over the years and helped forge some great baseball memories for me when i was little.

he and my dad just had a big high school reunion and apparently he was staying at my house for the last week, or so... i won't see him at T'Day, but i will see my real uncle, which i'm psyched about! : )

[118] hey buddy! i know you like nomass. check out they're latest photoshop. it's the real deal! you know i'm not religious, but i do believe that Mo is GOD, in human form. Yanks in 6.

btw, your post number was 118. 1/18 was my grandma's birthday. she's the wife of my grandpa (hero) who recently left the planet. she's the person who raised me and was easily the greatest human being that ever lived, on any planet. every single time i look at a clock and see 1:18, i think of her. then again, i'm usually thinking of her anyway. in fact, the very first thing i see, every single day of my entire life when i wake up, is a picture of her.

it's something that i really, truly relate to with Nick Swisher. i completely understand his undying love - and appreciation - for his (maternal, methinks...???) grandparents. i respect the fact that he honors them in his everyday vocation. i know i do mine...

[118] i was never patriotic, but 9/11 hit me hard. and i'm not relgious, so "high" holidays don't affect me. since i moved to Atlanta, i've generally gone 'home' twice a year - passover and turkey day. when i was touring a ton, i'd also play in the area pretty regularly...

the end of the year, is usually "my time". atlanta is dead and i, obviously, don't celebrate christmas. i catch up on tons of things at my apartment and pretty much have my entire studio (warehouse) to myself to practice/compose/record.

pesach, is always a "fun" holiday and turkey day, holds no religious overtones, so it's generally a pretty benign time to head north. also, my mom and i both have birthdays that sandwich thanksgiving, so we knock out a lot of family moments then.

i was in NYC a ton more the end of last year and beginning of this year, 'coz of my grandpa's declining health. now that he's not physically here, i'm back to about twice a year visits...

[121] Hey man, that's great to read about your relationship to your grandfolks. My Aunty is like a grandmother to me (she's 17 yrs older than my Mom, crazy big Indian family with 12 children!) and she's exactly 50 years older than me. Unfortunately, she lives in Florida now so I don't get to see her too often. She's also lost a bit of her memory and her mental processes now..well, it can be difficult when talking to her. She taught me so much as a kid that I will always love and respect her so much. And, she gave me a photo of Reggie Jackson when I was 8! (Even though he was in an Angels uniform it was still a great present.)

You think we'll get the game in tomorrow?? I really hope so, but to be honest, this delay has kind of taken away a lot of my enthusiasm..thanks Bud & FOX, great job keeping the fans in mind!

Catch you in the morning (local time), got to feed Mr. OK Jazz Jr and then crack open a Guinness..maybe some live Herbie Hancock again tonight, am really digging that early 70s spaced-out sound.
