The Twinkies will sign him. He wants to play to that fan base. They need a franchise player. While the Twins have been notoriously cheap over the years, I think they will spend the $ to keep him. If not, they are very foolish.
They need to. Otherwise they'll be exposed as a real cheap team and they play in a taxpayer funded stadium. Not to mention that the AL Central is a winnable division for them.
Well, 'they need to' is correct, but what is Mauer worth on the open market right now? Is it, say 20 million for 7 years? Teixeira money? He's better. Can Minnesota pay that and field a team that includes Morneau at what HE is worth? (Teixeira money?)
If this happens, I suspect a home town discount will need to be part of it. And it might.
[3] I think Mauer wants to play for winning teams, in addition to getting paid. If he holds out for every last dollar, he'll be playing for some lousy teams. 7/20 sounds right, but there would have to be at least a verbal commitment from theTwins that they aren't going to surround him with a bunch of rookies. Maybe he'll have opt out provisions after 3-4 years.
I believe Mauer is worth Teixeira money to the Twins. They'll get killed if they don't sign him up -- that fan base will abandon the team and become Brewer fans (or maybe Cubs or White Sox fans). They'd become the Marlins.
Mauer will take a home town discount, but not a ridiculous one. 7 x 20 sounds reasonable (the Red Sox would pay more than that).
[5] Very happy to know he will bot be going to Fenway.
How many days till pitcher/catchers now? I'll miss JD but am excited for the Curtis Granderson era! And the JobaPhil monster this year will slay all challengers.
