"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa…Nice Shootin' Tex

Andy Pettitte and John Lackey are guys you could easily call “Meat” or “Hoss.” The two big fellas square off tonight at Fenway Park in the final game of the opening series of the season between the Yanks and Sox. The Yankees’ bullpen botched the first game and an error by Marco Scutaro helped blow the second game for the Sox. Think we’ll see more of the pens tonight or will one of these starting pitchers put up a commanding performance?

It’s Big John Red Sox debut. I suppose we should gear-up for another long one.

Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

AAAAAAAAAAH!!!!

Ghostbusters AND Blazing Saddles references?!?!?!?

You're crossing the streams, Alex!!!

Lets hope our Hoss is better than their Hoss!

4 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 7, 2010 7:17 pm

is every analyst contractually obligated to mention that Lackey started Game 7 as a rookie?

5 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 7, 2010 7:26 pm

Robbie was no where near 2nd base on that play

6 monkeypants   ~  Apr 7, 2010 7:37 pm

[5] I saw that too.

The offense is pretty anemic so far tonight.

7 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 7, 2010 7:55 pm

Doesn't look like 1,000 comments tonight.
Where is everyone?

8 rbj   ~  Apr 7, 2010 7:59 pm

[7] Just got in from Aikido. Had to run some errands and it is raining cats & dogs here in Toledo. My pooches are none to happy, especially with the occasional rumble of thunder. They are following the advice in The Dangerous Book for Dogs : scram and cower

9 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:00 pm

Jeter has amazing Karma. My eyes tell me he has looked poorly at the plate, yet he has 4 hits. Then there's ARod, who rarely gets a cheap hit.

10 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:02 pm

so my season tickets came in the mail today.

Thanks Hank and Hal for the 15%-off NYY Steak for non-game days only coupon, thats gonna come in handy.

11 rbj   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:02 pm

Can we put Kay back in the Boston scoreboard?

12 ms october   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:18 pm

so cano is hitting everything but he still can't steal for shit

13 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:18 pm

I love that we never send pinch runners, but we send Cano, a man that's lost a footrace to Todd Jones

14 ms october   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:23 pm

leiter seems more talkative this year

15 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:30 pm

Is this the game thread???

16 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:30 pm

hey everyone. I'm working tonight.. catching the game via mlb audio. Exciting series to start the season...

17 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:30 pm

[10] I got mine too. For a minute, I thought the coupon was 15% off food from the Stadium (not on game days). I don't think I'd go to NYY Steak anyhow, but it does seem silly to give a non-Game day coupon (unless the restaurant is absolutely booked on game days). The Hard Rock coupon is also non-Game day, so I guess the same applies.

The $5 ticket coupons are always nice...assuming there are any applicable games available.

18 rbj   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:30 pm

Curtis to Cano: That's how you do it.

19 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:31 pm

Granderson looked very fast on that steal. He even stopped to look back into the plate.

20 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:34 pm

Can we sit Gardner against righties too? :)

21 rbj   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:40 pm

Crap, rain's blocking the satellite signal.

22 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:43 pm

Is there a big party I don't know about?
(Maybe that's where our offenxe is.)

23 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:44 pm

Woops.

24 rbj   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:44 pm

And we're back. Ouch!

25 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:45 pm

[22] I think everyone is out looking for the 2010 model of the Score Truck.

26 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:46 pm

Hey Dudes...you cannot let Ortiz beat you here...

27 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:48 pm

28 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:48 pm

What was Andy saying as he walked off the field?

29 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:50 pm

[17] yeah the $5 vouchers are always a treat, as well as this spiffy new "membership card" we get.

is it wrong that I'm getting this much schadenfreude out of the collapse of Papi? Nah, I didn't think so.

30 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:51 pm

ortiz took the first 2 months off in 09. what's in store for 10? 3 months? haha

31 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:51 pm

Is it me, or does it look like the Yankees are missing a ton of hittable pitches?

32 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:52 pm

I'll ask again. Is the Papi Plunge from loss of PEDs... or another reason? He ain't that old and he has certainly taken a major nosedive.

33 Just Fair   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:52 pm

Just got in from my JV game. Our guys lost 36-2. F$%$ing Brutal. : / Glad to see Pettitte plunk Ugly to get to Ortiz.

34 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:53 pm

No intent there...Youkilis and Jeter both dive.

35 ms october   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:53 pm

[29] oh no that is a delicious schadenfreude

[25] we are still waiting on chyll to update his score truck since matsui was the cover boy

36 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:53 pm

[28] Suzyn just said that after the inning Andy said to VMart something to the effect of "make sure he's alright" referring to Youklis.

37 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:54 pm

[32] Papi had good years during testing, and HGH has no impact on performance, so I would guess that he is experiencing a natural, albeit rapid decline, which is not uncommon for a man of his size.

38 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:56 pm

Man, does NJ hit the ball hard...right at fielders.

39 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2010 8:57 pm

Nick hit that one on the screws...

40 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:00 pm

They've hit the ball hard...just need Andy and the bullpen to keep it close.

41 RagingTartabull   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:00 pm

44 ms october   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:08 pm

after andy's odd spring i wasn't sure how well he would do tonight and how many innings he could make it - he's exceeded my expectations and looked pretty good

45 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:11 pm

Schoenweiss isn't going to beat us again, right?

46 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:11 pm

Late..1-0? only 44 on the game thread? 44 a great # but still...

Andy P looks good? But why have they not lit up John Lackey?

47 ms october   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:13 pm

48 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:16 pm

49 monkeypants   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:16 pm

Granderson has not looked very good against lefties so far.

50 monkeypants   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:16 pm

51 williamnyy23   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:17 pm

That AB was very troubling...very tough to have a liability in the lineup.

52 ms october   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:17 pm

53 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:17 pm

What will Sterling's home run call for Granderson be?

54 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:19 pm

well that was ugly but I'll take it

and fantasy points too!!

60 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:21 pm

Would it have been against the rules for Brett Gardner to drag Posada back to home plate?

61 ms october   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:22 pm

i hope bard turns out to be kyle farnsworth (tons of velocity with no movement)

62 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:22 pm

Nick Swisher batting 8th..this is a strong lineup...

63 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:24 pm

Man, is Jorge ever an adventure running the bases.

64 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:24 pm

58) JINX!

65 randym77   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:24 pm

I don't think I agree that HGH has no effect on performance. Someone posted an article here a few years back, where a journalist/athlete tried various PEDs, just to see what they did. HGH was the only one he wished he could continue taking...because it improved his vision so much. Not something that matters that much for, say, a football player, but for a hitter? That could be a huge advantage.

That said, I think it's too early to count Big Papi out. He could just be having a slow start.

66 ms october   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:28 pm

oh kenny - it is far more complex than that - if cervelli gets in the game and is mauled by a bear then what?

67 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:31 pm

Grab your mitt, ya little fucking runt ya.

68 ms october   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:31 pm

i'll take that from chp - but i'm not sure if all those flyball outs are a bad sign

69 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:36 pm

That's some impressive sequence of pitches Bard threw to Nicky.

70 monkeypants   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:40 pm

Evening, Team. Back from my local watering hole where I caught a couple innings. How 'bout that Andy Pettitte, eh?

Swish was money, that was nice, but I had a heart attack when I realized Jorgie was trying to score. I expected he'd be out by a mile. Then he missed the plate...

But he scored, in the end!

And how 'bout that Chan Ho Park?

76 Just Fair   ~  Apr 7, 2010 9:43 pm

It killed me when Ortiz killed the Yanks all those years, But i expected it. Ortiz beating us any time soon would just be nauseating. Adios, fat ass.

[160] Yes, yes, yes

163 The Hawk   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:16 pm

All right. The next two batters don't inspire confidence, but let's do this.

164 thelarmis   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:17 pm

now would be a good time for NJ's first hit of the season.

siddown stoopid lips!

165 thelarmis   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:17 pm

[163] no love for Tex?

166 Alex Belth   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:17 pm

Wow, knocked him out of the game. Doesn't do any good unless Yanks can score an insurance run here though.

167 cult of basebaal   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:18 pm

[161] yeah, 41 out of 47 for his career, man needs some schoolin' ...

168 RIYank   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:18 pm

Yo!

I've *just* arrived in Berkeley, and this funky hotel has no television -- I'm going to be watching the rest of this sucker on Gameday.

169 The Hawk   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:18 pm

[161] After a false start, yes he did. I guess he just needed to figure some things out emotionally.

170 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:19 pm

I want to see the Papel-tantrum

171 The Hawk   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:19 pm

[165] He traditionally stinks in April, and he's hitless in the last three games, so - not yet.

172 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:19 pm

Grandpa Atchison is back

173 OldYanksFan   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:20 pm

Gritner is just fun to watch. ADMIT IT MATTPAT!

174 The Hawk   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:20 pm

Don't they have a lefty to bring in here?

175 RIYank   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:20 pm

[174] That would be perfect, a LOOGY to walk NJ.

176 thelarmis   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:20 pm

[168] i hope you had an uneventful flight.

177 The Hawk   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:21 pm

[173] He can't really admit something if it's not true!

178 The Hawk   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:21 pm

[175] Why in gods name would they walk him??

179 monkeypants   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:22 pm

Just NJ bein' NJ.

180 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:22 pm

There he goes again.

181 RIYank   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:22 pm

[178] Isn't that the traditional role of a LOOGY?

182 thelarmis   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:22 pm

OBP.

[171] he's gonna snap out of it right here and now!

183 mjpucci   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:22 pm

This would be a splendid time for Tex's first hit. And I don't just say that because he anchors my fantasy team.

184 RIYank   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:22 pm

Anyway, Hawk, they managed to do it with a righty. Good job by Francona.

185 Mattpat11   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:22 pm

I'll take it

186 ms october   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:22 pm

191 NYYfan22   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:23 pm

192 monkeypants   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:23 pm

[178] Nick Johnson wills the opposing pitchers to walk him. His powers are beyond our comprehension.

Drag, Alex, that would have been fun to see you drive the ball, sweetie pie.

197 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:24 pm

[191] Six, I believe.

198 RIYank   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:24 pm

Damn.
Still, two runs for Mo.

199 thelarmis   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:25 pm

[191] 6 for Andrew Eugene. how ya doin', buddy? sorry i never emailed this offseason. i think i still have your addy....somewhere...

200 mjpucci   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:25 pm

[191] 6 innings. Really a vintage Pettitte performance: a little shaky at first, runners all over the place, but never gave in. A little RBI single by Ortiz the only damage.

Two of the balls were strikes on Gameday...

217 The Hawk   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:30 pm

[212] I don''t know. I think Pedroia is still pretty damned good.

Ellsbury I think might be among the most overrated players in baseball.

243 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Apr 7, 2010 10:34 pm

Curry said Granderson "hung in there against lefties" despite having some tough ab.
I'm sorry, I really wouldn't say he "hung in there." He looked dead lost up there.
