Take Two

Let’s try that again, shall we?

The Jays beat up on the Yanks last night. Here’s hoping the Yanks have a little something for that ass this afternoon. Go git ’em, boys.

Let’s Go Yan-Kees.

Big game today. A loss means we could be facing a sweep (with JV going tomorrow).

3 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 12:54 pm

By the way... anyone notice the Rays have gone into a bit of a slide the last 2 weeks?

4 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:13 pm

[3] Yup. Need a W today, keep the pressure on them.

5 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:13 pm

I've covering the game today ... won't have much time for comments ...

I wish Teix didn't uppercut his swing so much, so often ...

6 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:13 pm

That wasn't so good.
But, today we have to even the HR score. I'd prefer lots of base runners.

7 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:18 pm

Wheeeeeeeew. (That's a long, impressed whistle.)

Andy Pettitte, ladies and gentlemen.

8 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:18 pm

Swing and 3 misses ... nice

9 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:20 pm

I would honestly sit Teix for 2 games... just to let him watch a bit and settle down.

10 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:34 pm

Here we go K-Russ
Here we go!
{clap clap}

11 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:34 pm

Romero has not thrown a lot of strikes. The count has him at 50% or so, but I feel like our guys have swung at a lot out of the zone. Robinson did, for sure.

12 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:35 pm

That was a good example: Russo swung at two pitches that wouldn't have been strikes.

Oh well. Second time through, we'll murderize 'im.

13 randym77   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:36 pm

Young Ricky Romero gets out of it, despite being a bit wild.

14 seamus   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:36 pm

[11] and earned a couple of walks. One thing I like about Cervi and Gritty is that no matter how good they are hitting they both show plate patience.

15 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:36 pm

Romero so far: 40-23 PC/ST.

16 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:38 pm

[15] I know, but my point is a lot of those strikes were not in the strike zone, they were swung upon.

17 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:39 pm

Good god.

What the hell is going on here? Have the Jays struck some hideous Faustian bargain?

18 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:41 pm

Somethings is very wrong here.... PEDs in Toronto's water cooler???

19 randym77   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:42 pm

[17] It's so bizarre. Edwin Encarnacion is exhibit A. He's barely hitting .200, OPSing below .300...but has a .850 OPS thanks to his SLG. Seems like the whole team is like that. They don't get on base unless they hit a home run. This can't be sustainable...can it?

20 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:42 pm

[16] Not arguing.... just posting. If we can keep him at 20 pitches per IP, we will do OK.

21 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:43 pm

Bautista is the only untrue outcome so far for the Jays.

22 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:44 pm

[21] Shut up, stupid.

23 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:44 pm

SG at RLYW has posted both lineups. We know the Yankee lineup:
Toronto Blue Jays
Babe Ruth, C
Babe Ruth, 1B
Babe Ruth, 2B
Babe Ruth, 3B
Babe Ruth, SS
Babe Ruth, LF
Babe Ruth, CF
Babe Ruth, RF
Babe Ruth, DH

24 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:45 pm

[23] You misspelled "Dave Kingman".

25 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:46 pm

[23] As someone there commented....
Thank God he's not pitching!

26 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:48 pm

Amazing.... Jeter grounds out to SS.

27 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:50 pm

Stick!

28 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:55 pm

[27] Stuck.

29 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:56 pm

Swisher > Abreu

30 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 1:57 pm

[29] Swisher > wall > Abreu.

31 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:01 pm

Jays lead majors by wide margin in fly outs to ground outs ratio .... not a big surprise there.

32 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:02 pm

[30]

RIYank > Diane :-)

33 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:05 pm

This is slightly depressing.
Not the homers, that part is freakish and captivating. The Yankees making lots of outs on very few pitches part.

34 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:11 pm

[33] Score Truck must have gotten stuck in customs ...

35 seamus   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:11 pm

nice and efficient Andy.

36 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:14 pm

Watching this team on the field, it's hard to believe they lead in OPS and RS. The Jay's pitchers aren't this good.

37 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:14 pm

Christ. Gardy at 2nd before the cutoff man gets the ball.

38 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:17 pm

Ah. That was cathartic.

39 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:17 pm

[34] Ah, there we go, finally got through ...

40 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:20 pm

[39]
"Good afternoon. That a Score Truck?"
"Yessir."
"What you got in there, any home runs?"
"Yessir, got some in the back."
"Hmm. Uh huh. {tap tap} Do you want to step out of the vehicle, please?"

....

"Okay, it all checks out. You have a good trip."

42 seamus   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:21 pm

Tex is starting to get annoying. I know he'll come around but geez.

43 seamus   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:22 pm

[41] hehe.

44 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:23 pm

[41] Diane > RIY.

45 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:27 pm

Well that was a nice nap. And now a Yankee lead.

46 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:27 pm

Romero really isn't throwing his breaking pitches for strikes. Just sit on the fastball, boys...

No! Fuck.

47 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:30 pm

Good grief ... that's Liam Neeson as Hannibal in the A-Team movie?

48 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:34 pm

[47] Yes.
Looks great, doesn't it?

49 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:35 pm

[48]

Well, I'd definitely watch it on NetFlix ... don't know if I'd shell out $12 for it in the theater.

50 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:38 pm

[49] That's kind of how I feel about a Yankees/Blue Jays game.

Good job, Andrew!
He was on CG pace until this inning, but now it's touch and go.

51 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:43 pm

Ah, the oh so original & charming "Yankees suck" chant.

52 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:44 pm

You know how some pitchers go up to 110 ... this one goes to 111.

53 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:45 pm

Well done, Kevin.

54 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:47 pm

What was that?

55 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:47 pm

Well, *that* ended poorly ...

56 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:47 pm

AARGH!

57 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:50 pm

And now it costs us ...

58 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:50 pm

Hard to be surprised.

59 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:53 pm

I've never seen that on a swing!

60 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:56 pm

I suspect the score truck was double parked and has been impounded.

61 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:58 pm

Anyone else think sitting Teix for a game or two might shake him up a bit? The guy is pressing something awful.

62 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 2:59 pm

I guess the Yankee bats only awoke because they were facing Cleveland and the Orioles.

Meanwhile, if Pettitte would only throw changes and curves, he might have a no hitter going.

63 seamus   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:00 pm

injury delay?

64 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:01 pm

Suddenly the word "buckyballs" comes to mind. :-(

65 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:01 pm

[63]

Mr. Buck took a foul tip under the cup ...

66 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:03 pm

Tex has looked as bad as he has all season. Poor ABs.

67 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:05 pm

This lineup really hasn't hit good pitching in a while.

68 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:06 pm

[60] Maybe it's still in customs.

69 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:07 pm

[68] I guess someone makes that joke every 34 comments.

70 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:09 pm

[69] Ah. To be fair, I was napping earlier.

71 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:09 pm

Wow ... 10ks for Andy ... DANDY!

72 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:10 pm

OVER MANAGING!

73 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:10 pm

[70] Hm, are you in this afternoon's line-up? I think that's the best place for napping today.

74 seamus   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:11 pm

[65] thanks Diane. ouchie.

75 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:13 pm

[73] It's a nice, safe quiet place to be.

76 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:13 pm

Time to spin the wheel of bullpen roulette!

77 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:14 pm

This is exciting. I love Vegas!

78 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:15 pm

[76]

BANKRUPT ... you wanna use your FREE SPIN?

79 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:15 pm

That was a shock...fastball/slider pitcher to a lineup that can't hit soft stuff.

80 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:16 pm

odds on a 3-2 fastball landing 400 feet away?

81 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:17 pm

That was an awful pitch.

82 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:18 pm

97! Guess Bautista doesn't like to swing at every fastball after all.

83 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:18 pm

Jesus. I didn't know he could throw that pitch.

84 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:19 pm

[81] was about the slider that located the centroid of the strike zone, right? I swallowed hard.

85 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:23 pm

These at bats are pitiful.

86 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:25 pm

Not looking forward to another inning of Joba. Feels like he got lucky last inning.

87 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:28 pm

ARod has decent numbers but he is missing a lot.... A LOT of opportunities. And Teix? How about Gardy 3rd and Cano cleanup?

88 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:29 pm

The problem with Joba is his sliders looks like a ball out of his hand. Hitters are simply no longer fooled by it.

89 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:31 pm

[88] Heh. Good timing!

90 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:31 pm

Maybe Joba needs to start working on his curve.

91 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:31 pm

[89] It was a curve, not a slider.

92 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:32 pm

And of course, Overbay then nails the curve.

93 seamus   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:35 pm

if gameday is accurate, great location ont hat last pitch.

94 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:35 pm

[93] It was located well.

95 RagingTartabull   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:36 pm

I feel safe saying the Joba corner has been turned

96 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:36 pm

That's the kind of swings he needs to be able to get.

97 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:37 pm

Wow.
All his pitches are working. Even the slider.

I admit I was holding my breath.

98 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:37 pm

Good job Joba!

99 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:37 pm

Yay, free baseball.

100 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:37 pm

[95] Oh, god, I don't.
I need to see maybe three more good appearances first.

[100] Same here...need to see more.

102 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:38 pm

Not the best part of the lineup, but then again, what is?

103 seamus   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:39 pm

[94] thanks for the confirmation. i never know whether or not to trust gameday

104 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:39 pm

That's simply a wasted AB.

105 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:39 pm

Oh no! [102] was not about the Score Truck being stuck in customs.

106 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:40 pm

Nice of the Yankees to make Gregg feel better about himself. Those two ABs were a joke.

107 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:41 pm

The strike zone has widened substantially.

108 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:42 pm

So, if we don't score here, who pitches the 10th?
I'd go with Mo.

109 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:42 pm

The Zombie Jeter continues to hit!

110 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:42 pm

[108] Marte probably, which means there isnt much chance of seeing the 11th.

111 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:43 pm

Not a good 2-0 swing there Nicky ...

112 RagingTartabull   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:45 pm

[100, 101] in 25 outings this year he's had 3 bad ones (Boston, Cleveland, Minny), and when they were bad, whoa were they bad.

I'm not discounting those but in 22 of 25 appearances he's been effective, anyone can have 3 bad days...especially a reliever. I just think with Joba we tend to grade on an insane curve because of his ability and what we expect from him.

113 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:46 pm

Good job, Nick, only now...
Is it wrong of me to hope Teix gets HBP?

114 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:46 pm

[111] Otherwise, though, great at bat by Nick.

Oh, boy ... it's Teix time ...

They really, really need to drop him in the lineup.

120 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 3:48 pm

I actually convinced myself that Tex was going to come through. He's been flat out awful. Really now way to mollify it. He has been the weakest link on this team.

Why dont they keep throwing that!!!

148 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:08 pm

There is no need to becareful with the breaking ball. You can throw a hanger right over the middle to Bautista. Do the Yankees still use scouts?

149 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:08 pm

[147] That's why.

150 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:08 pm

Smart of Joe to save Mo for Baltimore.

151 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:08 pm

Curve balls are hard to control. D-Rob is not a great curve ball pitcher. So if he throws a lot of them, he's going to walk guys.

152 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:09 pm

[149] He threw 2 of 3 for strikes. If they wouldnt screw around with fastballs well off the plate, that percentage would work just fine.

153 williamnyy23   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:10 pm

[151] He isn't? His curve is one of his better pitches. Besides, to Bautista, you don't need to throw a good curve. You just need to throw something around 80mph.

154 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:11 pm

Very nice job by D-Rob. Can't complain.

In fact, I can't complain about Joe's bullpen strategy. Even swapping in D-Rob for Damaso for the platoon was reasonable.

155 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:12 pm

Well, maybe I shouldn't have rendered my verdict quite so soon.

170 randym77   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:23 pm

I dunno. Seems like a lot of hard-hit balls have been caught today...on both sides.

171 ms october   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:24 pm

nicely done gritner.

172 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:25 pm

Why do runners look back? If the ball is hit, he can HEAR it...

173 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:25 pm

He seems to be getting a better feel for theft. I like to see that in a young man.

174 ms october   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:26 pm

damnit derek.

175 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:27 pm

[159] Well, I was 1 out of 3 ...

176 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:27 pm

AAAAAAARGH.
That seemed like the right spot. DAMMIT.

177 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:27 pm

And a grounder to SS. Who wuddathunkit?

178 randym77   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:28 pm

Sigh. That would have been a good time for one of Encarnacion's trademark wild throws into the stands.

179 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:28 pm

Oh, I guess Girardi wants to get back to the hotel.

180 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:29 pm

CHop?
Pepto please!

181 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:29 pm

Well, time for another spin. Must be running out of empty chambers by now ...

182 bartap   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:30 pm

Ugh...home run prone pitcher, power hitting lineup => not a good combo.

183 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:33 pm

184 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:35 pm

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand exhale!

185 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:35 pm

Nice.

Now is it too much to ask for a run here?

186 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:35 pm

[182] Bartap, another victim of Sterling's Law!

187 randym77   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:35 pm

Not bad. Aside from the walk, he made short work of the top of the order.

188 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:38 pm

This is the inning or this is the game.

189 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:39 pm

[188]

On with the show .... this is it!

190 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:40 pm

Oh, crap! Pitch was high, too.

191 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:41 pm

Please do NOT try and hit the ball 700'!

192 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:42 pm

Well that was not unexpected.

193 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:43 pm

Well, what the hell do you wear after a 5 strikeout day?

194 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:43 pm

OK ARod...... hit it 700'.

195 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:43 pm

That was brutal.
I should just lower my expectations.

196 JeremyM   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:44 pm

A golden shit-hat.

197 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:44 pm

Well... this game is over.

198 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:44 pm

[193]

You attempt to put ON the golden sombrero, but miss your head ....

199 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:44 pm

[197] I really have to brush up on the rules.

200 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:44 pm

I'll say it again. The Jays' pitching is NOT this good.

220 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 4:56 pm

Rommie "Dearest" Lewis in the pen for the Jays.

228 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:03 pm

Now would be a great time for Frankie's first home run.

229 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:04 pm

[228]

2nd?

230 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:06 pm

Janssen must be tired. He must be.

231 Diane Firstman   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:06 pm

For those who care ... Gardy has 6 career homers ... 1 of them here.

232 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:07 pm

[229] For this year.

Sigh.

233 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:09 pm

I'm going to be very disappointed in anything other than a homer from Brett now.

234 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:10 pm

I'll take a single here.

235 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:10 pm

[237] Yup

240 rbj   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:18 pm

Yuck. And now the pen is burnt for tomorrow, and as it's another 1 pm game, I expect to see Chad behind the plate.

Good night all.

241 RIYank   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:18 pm

Oh well.
Free baseball. Bad outcome.

See youse tomorrow to avoid the sweep.

242 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:18 pm

Look at it this way, by losing in the 14th, the Yankees made sure Teixeira didn't have to face to possibilty of striking out 6 times today ...

243 randym77   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:22 pm

[242] Ugh. I wonder if he's still injured or something.

244 cult of basebaal   ~  Jun 5, 2010 5:28 pm

[243] Perhaps his bats need hats?

245 OldYanksFan   ~  Jun 5, 2010 7:45 pm

Well... at least the Rays lost (again).
