"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Try Try Again

I watched the entire game yesterday. Bob Dylan’s voice kept repeating in my head, “It’s a hard, it’s a hard...” Just about everything was hard yesterday, for both teams, but especially for the Yanks who scored just one run (in the first inning). I’m a just try and fergit it and hope for better things today.

The heat has returned. Gunna be a scorcher today and tomorrow.

Keep cool and Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

Wow, a 4-0 defeat for Argentina. Not stunning that they lost, Germany is a powerhouse, but a stunning second half collapse.

Here's hoping the Yankee offense wakes up today.

It's Nick Green. I didn't know he was a Jay again.

3 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 1:14 pm

Crap

4 randym77   ~  Jul 3, 2010 1:14 pm

Nick Green and Jose Bautista. Unreal.

5 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 1:21 pm

Wowzers!

6 randym77   ~  Jul 3, 2010 1:23 pm

That would have been ugly if Huffman didn't make that nice catch.

7 seamus   ~  Jul 3, 2010 1:28 pm

nice at bat for jetes

8 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 1:32 pm

I'm beginning to wonder if the Yankees could score if they hit a home run.

9 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 1:54 pm

Sigh.

10 NYYfan22   ~  Jul 3, 2010 1:54 pm

This is ridiculous. fuck.

11 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:08 pm

Bases loaded, no outs. But will the Yankees score?

12 randym77   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:08 pm

YES! Tie game.

That was funny, about Curtis not knowing the Upper East Side was in Manhattan.

But jeez, how can he afford to live there?

13 NYYfan22   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:09 pm

Thank you, Yankees, for bringing some offense. THANK YOU, and happy 4th.

14 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:10 pm

3 whole runs? Is that allowed?

15 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:19 pm

Yee-ouch!

16 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:23 pm

Gritner!

17 randym77   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:23 pm

Holy crap, Gardy.

18 seamus   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:24 pm

oh crap. i still had gardner on my bench for my fantasy team. crap.

19 seamus   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:26 pm

[18] and by crap i mean WOO HOO!

20 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:26 pm

According to Mr. Sterling, "Gardy goes Yardy!"

[18] I've got him starting today! Haha...2 Runs, 2 Hits, 4 RBI's, to say nothing of OPS.

21 seamus   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:28 pm

[20] oh nice! I was worried he'd be rusty after the injury and was leaving him on the bench until he showed signs... But good for you!

22 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:29 pm

[21] I switched him for markakis (who is clueless against lester)

23 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:31 pm

By the way, this game just makes me madder that we lost yesterday. We should own the BJs.

24 seamus   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:34 pm

[22] oh i also have markakis. But was too busy to look at matchups.

25 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:37 pm

looks like i came by at a good time! : )

26 randym77   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:37 pm

Wow, nothing's going right the Jays this inning.

27 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:41 pm

Now that was a good inning.

28 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:43 pm

Wow.

It was 2-0 when last I checked. We seem to have had some kind of outburst.

Highlights, anyone?

29 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:44 pm

A laugher? For the 2010 NY Yankees? Nice...ok to watch Paraguay v Spain.

30 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:46 pm

[28] Gardner's grand salami

31 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:46 pm

[29] actually, you should watch the cubs game. really. i just tried and am really disappointed - and shocked - it's not on wgn. anyway, at least check the box score... (hint, hint) !!!

32 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:47 pm

now, that's how you throw a shutdown inning after putting up a crooked number!

[28] andy is most definitely a golden god!

33 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:51 pm

[31] Thanks for the tip, hopefully MLB TV will break to the game. Six innings done.

34 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:55 pm

[30] Cheers! Was it just over the 314 or was it legit?
[32] :) Yes he is!

35 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 2:58 pm

[34] Legit -- several rows back. RF didn't even really move.

36 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:01 pm

Go Brett!

37 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:09 pm

dammit. randy wells got a 3-run lead, then promptly gave up his 1st hit to start the 7th. he had given up a walk, so he was working on a no-no and not perfecto, but it's all gone now...

38 randym77   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:10 pm

Chris Heisey ended the no-hitter in Chicago.

Heisey's dad died of Lou Gehrig's disease a couple of years ago. He's got a disabled sister as well, so his mom can't even come to watch him play.

39 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:18 pm

[38] yikes. who knew? well, besides you! that is sad. i'm glad heisey had a good day, he deserves it...

40 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:18 pm

anyone know why vernon's outta the game?

41 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:20 pm

this is the tex we signed up for. keep it up, dude!

42 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:26 pm

Ummm...who the fuck is Dustin Moseley?

43 randym77   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:28 pm

[39] MLB had that special ALS day a few weeks back, and Heisey threw out the first pitch and the media covered his story.

He's from eastern PA, so he's almost a local boy.

44 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:34 pm

[43] ah. cool, thanks. i was just in philly last weekend. i wonder if heisey is a penn state fan!

[42] he's your new multi-inning reliever...

45 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:35 pm

[42] A reliever who can get outs. New concept, aside from Mo.

46 randym77   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:39 pm

Dustin Mosely was a first round draft pick in 2000. Drafted by the Reds, was traded to the Angels, and played for them until he was released last winter.

47 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:42 pm

2 innings, 15 pitches.

kick ass!!!

48 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:52 pm

oh jesus, it's pepto.

final score will be 11-10...

49 rbj   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:54 pm

Yay! Ice cream for everyone!

50 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:55 pm

Cheers, guys. Actually, now that you mention California, I think I do vaguely recall the name.

Though wrt whether he can get outs or not, I'll have to see it to believe it.

51 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:55 pm

i doesn't believe it ... a 1-2-3 from pepto. huh.

andy's 10-2

tabata won rookie of the month NL on twib.

stras pitches in a few minutes...

52 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:56 pm

Ok, I hate to be a hyper-suspicious pessimist (actually, I don't, really), but am I the only one troubled by one eleven run inning sandwiched between eight scoreless ones?

53 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:56 pm

(Ok, seven scoreless ones.)

54 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 3:59 pm

[52] no, i noticed that, too. and i'm sure william will mention it later! : )

55 randym77   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:06 pm

They probably weren't trying too hard after putting up 11. Heck, if they had, they'd probably get plunked. The unwritten rules of baseball!

Time to switch over to Fox. Strasburg is pitching in the Mets game.

56 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:07 pm

[55] speaking of the unwritten rules, this is pretty hilarious:

http://twitpic.com/211sa3

i'm still crossing my fingers fox let's me watch stras and not the braves...

57 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:09 pm

[52] After eleven runs, they played with the foot off the gas. Does it mean anything that no runs were scored in the other innings? Nah, but maybe some of the sage pessimists will have something to say.

Nice to see Texeira with two doubles, and 51 RBIs total. Even with his plate futility, he is on track for a 100. And the team went 5 for 14 with RISP.

58 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:11 pm

ah, bollocks.

braves. figures. i am in atlanta...

fuck fox

59 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:12 pm

at least tommy hanson is pitching. i like this kid...

60 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:14 pm

[59] same thing in B'ham thelarmis.

61 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:14 pm

[56] I wonder if Brandon's girlfriend says that to him?

62 Evil Empire   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:17 pm

Let's take this series tomorrow and go 5-2 out west before the ASB!

63 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:19 pm

[60] at least there's no fister caray!

[61] would be even better if she called him 'brandon'! ; )

64 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:23 pm

[62} That would be great, and vastly different from what happened last year when the Angels swept before the ASB. I'm sure that many Banterers were writing off the team last year after that series.

65 randym77   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:26 pm

Strasburg is really struggling.

66 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:26 pm

inauspicious start for stras.

3 walks, stolen base, error (pudge), double. 1 run.

bases loaded. already at 35 pitches...

1 K

67 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:27 pm

[63] Yeah, sorry I didn't get the name exactly right for an Oakland As player.

68 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:28 pm

37 pitches. got out of it. only 1 run.

really sucks that chipper's gonna retire. i think he should play out his contract for the next 2 years...

69 thelarmis   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:29 pm

[67] um, i was joking! i thought it was funny, like timmay w/ arrroyo...

i thought both of our posts were funny...

70 jjmerlock   ~  Jul 3, 2010 4:39 pm

I have to give this team credit. They have the strangest way, when things look bleakest, to put a completely dominant performance up against all seemingly sensible evaluations of which way momentum is heading.

Facing an even tougher lefty, 11 runs in one inning?

It's a reminder why these guys know way more than we do about what's really going on, and that's why they don't panic or overreact.

I do enjoy when they confound expectations in a good way.

71 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 3, 2010 5:50 pm

[55] Yeah, fair enough. But they'd motherhumping *better* show up to play tomorrow, is all I'm saying.

72 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Jul 3, 2010 5:54 pm

[70] (Nearly) Any team can score eleven runs in an inning--Sterling's Law.

It only means something if it's the start of more consistent production. Talk to me this time next week and we'll reassess.

73 jjmerlock   ~  Jul 4, 2010 5:52 am

[72] When I finally watched the inning (and I couldn't even watch the whole game, as my mlb.tv player reset more than twenty times - and even after an hour of tech troubleshooting, the best the thing could do was get me through the inning before crashing again, repeatedly (I finally gave up on watching the game)) it was in some ways, one of the less impressive 11 run outbursts I've seen.

A lot of help from the Blue Jays.

There were some good at bats, though, thrown in there.

Otoh, maybe it will alleviate some of the pressure of the collective slump.

We'll have to see though, indeed, whether this can get things going in the right direction.
