Tigers announcers made a good point earlier today.
Verlander gave up 3 runs in 6 innings, the definition of a Quality Start. Plus he had 9 strikeouts. But he also gave up 6 hits and 5 walks, so he struggled, and it really wasn't a quality start.
[45] I still feel like they might be laying in the weeds on something semi-major as far as a bat, Dunn specifically. Thats partly wishful thinking, but it just wouldn't surprise me.
Kenny Albert really makes you appreciate Joe Buck. I say that with a straight face.
isn't that the way of it with relievers though? the guy you put expectations on ends up shitting the bed, and then some random person turns into the go-to guy who no one can hit. Witness: playoffs last year. Joba and Hughes all of the sudden look unreliable, Marte and Robertson become Mr. Automatics
[51] right, that year the premier reliever they trade for can't get anyone out. but Hideki Okajima is utterly unhittable...can't predict baseball Suzyn.
thats why I try not to lose sleep over bullpens, they just seem to kinda work themselves out at some point. The Yanks need help there, sure. But you never know, they could call up Albaladejo and he pitches to a 1.29 ERA down the stretch. Not saying I'm banking on that, but relievers are just funny like that.
[52] I'd rather they do that than trade for a reliever. If Albaladejo comes up and bombs, we can make him go away again quickly. If we trade for Kerry Wood we'll just keep running that guy out there.
Outside of the very, very few obvious exceptions, bull[pen pitchers just aren't good pitchers. They are often mediocre pitchers who have a good season, or a good half season. A relief pitcher who is pitching well is much more likely to be in an uncharacteristically good stretch than he is to be a really good pitcher.
There. How many more ways can we think of to say the same thing?
Jesus, Dustin, just bean him and get it over with.
So they actually split up Buck and Tim? I've got Buck on here as they are playing the Cardinals-Dodgers game today. I was worried something had happened to McAsshole. ;)
not to nitpick, but there IS one photo I know of of Torre in the stadium. On the field level concourse where they have photos of every championship above the concession stands. For 2000 theres a big full color shot of Torre, Giuliani, and Steinbrenner holding the trophy at the parade.
My last thought - seriously, where is this Jeter thing headed?
He's gone on bad runs before and it always seems to turn out that he's been playing injured (which I always find kind of infuriating, because it seems like that means that he's been hurting the team, but I guess his out has always been that there isn't a better option) - but he looks dreadful, right now.
I have no doubt the Yankees can score 6,7,12 more runs in this game. Unfortunately, I can't overlook the bullpen's propensity to giving up a fistfull more, too..
“A.J. Burnett cut his hands in an act of frustration after the second inning today. He came into the clubhouse and slammed his hands against a set of double doors, cutting his palms on the plexi glass that holds the lineup card. Burnett said he was embarrassed and wanted to stay in the game so he told a trainer he had fallen. “
[101] What else can you do? Burnett is an imbecile and we have a bullpen that's completely incapable of keeping a game close even when the "A" relievers are in, let alone the crew we sent out there today. Harping on it is not going to change that we have a real opportunity tomorrow.
[104] You know what the funny thing is, and it's not really that funny... after swinging and missing on Cliff Lee (though I am still grateful for that), I figured we would lose one of our starters shortly thereafter. Didn't count on it being AJ, but I was pretty much on the mark. If he does go down for say, three starts, how does that affect the plan with Phil? Do you spot-start a minor leaguer or reinstate Joba as starter? Or do you go get Ted Lilly? Yeah, AJ's an "A"-hole right now...
[107] Probably just a spot starter. I have no desire to see Joba pitch meaningful innings as a starter or a reliever, and while I'd like Lilly, I think any move they would make would be more of a Cory Lidle-ish career mediocrity, and if we;re going for that level of talent, I'd much rather just call up a guy from the minors.
Is Mitre still on the DL? If not, I'd go for a Meat Tray vs. Meat matchup. A Bronx Banter Butcher Block Buster featuring Bronx Bombers, busts, bleeps and blunders... brilliant!
Tigers-Indians DH, Yankees @ 4 pm, and too damn hot to be outside.
Sofa + day of baseball = happy camper.
[1] A man after my own heart.
It's Africa, Africa hot out there.
Greetings from section 205. ..... It is indeed Africa hot
Just watched the Red Sox-Rangers highlights from yesterday. Benji Molina hit for the cycle including a grandslam and 8th inning triple. Sweet!
Kay announced that Berra had a fall in his house yesterday, that's why he isn't there today
Mickey Rivers almost hit it out; settles for walk-off double. Man ya gotta love that guy...
AJ should have pied Mickey Rivers
Whitey Ford looked better today than he has in a long time. There was a period where I was worried about him.
Oh Jesus Christ Boone Logan is back
Swisher butchered that one about 3 different ways. Ugh.
%#@$%#$%%
That's the way Robbie.
Oh god, not the payroll discussion again.
I actually like that the Rays are undefeated when Niemann starts on the road. Has tp end sometime, why not today?
hey have you guys heard about the payroll?
you know what else is weird? a one bedroom apartment in downtown Tampa is significantly cheaper than one on Park Avenue...weird right?!
Niemann really struggling this inning.
GUT GRIT
Gritner!
Brett the Jet. Crazy. Atta boy!
Professional Hitter Gritner!
Was afraid that was a double play ball off the bat. Very happy to see I was wrong.
Very nice.
Hi Will. Take it easy on my brain, please, I'm slightly addled from the heat (and a pre-dinner cocktail, I admit).
Great. AJ's first Yankee injury. Oy!
Its just depressing to watch Jeter
Crap. Well c'mon, FreakNick...
Tigers announcers made a good point earlier today.
Verlander gave up 3 runs in 6 innings, the definition of a Quality Start. Plus he had 9 strikeouts. But he also gave up 6 hits and 5 walks, so he struggled, and it really wasn't a quality start.
Thank goodness. Yeesh. Don't show movement in the pen and jump to conclusions about AJ.
(23) Not to worry, I'm visiting Uncle Woodrow today, so I'll just be lurking about mostly...
AJ seems wild. Even for him.
So its safe to assume that Mike Harkey is playing pitching coach again?
This fucking sucks.
Maybe bring in Dustin right now?
Looks like something is wrong with AJ.
its gonna be one of those afternoons...
Booing a guy for being hurt is bush.
AJ isn't good.
[29] Oh, "mostly", or "mo(de)stly"?
[34] Other than being AJ Burnett?
Yup, it's Dustin Moseley.
[38] Yes. For those not watching on TV...the trainer took him out, so it's not just suckitude.
What an albatross this contract is going to turn into.
yes Kenny Albert, its because of the pie that he's hurt. Thats it. Marv is ashamed of you.
so to distract ourselves from the depression this game is about to turn into...2 weeks till the deadline, predictions anyone?
Is Al Downing still around?
Nice job, Big Dusty.
[42] Nothing major. Maybe a lefty off the bench or a reliever we'll all come to hate
[45] I still feel like they might be laying in the weeds on something semi-major as far as a bat, Dunn specifically. Thats partly wishful thinking, but it just wouldn't surprise me.
Kenny Albert really makes you appreciate Joe Buck. I say that with a straight face.
[44] [45] I'm hoping for a bat. But I agree that any reliever they pick up is very likely to be a reliever we will come to hate.
isn't that the way of it with relievers though? the guy you put expectations on ends up shitting the bed, and then some random person turns into the go-to guy who no one can hit. Witness: playoffs last year. Joba and Hughes all of the sudden look unreliable, Marte and Robertson become Mr. Automatics
[47] My Farnsworth senses have been tingling lately. I don't know if its the humidity or we're about to do something stupid.
[46] Dunn would be great.
A-Rod is ending up in one of those "I'm gonna hammer the ball directly at someone for a week" slumps
[48] Exactly.
And think of the Sox' trade for Gagne.
[52] I'd rather they do that than trade for a reliever. If Albaladejo comes up and bombs, we can make him go away again quickly. If we trade for Kerry Wood we'll just keep running that guy out there.
[52] We're on the same page.
See, should have just beaned him.
Boy would it have stunk if Moseley had opted out of his deal to join another team....
SHUT. UP. TIM.
For 2000 theres a big full color shot of Torre, Giuliani, and Steinbrenner holding the trophy at the parade.
so...yeah. Just saying.
[58] Is it wrong to want something to happen to Timmah? Maybe he should fall down at his house and not be available today.
[60] If it is, I don't know if I want to be right!
BRAINS!!! ... using his LEGS!!!
Yes, Frankie. A stolen base by a catcher.
Breakthrough hit for Jeter here.
Sigh.
ok now Jeter is just getting unlucky
Dear Derek,
Please stop killing us at the plate!
KTHXBY
Or that.
How many fucking pitches has Jeter seen today? I missed the first few innings and am stuck listening to Sterling, thanks to FUX.
Yesterday, Jeter was truly spectacular - in four useless at bats, he saw 7 pitches. On his fifth ode to futility, he saw six pitches.
He looks awful.
Lacerations for AJ? What?
Susan is speculating that he pulled a Kevin Brown.
dammit. forgot it was an afternoon game.
What happened with AJ?
The lacerations on his hand made him pitch like AJ Burnett?
All this suckatude plus Boone Logan?
welp, we had ourselves a game for 4 innings
But Shane Moseley would have walked away if we didn't bring him up.
well, this isn't going well...
It was a three run home run in the fifth you moron.
And... I'm done with this game. Can't watch it, anyway, thanks to F**.
Sounded like a frustrating game headed nowhere good from very early on.
It has me a little concerned.
I have no doubt the Yankees can score 6,7,12 more runs in this game. Unfortunately, I can't overlook the bullpen's propensity to giving up a fistfull more, too..
see?
um....wow!
Teixeira seems to finally be finding his form, though, which is encouraging.
Timmah makes me want to bang my head against the wall -- hard.
reliever #40
reliever #41
we'd be in really good shape if reliever #42 pitches today, however unlikely...
fucking sucks.
I'm just gonna go clean my room now... hope the team has a serious comeback and i get to miss it again. :-'
go-dan, go away...
Does one team really need Moseley and Gaudin?
I was thinking about going to this game. I've always wanted to go to an Old-Timers' Day.
But between the heat and the way this game has gone, I'm kinda glad I stayed home.
Jorge!
Per Suzyn > per Kim Jones > per Cashman: AJ tripped going up the stairs to the dugout and that's how he cut his hand.
Does one team really need Moseley and Gaudin?
Don't forget Humperdink!
Huh?
Just imagine a pairing of Tim McCarver & Joe Morgan.
On second thought, don't.
new yankee mandate: all pitchers must wear protective gloves when not on mound.
[95] Bubble wrap. Also to be used on Yogi.
At least he didn't end up on the DL due to trying to hold in a sneeze, like Mat Latos. Or get attacked by hotel room furniture, like Russell Branyan.
[97] Kenny Rogers went on the DL one time after getting poked in the eye by his kid. Maybe it was just a missed start, but still...
well thank god that shit is over.
Alright. These games happen. Just win tomorrow.
[100] The voice of reason? Really?? >;)
Confirmation that AJ has a 10 cent head:
http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2010/07/17/breaking-news-burnett-cut-hands-in-act-of-frustration-lied-to-trainer-about-fall-because-he-was-embarrassed/
[102] That's just too bad. Now they have to childproof the clubhouse. I hope they do the subway station, too...
[101] What else can you do? Burnett is an imbecile and we have a bullpen that's completely incapable of keeping a game close even when the "A" relievers are in, let alone the crew we sent out there today. Harping on it is not going to change that we have a real opportunity tomorrow.
Oooh, hooray!
Old Timer's Day encore! I missed it so this is exciting!
(Timers' Day)
[104] You know what the funny thing is, and it's not really that funny... after swinging and missing on Cliff Lee (though I am still grateful for that), I figured we would lose one of our starters shortly thereafter.
[106] (no, Old Timers' Day >;)
[107] Probably just a spot starter. I have no desire to see Joba pitch meaningful innings as a starter or a reliever, and while I'd like Lilly, I think any move they would make would be more of a Cory Lidle-ish career mediocrity, and if we;re going for that level of talent, I'd much rather just call up a guy from the minors.
Carl Pavano (who?) is ELEVEN and SIX????
Coming soon on the "Everything old is new again" tour, Carl Pavano II
Is Mitre still on the DL? If not, I'd go for a Meat Tray vs. Meat matchup. A Bronx Banter Butcher Block Buster featuring Bronx Bombers, busts, bleeps and blunders... brilliant!
I had a strong feeling that AJ story about tripping and falling was not the truth.
