Ivan Nova tries to stay souped-up against that formidable talent, Brandon Morrow this afternoon in the Bronx.

The weatherman says a big storm might blow into town. Jays in town for three day games.

Never mind the picnic, Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

for the longest time I was anti- jerseys with the name on the back, but it kinda is hard to ignore the fact that they usually run about $60 cheaper than the authentics...just sayin

2 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:01 pm

How does the weather look?
We have very serious rainage right now in Southern New England. Sheets and buckets.

3 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:12 pm

Not liking it so far.

4 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:18 pm

this is 2nd time Jays have seen Nova within 2 weeks ...

Okay, I'm liking it a little more now.
Cash them, sluggers!

Man, you almost feel bad for the kid.

8 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:27 pm

Teeny tiny strike zone today, huh?

9 Just Fair   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:28 pm

[7] b.o.o.h.o.o.

10 Just Fair   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:29 pm

Yikes, Curtis. That was WAY TOO CLOSE.
Atta boy, Teix.

11 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:29 pm

[8] Not on that fastball to Teixeira! Half a foot outside, called a strike.

Oooh. However, I forgive Cederstrom.

12 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:29 pm

I hate Sterling .... it is high it is far ... it is .... OFF THE WALL ...

13 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:30 pm

I wonder if they'll IBB Robbie.
Nope. But veerrrry careful, I bet.

14 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:31 pm

Rob could have walked.
I hope Jorgie is willing to walk.

15 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:33 pm

Oh, come on. That's really infuriating. Ball four, Jorge. Dammit.

16 seamus   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:34 pm

[15] and berkman swinging early. i don't get it...

17 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:36 pm

[16] I don't blame Berkman -- that pitch looked fat. But Rob and Jorgie let Morrow off the hook, and there's a decent chance that he'll find his groove and go six or seven strong innings now. Grrrr.

18 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:37 pm

Ah. The strike zone is a little to one side today.
Cederstrom is consistent, at least.

19 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:39 pm

Just got back from working a gig in Maine. I logged in and commented while I was there, but Wordpress refused to recognize my comments. Just as well, as I would have only talked about how nice Maine is; too bad it's in Red Sox territory.

20 seamus   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:41 pm

[17] yeah gameday had it as a strike.

21 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:41 pm

[12] In this case, at least he didn't exactly make a mistake. It was high and far and off the wall. I'm surprised it wasn't caught.

22 Just Fair   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:41 pm

It's Molina. Go after him!

23 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:41 pm

Cool, what part of Maine?

24 Just Fair   ~  Sep 3, 2010 1:44 pm

[23] Portland. I drove up through the Maine Turnpike; I had a dream some time ago about those trees, and now I know why. Smells nice up there, too. My brother-in-law promises to lead us around Acadia on another trip.

Another day at the park. It's early, but the Yanks seem to be cruising along.

The most empty seats I've seen this year at the stadium.

Time to move the game along to make it official.

48 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:20 pm

They're playing like there's Nova Morrow ....

59 The Hawk   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:29 pm

60 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:30 pm

[56] Nova Scioscia conference, wasn't that a summit meeting between Nixon and Kosygin?

61 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:31 pm

68 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:35 pm

If the Blue Jays hit some home runs, the Yankees are really going to regret leaving all those base runners in the early innings when they had Morrow on the ropes.

Sorry. I felt someone had to say that.

69 thelarmis   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:35 pm

let's get 3 quick outs.

thank you, please!

[66] I dunno, I guess it will take the 7 and change in Grand Central. Could take a while.

73 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:39 pm

[68] That's what I like about you RI, amongst the levity you bring the banter in focus. Yes, the Yankees should be laughing by now. Instead we have a ballgame. One more out and it's offical, then let it rain in buckets for the rest of the day.

74 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:40 pm

[72]

hmm ... I wonder how the rain swipes its Metrocard?

75 Just Fair   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:42 pm

[74] Lightning quick.

81 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:45 pm

Hey .... Nova can still get win if they get Overbay here, then rain ends game after 4 and a half, right?

82 thelarmis   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:46 pm

[74] or...with a thunderous blow!

83 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:46 pm

[73] I would say his is more brevity than anything else, which certainly gives us depth...

84 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:47 pm

[81] I believe he has to complete five innings to get the win. Ironically, if Blooney gets the out, and then the game is called, he would get the win facing one batter.

85 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:49 pm

You're all wrong. I was quoting Ozzy Ozbourne quoting Willy Wonka quoting Ogden Nash...

86 Just Fair   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:53 pm

If Brian ever get arrested it would be Tallet to the judge.

87 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:56 pm

[86] If he got caught in the rain, would they bring a moist Tallet to the judge?

88 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:57 pm

[81] Diane is right. 10.17(b):

If the pitcher whose team assumes a lead while such pitcher is in the game, or during the inning on offense in which such pitcher is removed from the game, and does not relinquish such lead, is a starting pitcher who has not completed

(1) five innings of a game that lasts six or more innings on defense, or

(2) four innings of a game that lasts five innings on defense,

then the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the relief pitcher, if there is only one relief pitcher, or the relief pitcher who, in the official scorer’s judgment was the most effective, if there is more than one relief pitcher.

89 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:58 pm

[79] I stand corrected.
I wonder if I just made up the attribution to Dorothy Parker.

90 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:58 pm

[88]

no ... I think I'm wrong ... I think I read that as Logan (or another reliever) would get the win.

91 The Hawk   ~  Sep 3, 2010 2:59 pm

Good lord. 76 pitches and done.

92 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 3, 2010 3:00 pm

Boone Logan when he played for the Lancaster Cheese Mongers:

http://images.quickblogcast.com/2/6/2/7/4/156627-147262/booneLogan.bmp

93 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 3:01 pm

[90] No, Ivan would (have), because it would have been a game that lasted five innings on defense but not six inning on defense. So, (1) does not apply, because the game wouldn't have lasted long enough. And (2) does not apply, because Ivan had completed four innings.

So since neither applies, he would be eligible for the W after all.
But damn, that is worded in the most confusing possible way.

94 Yankee Mama   ~  Sep 3, 2010 3:01 pm

Wow and to think I almost missed an afternoon of malapropisms!

95 Just Fair   ~  Sep 3, 2010 3:07 pm

I wonder if I just made up the attribution to Dorothy Parker.

Supposedly it was a response to Parker saying "Men never make passes/ at girls who wear glasses."

I think it's a fairly common confusion.

If you google "dorothy parker candy is dandy" the 4th hit is a tweet from Roger Ebert tweeting: 'Dorothy Parker's birthday. "Candy is dandy. But liquor is quicker."'

The 5th hit is everybody responding to the tweet to tell him it was Nash, not Parker.

114 RIYank   ~  Sep 3, 2010 3:23 pm

Yanks record

From 8/1 to 8/16: 6-9.

From 8/17 to 9/3: 13-4

It feels nice to have basically clinched the wild card.

I know the sox have a mathematical chance but with 27 games to go for the Yanks and 28 for the sox, if the Yanks went 12-15 (.444) the sox would have to go 21-7 (.750) just to tie. And with each passing day their chances dwindle.

The more interesting question is whether the Yanks can build the lead to 3 games over Tampa by the time we head to Texas on 9/10.

My son missed all of the game. I texted him this:

"Mo pitched the 9th."

It's slightly misleading in this case, but he'll get the gist.
