Ivan Nova tries to stay souped-up against that formidable talent, Brandon Morrow this afternoon in the Bronx.
The weatherman says a big storm might blow into town. Jays in town for three day games.
Never mind the picnic, Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

for the longest time I was anti- jerseys with the name on the back, but it kinda is hard to ignore the fact that they usually run about $60 cheaper than the authentics...just sayin
How does the weather look?
We have very serious rainage right now in Southern New England. Sheets and buckets.
Not liking it so far.
this is 2nd time Jays have seen Nova within 2 weeks ...
Open your friggin mouth, blue!
Okay, I'm liking it a little more now.
Cash them, sluggers!
Man, you almost feel bad for the kid.
Teeny tiny strike zone today, huh?
[7] b.o.o.h.o.o.
Yikes, Curtis. That was WAY TOO CLOSE.
Atta boy, Teix.
[8] Not on that fastball to Teixeira! Half a foot outside, called a strike.
Oooh. However, I forgive Cederstrom.
I hate Sterling .... it is high it is far ... it is .... OFF THE WALL ...
I wonder if they'll IBB Robbie.
Nope. But veerrrry careful, I bet.
Rob could have walked.
I hope Jorgie is willing to walk.
Oh, come on. That's really infuriating. Ball four, Jorge. Dammit.
[15] and berkman swinging early. i don't get it...
[16] I don't blame Berkman -- that pitch looked fat. But Rob and Jorgie let Morrow off the hook, and there's a decent chance that he'll find his groove and go six or seven strong innings now. Grrrr.
Ah. The strike zone is a little to one side today.
Cederstrom is consistent, at least.
Just got back from working a gig in Maine. I logged in and commented while I was there, but Wordpress refused to recognize my comments. Just as well, as I would have only talked about how nice Maine is; too bad it's in Red Sox territory.
[17] yeah gameday had it as a strike.
[12] In this case, at least he didn't exactly make a mistake. It was high and far and off the wall. I'm surprised it wasn't caught.
It's Molina. Go after him!
Cool, what part of Maine?
Ouch.
[23] Portland. I drove up through the Maine Turnpike; I had a dream some time ago about those trees, and now I know why. Smells nice up there, too. My brother-in-law promises to lead us around Acadia on another trip.
Awesome. Atta boy, Curtis!
Candy is sweet ... but Grandy is DANDY!!!
Wow, what a crappy slide from Gardner.
Good thing it didn't matter.
i like GRANDY!!!
[27] Grandy is dandy, but liquor is quicker >;)
[30] i like how you're quoting Ozzy! ; )
a-wella-wella-wella welcome back!
Nova Scotia!
[31] Ogden Nash FTW!
Jo Po is on the bases, cue the calliope music!!!
If it hits your glove you should catch it.
E9.
[33] john michael osbourne! : p
That was a fucking horrible ab, Austin. Bollocks!
el nino! ~
2 out ribbies get you into baseball heaven.
One day, we have a $50,000,000 left side of the infield.
One day, we have a $800,000 left side of the infield.
[30] Pot is not.
c'mon an' clear dem bases, lil' g
Sterling is singing again. What did we do wrong?
bollocks.
still, it's a nice lead for now and morrow has thrown a lot of pitches for 3 innings (71)
[42] he did clear them... sort of...
[33] Dorothy Parker, baby.
Another day at the park. It's early, but the Yanks seem to be cruising along.
The most empty seats I've seen this year at the stadium.
Time to move the game along to make it official.
They're playing like there's Nova Morrow ....
{47] Oops, I spoketh too sooneth.
Well that's not good.
Settle down, Ivan.
[40] As long as they can make plays, I don't care if the the whole infield is making minimum wage...
[51] I'd play at Yankee Stadium for free! I might even make a play or two.
well, this inning is not going well...
[52] Now that's just crazy talk...
Don't get schmeered Nova...
If Ivan pitched for the Angels, mound conferences would be held in Nova Scioscia.
[56] I think Mike might even run out there just for the Halifax.
[56] Boooo comment of the day oooooo!
Wasn't Nova routinely throwing 95-97 mph fast balls the other two games?
[56] Nova Scioscia conference, wasn't that a summit meeting between Nixon and Kosygin?
For Toronto, when Brandon gets relieved, the coach will come out to Morrow ...
That Mussina replay makes me sick to my stomach.
[56], [57] I can nada believe those puns.
[60] I certainly remember Trot, but who is "Kosygin"?
[61] You don't wanna tell me the pitcher's name today?
no tally against tallet
Rain delay at US Open right now ... so it won't be long till it hits the Bronx?
[64] i'll gladly pay you tuesday for a veggie burger today!
If the Blue Jays hit some home runs, the Yankees are really going to regret leaving all those base runners in the early innings when they had Morrow on the ropes.
Sorry. I felt someone had to say that.
let's get 3 quick outs.
thank you, please!
[64] He played on the Mariner farm team in Siberia.
[65]
Comment Tallet vous?
[66] I dunno, I guess it will take the 7 and change in Grand Central. Could take a while.
[68] That's what I like about you RI, amongst the levity you bring the banter in focus. Yes, the Yankees should be laughing by now. Instead we have a ballgame. One more out and it's offical, then let it rain in buckets for the rest of the day.
[72]
hmm ... I wonder how the rain swipes its Metrocard?
Let the kid pitch for Mo's sake. Ugh.
[73] Heh, you don't know me quite as well as you think you do. That was semi-humor, in fact. Or intended to be.
[74] Lightning quick.
The strike zone isn't so consistent after all.
Big batter here.
Come on, let the wookie win!
[77]
Its just Girardi being Girardi.
[46] No, Ogden Nash.
If you want a win, Rook, don't shit the bed in the 5th.
Hey .... Nova can still get win if they get Overbay here, then rain ends game after 4 and a half, right?
[74] or...with a thunderous blow!
[73] I would say his is more brevity than anything else, which certainly gives us depth...
[81] I believe he has to complete five innings to get the win. Ironically, if Blooney gets the out, and then the game is called, he would get the win facing one batter.
You're all wrong. I was quoting Ozzy Ozbourne quoting Willy Wonka quoting Ogden Nash...
If Brian ever get arrested it would be Tallet to the judge.
[86] If he got caught in the rain, would they bring a moist Tallet to the judge?
[81] Diane is right. 10.17(b):
[79] I stand corrected.
I wonder if I just made up the attribution to Dorothy Parker.
[88]
no ... I think I'm wrong ... I think I read that as Logan (or another reliever) would get the win.
Good lord. 76 pitches and done.
Boone Logan when he played for the Lancaster Cheese Mongers:
http://images.quickblogcast.com/2/6/2/7/4/156627-147262/booneLogan.bmp
[90] No, Ivan would (have), because it would have been a game that lasted five innings on defense but not six inning on defense. So, (1) does not apply, because the game wouldn't have lasted long enough. And (2) does not apply, because Ivan had completed four innings.
So since neither applies, he would be eligible for the W after all.
But damn, that is worded in the most confusing possible way.
Wow and to think I almost missed an afternoon of malapropisms!
For Fuck's sake. Get the hell out of this inning. How many runners has Jorge allowed to advance in the last week? 10?
YEAH!!! *huge* out right there.
That was a fastball for real, McCoy.
Attaboy.
That out was worth almost 10% Win Expectancy.
[96] Yes it was! All I could add was a little quantification.
Hand Sanitizer Keychain Day ... what will they think of next?
[97]
LOL .... no "Bones" about it.
Nunez's swing is like an out of control helicopter.
Ladies and gentlemen, Brett Gardner!
You the Man, Curtis! He's coming on big time.
[103] ... and his pal, Curtis!
2 more runs, 2 more extra base hits from grandy.
me likey!
Ohhhhh.
Why not just ask Rob to come over to the opposing dugout and slap him across the face?
[100] Brian Tallet Appreciation Day ;)
Having Granderson now is like Cashman made a great trade... bad Granderson for good Granderson. Hard not to give Kevin Long major props.
The Real McCoy & No Bone Movies
i love it when McCoy Tyner & Ozzy Osbourne come together on the same thread! : )
Oh, Rob. Now everyone will walk Teixeira.
[102] He's the Mark Jackson of baseball?
I wonder if I just made up the attribution to Dorothy Parker.
Supposedly it was a response to Parker saying "Men never make passes/ at girls who wear glasses."
I think it's a fairly common confusion.
If you google "dorothy parker candy is dandy" the 4th hit is a tweet from Roger Ebert tweeting: 'Dorothy Parker's birthday. "Candy is dandy. But liquor is quicker."'
The 5th hit is everybody responding to the tweet to tell him it was Nash, not Parker.
[110] Brett reached third while McCoy was reaching fourth.
Yeah, that was the best I could do. McCoy is my favorite. ("Reaching Fourth" and "The Greeting", I can't decide which.)
Joey's going with a relief pitcher for 1+. Holy smokes.
Tight strike zone. Me no likey.
[114] a picardy third and a perfect fourth. but don't you dare use parallel fifths!!!
Uh, Dave. Lame.
Sigh.
Oh, Dave. Dave Dave Dave.
get him outta there...
Robertson was in nibblin' mode.
Its just the Blue Jay Way ...
[117] I wouldn't think of it. I'm not yer Messien-Debussy French type.
[122] Please don't be very long...
ya know, i'm really glad we got kerry wood...
i guess it's jobber for teh eighth. unless, kerry begins it...
[119] I had to step away, what did he do?
Whew.
I ♥ KW.
[125] Walked a couple.
[124]
There's a guy upon the hill
He throws balls against his will
And his coach is out to say
This is not the Blue Jay Way ....
[128] Thanks
Oh, sorry, [128] → [126].
Casey Janssen better ... watch your speed ... trouble ahead ... your team's behind ...
McCoy Tyner, Ozzie and now The Grateful Dead. A most interesting thread.
[133] Don't forget the Beatles
Catch of the game
NotPastaDivingNunez!
don't forget Debussy also!
i have cd's from all these artists in my collection! : )
[134] Ah yes. Not to mention the writers; Dorothy Parker and Ogden Nash. Who am I missing?
kerry kicking all kindsa ass!
Oh and Messiaen too.
Norwegian Wood!
For Yes watchers. I would go to the dog show, and want to drink a beer. So FU Miller High Life.
[142] Would you make a portrait of your dog?
Wasn't there an expensive, socially awkward player on this team who used to hit home runs? Do we miss him?
[144] I miss his off-the-field antics......not!
[143] I would and have taken a photograph of her.
Rob doesn't want to go home yet.
I just noticed that Cito has been touching up that mustache.
You hit it hard, Robbie. Tomorrow'll be your day. It's amazing today's outcome looks good considering the injuries, slumps, struggles, resting, rookies, etc.etc...
[149] The Genius of Girardi...
Thanks be to Mo.
i love you, Mo!!!
Yikes.
All rise.
Lucky 7!
Mo tried to hog that one, good thing he didn't get hurt.
The Jays knew that Mariano needed work, and dammit, they were determined not to let him get it.
It's funny, no team seems intimidating this year. I'm not saying that Yankees have a lock, and I'm sure that the playoffs will be pressure packed, but this year the team seems settled even with all the issues. Crazy.
Yanks record
From 8/1 to 8/16: 6-9.
From 8/17 to 9/3: 13-4
It feels nice to have basically clinched the wild card.
I know the sox have a mathematical chance but with 27 games to go for the Yanks and 28 for the sox, if the Yanks went 12-15 (.444) the sox would have to go 21-7 (.750) just to tie. And with each passing day their chances dwindle.
The more interesting question is whether the Yanks can build the lead to 3 games over Tampa by the time we head to Texas on 9/10.
My son missed all of the game. I texted him this:
"Mo pitched the 9th."
It's slightly misleading in this case, but he'll get the gist.
