Hit the Bricks Pal and Beat It (Boom Bap Remix)

The Yanks have lost four straight, seven of their last eight. They’ve been back-and-forth with the Rays for first place all season, a steady give-and-take, a dance. Now, the Rays are up by a half-game. But unless something horrible happens (the Red Sox trail the Yanks by seven games for the wildcard), they are both making the playoffs.

Tonight gives Matt Garza against the kid Nova, in his biggest test yet. Should be fun. I see the Bombers scoring some runs–don’t know if they’ll haul in the Score Truck, but more than enough to win.

Time to get back to the business of being in business.

Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

We take back first place and best record tonight.

Ok, so who is and isn't available on the Bronx Banter bench today? I've posted three of the last four days, so I may have to take this one off.

Just lovely Derek, just lovely ...

4 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:14 pm

I think maybe Curtis should work with Kevin Long every day ...

Now, for the love of Jeebus, CASH HIM IN!

5 Just Fair   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:14 pm

Nice rip, Curtis. Now try and steal third. ; )

6 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:15 pm

hit against the shift Mark. We need a run.

7 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:16 pm

Ah, so that's why Teix has been struggling.

Broken toes suck.

8 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:18 pm

[7] Why has he been playing? I thought we were losing battles to win the war?

9 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:19 pm

Frak.

10 Raf   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:21 pm

I'm a bit surprised that Granderson hasn't gotten more time @ leadoff, TBH

[7] The ways of the Chessmaster are above my paygrade ...

12 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:24 pm

Wonder if Crawford beats that out anyway even if Tex gloved it.

13 Raf   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:26 pm

Personally, if an umpire shows a bs strike zone, I think he should be called on it. Getting tossed for arguing balls and strikes is poppycock.

14 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:30 pm

Ya know how they have those styrofoam 'cup holders'... ya put yer beer in to keep it cold? They usually have all kinds of clever shit written on 'em?

Alex... how about you get some that are Vodka bottle size.... have 'Bronx Bnter Courage' written on them, and sell them to us?

I could really use something like that.

And Nova excaped the 1st.
Is Mitre warmed up yet?

15 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:33 pm

Yikes... I learn about the broken toe here?
From ESPN:
"Since the injury, Teixeira has been homerless, while batting just .209 (9-for-43) entering Tuesday's game with the Tampa Rays."

Well... I guess Girardi does know some things we don't know.

16 Raf   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:35 pm

[15] Then why is he playing?

17 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:37 pm

[14] excaped? I like that spelling.

18 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:38 pm

[16] Yeah, and why does it take so long for guys who are seriously slumping to go see Kevin Long, who just tells them something simple and gets immediate results?

19 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:39 pm

[17] Retired superheroes, I'm telling you...

20 Just Fair   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:40 pm

Runs. Who the fuck needs runs?

21 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:40 pm

Ah, these are the Yankees innings I've come to know and love recently ...

Awesome start.

22 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:48 pm

He looked awfully close to safe at second. Man, that play took a long time to develop.

23 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:50 pm

Oh that's real helpful. You know, I could be doing some woodworking.

24 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:52 pm

Wow. Cano abd Grandy are our only 2 starters who are (appear to be?) healthy.

Healthy Guy #2 gets big hit.

26 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:57 pm

Well, we scored ... that's something, right?

27 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 7:59 pm

It was deliberate, ump. Don't give the Rays any close calls tonight.

28 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 8:02 pm

Whaddayaknow with the 2-run tater? 大好き!

38 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 8:36 pm

[34] He's real enough that he should have been taking starts from Mitre and Moseley all year.

More than that, it's too early to say.

He's got enough stuff to be a decent 4/5 guy, though it'll be interesting to see how the league reacts as they see more of him. Not a lot of deception in the motion.

39 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 14, 2010 8:37 pm

Another tater!! 喜ぶ!!

40 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 14, 2010 8:44 pm

Dang, get all caughtup in Photoshop and good times start to roll. I love Photoshop!

41 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 14, 2010 8:50 pm

Were those strikes as low as Gamecast implied? (halfway off the chart low)...

42 Just Fair   ~  Sep 14, 2010 8:59 pm

How the hell do we know when Nova's tired when he's always lifted between 5 and 6 innings and 70 pitches. OY!

43 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:03 pm

Goddammit Nova, quit FUCKING around and get this out.

44 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:05 pm

53 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:11 pm

[49] I think it's just a mental thing. He's got the stuff, he just needs to forget what the inning is.

54 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:12 pm

Well, this whole inning sure went to SHIT.

Guess I should apologize to Girardi for getting pissed he didn't use Logan for more batters last night.

Le sigh ...

55 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:12 pm

Score truck got hijacked.

56 monkeypants   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:13 pm

What a revoltin' development.

57 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:14 pm

[53] Or maybe it's the last part of what I said ... he doesn't have much deception and batters start reading what he's throwing a LOT better the 2nd or 3rd time around.

Still, it's disappointing he keeps hitting the same wall around the 5-6 inning ...

58 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:14 pm

Holy shit what a kick in the stones. Yanks are still winning this one, dammit.

59 monkeypants   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:18 pm

57) whatever the issue, it was clear he had lost it...I would have yanked him a couple of batters sooner. Not that it would have mattered when the BP explodes, too.

60 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:25 pm

[57] Could be, in which case I think he'd be a fine addition to the bullpen.

61 randym77   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:26 pm

Ivan Nova had a kind of odd route to the big leagues. He was signed in 2004, and by 2008, was still in A-ball. The Yanks left him unprotected, and he was taken in the Rule 5 draft by the Padres. They returned him to the Yankees...and he just zoomed through the system. Not sure why, though there have been juicing allegations.

He's still very young, especially for a pitcher. I don't think the Yanks will leave him off the roster again.

62 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:27 pm

Robbie for the tie!

63 JeremyM   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:28 pm

64 monkeypants   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:29 pm

65 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:29 pm

Well, the boys have got the fight in 'em tonite, that's a good sign at least ...

66 Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:29 pm

Chad Qualls?? I want the SCORE TRUCK!

67 JeremyM   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:32 pm

Come on Kearns.

68 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:32 pm

Not sure why, though there have been juicing allegations.

Just because two lads from South-of-the-Border happened to innocently give each other B-12 injections without their team or trainers knowing about it, some people just gotta start lobbing the Scarlett Letter "S" around ... sheesh, what *is* the world coming to?

Meanwhile, Austin Kearn's carriage has turned back into a pumpkin ...

69 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:33 pm

Wasted opportunity.

70 JeremyM   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:34 pm

Nice work Kearns. Piece of garbage. And even better Curtis. Hope that cortisone shot works for Swish.

71 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:35 pm

Whole damn game could be Kearns missing that fat 0-2 piece of shit.

72 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:37 pm

Girardi left him in way too long.

73 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:40 pm

howdy folks .... just got in .... seems like we have a football score ... anyone get injured tonight?

74 Chyll Will   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:42 pm

75 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:43 pm

This team is in a lot of trouble.

76 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:45 pm

So now the Yankees can't hit Chad Qualls.

77 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:47 pm

George Steinbrenner is rolling over in his grave

78 randym77   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:53 pm

[72] He did. I think he was trying to get the kid a W.

79 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:56 pm

[78] I think it was a response to pulling him too early last time.

80 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:58 pm

Now that's the Joba I know.

81 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:58 pm

Onions!

82 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:59 pm

According to Mark Feinsand....

Andy Pettitte after his 5-inning start for Trenton: "I feel like it's time that I need to get in a big-league game and get going up there."

83 rbj   ~  Sep 14, 2010 9:59 pm

[73] Our hope for a nice easy win.

84 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 14, 2010 10:00 pm

[71] Or Jeter striking out against a kid who couldn't throw a strike.

I wonder if Girardi getting the bullpen up as soon as he got into trouble unnerved Nova. Sometimes panic can be contagious.

85 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 14, 2010 10:01 pm

ARod goes yard I say.

86 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 14, 2010 10:02 pm

That was the pitch, fuck.

87 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 10:02 pm

[78] On the YES broadcast it was clear that Girardi would have taken Nova out 1 batter before he eventually did, but Tony Pena convinced him to give him one more batter.

Lord knows Coffee Joe has done no right in the last week in my eyes when it comes to managing his bullpen, but I don't really have a problem with him trying to nurse Nova through 5 tonite.

88 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 14, 2010 10:04 pm

I have been reluctant to log on and read the comments here. It's been a very shiity sports week for me (save the NY Football Giants), my football pool is a mess in just the first week, and the Yankees are in the corn field.

Just like that, hoping that the wookie would win, the Rays put up a 7 spot...a three run HR from Aybar? What BS. But I would have left Nova in too long too, and Boone threw a cookie.

The Yanks must win this game, it ends here. I just can't take it no more...

89 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 14, 2010 10:04 pm

This is not good.

90 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 14, 2010 10:06 pm

The Yankees NEED to score in the ninth and win in regulation. Any situation that causes Joe Girardi to think has very little upside.

91 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 14, 2010 10:07 pm

At lease Joba represented himself well.

92 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 14, 2010 10:08 pm

93 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 10:10 pm

So much for Girardi's rule about not using relievers if they've been hot in three of four games. Wood has now pitched in 4 of 5.

Well, Golson is in for defense in right, even though he looks totally over-matched out there and lets people tag up from first. No new tricks for the old dog Girardi....

Michael Kay repeating the Yankees talking points on yesterday's debacle makes me even angrier.

Great throw... but OFers these days don't set up properly to throw.

[179] Maybe they've signed him already...hmmm?

194 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:08 pm

What on earth was Crawford thinking? How do you make that mistake the day after Gardner's bone-headed play?

That throw was amazing. As a former outfielder, that kind of throw sends a shiver up my spine.

I guess I'll take people's word that leaving Nova in wasn't crazy. I skipped the first seven innings, and for once, checked in on the good part of the night. Looking at the play by play, it sure looked like there was a spot at 6-3 where I would have brought in Robertson and said dammit, this shit stops now. Particularly after saving everyone for this game. But only if you actually, you know, want to win the division. Which I don't give a fig about for reasons of hanging meaningless banners, but because I think any opponent is going to be tough as heck, and YS is a big advantage in the PS. YS in the PS, I like that.

But it sounds like watching it live it didn't seem like a terrible move.

I'm glad tonight worked out. When Crawford reached, I was ready to go apoplectic again.

195 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:17 pm

That was some last inning. Longoria was a hair off on the bat for a walk off two run homer. Mo looked as nervous as Joe G. felt., Crawford out at third. 99.5% of the time, he makes it, was it a mistake for him to tag?

196 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:19 pm

Okay, now that we're safe, who else was sure Longoria won it off the bat?

197 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:19 pm

Wow... I just finished watching the game. First Posada's blast, and then Golson! I actually don't think that was that bad a play by Crawford. Sure, it's a cardinal sin and all, but did anyone in the entire park, anyone watching, actually expect Golson to come up with a laser like that? That was a one-in-a-million play, and Crawford just had the misfortune of getting caught up in it.

Damn, first place feels good.

198 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:19 pm

[195] Absolutely.

What does being on 3rd (rather than 2nd) gain him with 2 out?

How often does Mo throw a wild pitch?

199 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:22 pm

[197] I suppose the answer is ... what's the percentage of hits that Crawford *wouldn't* score from 2nd with 2 outs on vs those he would if was on 3rd + the chances of a WP/PB/Balk scoring him from 3rd as well.

I'm not sure of that answer (mathmatically), but generally speaking, if that's the case, why, Why, WHY risk it?

200 Hank Waddles   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:23 pm

[198] How often does Mo hit a batter with the bases loaded? I think Crawford did the right thing. A wild pitch isn't the only thing that could've scored him from third; even an infield single would've plated him. His only fault was that he didn't know what Golson was packing out there.

201 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:25 pm

[199] Madden just said, that he wanted Crawford to take that risk. If the throw hits him and bounces away he can score. "Against Rivera we have to take risks"

202 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:25 pm

[200] See 199.

If the difference between what I said in 199 is > than the chance of Golson throwing him out ... it was a bad play.

And ...If you don't know ... it's a bad play.

It was a bad play.

203 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:27 pm

[201] And that's a reasonable decision.

I disagree with the comparative risk/reward assessment, but, as they say ... that's basebaal.

204 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:28 pm

[196] I watched Longoria hit that with the sound off. Granderson kept retreating, retreating, before it was clear to me that he had room. I definitely had a suddenly sick feeling watching the ball off his bat.

[199] And I have to believe the math says don't go. It was a shock laser strike, but you also have to add the percentage of the time you might get thrown out to your math in the initial equation.

205 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:29 pm

[202] I should change that to, I think it's a bad (i.e. likely a poor outcome respective of the risk involved) play.

206 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:29 pm

[204] Yeah, I added that in 202

=)

207 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:31 pm

[206] Or something like that ... at least I meant to add that point in [202]

208 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:32 pm

[201] Maddon is so full of shit. Of course, he believes fervently in his own image of the go, go , go Rays.

The reason the Rays fanbase hates him is that over 162 games they see through his bullshit and the smoke he blows up his own rear end. There are times I'm pretty sure "the image of Joe Maddon" is what's paramount in his calculations.

I've said it before - Maddon wins because they have a lot of good players. I wanted them to punish him for bringing in Lance Cormier, and was annoyed at them for letting Cormier look so good.

209 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:33 pm

[206,7] There you go. I think you pretty much had it with 206 ; 0

210 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:34 pm

I meant [202] (shakes head at own dumbness...).

211 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:39 pm

[208] Crawford does not look to the bench for the green light on that play, so you can't say Maddon called it. He just said he supports Crawford on it. And, if he is that unpopular in TB, and eventually leaves, Maddon will have a multiple choice of teams who will want him.

212 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 14, 2010 11:57 pm

While getting thrown out at 3rd with 2 outs is a cardinal sin, that doesn't mean you never try. It means you only try when the odds are heavily... HEAVILY in your favor. And frankly, after watching that play 3 times, it's a near miracle that we threw him out. I'm guessing Carl makes that 95 times out of 100, maybe more.... and that justifies the play.

And did anyone notice the pick-up by ARod? It was more then a sort hop, but less then an inbetween hop. It was a tough play, and I think ARod was very surprised at the outcome. A very nice pick.

213 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 15, 2010 12:06 am

[211] I'm not suggesting he called it, I'm suggesting his "I'm Joe Maddon and I never blink" BS is behind his unhesitating endorsement.

I dislike him the same way I dislike Scioscia. You didn't reinvent the game just because they gave you a bunch of guys who throw high 90's and a lineup with nothing but guys who can beat you. Those Angels teams that tormented us were stacked. I never felt it was Scioscia beating us, but the stacked lineup, team speed, and nasty bullpen that took all those games.
