Sometimes You Just Gotta Cut a Piece For Yourself

Such was the poignant wisdom of my old college chum, Lomain. That was his line, right out of “The Pope of Greenwich Village,” ‘cept out of Bayside, Queens. This is Beef Lomain I’m talking about, the eldest Lomain. His brother Mikey was Chicken Lomain and his little brother Matty was Shrimp Lomain.

I’d like to see A.J. take a piece for himself tonight, wouldn’t you?

Why mince words? Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

Wow, I am really hungry now.

Here's another entertaining item ('another' because I'm thinking of this as follow-up on the Papelbon tidbit I tossed this afternoon).

Of JD Drew's 20 home runs this season, 15 have been solos. Red Sox Nation considers this to be evidence of what a lousy, lazy, ungritty player JD is.

Oh, also: in a combined 20 innings this month, Dan Bard and Jonathan Papelbon have given up 15 runs. 27 hits and 10 walks.

Looks like the Yankees off season just got more expensive:

The Rangers, cash-strapped for years with owner Tom Hicks, have signed a 20-year extension with Fox Sports Southwest that will guarantee them $3 billion. It’s the highest TV package for a team that doesn’t own its own channel.

Yes, that’s $150 million a year before even playing a game, plenty enough to re-sign ace Cliff Lee, bring in free-agent outfielder Carl Crawford, or whoever else they wish.

In comparison, the Dodgers make about $45 million a year off their TV deal with Fox.

I'm so happy after last night that I can even stomach an AJ Burnett appearance.

4 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:08 pm

What the fuck was that?

5 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:09 pm

That was the funniest thing I've seen all year. Great way to start the game. WIth a joke. When do yo usee that? ANd then SIngy goes, "I don't think I've ever seen that before. Not to start a game."

And that's why we watch, right?@?!?

6 rbj   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:10 pm

Pity we didn't have anyone on base, cause that would have been a balk.

7 Sliced Bread   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:10 pm

my mom is from Bayside. Can't remember which street, but it's a nice one near the train station. Did the Lomains live on Column A Avenue, near Chef's House Delights Plaza?

8 rbj   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:14 pm

#30 tonight, A-Rod.

9 Sliced Bread   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:19 pm

thanks, folks. you've been a great audience. I'll be here all week. Try the duck.

10 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:19 pm

The cameras in the Skydome have always been funky.

11 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:24 pm

Burnett should be left in to pitch the entire game, regardless of how he does. Whats the worst that could happen - he throws 200 pitches and is never able to pitch again? Perhaps thats really the best that could happen.

12 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:26 pm

I just can't give the MVP to Hamilton

13 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:33 pm

Come on guys, beat this guy for everything he's done to torment Superman. http://tinyurl.com/22b2pn

14 rbj   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:33 pm

LOL. We get to hear the umps.

15 rbj   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:40 pm

I have a sneaky suspicion this is going to be a long night.

16 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:46 pm

This team still sucks.

Granderson did an absolutely fantasssssstic job in that at bat with 1st and 3rd, one out.

Did anyone actually think they were going to score there?

I have come to the point that I despise watching AJ's Bitch Show out on the mound.

He is so gutless, it's pathetic. He's like Jeff Weaver, with stuff.

And mlb.tv keeps doubling and tripling up with that insanely annoying pro glide ad. That actor needs a broken face.

Yeah, I can see why I thought it would be relaxing to catch a ballgame.

17 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:47 pm

Very nice, guys. This guy is making you look ridiculous. And he's Mark Ryhtirrufgdfwrdcv[jheerweww.

18 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:47 pm

I dislike hearing that whiny ass Omar Vizquel is on the top of any list.

Also, I hope to got we don't see anyone that throws a changeup in the playoffs.

19 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:48 pm

[17] He's throwing a changeup.

20 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:49 pm

After Granderson's big hit to start things off last night, I'm having trouble getting mad at him- although I HATE seeing all these runners stranded on third.

21 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:49 pm

He's a WIZAAAAARD.

You know, if Girardi really wanted to keep the guys rested, they could have stayed home.

This trip to Toronto looks pointless.

22 rbj   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:49 pm

The hitters do realize they haven't clinched anything yet, right?

23 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:50 pm

Yeesh.

[18} Edwar Ramirez would run wild on the Yanks!

24 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:51 pm

You can do better, honey

25 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:52 pm

Unbelievable.

[19] How in the world would he not, as a lefty, have figured that out in his first two outings against this team???

Btw, I haven't wanted to say this because Granderson has had some big hits recently, but I could swear that for the last three weeks his swing has looked as long to me as it was at its worst. That swing looks long, and if he's supposed to be quiet at the plate, why is he moving his hands all over the bat like he's playing a flute?

The only thing I can see that is from the "new" approach may be that he's starting with the bat back.

26 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:52 pm

[23] The Yankees have never managed a hit off Edwar

27 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:54 pm

Lead off walk.

Yep, AJ's headed in the right direction.

He is GARBAGE.

28 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:54 pm

Christ AJ Burnett sucks.

29 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:54 pm

I wanna see some Brackman!

30 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:54 pm

And plunks a batter. He's a disgrace.

31 RIYank   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:55 pm

Is there any realistic chance that we can leave Burnett out of the post-season rotation?

32 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:55 pm

Burnett, thanks for 2009. Now go jump in a lake.

33 RIYank   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:56 pm

It's always a good idea to give free passes to the two batters before Bautista.

34 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:56 pm

[31] I don't know how we can afford to keep him IN the post-season rotation. He's terrible.

35 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:57 pm

[37] Hell, even his 2009 contributions are overrated IMO.

36 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:57 pm

Maybe Burnett can be crossing the street just as Braylon Edwards is driving home...

37 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:57 pm

Fucking Burnett.

Well, we'll always have 2009 ...

38 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:58 pm

Three more years of this shit.

39 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:58 pm

[35] I know it, but his one start against Philly was pretty big at the time.

40 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:58 pm

Get this feckless piece of shit out of here. Send him out in Toronto with a bus ticket.

He sucks and he's a coward.

41 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:58 pm

[35] Wow, you replied to the future ... from the past!

Far out, man, far out!

42 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:59 pm

[35] [37] How did you know he was going to post that? :)

AJ, f-ck off.

43 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:59 pm

[39] And game five was a putrid mess.

44 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:59 pm

I HATE AJ BURNETT

45 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 7:59 pm

Could you imagine how we'd be feeling right now if we hadn't WON last night???

46 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:00 pm

I don't like AJ Burnett Michael.

47 rbj   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:00 pm

A long night.

And we night as well pencil in AJ's post season starts as losses.

48 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:00 pm

I'd pull him right now. No need to save the bullpen, bring out the flotsam and jetsam and let AJ stew.

49 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:00 pm

[43] Yes it was, hence the "one game" :)

50 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:01 pm

GODDAMMIT, GET THAT PIECE OF SHIT OUT OF THERE!

Moseley, Mitre, Sanchez, Brackman ... the FUCKING BALL BOY ... who FUCKING CARES!?!?!?

GET.

HIM.

OUT.

51 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:01 pm

Sad. Maybe AJ can quit baseball. It's sad how desperately we would all love for him to do that.

52 RIYank   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:01 pm

Are you ready for some football???

53 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:01 pm

[49] And I think game five cancels it out.

54 rbj   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:02 pm

At this point, I would rather take a chance with Nova.

55 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:03 pm

I know why he can't get people out Kenny. AJ Burnett is an immature little fuck that never learned how to pitch and has decided that the answer to everything is throwing his pin straight fastball as hard as he can, despite the fact that he never has anything resembling a clue as to where its going.

56 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:03 pm

In the bathroom. So….. what’s the score?

57 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:04 pm

I repeat, three more years of this shit.

58 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:04 pm

[56] A lot to a little.

59 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:07 pm

[55] Is Jeff Weaver with some stuff really that far off?

60 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:07 pm

Way to use AAAAAALL the ballpark their Alby ...

61 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:07 pm

"poor Alby."

We should call up a whole bunch of the has beens and never wases from AAA to face him so he can be more comfortable.

62 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:08 pm

On the bright side, we should see Brackman today.

63 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:09 pm

[59] Jeff Weaver has some semblance of control.

64 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:11 pm

Holy mother of Christ.

65 rbj   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:12 pm

Good night folks.

66 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:13 pm

Contact!

67 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:14 pm

I'd send AJ home for the year tonight. Maybe it would send a message that his brand of garbage is unacceptable.

If George hadn't died earlier this season, watching AJ deliver his season-summarizing "Ode to a Steaming Turd" would have surely put him in the grave.

It's particularly frustrating to watch the suck show of guys who formerly gave the Yankees fits. This is very reminiscent of one of RJ's meatball platters.

68 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:17 pm

Before the playoffs Kevin Long needs to work on this team and teach them how to hit changeups. It doesn't even have to be a good changeup. It doesn't have to be changing up off of anything. The Yankees just can't hit 85 mph slop.

69 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:21 pm

Stop walking guys before Bautista.

Thank God they won last night. I honestly felt that if they lost that game, it was going to be2004 all over again- except worse.

70 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:22 pm

Red Sox are winning. BTW

71 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:28 pm

Man, sure wish we'd had *this* Granderson all year!

72 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:29 pm

[71] Well, at least we have him now.

73 Jon DeRosa   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:29 pm

don't worry guys. check out the side bar, if CC doesn't get 'em tomorrow, then we've got, uh, oh no. not him again.

if that's a joke alex, that is pretty friggin hilarious.

74 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:29 pm

Games not over yet boys... Keep clawing and scratching.

75 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:31 pm

[73] LoHud reported that earlier as well :)

76 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:32 pm

Can't we all start a fund to purchase a hit on Burnett and get him out of our lives once and for all? Even the cops would be with us on this one.

77 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:34 pm

Come on Jeter.

78 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:35 pm

So, apparently Granderson has gone yard again.

Which makes my earlier post seem very silly - but does anyone else see all the movement?

Are my eyes playing tricks on me? I mean, he is moving his hands everywhere as he waits for the pitch, isn't he?

79 RIYank   ~  Sep 27, 2010 8:54 pm

[78] Dude. Give me more movement like that.

But I'm watching football now.

80 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:04 pm

I hear ya'. I just wonder if that part of changing things up has been discarded. Maybe all they needed to do was start with the bat back, instead of having him load and swing, in succession.

Looks like everyone has checked out - and why wouldn't they?

81 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:12 pm

# 1 ... that's DAMN good hustle from Jeter, especially in a game down 7-2 that probably doesn't mean anything.

#2 ... please don't do that again and turn your ankle ... please?

82 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:14 pm

7-5 baby!!!

I'll give this team this, as deep a hole as the starters can dig, the bats don't quit trying to fill it in.

83 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:17 pm

They certainly have a knack for not giving up, even when the rest of us have to turn it off to avoid permanent cases of AJ-itis. Have to give them that.

84 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:19 pm

[80] Honestly, when I saw him swing last night I thought it looked very "sleek" for lack of a better word. He seemed to get the bat through the zone very quickly.

85 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:19 pm

Cito Gaston is playing chess now I see.

86 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:20 pm

C'mon Mr. Thames!

87 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:23 pm

88 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:27 pm

Robertson still sux

89 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:27 pm

FRICK-EN LAZER BEAM!!!

90 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:29 pm

I don't think Robertson sucks.

91 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:34 pm

Please die Kearns

92 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:34 pm

Well, you certainly can't spell Kearns .. without a K.

93 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:39 pm

Yo, Jorge, you can't hit a 2-run homer on a 3-0 count, even en espanol.

94 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:46 pm

Thats right, you fucking asshole Girardi, burn out the bullpen in a losing effort - I still say that Burnett should have been left in to pitch the whole game - hopefully either his arm would have fallen off or his chicken-shit hear gave out, but nooooooo, Genius Girardi at work again.

95 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:47 pm

Twins in 3 - and I'm willing to back it with $

96 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:49 pm

Oh Chad Gaudin, how I've missed you.

97 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:50 pm

Your move next, Gaston. The chessmaster has me dizzy right now. Left, right, left, right.

98 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:53 pm

Sure Jeter swing at 2-0

99 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:54 pm

There is something particularly galling about being completely shut down by Kevin Gregg like we have this year

[99] Well, they *are* until this game is over.

102 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:56 pm

Update - right now, Yanks are NOT tied for the division lead.

103 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:56 pm

Is it too late to kill Burnett's mother in the crib?

104 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:56 pm

[102] Oh well. Burnett sucks, we all knew it. Win behind the big guy tomorrow and it won't matter that much

105 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:58 pm

[104] Are you the voice of reason tonight Matt? :)

106 jjmerlock   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:58 pm

Well, that was the old college try.

Thanks, AJ. Outstanding performance.

107 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:58 pm

That is no longer a sure thing

108 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 9:58 pm

[103] No, but it's not to late to start drinking heavily.

As Troy McClure once said, "Ahhhhh, sweet liquor, eases the pain."

109 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 10:00 pm

[105] Last night did wonders for my mood.

110 RIYank   ~  Sep 27, 2010 10:03 pm

Awesome. Cult was screaming for Burnett to be removed (back in the, whatever, second? third?), and mhoward120 was demanding that Burnett be left in, but [108] they can just enjoy a drink together afterward. That's the spirit!

111 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 10:03 pm

[107] Then the Red Sox will lose at some point. We'll be fine.

112 JeremyM   ~  Sep 27, 2010 10:07 pm

[107] Nothing is a sure thing, but CC had one rough game.

113 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 10:08 pm

[112] Well, two of the last four. But I'll still go to war with him.

114 mhoward120   ~  Sep 27, 2010 10:17 pm

Listening to Girardi making excuses for Burnett on the post-game leads me to believe that he must absolutely love being butt-fucked on a daily basis by Burnett - there is NO other possible explanation.

115 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 10:19 pm

Or it could be that you tend not to see managers trashing their players all that often.

116 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 10:20 pm

[110] No ... that's the spiritS!

117 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 10:23 pm

[110] Actually though, after last night, I'm sanguine about the lost game ... I just a) don't need to see AJ Burnett pitch again for a long, long time and b) would love to see Sanchez and Brackman get some innings.

They might suck, but at least they'd be a "different" suck.

118 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 10:28 pm

[117] The Yankees really need to look long and hard into trading him this winter.

119 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 27, 2010 10:55 pm

[118] I wish them luck with that, they're going to need it ...

120 Mattpat11   ~  Sep 27, 2010 11:28 pm

[119] I know. Which means they really might need to take an addition by subtraction stance on this. We've been stuck with terrible signings in recent years because we were concerned with getting "equal value." in a trade. If they come to the conclusion that this team is better off without AJ Burnett, they need to bite the bullet

121 Bruce Markusen   ~  Sep 27, 2010 11:51 pm

Like Vazquez, Burnett is completely clueless. After the game, he talked about "not letting this bother him," that he had pitched well the last two games. Really? Are you that dense?

Performances like this, happening over and over, SHOULD be bothering you.

It's like the fat guy talking to Seinfeld on the subway, saying "I'm not ashamed of my body." And Jerry says, "That's the problem. You should be."
