Interesting. Was listening to the Tiger's pregame on the radio -- Damon is starting tonight, one of about 4-5 players to start for 140+ games for 15 straight years.

One of the others is pretty obvious.

2 rbj   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:08 pm

Hank Aaron is another.

Nick Johnson isn't.

3 rbj   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:13 pm

Good start

4 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:13 pm

Meh. Teixeira should have gone to 2nd on that.

5 Alex Belth   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:15 pm

One run. That's all the big fella will need, but I sense more to come.

6 rbj   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:21 pm

Nice easy inning

7 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:30 pm

I just tuned in. Curtis is on second, on a K??

8 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:30 pm

Where is everybody on Clinch Night?
Alex... maybe less pictures of food and a bit more T&A?

[8] maybe they are at the strip club.

btw i thought mk was wanted in canada or something, what's he doing up there?

10 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:36 pm

I really hope the Yankees aren't planning on popping any corks tonight.

11 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:41 pm

[9] The great boycott is over. Molsen's finally apologized to MK for that flat Golden he drank 14 years ago.

12 ms october   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:43 pm

[11] hahahaha, that's great!

omg swish bunted.

13 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:44 pm

Oh, christ. A play. Goodie.

14 ms october   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:45 pm

so that's what small ball feels like.

15 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:45 pm

Oh, good. Another play.
Well, at least it did get the run in. I feel Girardi is being sarcastic.

16 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:46 pm

I read a tweet that 41 of the last 45 Yankee runs had come via the HR .... or something bizarre like that

17 Diane Firstman   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:47 pm

Small ball is the game of steroid users .... don't do it!

18 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:47 pm

[16] Why, that's horrible! That's scandalous! Disgusting. Not real baseball.

(You can tell what kind of mood I'm in tonight.)

19 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:48 pm

[17] Ohhhhhh....

That's not a good thought.

20 rbj   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:53 pm

Crud.

21 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 7:54 pm

First time against the Jays this year, right? You had to figure one home run. So, that's the one. Glad it was a solo.

22 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:02 pm

We really need to invent some terms for Posada's running plays. He never fails to amaze.

23 ms october   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:06 pm

[22] i missed it - what did he do now?

24 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:15 pm

Bullshit. Safe.

25 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:15 pm

Heh.

William must be in heaven right now. Joe Girardi's brain has been replaced by the spongy Joe Maddon version.

26 rbj   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:16 pm

wowclosecall.

27 rufuswashere   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:17 pm

Yes, Gardner was called safe, but ... correct me if I'm wrong -- is there anyone who's been worse with runners on 3rd and < 2 outs than Jeter this year? One weak infield grounder after another, usually on the 1st or 2nd pitch.

28 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:17 pm

[25] In what regard?

[29] Oh ... THAT Alex.

I was expecting a scantily-clad picture of a rather mannish blonde ...

Especially since we're currently in Toronto!

31 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:23 pm

C.C. ought to be in Vegas .... he's DEALING!

32 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:28 pm

[28] Just the smallball stuff. The plays.

I hope Teixeira isn't a Crappy-in-the-Fall type player every year. I mean, I love the guy, but it would be nice if he could import his July self into October.

33 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:31 pm

Hello,
Welcome to clinch night. I expect it will taste bittersweet. At least the Yanks can light up Cubans.

Two sacrifice fly balls RBIs, a big surprise.

Small ball is order considering the number of DPs the team has hit into.

It will still feel good. Is three enough for CC?

34 rufuswashere   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:31 pm

Another GIDP to first ... jeeze win this game already and get CC some runs!

35 rbj   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:33 pm

Why's Cito arguing? The runner was out of the baseline. Unless he wants one final toss.

36 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:35 pm

Hell, if tomorrow night was *my* last home game and likely one of my *last* games ever as a MLB manager?

I'd get thrown out for shits-n-giggles too ...

37 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:40 pm

[32] I am not a small ball fan. However, I do think the bunt is useful with weak hitters and advocate the squeeze in particular. Bunting with Nick Swisher is not what I had in mind.

38 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:41 pm

[37] What about Teixeira?

39 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:43 pm

[38] What did I miss? Definitely not with Tex either.

40 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:47 pm

[39] He could have squoze instead of that boring sac fly.

I'm actually worried about Teixeira.

41 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:48 pm

[40] That assumes Tex can bunt. I'd rather take my chances on a fly ball. Considering his injruies, I think concern about Tex is warranted, but he seems to be coming around lately.

42 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:53 pm

[41] It's more that he sucked last October, that's what worries me.

43 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:54 pm

It's good to have an ace. It dramatically improves my Quality of Life.

44 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 28, 2010 8:56 pm

47 JeremyM   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:03 pm

Can A-Rod reach 30 the same way he did it last year?

48 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:05 pm

[45] Before last year, that would have been a oxymoron.

49 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:06 pm

[48] Which is why it's funny.

50 seamus   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:06 pm

[55] Salamis, of course.

57 seamus   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:13 pm

nice 4 runs should do it!

58 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:13 pm

Good job, Rob.
Funny, after all the complaining about the lack of sac fly scoring by the Bombers, they plate three this evening by that method.

59 seamus   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:13 pm

ok later folks....

60 rbj   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:14 pm

[54] Yeah. The only problem is that Manny is also in striking distance of the record. And that cannot be allowed.

61 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:15 pm

[55] Career Grand Slams. Arod is two behind, and probably the only one who can catch him.

62 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:21 pm

That is an amazing stat...the Yankee infield has only made 24 errors all year. Now that is something to celebrate. What is that they say...pitching and defense wins championships? 1/2 a loaf is better than nothing.

63 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:24 pm

[62] Plus maybe another 1/8 or so, for CC?
Fat boy rocked tonight.

[64] Any rule against it? I don't see any rules against it.

67 JeremyM   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:33 pm

Of course. Fucking Bollocks.

87 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:55 pm

Yeah, it was a mistake to let him start the ninth. I guess maybe Joe was thinking about the Cy Young?

88 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:55 pm

I'm very sad.
The Red Sox were eliminated tonight.
You too RIYank?

89 rbj   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:55 pm

Mo time. No one else.

90 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:57 pm

[87] The only thing pitching the 9th can do is screw up his chances (in progress). 21 Wins might wrap it up.

CC should be out. But I guess they figure he has 8 days to recover.

91 rbj   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:57 pm

Two outs to go.

92 rbj   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:57 pm

Yes, Mo.

93 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 9:58 pm

[88] Uh, isn't there a problem with the tense of the verb?

But RSN had already resigned itself, so it won't be very wonderful tomorrow. Everyone will be talking about the Patriots.

[89] FTW.

Goal #1 achieved. Get in the playoffs. Next up, goal #2, winning the division with the best record to get homefield advantage through the AL playoffs.

102 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:05 pm

[101] All in service of Goal #28, of course.

The Yankees have never celebrated clinching the playoffs when the division was still in play. Why are they doing it now?

108 The Hawk   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:14 pm

I don't know why Sabathia should win the Cy Young. Great season and all but there's a few guys better, notably David Price, who gave up zero runs tonight.

109 RIYank   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:15 pm

[108] And Felix, who is obviously the best pitcher in baseball.

110 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:15 pm

[108] Agreed. CC is #3 or #4.

111 Raf   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:16 pm

[107] How often has that happened? Clinching the playoffs when the division was in play?

112 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:18 pm

[108] According to B-R.com's WAR, it's closer than you think. After today, CC probably jumped up a place or two.

1. Hernandez (SEA) 5.6
2. Lester (BOS) 5.4
3. Weaver (LAA) 5.3
4. Buchholz (BOS) 5.2
5. Sabathia (NYY) 5.1
6. Price (TBR) 4.9
7. Danks (CHW) 4.8
Liriano (MIN) 4.8
Wilson (TEX) 4.8
10. Pavano (MIN) 4.3

113 Raf   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:18 pm

So will there be another celebration if the Yanks win the East?

114 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:19 pm

[111] Every time they've won the division and the WC has come from the AL East.

115 Raf   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:19 pm

Looks like the Rays are celebrating clinching a playoff spot as well.

116 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:20 pm

[109] Is King Felix better? How many games of significance has he had to pitch this year? How many times did he end a team losing streak? That being said...I would give up a lot to get him on my team.

117 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:26 pm

[111] 1897.

Looking at the numbers, King Felix is the CY.
Best ERA.
Most IP.
2nd best WHIP.
1st or 2nd in Ks.
2nd in CG.
1st in OPS against ( fuckin' .585! That's sick!)

But he won't get it.

118 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:29 pm

[117] Dude, when Steve Phillips thinks Hernandez deserves the Cy Young and Tim McCarver comes out and states that pitching wins are team dependent, I'll be betting on tha King ...

119 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:32 pm

[117] Great numbers against weaker teams, but you have to give him props. And if Greinke won it last year, then King Felix should.

120 The Hawk   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:33 pm

I think it should be price. His record is very comparable to CCs, his ERA significantly lower, and he's pitching in the same rough division. Even rougher, as he's had to pitch against the Yankees!

121 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:36 pm

[120] If you believe either or both versions of WAR, Price isn't even in the discussion.

122 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:37 pm

[120] Also, for those less sabermetricly inclined, Price has 30 and 40 fewer innings than CC and Felix, respectively.

123 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:40 pm

Cesar Izturis has the worst OPS in MLB at .557
Alcides Escobar is 2nd worst at .608
So King's OPS against of .585, for the ENTIRE year, has basically reduced every batter he's faced to Alcides Escobar. Really... that's nuts.

CC OPS against is impressive at .656

CC is 7th in ERA. Considering other stats and WAR, I think he stands at #6.

124 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:41 pm

Great numbers against weaker teams, but you have to give him props.

Ahhhh, yes.

Guess which team Felix did this against?

3GS 3-0 W/L 2CG 1SHO 26IP 16HA 31K 0.923WHIP

125 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:43 pm

Javy Vazquez starting tomorrow...yep...Yankees are still trying to win the division.

126 cult of basebaal   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:44 pm

[125] Whaa?

Why isn't Pettite starting?

He could kinda use it.

127 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:46 pm

Right now, I would take Javy over AJ starting in the PS.

[124] Hey! I gave him props.

128 williamnyy23   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:46 pm

[126] Nope...Javy is taking his turn. It was obvious over the last three weeks, but if anyone still had doubts, the New York Yankees have decided to settle for second best.

129 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Sep 28, 2010 10:48 pm

[128] There is only one best in baseball. Let's see what happens in late October, early November.

130 OldYanksFan   ~  Sep 28, 2010 11:50 pm

I would say winning the Division is a better statement of the quality of a team then winning the WS. However, with the strength of the AL EAST and the unbalanced schedule, AL East teams are at a disadvantage for overall best AL record.

The Yanks are better then TB, but they have just played terribly this last month. And a healthy Red Sox might be better then both (as Cliff thought in April).
