Huge game for the Twins as they look to even the series. The Yanks–and their fans–would love nothing more than to give Carl Pavano a beatin’ and return home up, 2-0.
Should be a good one. I expect Pavano to do well, but hopefully, not too well. And I’ve got no idea if we’ll see Good Andy or Bad Andy. He’ll need to be careful to Delmon Young, who owns him. Otherwise, time for the Score Truck to take it to the Bridge.
Let’s Go Yan-Kees!
Don't order from Domino's then...
Suck it, Rays. You too, Maddon. ha.
Now time to throw the mustachioed one into the wood chipper.
Go Yankees!
I would love an early innings beat-down so I can relax, but l realize this team is much more prone to the late innings rally. Either way, GO YANKS!
Let's go. Hit Pavano hard and often.
of course, i have to leave for work now, just as the game is starting....
GO ANDY!!! GO YANKS!!!
Oh no, Pavano is on his way to a 27 pitch perfect game!
Nope, he can't do it now.
omg, that 'stache is sooo fucking awful.
[6] i had been thinking the same thing. thanks for posting it for me. i wish i could be here for the game. alas, i'm thankful to be working. i should be around on saturday, i hope...
oh, FUCK YOU, pavano. i hope you hurt yourself on the way to the dugout...
I HATE when unmentionable sets the bar so high for the 1st inning.
HAHAHAHA!!! Great pic, Alex! Come on, Andy! Let's go ANSKY!!!
span was annoying there.
i hope andy get's pavano's strike zone. that thing was huge.
Yes!
sweet turn! i hope jetes is ok.
Good turn, Grandpas! : )
Great play Captain!
Ok, typical Andy inning. Baserunner, DP, K. I'll take it.
Atta boy, Andy! This is going to be the game the Yanks lay waste to him. I can feel it in me bones.
Can't really blame either Jetes or A-Rod for swinging at the first pitch. Those were fat pitches. Location-wise, anyway.
fuck robbie rode that.
Ohhhhhh fuck. I thought that was a double.
Just missed it Robbie.
[19] both were hit sharply
Man, CF is really, really far out there isn't it?
[19] [20] So the operative word for that particular Span catch is: "fuck".
Ah, that's more like it.
Now that's a double.
nice swish! finally one of those hard hit balls finds a hole.
Rats. I think even Jorge would have had a triple on that one.
They're zeroing in.
No way this slob sees the 5th. C'mon O!
Well, except for that one.
that mustache makes me hate pavano. i never really hated him until i saw that mustache.
[33] THAT is what pushed you over the edge??
uh oh here...
Uh oh.
Time for a little Houdini action.
Hello, everyone.
I'm a little nervous about Andy here. He's leaving a lot of stuff over the plate.
Crap. Another dp needed.
[37] triple play you mean.
it's frustrating when the pitch is so good that the out becomes a sacrifice bunt.
[38] We did have a no hitter last night so why not.
Oh crap
Alex is so good over there.
No cheapies, Jorge.
oh bull those have all been strikes for pavano.
Hoo boy.
Early returns from Andy are not good. Doesn't seem to be fooling anyone.
Getting behind the Twinkies is a good sign I suppose. : )
But not too far. One more.
Hey look, the Twins have a lead. Again. Aren't you all curious to see how they blow it THIS time?
[45] Fooled Mauer.
It would be nice if Posada quit moving all over the place and frame the damn pitches.
Of course it doesn't matter if the ump isn't calling strikes.
If the ball is in the blue screen. It's NOT close. It's a goddamn strike.
I will absolutely take that
That could have been worse.
[46] [47] Yep, we got 'em right where we wan'em.
Phew. Yanks are more than capable of getting that run back.
Looks like this'll be a vintage Andy performance: runners all over the place, Andy getting by with guile and big pitches. Limit the damage.
Good work, Andy.
Yesterday's game seems to have made everyone a lot more positive.
At least him is getting strikes 6 inches outside. Wake up blue. WTF!!
Come on Big Puma.
Does Pavano+Mustache=Voldemort?
The broadcasters seem to think this is Lance Berkman of about 2008. There's a reason he's platooning and batting 8th.
62--Yeah, anything Berkbonk does is gravy.
[56] a belly full of guts.
This is Darling and Smoltz, right? With Ernie Johnson?
(throwing up in my mouth)
When did Carl Pavano become a swing and miss pitcher?
You're not going to have many highlights when you don't fucking play.
[67] 6:10 eastern.
Swish!
Nice play, Swish. Three pitches, two outs.
Holy fuck, check out Swish!
What a long way he's come!
Last year every play with him was an adventure.
[72] That one wasn't adventurous enough for you?
Bravo, Andy.
Bravo.
Everyone get negative. It worked yesterday.
There you go, Andy. Now, where's that Score Truck?
[73] heehee.
Nice bounce back inning for Andy.
Nice inning Andy. Let's go bats. Wake up!
Good. Andy needed that inning!
Oh. Apparently I am "posting comments too quickly." My humblest apologies to all of you, and a big Fuck You to WordPress.
This blue square strike zone is going to be the end of me. Andy hit it 2 times vs. Mauer. Both balls. Pavano had 4 outside of the box last inning called strikes. Bollocks!
[80] I, for one, am happy to read all you post.
MO LIKES TACO BELL?!?!
[75] So you want us to get negative, and Monkeypants is all about zeroing in.
What about some >0 rhetoric? Huh? Let's go! Crooked numbers! Preferably positive ones!
[83] I know, disturbing, right?
[67] Hopefully Long will check the bats for holes because some of those pitches have looked hittable.
[84] I'll go for a few runs.
Hell. Yes.
That's my man, the Grandyman.
The Grandy Man, delivering again. Now, Pavano enters the gauntlet.
Once again, Kevin Long is a genius. I'm beginning to think he could retool my batting stance.
Bite it, Carl.
Here we go!
caaaaar-UHL
caaaaar-UHL
'bout time those fatties get spanked.
I wonder what Johnny Damon thinks of Granderson's performance in this series so far.
Now we're cooking with grease!
wtF is up with that mustache?
God, I loathe that man.
[90] I seriously think we might have the next Rudy Jaramillo on our hands, he seems to be some kind of miracle worker
Is Pavano's mustache mutating between innings?
[95] Or possibly gas.
Man, the Yankees look like they've figured something out here. Those are some violent swings.
Hey guys, some truck left a ton of runs in the hallway. Should we use them?
Batting practice!
Yess!
tee hee hee...
This is delightful.
What, that was a single???
Jesus, these are fucking rockets.
Ah, this is the Carl Pavano I remember. I think his buttocks might be injured.
[90] [97] I'm gonna see if K-Long will come work on my '78 Camaro.
[81] as the game goes along, they should overlay the blue rulebook strike zone with a red approximation of where this umpire is calling strikes.
Oh, fuck.
Fuck.
Goddamit.
Fuck. I wanted more.
son of a...
The Idle of Southington, CT is not long for this game
[99] That DP gave me gas.
"That's good enough, be happy that they scored one run. Although they could have scored two."--my 8yo.
#%#%$#%#$
Still a good inning. Pavano needs to make an adjustment or three or he's going to get served.
Typical Yankees just wanting to save the suspense.
[115] That's a wise 8 year old.
Swish was the only Yank who didn't hit the ball really hard.
[120] He seems to be letting things bother him. He doesn't seem at ease up there.
I really have gotten used to the YES pitch count. When it isn't there, I get bugged.
48 pitches for Pettitte so far.
[122] You know, for all the complaining we do about YES's coverage/broadcasters, once these games go national, I do find myself pining for the pitch counts and the Michael Kay lectures.
Oh, hey, another easy one!
[124] I think the actual play by play is Kay's worst features. His chatter isn't so bad.
[124] And when the postseason broadcast team has been pretty much anybody other than this TBS one, it's been pretty awful. We're lucky, honestly. Remember the White Sox idiots?
[127] I've been listening to John Sterling for 20 years. I can handle anybody.
[126] Agreed. His knowledge of the team is pretty encyclopedic. I don't really have any problems with Kay, other than that he's overexposed. Between the play-by-play, Centerstage, and his radio show, he's everywhere.
[127] Hawk Harrelson is the worst.
Oh ho ho ho!
Holy crap, did I just see that?
A Berk Bonk!
That's what I'M talking about!
ya see Carl, SOME people can handle the pressure...
a home run?? this guy hasn't been good since 2008!
Puma!
Elvis has left the building!!
Sweet!
[138] To be more accurate, Elvis's ball has left the building.
Wtf, Sterling... "C'est Louis! C'est Louis!" ? Anyone get that?
Louis???
[141] Uh, no.
Was that his Berkman HR call?
Hello
Two things. When the "booth" talks with the managers at these games, they don't say goodbye; they just keep on talking and you're left wondering is Girardi still there? Is it tape? Very disconcerting.
Also, remember those TBS commercials last year (or was it two years) for that imitator comedian show that was constantly played? Well, I can't remember his name now, and if Conan and his blimp commercials are played every fifteen minutes there might be a little recoil to him too, no matter how hip he is.
And...Berkman jerks one. Twins and their fans look a little tranquilized.
Wow, I guess that Fat Elvis *isn't* the irredemable sack of suck that some would have me believe ...
maybe he thinks berkman looks like a roi
Found this on a JOhn Sterling board:
Oh, Christ. It's another Broadway reference. In Camelot, Sir Lancelot sings a song called "C'est Moi," meaning, of course, "It's me!" So, not being Berkman, John must say--no, cry--"It's him!"
[145] A baggie of suck?
[144] It was Frank Cavsomething. And yeah, that show disappeared real quick
Yes, that was his HR call for Berkman, (something, something, "(?!?), (?!?)" ) Forgive me, I don't remember what he said before that because the 'C'est Louis" completely baffled me and Suzyn for that matter...
i was starting to think smoltz was kind of smart and then he says one of the most nonsensical things i've ever heard. doesn't everything potentially "affect a run"?
just think of everything Andy Pettitte symbolizes in the history of the Yankees...now think about everything Carl Pavano symbolizes in the history of the Yankees.
now. how badly do you wanna win this game?
[144] Frank Caliendo.
Also, what is John Smoltz talking about? Only replay stuff that results directly in runs? But a botched call could lead to a run down the line...
"an electrical phone"?!?! is that some kind of Yale thing I don't understand
Oh, c'est lui! [147] [150]
Word to fucking big bird.
Meanwhile, Andy is Dandy and somewhere, Nostralarmis is *smiling*!
[154] Heh. What won't they think of next?
[147] Thank you, Perfesser... I am no longer baffled. I am appalled.
[151] As far as reply is concern why not allow anything to be reviewed? Just give the managers 2 flags to use per game and they use it at their discretion. Of course this is MLB which can't figure out how best to award home field advantage in the playoffs so if replay is adopted they'll impliment it in the worst possible way.
[160] err replay not reply.
[159] i'm still baffled. why camelot? what does this have to do with berkman?
[159] I remember an exchange between Lucy and Linus. She says, "You're stupidity is appalling." And he says, "Most stupidity is."
[162] Lance(lot).
[162] Camelot is about King Arthur and Sir Lancelot. Lance Berkman. That's the connection.
Get the party started, Curtis!
Curtis Granderson = locked in.
[164] [165] [159] oh god, appalled is right.
[163] :) You sound like someone I either know or should know...
[162] Sir Lancelot... Lance Berkman...
[168] Also, John just loves musicals. I think that's why he loves Suzyn. You know that his "Something kinda Grandish" is also from a musical, right?
[152] So bad, and you sum it up beautifully. I want to embarrass that lying, punk, Porsche driver, who could not come clean even to his teammates. And that girlfriend....
Even Jeter who rarely says anything directly negative, expressed his dismay in a form of a question about Pavano.
I want his clothes peeled from his body by screaming line drives, like what happens to Charlie Brown. And guess what...it sounds like batting practice for the Yankees, just a little unlucky or we be blowing them out.
[169] Happy to make your acquaintance. I'm at sesquipedalian@mindspring.com.
leaning...
[172] I don't think anyone here doesn't have some animosity toward Pavano of some sort.
Good take. Now make it happen.
Go, Grandy, GOGOGOGO!
[170] i don't think i've heard him at all this year, or at least not when granderson hit a hr. are those real lyrics to a song, or does he sing it to the tune of "some enchanted evening" or something ridiculous like that?
[173] Did you fall?? Are you okay?
Goddammit.
THAT is why you steal.
Granderson should be on 3rd.
FUCK.
I really think Pavano is on the precipice here. We just need one more big blow...
Just need one or two of these hard hits drives to fall in and Pavano will break.
[174] i don't have any animosity towards pavano. don't you think he would have wanted to pitch like this for the yankees if he could have?
Good. Your turn Robbie. Square one up.
Now that was Grandish running.
[177] It's real -- it's from "Finnian's Rainbow".
[177] Something Sort of Grandish, from Carousel by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
OK, I'm wrong.
He is Voldemort. Mo FUCKING DAMNIT!
Uh, that was BULLSHIT Robbie, BULLSHIT.
Swish looking to avenge his DP earlier.
[172] Ha! RI, Monkeypants? You guys should talk, too!
[182] Yeah, but his teammates thought he wasn't trying to get back. That stinks.
And even so. I hate guys who leave the Yankees for any reason. They should all tank.
Funny, two Peanuts references within five minutes.
[186] I misspelled "Finian", too.
Okay, this is it, Swish. Line it up, pop it.
[192] Good grief!
[190] And Diane would probably like a word or three as well...
Damn.
That sunovabitch didn't deserve to get out of that.
[191] It is remarkable how injury free he is not being on the Yankees.
Fuckitty Fuck Fuck.
FUCKING BULLSHIT INNING.
Epic Fail. Fuck him with a rusty fork.
Damnit, we could have used some runs there guys. Hit with RISP. I don't want this to turn into one of those games.
Closer than I'd hoped. I was hoping we'd beat Pavano like a red-headed stepchild.
I'm lost, Will. Why should we all be talking?
I sure wish Cano had not swung at that pitch. Ugh.
[192] There's always time for a few Peanuts references...
Mmmmm...hot dogs....
[204] ...and, of course, peanuts...
Wield some more magic, Andy. Pressure cooker time.
[202] See [172], ref: address...
[208] Now I get why Diane. Are m.p. and I sesquipods?
I want to take an iron skillet to Carl's face.
Nails. Thass one.
Yesterday, the Twins scored 3 of their 4 runs will help from HBP, walks, and a wild pitch. If you don't give them those, they don't hit very much.
Oy.
Except, of course, for home runs.
Jeebus fucking Crystal
FUCKFUCKFUCK.
Who didn't see that coming?
[212] I blame you, personally, for that homer.
[204] Are we subliminally honoring noted Minnesotan Charles Schultz?
Well, that sucks. Hate to see them blow a big chance and then do that.
Fuck
Last inning officially sucks. O. Give me a fucking break.
Didn't help that the first pitch was a strike but called a ball.
[209] Occasionally. Maybe OYF and William are closer to definition...
[223] No, been a few bad calls on balls and strikes.
oops.
oops again.
These announcers are crazily for the Twins, wow.
[218] Sorry. It won't happen again.
Argh.
Christ on a crutch. Andy was pitching so well. He's only at 74 pitches.
Andy=done? or just a bad stretch?
Everyone take a deep breath. Two outs, tied game, plenty of time. Andy will get it done.
[228] Look, outside of Yankee fans, everyone is for the Twins. It's fine. I like it that way.
[219] Well, now you've dishonored him by mispelling his name.
These commentator pricks sure do seem more excited for Minnesota.
Whew.
[232] Just a bad stretch. He's fine.
Christ. Another 3 inning game.
I like our chances again, though.
[232] Two batters isn't much of a stretch.
[235] But you have dishonored misspelling by misspelling its name.
[219] No, noted cartoonist and American philosopher. The Minnesota connection is what it is.
[232] I'd stick with him, especially if the bats tack on a run or three in the top of the seventh.
Well that wasn't too bad.
Surprised to see Andy mouth "stupid pitch". Posada patted his chest like it was his call.
[240] Misspelling deserves it.
[244] when is it not?
[240] No, more like dishonoring myself. My apologies to his family and fans.
[247] And to anyone who may have been offended?
This ump misses every inside pitch on lefties and screws them all on the outside corner. boooooooooo
Well, these announcers certainly know about being mentally challenged.
[247] He used to misspell your name constantly, so don't worry about it.
Posada's my man!
[249] Robot. Umpire. Overlords.
Please, no plays, Joe! Please!
Lance Berkman sounds like a porn name.
Hmmmmmm.
[255] So does Royce Ring.
[253] I, for one, welcome our new robot umpire overlords.
That was a strike.
Ooooh.
Okay, so he doesn't merely suck-for-Andy. He just sucks. Clearly strike three!
[255] You remember Dick Pole?
Yes!
FAT FUCKING ELVIS!!!
HOLY SHIT! YOU THE MAN, LANCE!
Oh yes!!!!!
Posada scores from first! Now you know that's a looooongggg double.
It's the millenium! POSADA scored from first!!
Elvis has almost left the building again!!
[255] No, that would be Lance... nevermind. FAT ELVIS LIVE!
Hip Hip, Jorge!
Hooray Lance!
[261] Yeah, and the unfortunate Rusty Kuntz.
Is the crowd booing? Who?
Fat Elvis gets shit done, and then he eats two pounds of bacon like it's fucking nothing.
I knew it. No way any ump let's Gardenhire argue strikes.
[270] Unfortunate is definitely the word.
Holy hell. Bubba Crosby's former teammate has done good tonight.
Nice to see Pavano getting squeezed for a change.
Now pile it on.
[261] Before my time. I've always liked Rusy Kuntz, though.
Wendelstadt is a joke. There have been at least a dozen pitches 6 inches off the outside corner to lefties called strikes. No squawking about those from anyone.
2 games, 2 managers tossed!
Now, SWEEP THEIR FUCKING LEGS.
Put 'em in a body bag!
Stay classy, Minnesota!
A 14-pitch at bat for Gardner would be nice.
I wish Gardner just swing away.
KILL
or not.
Wow. Brett learned how to bunt last night.
Or a bunt single.
Gritner!
Pile. It. On.
Considering this team was gifted a full out last night, bitching about a single strike seems a bit absurd.
This is the Yankees being the Yankees. Put the pressure on, run out patient hitter after patient hitter, up the tension...
Gardy!
Jeter is overdue!
[289] On the other hand, he was correct.
Show these inbred hick bastards why you're the fucking Captain, Jeter.
[293] To paraphrase Mae West, Correctness has nothing to do with it.
Not running 0-2 was stupid.
[289] particularly when this umpire has been bad for both pitchers all game, and seemed to be giving pavano a bigger zone earlier
[295] Oooh, nice. I love that quotation. For goodness sake.
Wow, that's like 2 perfect bunts from Gardner in the last week.
Wonders never cease ...
[297] But still, Gardenhire was correct.
The fact that the same ump sucked all game doesn't mean Gardenhire was wrong.
Finally, Gritner's making the pitcher work. THIS is your game, Brett.
hey everyone. Looks like God is calling a breach of contract on Pavano's ass.
Come on Jeter.
JETERIAN
Captain!!
Hey, I like that.
What? No catch. Wow! ha.
FUCKING. HELL. YES.
I'm surprised the ump didn't call that an out.
Jetes! No way you can call that an out.
Goddam beautiful. Fucking, freaking beautiful.
Hats off to the captain.
Cap'n!!!
Bye, Carl!
Standing ovation. Minnesota fans aren't serious, I guess.
I miss Batgirl.
And the mustache has left the building!
[300] what makes him correct though? just that the ball happened to actually hit the corner of the rulebook strike zone? what does that really mean? we all know umpires don't call the strike zone by the rulebook, and we all know that this umpire has been squeezing both pitchers. and gardenhire doesn't even know that was a rulebook strike.
Man those announces got real bored again.
[316] I hate them.
Bobby Cox might get thown out tonight just for shits n' giggles. The toss out the manager hat-trick.
[315] From the game thread over at BBTF:
Bunting? Bad idea. He's killing the ball lately.
Wow... that was a painful dive Kubel took on Jeter's ball.
Gee... I hope he didn't Pavano himself.
PAVANO HIMSELF!
Get it?
Hahahahahahahahahhaha!
[315] Uh.
Yeah, the fact that the pitch was, in fact, a strike.
No?
Anyway, I despise Ron Gardenhire, so I refuse to defend him further. The team is very fortunate that he's in the clubhouse.
WHY ARE FUCKING BUNTING?!?!?!?
DOUBLE FUCKING STEAL.
[321] heh heh
Gotta hit the road...will catch the end of the game on the radio. Carry on without me!
Rodriguez with the bases loaded...
[319] Thanks for verifying my incessant bitching. I knew I wasn't losing my mind. Not all of it anyway. : )
They're walking Tex to get to Alex? Michael Kay must be going fucking nuts in the press box.
[325] Have fun!
It feels like we're killing them. Only 4-2...need more.
And Ron Darling should say:
No matter what it is, if you get 10 people in the business talking about something, you get 10 different opinions, but you know, they're amazingly well informed.”
Then he would James Woods.
What was RG throw out over?
Okay, I don't like bunting, but maybe Girardi knew that the Twins would then walk Teix. I mean, one dumb move deserves another. And the truth is the bunt isn't terrible (although I agree, Grandy is murdering the ball, which does make it worse).
So now a brand new relief pitcher gets to enter with the bases loaded. That IBB is just fucking moronic.
I think the Twins would have been better off starting on the road. They can't handle pressure and they play soft. Gardenhire is so not the best manager.
Waiter! A bases-clearing double, please!
Anyone else want anything?
[331] THROWN out about...
[334] I'll have what you're having.
Dammit that was it right there.
I have 100% confidence that Alex will come through here.
[331] [335] Arguing the missed strike-three call.
$ %$^$^%$^%$^%$%^$^%$%^$%^$^%$^%$^^%$$^%$^$^%$^$
[338] I blame you personally.
[338] the reverse almost worked...
Fucking fuck.
Awesome, just fucking awesome.
Goddammit.
That's ok. Cano will do it.
Oh Rob. Focus! Important!
Come on Robbie. No fucking outs.
Wow, Rauch is really fooling them...
[341] Blame the waiter.
This sucks. The guy is throwing strikes...
Good point by Smoltz. Long inning but apparently Andy will be back on the hill.
I didn't like the looks of that A Rod AB
[350] Just wait an inning if he's still around...
I have no faith in Cano right here.
Oh, shit.
That was disappointing. Well at least they chased Pavano
WASTED. Fucking wasted.
[354] Nice try.
dammit
Moving on...is anyone not available in the pen?
muthafucking gawdfuckingdamn fuckitty fuck fuck.
See, Joey Joe Joe, when you give outs AWAY you get FUCKED.
FUCKING PATHETIC.
This team's chronic ability to shove it's head up its ass with RiSP is going to cost them, sooner rather than later.
Fuck.
We better take this series, or that ARod/Cano fail will be why.
Man they love making their opponents bleed to death. Oh well 2 should be good enough.
Tip of the cap to Rauch. He flat out brought it.
Twins LOB: 3
Yanks LOB: 7
Not enough, but better than nothing. Good thing William's is not here, but I feel his discontent.
[362] and not running when you should. In this NY vs the World, Girardi's role seems to be to keep the World in it till the end.
Whoa, looks like I missed the King's return?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWRo6C_HcEo
Been a good game?
[366] All that means is that the Yanks have gotten on base a lot more than the Twinkies. Can't be left on base if you never get on.
A nice 1,2,3 inning would be nice.
[371] And redundant.
[369] Yeah, he's the hero... so far.
[370] Means a little more than that.
Long inning? what long inning?
The blue box has disappeared. Shocker.
AN-dy PETtitte CLAP CLAP CLAP-CLAP-CLAP...
[369] Mas o menos. We have a lead, but it should be bigger. The umps are in postseason suck form. Andy's walking the line pretty well, all things considered. Typical.
The Golden God.
Yes! Andy is making life difficult for Girardi's bullpen addiction.
The Golden God rides again.
Fucking beautiful.
(Standing ovation for Andy)
Fuck yes.
Finally got a call.
All hail Sir Andy of Pettitte!
Andy for the 8th? Wood? Joba?
I think you have to consider sending Andy out there for the 8th. I wish the bats would make it easy...too many runners stranded on third. Sterling must be going nuts.
I wanna see more Andy after watching him cruise like that
[385] Andy.
So, can the Golden God go another and hand off to the Silver Surfer? That would be quite a precious metallic combo. As it has been and ever shall be.
Indeed. Andy in the 8th.
Or, how about we score 10 runs and send out the second tier relievers
You could leave Andy in for Span, bring in RHP for Hudson, Logan for Mauer, then Wood/Rivera for the duration.
[389] Don't forget the Metallic(a) one.
He's only thrown 88 pitches. Yeah, send him out for the 8th.
Andy's only at 88 pitches.
[393] He's the Silver Surfer.
[396] lol. I figured that a second too late. : )
Hey, all! Nothing like seeing Fat Elvis work some magic, huh?
I'm all for Andy in the 8th, as long as Girardi has someone(s) up and ready to go in case of trouble.
[386] Nope, he seemed resigned to it, noting the hugs and congrats. Suzyn says Andy was arguing about being taken out. Joe will be Joe.
[399] Wait, Joe has already decided that Andy is out?
They're taking him out!!
Pettitte just got hugs and handshakes. He's done.
Wood rising in the bullpen...
Fucking Joe fucking Girardi. If this backfires I'll go fucking insane.
Dang, I don't get that. He's at 88 pitches, and he looks great. I don't get it. Now we play roulette.
[399] Coffee Joe can't help but spin the wheel of bullpen roulette ....
the guy did just come back after missing 2 months
This game should be at least 9-2.
grumblegrumblegrumblegrumblegrumblegrumble
Sweeny Murti on Twitter points out that he hasn't thrown anywhere near 100 pitches yet since coming back, so Joe probably doesn't want to push it. Still, I would have kept him for Hardy and LH Span.
[407] I guess that's it, yeah.
Well, I'm looking forward to seeing if Wood is mahogany or balsa this evening. We do have several good options. I would stay away from D-Rob, but Joba or Boone are good backup.
Even at only 88 pitches, Andy's only had 3 starts since forever. Need to build up arm strength.
[408] From the tone of stuff here, if I hadn't been watching the game, I'd think it was 9-2 Twins winning. Sheesh.
[411] And he's 38, and there's a lot more postseason left. Why not save some bullets?
I'm so upset I missed my boy.
This is unacceptable.
Still and all, how 'bout that Andy Pettitte, Team?
BRings a tear to the eye, still, after all these years.
Especially after all these years.
Now let's see if Wood can throw strikes.
Throw strikes, KW.
NASTY.
Filthy.
That was sweetly done.
Beautiful fucking breaking ball.
[412] Exactly. Win here, end it on Saturday and line up the rotation for the ALCS against Texas.
[412] Yeah, the negativity seems to work on the Yankees.
[413] My Andy Pettitte jersey and I agree with you, weeping. Nothing quite like Andy in a Game 2 of a postseason series.
We have entered Mo territory.
We're now in Mariano territory, although I don't know if Girardi would go 4 outs two days in a row.
Now these guys are openly rooting for the Twins.
[423] [424] Wow, you guys grew up in the same neighborhood or something.
Raise your hand if you thought in April we'd be rooting for Kerry Wood in the 8th inning of a Yanks' playoff game? Awesome inning. Just Awesome.
Huh. Wood burns, whowuddathunkit?
Wood was en fuego.
That Wood has brass ones.
Excellent.
Now.
Runs, boys, RUNS.
Damn, Kerry! Wood-be-good.
Best inning Wood has pitched...absolutely dominant.
Goddamn, that was overpowering.
Woodman, don't spare that Twin.
Alright, it was a stretch.
[427] Nope. And what a job he's done.
And I'd go with 10 runs here and save Mo.
[427] Not me.
[426] Root beers on them!
That said . . . as good as Wood has been for the Yanks, I hope the Yanks don't over-value his last 30-odd innings and give him big money to come back.
If its a reasonable deal, Marte-money say, that's OK, but anything more is not worth it, AFAIC.
[439] Root beer was definitely not big in my neighborhood.
[440] I was thinking some other team will overpay to bring Wood in as their closer.
[440] Some pundits were opining somewhere that Wood will get a better contract as a closer than the Yanks will give him, so he probably won't be back.
[440] Agreed.
Bring on the Geico runs.
Gardner should be stealing on every pitch thrown when he's on base.
[442] [443] I would take that, especially if he brings back a draft pick! Which I'm not sure he would.
Gardner have the green light here?
[441] More for us, then >;)
I'm asking the announcers not to be douches. They are......
When CC starts the ALCS, it will still be on short rest. no? Same with Andy, if he is still the #2? As long as well can rely on the BP, I see no reason to push the starters, 7 IP is pretty good these days.
[448] As much as I don't miss Chip Caray, I'm already very tired of Smoltz and Darling. Ugh, ugh, and ugh. Doesn't Darling do Mets games on SNY? I thought that crew was supposed to be good?
So the heroes for tonight (besides Andy, of course): Curtis w/2 hits, Lance w/2 hits, Wood with an overpowering inning of relief.
Think Brian Cashman is a happy man right now?
[449] ALl right, when you put it that way.
Thatta baby!
[445] Nice call!
Hey, Brett!
Where's Mattpat?
Gritner! Get that run in.
[451] And don't forget Gardner. Not signing Damon gave him the left field job.
[451] He did make some pretty smart moves.
Of course, if Granderson can get another hit, and an RBI now, that would be even better.
Wow, I'm surprised at you (Shaun) == Ron and John are much, much less offensive than Caray, or the Fox guys, or the ESPN team. To me.
[450] I think Darling has an acknowledged distaste for the Yanks. Smoltz, I would understand...
Love me some Granderson. That's my boy!
Nice!
[458] Nice job, Shaun.
Damon who? Matsui who?
A run Curtis-y of the Grandyman.
How many runs do they have to score here for Mitre to pitch the 9th?
Wonderful.
Wonderful.
[465]
[451] Yes, I bet Cashman's Wood is also rising at this very moment...
Part of me would like to see Wood start the 9th, and stay there until he gives up a baserunner.
[466] 9 more.
Nice catch, fat ass.
[465] groan
Oh fuck!
[459] I'm surprised at me too! Maybe my standards are too high. =) Sometime they are very good - but other times they just seem to fixate on a theme, and then beat it into submission. Repeatedly. "Oh its been a long inning" "Pettitte's been sitting for a long time" "If Pavano can stop the Yanks here, it might motivate his team to score runs" "If Pavano keeps the Yanks from scoring more here, that can be great momentum for the Twins hitters" Those are just two examples from tonight. What I saw last night was worse.
Shoot! I thought that was out. C'est la vie.
Minnesota? October warmth?
[470] Me too. Why not?
[463] Thanks!
[465] Please don't ever share that one with Sterling - though it did make me laugh.
[475] Oh, I didn't mean they're good. "Much better than the ESPN guys" does not imply "good".
[477] b/c tomorrow's an off day and it's the 9th inning for the love of Mo! ; )
Mo time.
Here we go...
One Mo time...
ARod's swing seems to have a loop to it, and he's getting under a lot of balls. Not many LDs yet.
[480] I know. But, over the next month, we'll be putting a lot of wear on the Shoulder that Hurls the Cutter. Save an inning now, save an inning next week, it might matter. And Wood looked so damned good.
[484] He looks a little anxious with his swing, too.
Pointless to bring in Mo. All it does is allows the Twins who are already defeated to go up there with nothing to lose.
Bring in Burnette!
I wonder if Kerry Wood could become an effective starter.
Well, here we go
The Yellow Pages should really rethink their web domain. Y P? Because I had a few beers.
[480] So, even with a day off, if we NEED him in game #3, you're OK with 3 appearances in 4 days? And what about game #4? Mo is 40. We have a 3 run lead. And Mo would be there, just in case.
[489] I think Wood the starter = AJ 2
[491] That one caught me off guard.
Here we go...
[480] But he already had to warm up, so he might as well go in.
[478] Thanks. If Emma or Diane does the write up, they're free to use it. I have no power over puns.
Am I comment 500?
[493] Maybe he's matured though.
[484] [486] He's killed the Twins so much over the years in division series . . . if he doesn't do so this time, that's probably OK. I think he'll be fine.
How was Wood vs LHB this year? With Mauer and Thome up, I am very much OK with the Sandman and his lefty-killing repertoire in.
Goddamit. Goddamit.
These broken bat singles piss me off
So, somebody say it, go ahead...
[501] [502] Double play, that's all. Double play.
Win tonight. Worry about the other games later.
[504] Beautiful!
What a thing of beauty!
Oh yeah....!
[504] Thanks!
Patented double play
HEYYY!!!
How often does Mo get a twin-killing?!
(Hah. Twin killing.)
Shaun, you are in charge tonight!
These announcers really seemed pissed that the Yankees are winning.
Poifect Mo, Just poifect
Amazing how that blue screen doesn't function in the bottom of innings.
[504] Cheers.
Y'all are just being contrarian about leaving Mo out of tonight's 9th. i can't believe it really. : )
And thus spoke THE MO: "Lo! When a batter gets a broken bat bloop single, I can remove him with a ground ball double play, for I am MO."
Got 'em.
praise be to Mo!
Praise be to Mo.
All Rise.
Sweet.
WOOHOO!
Ah yes. Love this.
Wonderful. That was a picture perfect win.
Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Yankees Wiiin!
Nine more wins! Clinch the ALDS in front of me on Saturday
Sheesh, I expect that if they showed these announcers on screen, they'd all be wearing black with top hats.
[512] I could use something going right! =)
Praise Be To Mo.
[513] They do seem to be a little less exuberant than when Mauer singled. Maybe that's because they wanted a closer game. Or not.
That's right motherfuckers. Now it's up to Hughes to put the broom to these pricks.
I feel sorry for the Twins. I can't help it.
Good night all!
A very good night.
I vote for Shaun P. as the blog chat MVP.
If Pettitte keeps this up, he is going to find himself in the Hall of Fame.
Praise be to Shaun!
Only NL baseball for a day.
[533] He should be there on his playoff resume alone.
[503] That's Diane's job >;)
500+ comments... now that's Yankee baseball.
Okay, back to the script and 4am wake-up call...
Goodnight, all! See you Saturday, if possible.
[533] I think he might make it as he is now . . . but I do wonder if the lure of hte Hall will bring Andy back for one more year.
"Sir Lancelot rides to the rescue! C'est lui! C'est lui!"
Yeah, he seddit. Oy...
...and speaking of Oy, how about this bit out of Tampa... I guess we have a good idea why they're down 2-0 besides the fact that the Rangers starters have owned them like a ten-year old Ford.
We complain about Girardi's bullpen roulette, but how about Maddon's roster roulette? Hopefully he doesn't give Joe any ideas. One thing seems clear, looks like the Yanks really did dodge a bullet letting Navarro go...
[541] I saw that, pretty disappointing from Navarro, but makes it pretty clear to see why he hasn't lived up to his potential.
[541] 'Course, now the Yanks are almost drowning in catching prospects, so that makes the sting of Navarro's long-ago loss less.
Good night all!
How much do I love Andy Pettitte in October? (Let me count the ways...)
Agree with those posting above that Cash looked awfully good tonight with the stars.
I thought the pitchers-in-the-booth were okay except for one thing that pissed me off. They made SO much of the TBS pitchtrack showing that Pavano to Lance inside kissed the rectangle BUT ... the plate ump's game all night had been to give 2-3 inches off the plate and squeeze inside. All night. Even on that at-bat it was clear that an earlier called strike was way away. So why aren't smart commentators saying that? Analyzing the ump's zone? It wasn't until the post-game interview on TBS that Berkman said it, loud and clear: he was generous away and tight inside and we reacted accordingly. In fact a pitch of Mo's in the 9th (to Mauer I think) was exactly where Pavano's was ... and was called a ball.
Now the Rays, they had a beef with that Young check swing. (And we wanted 5 games there with Lee vs Price in the 5th).
[544] Here's is Wendlestedt's strike zone in picture form: http://tinyurl.com/29xhwmv.
The Twins have nothing to complain about.
Yankees win, check.
My Huskers murderizing K-State, check.
Just cuz you the ump misses a call, doesn't mean you have to let up a double on the next pitch. My Twins-fan friend is trying to figure out if Gardy gave up or was thought his team needed some firing up.
NPUT.
Just finished watching the win (I had plans to go out earlier so dvred the game). Way to go Yankees!!!
