Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down

Huge game for the Twins as they look to even the series. The Yanks–and their fans–would love nothing more than to give Carl Pavano a beatin’ and return home up, 2-0.

Should be a good one. I expect Pavano to do well, but hopefully, not too well. And I’ve got no idea if we’ll see Good Andy or Bad Andy. He’ll need to be careful to Delmon Young, who owns him. Otherwise, time for the Score Truck to take it to the Bridge.

Let’s Go Yan-Kees!

Don't order from Domino's then...

2 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 5:50 pm

Suck it, Rays. You too, Maddon. ha.
Now time to throw the mustachioed one into the wood chipper.
Go Yankees!

3 Matt Blankman   ~  Oct 7, 2010 5:52 pm

I would love an early innings beat-down so I can relax, but l realize this team is much more prone to the late innings rally. Either way, GO YANKS!

4 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:08 pm

Let's go. Hit Pavano hard and often.

5 thelarmis   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:09 pm

of course, i have to leave for work now, just as the game is starting....

GO ANDY!!! GO YANKS!!!

6 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:11 pm

Oh no, Pavano is on his way to a 27 pitch perfect game!

Nope, he can't do it now.

7 thelarmis   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:12 pm

omg, that 'stache is sooo fucking awful.

8 thelarmis   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:13 pm

[6] i had been thinking the same thing. thanks for posting it for me. i wish i could be here for the game. alas, i'm thankful to be working. i should be around on saturday, i hope...

oh, FUCK YOU, pavano. i hope you hurt yourself on the way to the dugout...

9 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:16 pm

I HATE when unmentionable sets the bar so high for the 1st inning.

10 nettles   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:20 pm

HAHAHAHA!!! Great pic, Alex! Come on, Andy! Let's go ANSKY!!!

11 seamus   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:21 pm

span was annoying there.

12 seamus   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:22 pm

i hope andy get's pavano's strike zone. that thing was huge.

13 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:22 pm

Yes!

14 seamus   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:22 pm

sweet turn! i hope jetes is ok.

15 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:22 pm

Good turn, Grandpas! : )

16 tommyl   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:23 pm

Great play Captain!

17 tommyl   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:24 pm

Ok, typical Andy inning. Baserunner, DP, K. I'll take it.

18 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:24 pm

Atta boy, Andy! This is going to be the game the Yanks lay waste to him. I can feel it in me bones.

19 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:27 pm

Can't really blame either Jetes or A-Rod for swinging at the first pitch. Those were fat pitches. Location-wise, anyway.

20 seamus   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:29 pm

fuck robbie rode that.

21 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:29 pm

Ohhhhhh fuck. I thought that was a double.

22 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:29 pm

Just missed it Robbie.

23 seamus   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:29 pm

[19] both were hit sharply

24 tommyl   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:29 pm

Man, CF is really, really far out there isn't it?

25 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:29 pm

[19] [20] So the operative word for that particular Span catch is: "fuck".

26 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:30 pm

Ah, that's more like it.

27 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:30 pm

Now that's a double.

28 seamus   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:30 pm

nice swish! finally one of those hard hit balls finds a hole.

29 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:30 pm

Rats. I think even Jorge would have had a triple on that one.

30 monkeypants   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:30 pm

They're zeroing in.

31 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:32 pm

No way this slob sees the 5th. C'mon O!

32 monkeypants   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:32 pm

Well, except for that one.

33 seamus   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:33 pm

that mustache makes me hate pavano. i never really hated him until i saw that mustache.

34 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:37 pm

[33] THAT is what pushed you over the edge??

uh oh here...

35 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:37 pm

Uh oh.
Time for a little Houdini action.

36 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:37 pm

Hello, everyone.

I'm a little nervous about Andy here. He's leaving a lot of stuff over the plate.

37 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:37 pm

Crap. Another dp needed.

38 seamus   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:38 pm

[37] triple play you mean.

39 seamus   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:39 pm

it's frustrating when the pitch is so good that the out becomes a sacrifice bunt.

40 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:39 pm

[38] We did have a no hitter last night so why not.

Oh crap

41 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:39 pm

Alex is so good over there.

42 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:40 pm

No cheapies, Jorge.

43 seamus   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:40 pm

oh bull those have all been strikes for pavano.

44 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:41 pm

Hoo boy.

45 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:42 pm

Early returns from Andy are not good. Doesn't seem to be fooling anyone.

46 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:42 pm

Getting behind the Twinkies is a good sign I suppose. : )
But not too far. One more.

47 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:42 pm

Hey look, the Twins have a lead. Again. Aren't you all curious to see how they blow it THIS time?

48 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:42 pm

[45] Fooled Mauer.

49 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:43 pm

It would be nice if Posada quit moving all over the place and frame the damn pitches.

50 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:43 pm

Of course it doesn't matter if the ump isn't calling strikes.

51 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:44 pm

If the ball is in the blue screen. It's NOT close. It's a goddamn strike.

52 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:44 pm

I will absolutely take that

53 monkeypants   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:44 pm

That could have been worse.

54 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:44 pm

[46] [47] Yep, we got 'em right where we wan'em.

55 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:45 pm

Phew. Yanks are more than capable of getting that run back.

56 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:45 pm

Looks like this'll be a vintage Andy performance: runners all over the place, Andy getting by with guile and big pitches. Limit the damage.

57 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:45 pm

Good work, Andy.

58 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:46 pm

Yesterday's game seems to have made everyone a lot more positive.

59 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:48 pm

At least him is getting strikes 6 inches outside. Wake up blue. WTF!!

60 tommyl   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:48 pm

Come on Big Puma.

61 tommyl   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:48 pm

Does Pavano+Mustache=Voldemort?

62 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:48 pm

The broadcasters seem to think this is Lance Berkman of about 2008. There's a reason he's platooning and batting 8th.

63 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:50 pm

62--Yeah, anything Berkbonk does is gravy.

64 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:51 pm

[56] a belly full of guts.

65 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:52 pm

This is Darling and Smoltz, right? With Ernie Johnson?

66 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:53 pm

(throwing up in my mouth)

67 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:53 pm

When did Carl Pavano become a swing and miss pitcher?

68 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:54 pm

You're not going to have many highlights when you don't fucking play.

69 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:57 pm

[67] 6:10 eastern.

70 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:57 pm

Swish!

71 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:57 pm

Nice play, Swish. Three pitches, two outs.

72 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:57 pm

Holy fuck, check out Swish!

What a long way he's come!

Last year every play with him was an adventure.

73 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:58 pm

[72] That one wasn't adventurous enough for you?

74 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:58 pm

Bravo, Andy.

Bravo.

75 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:59 pm

Everyone get negative. It worked yesterday.

76 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:59 pm

There you go, Andy. Now, where's that Score Truck?

77 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:59 pm

[73] heehee.

78 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:59 pm

Nice bounce back inning for Andy.

79 tommyl   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:59 pm

Nice inning Andy. Let's go bats. Wake up!

80 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:59 pm

Good. Andy needed that inning!

Oh. Apparently I am "posting comments too quickly." My humblest apologies to all of you, and a big Fuck You to WordPress.

81 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 6:59 pm

This blue square strike zone is going to be the end of me. Andy hit it 2 times vs. Mauer. Both balls. Pavano had 4 outside of the box last inning called strikes. Bollocks!

82 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:00 pm

[80] I, for one, am happy to read all you post.

83 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:00 pm

MO LIKES TACO BELL?!?!

84 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:00 pm

[75] So you want us to get negative, and Monkeypants is all about zeroing in.
What about some >0 rhetoric? Huh? Let's go! Crooked numbers! Preferably positive ones!

85 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:01 pm

[83] I know, disturbing, right?

86 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:02 pm

[67] Hopefully Long will check the bats for holes because some of those pitches have looked hittable.

87 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:02 pm

[84] I'll go for a few runs.

88 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:02 pm

Hell. Yes.
That's my man, the Grandyman.

89 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:02 pm

The Grandy Man, delivering again. Now, Pavano enters the gauntlet.

90 tommyl   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:03 pm

Once again, Kevin Long is a genius. I'm beginning to think he could retool my batting stance.

91 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:03 pm

Bite it, Carl.
Here we go!

'bout time those fatties get spanked.

94 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:03 pm

I wonder what Johnny Damon thinks of Granderson's performance in this series so far.

95 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:03 pm

Now we're cooking with grease!

96 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:04 pm

wtF is up with that mustache?

God, I loathe that man.

97 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:04 pm

[90] I seriously think we might have the next Rudy Jaramillo on our hands, he seems to be some kind of miracle worker

98 tommyl   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:04 pm

Is Pavano's mustache mutating between innings?

99 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:05 pm

[95] Or possibly gas.

100 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:05 pm

Man, the Yankees look like they've figured something out here. Those are some violent swings.

Jesus, these are fucking rockets.

107 tommyl   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:06 pm

Ah, this is the Carl Pavano I remember. I think his buttocks might be injured.

108 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:06 pm

[90] [97] I'm gonna see if K-Long will come work on my '78 Camaro.

109 51cq24   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:06 pm

[81] as the game goes along, they should overlay the blue rulebook strike zone with a red approximation of where this umpire is calling strikes.

110 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:07 pm

Oh, fuck.

Fuck.

111 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:07 pm

#%#%$#%#$

117 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:08 pm

Still a good inning. Pavano needs to make an adjustment or three or he's going to get served.

118 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:08 pm

Typical Yankees just wanting to save the suspense.

119 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:09 pm

[115] That's a wise 8 year old.

120 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:09 pm

Swish was the only Yank who didn't hit the ball really hard.

121 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:10 pm

[120] He seems to be letting things bother him. He doesn't seem at ease up there.

122 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:11 pm

I really have gotten used to the YES pitch count. When it isn't there, I get bugged.

123 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:11 pm

48 pitches for Pettitte so far.

124 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:12 pm

[122] You know, for all the complaining we do about YES's coverage/broadcasters, once these games go national, I do find myself pining for the pitch counts and the Michael Kay lectures.

125 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:13 pm

Oh, hey, another easy one!

126 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:14 pm

[124] I think the actual play by play is Kay's worst features. His chatter isn't so bad.

127 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:14 pm

[124] And when the postseason broadcast team has been pretty much anybody other than this TBS one, it's been pretty awful. We're lucky, honestly. Remember the White Sox idiots?

128 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:15 pm

[127] I've been listening to John Sterling for 20 years. I can handle anybody.

129 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:16 pm

[126] Agreed. His knowledge of the team is pretty encyclopedic. I don't really have any problems with Kay, other than that he's overexposed. Between the play-by-play, Centerstage, and his radio show, he's everywhere.

130 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:17 pm

[127] Hawk Harrelson is the worst.

131 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:17 pm

141 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:20 pm

Wtf, Sterling... "C'est Louis! C'est Louis!" ? Anyone get that?

142 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:21 pm

Louis???

143 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:21 pm

[141] Uh, no.
Was that his Berkman HR call?

144 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:22 pm

Hello

Two things. When the "booth" talks with the managers at these games, they don't say goodbye; they just keep on talking and you're left wondering is Girardi still there? Is it tape? Very disconcerting.

Also, remember those TBS commercials last year (or was it two years) for that imitator comedian show that was constantly played? Well, I can't remember his name now, and if Conan and his blimp commercials are played every fifteen minutes there might be a little recoil to him too, no matter how hip he is.

And...Berkman jerks one. Twins and their fans look a little tranquilized.

145 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:22 pm

Wow, I guess that Fat Elvis *isn't* the irredemable sack of suck that some would have me believe ...

146 51cq24   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:22 pm

maybe he thinks berkman looks like a roi

147 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:23 pm

Found this on a JOhn Sterling board:

Oh, Christ. It's another Broadway reference. In Camelot, Sir Lancelot sings a song called "C'est Moi," meaning, of course, "It's me!" So, not being Berkman, John must say--no, cry--"It's him!"

148 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:23 pm

[145] A baggie of suck?

149 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:24 pm

[144] It was Frank Cavsomething. And yeah, that show disappeared real quick

150 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:25 pm

Yes, that was his HR call for Berkman, (something, something, "(?!?), (?!?)" ) Forgive me, I don't remember what he said before that because the 'C'est Louis" completely baffled me and Suzyn for that matter...

151 51cq24   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:25 pm

i was starting to think smoltz was kind of smart and then he says one of the most nonsensical things i've ever heard. doesn't everything potentially "affect a run"?

152 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:26 pm

just think of everything Andy Pettitte symbolizes in the history of the Yankees...now think about everything Carl Pavano symbolizes in the history of the Yankees.

now. how badly do you wanna win this game?

153 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:26 pm

[144] Frank Caliendo.

Also, what is John Smoltz talking about? Only replay stuff that results directly in runs? But a botched call could lead to a run down the line...

154 RagingTartabull   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:27 pm

"an electrical phone"?!?! is that some kind of Yale thing I don't understand

155 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:27 pm

157 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:28 pm

Meanwhile, Andy is Dandy and somewhere, Nostralarmis is *smiling*!

158 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:28 pm

[154] Heh. What won't they think of next?

159 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:29 pm

[147] Thank you, Perfesser... I am no longer baffled. I am appalled.

160 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:29 pm

[151] As far as reply is concern why not allow anything to be reviewed? Just give the managers 2 flags to use per game and they use it at their discretion. Of course this is MLB which can't figure out how best to award home field advantage in the playoffs so if replay is adopted they'll impliment it in the worst possible way.

161 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:30 pm

[160] err replay not reply.

162 51cq24   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:30 pm

[159] i'm still baffled. why camelot? what does this have to do with berkman?

163 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:30 pm

[159] I remember an exchange between Lucy and Linus. She says, "You're stupidity is appalling." And he says, "Most stupidity is."

164 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:31 pm

[162] Lance(lot).

165 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:31 pm

[162] Camelot is about King Arthur and Sir Lancelot. Lance Berkman. That's the connection.

[164] [165] [159] oh god, appalled is right.

169 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:33 pm

[163] :) You sound like someone I either know or should know...

[162] Sir Lancelot... Lance Berkman...

170 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:34 pm

[168] Also, John just loves musicals. I think that's why he loves Suzyn. You know that his "Something kinda Grandish" is also from a musical, right?

171 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:34 pm

[152] So bad, and you sum it up beautifully. I want to embarrass that lying, punk, Porsche driver, who could not come clean even to his teammates. And that girlfriend....

Even Jeter who rarely says anything directly negative, expressed his dismay in a form of a question about Pavano.

I want his clothes peeled from his body by screaming line drives, like what happens to Charlie Brown. And guess what...it sounds like batting practice for the Yankees, just a little unlucky or we be blowing them out.

172 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:34 pm

[169] Happy to make your acquaintance. I'm at sesquipedalian@mindspring.com.

174 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:35 pm

[172] I don't think anyone here doesn't have some animosity toward Pavano of some sort.

175 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:36 pm

Good take. Now make it happen.

176 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:36 pm

Go, Grandy, GOGOGOGO!

177 51cq24   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:37 pm

[170] i don't think i've heard him at all this year, or at least not when granderson hit a hr. are those real lyrics to a song, or does he sing it to the tune of "some enchanted evening" or something ridiculous like that?

178 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:37 pm

[173] Did you fall?? Are you okay?

179 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:37 pm

Goddammit.

THAT is why you steal.

Granderson should be on 3rd.

FUCK.

180 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:37 pm

I really think Pavano is on the precipice here. We just need one more big blow...

181 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:38 pm

Just need one or two of these hard hits drives to fall in and Pavano will break.

182 51cq24   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:38 pm

[174] i don't have any animosity towards pavano. don't you think he would have wanted to pitch like this for the yankees if he could have?

183 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:38 pm

Good. Your turn Robbie. Square one up.

184 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:39 pm

[172] Ha! RI, Monkeypants? You guys should talk, too!

191 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:40 pm

[182] Yeah, but his teammates thought he wasn't trying to get back. That stinks.

And even so. I hate guys who leave the Yankees for any reason. They should all tank.

Funny, two Peanuts references within five minutes.

193 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:41 pm

Okay, this is it, Swish. Line it up, pop it.

[192] Good grief!

195 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 7:42 pm

Yesterday, the Twins scored 3 of their 4 runs will help from HBP, walks, and a wild pitch. If you don't give them those, they don't hit very much.

278 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:03 pm

[261] Before my time. I've always liked Rusy Kuntz, though.
Wendelstadt is a joke. There have been at least a dozen pitches 6 inches off the outside corner to lefties called strikes. No squawking about those from anyone.

[300] what makes him correct though? just that the ball happened to actually hit the corner of the rulebook strike zone? what does that really mean? we all know umpires don't call the strike zone by the rulebook, and we all know that this umpire has been squeezing both pitchers. and gardenhire doesn't even know that was a rulebook strike.

Then he would James Woods.

What was RG throw out over?

332 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:15 pm

Okay, I don't like bunting, but maybe Girardi knew that the Twins would then walk Teix. I mean, one dumb move deserves another. And the truth is the bunt isn't terrible (although I agree, Grandy is murdering the ball, which does make it worse).

So now a brand new relief pitcher gets to enter with the bases loaded. That IBB is just fucking moronic.

333 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:15 pm

I think the Twins would have been better off starting on the road. They can't handle pressure and they play soft. Gardenhire is so not the best manager.

That's ok. Cano will do it.

370 randym77   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:25 pm

[366] All that means is that the Yanks have gotten on base a lot more than the Twinkies. Can't be left on base if you never get on.

371 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:25 pm

380 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:30 pm

385 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:30 pm

Andy for the 8th? Wood? Joba?

386 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:31 pm

I think you have to consider sending Andy out there for the 8th. I wish the bats would make it easy...too many runners stranded on third. Sterling must be going nuts.

387 joe   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:31 pm

I wanna see more Andy after watching him cruise like that

388 felix holt   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:31 pm

[385] Andy.

389 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:32 pm

So, can the Golden God go another and hand off to the Silver Surfer? That would be quite a precious metallic combo. As it has been and ever shall be.

390 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:32 pm

Indeed. Andy in the 8th.

391 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:32 pm

Or, how about we score 10 runs and send out the second tier relievers

392 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:33 pm

You could leave Andy in for Span, bring in RHP for Hudson, Logan for Mauer, then Wood/Rivera for the duration.

393 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:33 pm

[389] Don't forget the Metallic(a) one.

394 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:33 pm

He's only thrown 88 pitches. Yeah, send him out for the 8th.

395 randym77   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:33 pm

Andy's only at 88 pitches.

396 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:33 pm

[393] He's the Silver Surfer.

397 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:34 pm

[396] lol. I figured that a second too late. : )

398 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:35 pm

Hey, all! Nothing like seeing Fat Elvis work some magic, huh?

I'm all for Andy in the 8th, as long as Girardi has someone(s) up and ready to go in case of trouble.

399 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:35 pm

[386] Nope, he seemed resigned to it, noting the hugs and congrats. Suzyn says Andy was arguing about being taken out. Joe will be Joe.

408 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:37 pm

This game should be at least 9-2.
grumblegrumblegrumblegrumblegrumblegrumble

409 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:39 pm

Sweeny Murti on Twitter points out that he hasn't thrown anywhere near 100 pitches yet since coming back, so Joe probably doesn't want to push it. Still, I would have kept him for Hardy and LH Span.

410 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:39 pm

[407] I guess that's it, yeah.

Well, I'm looking forward to seeing if Wood is mahogany or balsa this evening. We do have several good options. I would stay away from D-Rob, but Joba or Boone are good backup.

411 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:39 pm

Even at only 88 pitches, Andy's only had 3 starts since forever. Need to build up arm strength.

412 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:40 pm

[408] From the tone of stuff here, if I hadn't been watching the game, I'd think it was 9-2 Twins winning. Sheesh.

[411] And he's 38, and there's a lot more postseason left. Why not save some bullets?

413 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:41 pm

I'm so upset I missed my boy.

This is unacceptable.

Still and all, how 'bout that Andy Pettitte, Team?

BRings a tear to the eye, still, after all these years.

Especially after all these years.

414 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:41 pm

Now let's see if Wood can throw strikes.

415 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:41 pm

Throw strikes, KW.

416 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:42 pm

420 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:42 pm

[412] Exactly. Win here, end it on Saturday and line up the rotation for the ALCS against Texas.

421 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:42 pm

[412] Yeah, the negativity seems to work on the Yankees.

422 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:42 pm

[413] My Andy Pettitte jersey and I agree with you, weeping. Nothing quite like Andy in a Game 2 of a postseason series.

423 Eirias   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:43 pm

We have entered Mo territory.

424 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:44 pm

We're now in Mariano territory, although I don't know if Girardi would go 4 outs two days in a row.

425 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:44 pm

Now these guys are openly rooting for the Twins.

426 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:44 pm

[423] [424] Wow, you guys grew up in the same neighborhood or something.

427 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:45 pm

Raise your hand if you thought in April we'd be rooting for Kerry Wood in the 8th inning of a Yanks' playoff game? Awesome inning. Just Awesome.

428 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:45 pm

Huh. Wood burns, whowuddathunkit?

429 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:45 pm

432 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:45 pm

Damn, Kerry! Wood-be-good.

433 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:45 pm

Best inning Wood has pitched...absolutely dominant.

434 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:45 pm

Goddamn, that was overpowering.

435 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:45 pm

Woodman, don't spare that Twin.

Alright, it was a stretch.

436 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:46 pm

[427] Nope. And what a job he's done.

437 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:46 pm

And I'd go with 10 runs here and save Mo.

438 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:46 pm

[427] Not me.

439 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:47 pm

[426] Root beers on them!

440 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:48 pm

That said . . . as good as Wood has been for the Yanks, I hope the Yanks don't over-value his last 30-odd innings and give him big money to come back.

If its a reasonable deal, Marte-money say, that's OK, but anything more is not worth it, AFAIC.

441 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:49 pm

[439] Root beer was definitely not big in my neighborhood.

442 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:49 pm

[440] I was thinking some other team will overpay to bring Wood in as their closer.

443 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:49 pm

[440] Some pundits were opining somewhere that Wood will get a better contract as a closer than the Yanks will give him, so he probably won't be back.

444 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:50 pm

[440] Agreed.
Bring on the Geico runs.

445 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:50 pm

Gardner should be stealing on every pitch thrown when he's on base.

446 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:50 pm

[442] [443] I would take that, especially if he brings back a draft pick! Which I'm not sure he would.

Gardner have the green light here?

447 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:50 pm

[441] More for us, then >;)

448 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:51 pm

I'm asking the announcers not to be douches. They are......

449 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:51 pm

When CC starts the ALCS, it will still be on short rest. no? Same with Andy, if he is still the #2? As long as well can rely on the BP, I see no reason to push the starters, 7 IP is pretty good these days.

450 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:52 pm

[448] As much as I don't miss Chip Caray, I'm already very tired of Smoltz and Darling. Ugh, ugh, and ugh. Doesn't Darling do Mets games on SNY? I thought that crew was supposed to be good?

451 mjpucci   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:52 pm

So the heroes for tonight (besides Andy, of course): Curtis w/2 hits, Lance w/2 hits, Wood with an overpowering inning of relief.

Think Brian Cashman is a happy man right now?

452 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:53 pm

[449] ALl right, when you put it that way.

453 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:53 pm

454 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:53 pm

[445] Nice call!

455 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:53 pm

Hey, Brett!

Where's Mattpat?

456 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:53 pm

Gritner! Get that run in.

457 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:54 pm

[451] And don't forget Gardner. Not signing Damon gave him the left field job.

458 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:54 pm

[451] He did make some pretty smart moves.

Of course, if Granderson can get another hit, and an RBI now, that would be even better.

459 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:54 pm

Wow, I'm surprised at you (Shaun) == Ron and John are much, much less offensive than Caray, or the Fox guys, or the ESPN team. To me.

460 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:55 pm

[450] I think Darling has an acknowledged distaste for the Yanks. Smoltz, I would understand...

461 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:55 pm

Love me some Granderson. That's my boy!

462 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:56 pm

Nice!

463 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:56 pm

[458] Nice job, Shaun.

464 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:56 pm

Damon who? Matsui who?

465 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:56 pm

A run Curtis-y of the Grandyman.

466 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:56 pm

How many runs do they have to score here for Mitre to pitch the 9th?

467 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:56 pm

Wonderful.

Wonderful.

468 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:57 pm
469 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:57 pm

[451] Yes, I bet Cashman's Wood is also rising at this very moment...

470 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:57 pm

Part of me would like to see Wood start the 9th, and stay there until he gives up a baserunner.

471 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:57 pm

[466] 9 more.

472 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:57 pm

Nice catch, fat ass.

473 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:58 pm

[465] groan

474 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:58 pm

Oh fuck!

475 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:58 pm

[459] I'm surprised at me too! Maybe my standards are too high. =) Sometime they are very good - but other times they just seem to fixate on a theme, and then beat it into submission. Repeatedly. "Oh its been a long inning" "Pettitte's been sitting for a long time" "If Pavano can stop the Yanks here, it might motivate his team to score runs" "If Pavano keeps the Yanks from scoring more here, that can be great momentum for the Twins hitters" Those are just two examples from tonight. What I saw last night was worse.

Shoot! I thought that was out. C'est la vie.

476 Eirias   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:58 pm

Minnesota? October warmth?

477 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:58 pm

[470] Me too. Why not?

478 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:59 pm

[463] Thanks!

[465] Please don't ever share that one with Sterling - though it did make me laugh.

479 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 8:59 pm

[475] Oh, I didn't mean they're good. "Much better than the ESPN guys" does not imply "good".

480 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:00 pm

[477] b/c tomorrow's an off day and it's the 9th inning for the love of Mo! ; )

481 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:01 pm

Mo time.

482 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:01 pm

Here we go...

483 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:01 pm

One Mo time...

484 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:01 pm

ARod's swing seems to have a loop to it, and he's getting under a lot of balls. Not many LDs yet.

485 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:02 pm

[480] I know. But, over the next month, we'll be putting a lot of wear on the Shoulder that Hurls the Cutter. Save an inning now, save an inning next week, it might matter. And Wood looked so damned good.

486 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:02 pm

[484] He looks a little anxious with his swing, too.

487 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:02 pm

Pointless to bring in Mo. All it does is allows the Twins who are already defeated to go up there with nothing to lose.

488 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:03 pm

Bring in Burnette!

489 The Hawk   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:03 pm

I wonder if Kerry Wood could become an effective starter.

490 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:03 pm

Well, here we go

491 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:03 pm

The Yellow Pages should really rethink their web domain. Y P? Because I had a few beers.

492 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:04 pm

[480] So, even with a day off, if we NEED him in game #3, you're OK with 3 appearances in 4 days? And what about game #4? Mo is 40. We have a 3 run lead. And Mo would be there, just in case.

493 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:04 pm

[489] I think Wood the starter = AJ 2

494 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:04 pm

[491] That one caught me off guard.

495 weeping for brunnhilde   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:04 pm

Here we go...

496 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:04 pm

[480] But he already had to warm up, so he might as well go in.

497 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:05 pm

[478] Thanks. If Emma or Diane does the write up, they're free to use it. I have no power over puns.

498 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:05 pm

Am I comment 500?

499 The Hawk   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:05 pm

[493] Maybe he's matured though.

[484] [486] He's killed the Twins so much over the years in division series . . . if he doesn't do so this time, that's probably OK. I think he'll be fine.

How was Wood vs LHB this year? With Mauer and Thome up, I am very much OK with the Sandman and his lefty-killing repertoire in.

Win tonight. Worry about the other games later.

Shaun, you are in charge tonight!

513 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:09 pm

These announcers really seemed pissed that the Yankees are winning.

514 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:09 pm

Poifect Mo, Just poifect

515 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:09 pm

Amazing how that blue screen doesn't function in the bottom of innings.

516 Just Fair   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:09 pm

[504] Cheers.
Y'all are just being contrarian about leaving Mo out of tonight's 9th. i can't believe it really. : )

517 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:09 pm

And thus spoke THE MO: "Lo! When a batter gets a broken bat bloop single, I can remove him with a ground ball double play, for I am MO."

518 RIYank   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:09 pm

Got 'em.

519 NYYfan22   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:09 pm

Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Yankees Wiiin!

526 Mattpat11   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:10 pm

Nine more wins! Clinch the ALDS in front of me on Saturday

527 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:10 pm

Sheesh, I expect that if they showed these announcers on screen, they'd all be wearing black with top hats.

528 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:10 pm

[512] I could use something going right! =)

Praise Be To Mo.

[513] They do seem to be a little less exuberant than when Mauer singled. Maybe that's because they wanted a closer game. Or not.

529 felix holt   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:10 pm

That's right motherfuckers. Now it's up to Hughes to put the broom to these pricks.

530 The Hawk   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:10 pm

I feel sorry for the Twins. I can't help it.

531 rbj   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:11 pm

Good night all!

A very good night.

532 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:11 pm

I vote for Shaun P. as the blog chat MVP.

If Pettitte keeps this up, he is going to find himself in the Hall of Fame.

534 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:13 pm

Praise be to Shaun!

535 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:13 pm

Only NL baseball for a day.

536 yankintexas   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:14 pm

[533] He should be there on his playoff resume alone.

537 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:15 pm

[503] That's Diane's job >;)

500+ comments... now that's Yankee baseball.

Okay, back to the script and 4am wake-up call...

538 Professor Longnose   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:17 pm

Goodnight, all! See you Saturday, if possible.

539 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:20 pm

[533] I think he might make it as he is now . . . but I do wonder if the lure of hte Hall will bring Andy back for one more year.

"Sir Lancelot rides to the rescue! C'est lui! C'est lui!"

Yeah, he seddit. Oy...

541 Chyll Will   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:34 pm

...and speaking of Oy, how about this bit out of Tampa... I guess we have a good idea why they're down 2-0 besides the fact that the Rangers starters have owned them like a ten-year old Ford.

We complain about Girardi's bullpen roulette, but how about Maddon's roster roulette? Hopefully he doesn't give Joe any ideas. One thing seems clear, looks like the Yanks really did dodge a bullet letting Navarro go...

542 JeremyM   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:38 pm

[541] I saw that, pretty disappointing from Navarro, but makes it pretty clear to see why he hasn't lived up to his potential.

543 Shaun P.   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:38 pm

[541] 'Course, now the Yanks are almost drowning in catching prospects, so that makes the sting of Navarro's long-ago loss less.

Good night all!

How much do I love Andy Pettitte in October? (Let me count the ways...)

Agree with those posting above that Cash looked awfully good tonight with the stars.

I thought the pitchers-in-the-booth were okay except for one thing that pissed me off. They made SO much of the TBS pitchtrack showing that Pavano to Lance inside kissed the rectangle BUT ... the plate ump's game all night had been to give 2-3 inches off the plate and squeeze inside. All night. Even on that at-bat it was clear that an earlier called strike was way away. So why aren't smart commentators saying that? Analyzing the ump's zone? It wasn't until the post-game interview on TBS that Berkman said it, loud and clear: he was generous away and tight inside and we reacted accordingly. In fact a pitch of Mo's in the 9th (to Mauer I think) was exactly where Pavano's was ... and was called a ball.

Now the Rays, they had a beef with that Young check swing. (And we wanted 5 games there with Lee vs Price in the 5th).

545 williamnyy23   ~  Oct 7, 2010 9:49 pm

[544] Here's is Wendlestedt's strike zone in picture form: http://tinyurl.com/29xhwmv.

The Twins have nothing to complain about.

546 JeremyM   ~  Oct 7, 2010 10:00 pm

Yankees win, check.

My Huskers murderizing K-State, check.

547 Jon DeRosa   ~  Oct 7, 2010 10:01 pm

Just cuz you the ump misses a call, doesn't mean you have to let up a double on the next pitch. My Twins-fan friend is trying to figure out if Gardy gave up or was thought his team needed some firing up.

NPUT.

Just finished watching the win (I had plans to go out earlier so dvred the game). Way to go Yankees!!!
