Yo, dropped some ducats at Katz Deli yesterday for the film crew and I got a Turkey/Swiss; it took me two days to finish it! Even so, we've had this argument here several times about which is better, Katz, Carnegie, Stage or 2nd Ave and I would like to add to the fold Torrisi Cafe on Mulberry and Prince Sts.; their homemade turkey subs are off the charts good (and less pricey than Katz[!]) and just as thick.
I brought one home for my roommate and her fiance and they nearly fell out of their chairs. "Where did you get this from??" They immediately made an appointment to pursue this matter further...
[2] Yeah, I hear that a lot from people, Katz is the best for pastrami. Funny story: one of the crew guys wanted a pastrami on a hero and asked for both mayo and mustard. Now I don't care for pastrami, but I know you just don't put mayo on it under any circumstances and I looked at him funny. But he insisted, so I wrote it down and went to Katz.
The guy behind the counter took the orders and when he heard the pastrami order, he looked at me funny and said, "you want the mayo and mustard on the side, right?" I backed up and said, "Hey that's not me, I want the turkey and swiss!" and we both laughed.
I do have to wonder about 2nd Ave, though. And Torrisi's is a smaller place, but their turkey's better if you like spice; it's hard to compare since they're a little different.
That I can do...

Carnegie and Stage aren't in the running anymore. For Pastrami, I think Katz is the best of that bunch.
