The White Sox had a nine run lead entering the eighth inning. Now it's a Save situation, thanks in part to Brian Bruney. Chris Sale in for the one-out Save.
Really the game should be over -- a fan interfered with a fly ball play, but the umpires missed it and the hit went for a double.

A-Gon strikes out on three pitches to end it.

3 TheGreenMan   ~  May 31, 2011 10:04 pm

I dig the Big Wheel.

4 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 31, 2011 10:04 pm

[2] Imagine Ozzie's reaction if they lost THAT one..

[0] Quiet Banter tonight due to the late west coast start, but Mr. OK Jazz TOKYO is here to provide witty asides and jazzy links.

And, GO GO Heat!

5 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:06 pm

LET'S GO YANKEES!!!

6 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:07 pm

18!!!

ZOMBIE JETER!

7 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:07 pm

[3] Indeed!

8 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:08 pm

GRANDYMAN!!!

KEVIN LONG!!!

10 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:11 pm

That looked fair ... on the line.

11 RIYank   ~  May 31, 2011 10:11 pm

Amazing.
I was just thinking, "Well, I'll watch a few batters, but I probably won't see any scoring."

12 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:11 pm

I missed 18, but I saw the next two hits

13 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:11 pm

3 batters, 3 hard hit balls ... me likey!

14 OldYanksFan   ~  May 31, 2011 10:12 pm

Christ.... ARod looks just terrible at the plate.

15 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 31, 2011 10:12 pm

Granderson keeps this up and he "may" surpass Mayfield as my favorite all-time Curtis!

16 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:13 pm

[1] Brian Bruney is back in the big leagues?

...

Why?

17 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:13 pm

[15] Gonna have to go with Curtis Wright ...

18 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:14 pm

[16] He still throws hard?

Front offices will always be velo whores ...

19 RIYank   ~  May 31, 2011 10:15 pm

[16] Teams need Save situations. That was his job on the Yankees, as I recall: to help Mo get Save situations.

20 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:17 pm

[18] I just have horrible memories of the mid 2000s bullpens where the Yankees built bullpens around pitchers who walk guys. Bruney, Farnsworth, Veras, Ramirez, it seemed like there was a near constant supply of mediocre pitchers with no location ready to come in.

21 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:18 pm

Fat Freddy Fifth Flinger!

22 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:20 pm

I'm hoping for a nice like four hit game from Jeter tonight to up my (slim) chances of seeing number 3000 on June 9

23 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 10:23 pm

That was a pretty turn by Cano. He's so smooth.

24 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:24 pm

Ugh.

4 for 13 is "heating up"?

25 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 10:24 pm

Yahoo! My 11:00 just cancelled. I can watch the game with impunity while I'm "working."

26 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:25 pm

[24] It's .308

27 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:26 pm

Andruuw Jones was put on this earth to torment Weeping, methinks ...

28 RIYank   ~  May 31, 2011 10:27 pm

Oy.

29 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:27 pm

Bah, Cornflake.

30 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:28 pm

Eh. It happens

31 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 31, 2011 10:28 pm

[25] Nice to be 社長! That's ok, I'm following online while I am "busy working" too.

Is the Oakland Coliseum the worst current stadium? Seats look miles away, feels soul-less..

32 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:29 pm

[31] It probably is, but if you wanted even more reason to hate it, its now the "Overstock.com Coliseum"

33 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:30 pm

[31] LOVE the foul territory.

34 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 10:32 pm

[32] Possibly the worst stadium name ever conceived.

35 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 10:33 pm

JFC!

36 RIYank   ~  May 31, 2011 10:33 pm

[31] According to Nate Silver (or anyway, his methodology), it's second to the Rogers Centre.

37 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:34 pm

[34] Even if it was just the "Overstock Coliseum" it would be bad, but acceptable.

38 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  May 31, 2011 10:37 pm

[34] Seriously? Do the announcers actually say the ".com" part? That is horrid! For all the money-grubbing the Stein Bros do, at least it's still "Yankee Stadium".

39 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:37 pm

[36] I've been wanting to go to Skydome for a long time. I think it looks kind of nice.

And I really liked Nationals Stadium.

Although, upon closer review, the rating seems to be for RFK, which was a dump.

40 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 10:38 pm

LOVE the foul territory.

41 OldYanksFan   ~  May 31, 2011 10:38 pm

Zen Master of the infield single!

42 Chyll Will   ~  May 31, 2011 10:39 pm

[34] Well, it's probably tied with Minute Maid Park and Enron Field (boy, Houston can really pick em, huh?)

43 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:39 pm

Thats a hit?

44 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:40 pm

[36] There ain't no there, there ... at least when it came to the "methodology" ...

45 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:40 pm

Meh. Outside.

46 Just Fair   ~  May 31, 2011 10:40 pm

Foot outside Cousins. You suck.
Jeter should be 0-2. This is the big leagues for Mo' Sake!

47 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:41 pm

[42] Turns out ... no.

48 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 10:41 pm

The umpire just got Granderson out.

49 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:42 pm

[45] I don't have a problem with his first hit, that was hit hard and came up a nasty hop.

50 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:43 pm

LINE DRIVE IN THE BOXSCORE!!!

51 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:43 pm

I'll take it

52 Just Fair   ~  May 31, 2011 10:44 pm

[48] E4 all the way, cult. Hard hit and nasty hop be damned. ; )

53 OldYanksFan   ~  May 31, 2011 10:45 pm

[36] Yankee Stadium is rated 21 of 30? For 1.5 billion dollars?
Is that a fair representation?

54 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 31, 2011 10:46 pm

[38] That could never happen, there is only Yankee Stadium. That title is worth the $50+ naming rights that would sully it.

And, there can only be Dodger Stadium too. That's another non-negotiable.

[15] Mayfield is still my favorite too, with Tony a close second. If Granderson keeps this up for a few more years, he might get in the lead.

"Curtis, Curtis, how could it be, you loved all those Rounders, but you didn't love me, she's all I've got, she's gone". My favorite Curtis lyric.

55 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:47 pm

Don't run on Gritner.

56 Just Fair   ~  May 31, 2011 10:48 pm

Get a stck and kill it, Swish!

57 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:48 pm

[51] We'll just have to agree to agree that me and the official scorer are right.

=)

58 OldYanksFan   ~  May 31, 2011 10:48 pm

Man.... he all but jogged to 1st, and then is thrown out at 2nd? Terrible, terrible baserunning.

59 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:48 pm

That was a horrendous effort from Swisher

60 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 10:49 pm

Cue circus music.

61 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:50 pm

If Jeter gets, say, 2998 on the road, do you start moving things around to try to get him home for the hit?

62 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:50 pm

That's Nick Swisher, an above average glove in RF ... until he really, REALLY isn't.

63 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 10:52 pm

was the one loss against the A's that awful Brett Tomko game?

64 OldYanksFan   ~  May 31, 2011 10:52 pm

Think we will even see a Yankee with braids or dreds? Peyes maybe?

65 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 31, 2011 10:53 pm

[61] He's really scuffling, and it breaks the heart to see that free spirit pressing. He might have to quietly go away,

66 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 31, 2011 10:53 pm

[61] He's really scuffling, and it breaks the heart to see that free spirit pressing. He might have to quietly go away,

67 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 31, 2011 10:54 pm

Look! The magic double post! How does that happen?

68 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 10:55 pm

[63]Billy called it the "no beards, no beads" rule. How about, "no beards, no dreds."?

69 Just Fair   ~  May 31, 2011 10:56 pm

[56] I'm only giving you a hard time. I get more worked up over official scorer's decisions than most. lol....

70 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 10:56 pm

[65] I'd think that Cletus is ahead of him in that line ...

71 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 10:57 pm

Tom Hanks?

GODDAMN FUCKING CORNFLAKE.

74 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 11:02 pm

Why on earth would we squeeze here?

75 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 11:02 pm

How could he miss that?

76 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 11:02 pm

[72] Unless it was a squeeze.

In which case ... JOEY JOE JOE!?!?!?!?!?

77 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 11:04 pm

He's obviously doomed to strikeout now.

78 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 11:05 pm

17

79 cult of basebaal   ~  May 31, 2011 11:05 pm

[68] Well, can we agree that *that* one was a hit?

80 The Hawk   ~  May 31, 2011 11:06 pm

Bad night for Swisher on the base paths!

81 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 11:06 pm

That was a weird play.

82 OldYanksFan   ~  May 31, 2011 11:07 pm

Jeter could make some REAL money teaching players how to get infield hits.

83 Just Fair   ~  May 31, 2011 11:08 pm

Curtis is awesome.

84 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 11:11 pm

Yes! Thank you.

85 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 31, 2011 11:22 pm

The way Freddy and Tolo are pitching, maybe the Yanks should sign Pedro Martinez for a try?

He still wants to come back. Always a hit, always a threat...

86 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 11:24 pm

I thought they should have made a run at Pedro a few years back

87 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 31, 2011 11:25 pm

The Yankees could have their own version of the three tenors.

88 Just Fair   ~  May 31, 2011 11:28 pm

Cano. No doubter!

89 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 11:28 pm

So much for lefties not hitting XBH off Anderson

90 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 11:31 pm

I've had that big toenail injury, where the nail has to be punctured to let out the blood. It hurts like hell. I was on crutches for a week. I can't believe he's not limping.

91 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 31, 2011 11:32 pm

[89] He's a tough hombre that Martin.

92 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 31, 2011 11:33 pm

In other news, Miami pulling away with three minutes left.

93 Just Fair   ~  May 31, 2011 11:37 pm

That's not good.

94 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 11:37 pm

Okay, lets keep it here

95 Boatzilla   ~  May 31, 2011 11:37 pm

Wasted the triple.

96 kenboyer made me cry   ~  May 31, 2011 11:38 pm

Just what was needed, the rally killer.

97 Just Fair   ~  May 31, 2011 11:43 pm

I've noticed lately that whoever catches a third out usually flips it to a nearby teammate. Even in the outfield. I don't recall seeing this much in the past.

98 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 11:45 pm

Well, that bat switch wasn't needed.

99 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 11:46 pm

Jeter seems to be getting a walk and a hit every game these days

100 Chyll Will   ~  May 31, 2011 11:47 pm

Should I like this game? It's like snacking on a veggie platter when you really want cookies...

[100] Attempted fragging?

103 Just Fair   ~  May 31, 2011 11:50 pm

Sweep tag and Jeter's out. Too damn close.

104 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 11:54 pm

Yankees raised Anderson's ERA .70 points.

Seems like everyone is doing their job tonight.

106 Mattpat11   ~  May 31, 2011 11:55 pm

Beautiful!

Man, the A's look bad.

112 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 1, 2011 12:00 am

[107] Was it really 500ft? I thought 475? Still ridiculously far.

Wasn't the original "Death Valley" in Yankee Stadium 440ft? I don't know why they still call it that, 399 is not exactly a crushed home run ball.

113 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 1, 2011 12:02 am

[107] and 20,000 leagues below sea level.

114 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 1, 2011 12:06 am

[111] It sure looks crushed. Hitting it out in dead center has got to be almost as exhilarating as crushing it to the upper decks...

[111] 487 in 1923.

[115] The 1970s renovation? Am sure they brought it even closer in the 80s. Would love to see them go back to 487..after A-Rod retires, of course!

121 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 1, 2011 12:31 am

[119] Yeah, they brought it as close as 408.

Hey all. Just got in and caught the last inning or so.

Go Yanks!

124 NYYfan22   ~  Jun 1, 2011 12:59 am

I'd like to think that if David DeJesus ever plays for the Yankees, John Sterling's HR call for him would be, "It is high.. It is far.. It is GONE! Aww David! No one effs with De Jesus! ... and the Yankees take a 4-0 lead".

125 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 1, 2011 1:04 am

[123] Good one! Or how about, "Now that's what DeJesus would do!"

126 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 1, 2011 1:29 am
