Three-quarters of the Yankees’ infield have been voted to start the All-Star Game (Mark Teixeira will have to settle for finishing behind Adrian Gonzalez who is the best player in the American League). Curtis Granderson has also been voted as a starter. Russell Martin and Mariano Rivera are also in. Meanwhile, Ivan Nova has been sent down to the minors. Looks as if Phil Hughes is back and they want to keep Nova pitching regularly.
It is rainy in New York so the game might take a while. Here’s the line-up:
Brett Gardner LF
Curtis Ganderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Russell Martin C
Ramiro Pena SS
Freddy Garcia RHP
Never mind the hangover:
Let’s Go Yank-ees!
Hey team!
Hm, the Yankees haven't lost since I left the country. Guess I'll stay out for a while.
Go Yankees!
[1] Go away!
No Robertson on the All Star. Rain delay right now.
No C.C. either. That's harder to figure.
Nova goes down to the minors and Shit-Tre is still here? WTF????
OK, was listening to the Giants-Tigers game while mowing the lawn. Giants lead off hitter gets a double, against a struggling Rick Porcello. So what does the Giants manager do? He has the second hitter of the game, not of the inning or that side of the lineup, but of the game, against a scuffling pitcher, sacrifice the lead off guy to third. I think that angered the baseball gods, as the next guys had a strikeout & ground out. Who the hell has the second hitter of the game sacrifice a guy when he's already in scoring position?
[5] picking up Mitre all but guaranteed that Nova would be sent down.
[3] [4] the fewer Yankees on the ASG roster, especially pitchers, the better IMO.
Any word on how long the delay will last?
You forgot the kicker, rbj, the Giants scored 15 runs yesterday
Pretty disappointed that Nova's going down, but those are the breaks, I guess. I hope AJ pitches great the rest of the year, because but for his contract, the odd man out should have been him.
[10] One could also make the case that Hughes should have been the odd man out.
[11] You're in Germany right now, right mp?
Nova will be back soon enough. Better to have him continue to start games rather than to get out of whack sitting in the pen.
My wife took one look at Cone, Kay and Leiter and said, "Is Cone an alcoholic?"
[12] yep.
when does this damn game start??
15) Couple of minuts.
[15] What's the local reaction to the Women's World Cup that's going on right now?
17) The what...No, it seems to be mild. Very cool to see Djokovic beat Nadal today.
[18] You're in Germany too?
Knuckler was dancing for R.A. there...
Pagan doesn't look like he smiles a lot.
[18] I just can't get into Men's Tennis anymore, though I used to love watching Wimbledon when I was a kid. They ought to make like College Baseball and limit racket head size and rebound velocity.
I'd love to see a tournament with today's best players using only wooden rackets, though, that would be fun to watch.
What's it with this "Claw" shit? The Rangers did it last year. What is this, college ball?
22) I disagree. I just miss the personal nature of the old rivalries. Love watching Nadal and Feds. Great players.
[23] what do you mean? no volume here.
[17] I'm in one of the host cities. I guess there is some excitement that the German team is good, but to be honest I have not noticed an overabundance of excitement. It is certainly nothing like it was last year when I was here for a few days during the mens World Cup, where there public viewing centers set up around town, and you could here people watching (i.e., when Germany scored you could here people cheering on the street and in the neighboring houses). Then again, to be fair, I don't pay any attention to the sport myself, and I certainly don't watch German TV (which is appallingly bad), so maybe there is more buzz over the womens WC than I have noticed.
[24] Tennis thrives when there are compelling rivalries between gret players.
[22]] I agree: back to wooden rackets, which would (I think) encourage more volleying and take away some from the crazy serve velocities.
[24] Agreed, and Djokovic has some charisma, so its great to see him emerge as a serious champion.
Heavyweight boxing, on the other hand...phew, it stinks.
Coney dropping the "sabermetric wisdom"!
[28] Boxing has gone downhill since they shortened the fights to 12 rounds. Or maybe I've just grown less interested in the sport.
[30] There just seems to be a dearth of good heavyweights. The fight yesterday was a boring abomination. Who on Earth wants to see more of the Klitschkos? Haye is a joke.
R.A. looking good.
31) The fight was also brutal to watch because in the wide shot you could see the electronic camera roving over the fighters. You see that in the NFL too. But here it was really distracting.
[33] Alex, I don't think either fighter landed a combination. It was ugly.
Man, that's brutal. Other than Manny P, there are no fighters I'd pay to see. Certainly no heavyweights.
[26] Interesting, thanks!
I loved watching boxing as a kid. But it must have something to do with growing up but the idea of two guys brutalizing each other just doesn't interest me. I get that there is a lot of skill involved but it still disinterests me.
a-rod!
[31],[33]
I do think the sport was more interesting when the fights were 15 rounds. I know that the boxers' safety is an important consideration, but the shorter fights have lessened the importance of working the body, and you just don't seem to have those epic, attritive and strategic battles any more.
[36] Yikes, I kept typing "here" for "hear". Trying to do too many things at once...
I predict that by the end of the Year, Martin will be the worst hitter among the starters, and that includes Jeter.
R.A. Dickey is bringing the fustigation so far ...
Garcia may have had the best swing yet of any Yankee batter.
Oh, and Dickey with a base hit.
I love that NL-no-DH-pitchers-hit-for-themselves baseball!
Ah, there's our strategy against Dickey, making him run the bases to wear him out ...
[45] Right. Now, if they can just maneuver him into a collision at home.
So, why not throw over to first, like, 568 times? That would have to take a toll on the pitcher-runner, no?
Has Kay always said DRIVEN over and Over and OVER again, or is that some new annoyance he's added this year?
If he's been saying it and I was just missing it, my god, sometimes ignorance IS bliss, because now that I'm aware of it, it's DRIVING me insane ...
Okay, so how's bout...a base runner?
[47] It would, if Dickey hadn't been taking a lead of approximately 1 foot.
Dag, snuck the heater passed Gritner on 3-2.
[48] Aren't you glad I brought it up a couple of weeks ago?
Baseball Runner #1.
Run Curtis, run!
OK, with two outs Grandy has to be running. He should just take off on first move.
And there's yer stolen base.
KNuts.
[52] "After such knowledge, what forgiveness?"
-T.S. Eliot
Driven out to RCF!
[59] At this rate, it really ought to be its own drinking game ...
Hell of a throw.
BODIE!
Great jump, better throw!
pastadivingpena!
Excellent play all around.
And there's the first hit!
Yay.
oh nick don't bunt
goodness
Yes!
CORNFLAKE!
Game tied. This may warrant cracking open the last Radeberger Pilsner in the fridge.
Which is more virtuous, a sac bunt with a runner on 2B no outs, or an unselfish RBI single back up the middle?
Man, Russ just missed that.
"High drive, left field..."
Ooooh, variation on a theme.
Meet the Mets ...
It takes a very steady hand...BUZZZZ. Butterfingers.
OK, the term "Death Valley" should never be used when describing LCF at New Yankee Stadium or Old Yankee Stadium post-1985.
That's funny: the camera showing Nuñez's reaction to the Mets fumbling the ball around the middle infield.
Now, this is a spot for Gritner to bunt.
Yikes, that's a hell of hitless streak for Gritner ...
Hey you guys see that little yellow butterfly? I'm not joking it was just there near the mound.
Big AB for Grandy.
[82] ?
Emory board? Sandpaper?
Tough 1-1 pitch. Tough pitch.
Good eye. Fastball won't get him out here. A knuckle ball will.
Ooooooooh.
That was a swing.
Fuck.
Dammit.
Oh well.
Looks like R.A. is a goner.
Huh ... ok, thanks for pulling Dickey.
Lovely.
This is a weird move, unless Dickey is hurt. Two outs, none on is a very, very low leverage position to use (waste?) a PH. Heck, it might be worth batting Dickey and then pull him, saving the batter.
Hm. Is Collins also a Chessmaster™?
That was one ugly AB.
Driven...
Man, Alex swung through a meatball.
Driven!
Oops.
They sure do have one big-ass stadium in Flushing.
Do the Yankees employ a baserunning coach?
[103] Martin's obviously been spending too much time picking Posada's brain ...
(Not that I'm complaining, mind you, I'm all for home runs being hard to hit, needless to say.)
I'm running out gushing praise for Rob's defense.
It's just breathtaking, day in, day out.
GRITNER!
OK, they must score here. It would be the moral thing to do.
Beautiful, Brett, beautiful!
YAaaaayyyyYYYY!
DRIVEN DEEEEEEP!
TESH!
[108] Triples are especially moral, you have to put in an extra effort to get one!
[113] Hear, hear! :)
[111] If my fist was DRIVEN DEEP into Michael Kay's face, would a jury of my peers convict me?
That was a poor 3-0 swing by Swish, from his heels. We didn't need a three-run dinger, we needed an insurance run.
Sigh.
RI, you're missing your boy again!
Jeez, Swish.
One man up, one K for Robertson.
THE ALABAMA HAMMER!
Robertson's velo has been 93-95 recently.
With his leverage, that's gotta look 96-98.
Smokin ...
Man, this guy is pitching. That was a Mo swing right there.
Oh, man, first pitch hook. That's so not fair!
Damn.
Mo.
Bring in Mo.
What a revoltin' development.
Damn, NAST slider.
WOW!!
BRAVO!!!
Gee, don't make it easy for yourself, or us David.
Y
Fooled him with the old fastball down the middle.
[124] Calmo, as the Italians say.
Never mind the BBs, here's the all-star!
Eh, it's look youse people have never seen Robertson pitch.
It's not like he doesn't have innings like that with some regularity ...
=)
[131] :)
[133] You're totally right, I lost my head for moment.
Another run here would be grand, indeed.
It most certainly would.
Meh.
Now, Mo!
Strike one.
Jesus!!!
Goddamn, what pitch!
Just plain gorgeous.
Weak-ass tapper!
Damn, juuuust missed!
Damn it, damn it.
Um, this isn't looking so good.
"I guess that missed." Yeah.
FUCK
Frak!
FUCKING FUCK FUCK.
No two out walks, OK?
FUGH. I didn't want to say anything, but somehow, this just felt like one of those games ...
C'mon Mo, limit the damage.
Ah, be careful what we wish for.
Geez, bad time for an error, but yay Gardner!
[151] I thought so too.
Oh wow. I figured the game was over.
Peña = very bad
Gardner = very good
shit fuck piss. But it ain't over yet.
Peña and Cervelli are really battling to see who can make me like him less.
Now that robertson and Mo are done, who is the next out of the pen? Ayala?
Why would you throw anything but changeups to Texeira?
Yeah, Ayala.
We need a big single here.
Jorgie, I'm talking to you.
I fucking LOVE Robbie.
Damn, what a hit.
Robbie! Now get him in.
Wow, wish that had been Gardner running right there.
I mean, Russell.
Martin gets it done here, calling it now
[162] What, Cano's "big single" wasn't enough?
=)
Alright Bodie, time for a big hit!
ignore my last comment
This game's over.
I really wish Swish had just thought middle of the field on that 3-0 count in the eighth.
Awesome, I sure do LOVE lead-off walks, ESPECIALLY in extra innings ...
safe
Jesus.
Well, at least that set up an inning ending double play ...
[160] Here comes your boy, friend.
good hook by girardi
[177] good hook by NOgan
Can you fucking believe this shit?
My God.
I have this feeling that Logan will escape here only to have the game lost by Pendleton or...Mitre.
Can we make Pena go away now?
Peña should be cut immediately after the game.
[181] See {158]. We may have a winner.
I'm calling it right now, Noesi is going to get the win!
Oh well.
Two out of three ain't bad.
[184] Or not.
Wow, that was a quick slap down from the Universe ...
Oh well.
Cut Pena.
That's what can happen when you think middle of the field.
Can someone explain to me why Pena was even in this game, leaving the Yankees hottest hitter on the bench.
Fuck me!
I stepped out for a minute and the game is over. Awesome.
I guess even God takes Sunday off....
[189] Nunez tweaked his hammy during the game yesterday.
[188] The ball gets by Ramiro Pena?
Well that sucked.
[191] Nah, sometimes he just chooses to shine his beneficence upon the poor, downtrodden and miserable. You know, Mets fans ...
[189] The propaganda machine claims that Nuñez tweaked his hamstring yesterday, and given Girardi's love of awful players and his penchant for r-e-s-t-i-n-g everyone, the script wrote itself.
Saw that coming.
[196] It's all water under the bridge now, but quote is from LoHud:
• Eduardo Nunez said his tight right hamstring feels much better today. He was hoping to play. “I feel sad,” he said. “I don’t play today, and I can play.”
