And it appears that the Yankees have called up some AA pitcher and place Mitre on the DL (pulled suck muscle or something). For this we are all a little bit Lucky™.

[1] I figured Garrison was called up because he was on the 40-man roster, and available to pitch sans restrictions (Pendleton started a couple of days ago, Whelan has thrown a lot the last three days).

However, I did note that the Yanks do seem to have an open 40-man spot still. They could have called up Kontos.

[1] Does that mean that whenever he throws a strike it's a Lucky™ Strike?

4 Bruce Markusen   ~  Jul 19, 2011 7:00 pm

Garrison's numbers were awful at Double-A, an ERA over 6.00. This guy is supposed to be a major leaguer? Why do the Yankees continue to populate the bottom of their roster with non-major leaguers? Cervelli, Pena (who's on the DL), and now Garrison.

5 Shaun P.   ~  Jul 19, 2011 7:11 pm

[4] Because he's a lefty? Because he couldn't possibly be worse than Lucky™ Strike Mitre, and we all know Girardi won't hesitate to go to Mitre, so it doesn't really matter how crappy the guy is who took his spot?

Its a good question, Bruce, my snarky attempts at answers aside.

From LoHud:

More than anything, Garrison is here to serve as a long man. Girardi said he might use him if a few lefties are due up, but mostly he’s here to give the Yankees length if they need it. He was scheduled to start tomorrow, so he’s rested and available tonight. The only other long relief-type on the 40-man is Lance Pendleton, who started for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday. The other Triple-A starters have no relief experience.

Nice slide Grandy!

8 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 7:21 pm

I can't remember the last time one of our guys was CS.

9 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 7:24 pm

Rays are fish, boys.

10 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 7:34 pm

Nice work, Russell.

11 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 7:36 pm

Well, that was much better than Fat Bastard's last 1st inning ...

12 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 7:37 pm

Welcome to Fisher-Price "My First Ballpark"!

Stay, Cletus, stay!

Man, GGBG is just smoking hot right now.

16 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 7:50 pm

Well, that was an ugly swing ... yikes.

17 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 19, 2011 7:59 pm

Bartman looks good tonight.

18 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:02 pm

I know the Rays aren't a great hitting team but Colon looks more comfortable tonight.

19 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:04 pm

[18] I wonder if they should try a bunt or two, see if he's really all that confident in his hamstring.

20 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:08 pm

Ahhhh, that's our Rob!

21 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:08 pm

ROBBIE GO BOOM!

22 rbj   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:09 pm

Cano!

23 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:13 pm

Huh? Is that Ed Nuñe5???

24 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:13 pm

NUNE5!!!

25 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:14 pm

Kyle Weiland is not having a good time in Baltimore. I guess Kenny and David just mentioned that.

26 Shaun P.   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:16 pm

[23] Ed Nuñe5???

Huh? This is what happens when I take months between game threads.

27 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:17 pm

[26] Read the last two characters, just the two of them...

28 Shaun P.   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:19 pm

[27] Ahhh . . . now I feel like a dummy. Quite appropriate, sadly.

29 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:19 pm

Nice! A little high cheese past that rat Longoria. Suck on it, Toolshed!

30 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:20 pm

19) Yeah, a little surprised they haven't.

31 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:38 pm

Jeter just can't get the ball out of the infield.

32 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:43 pm

Fat Man is starting to trust his hammy again.

33 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:44 pm

[31] Sad!

34 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:48 pm

Russtache!!!

35 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:49 pm

Sweet. Russell had that nice 2-3 earlier too -- good glove day for him.

36 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:50 pm

Dude, Russtachio is doing the Jay Jaffe Special.

37 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:53 pm

What I miss what i miss? Cano went crackle-crackle boom-boom and Colon is back? Anything else?

38 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:55 pm

[37] Ummmmmmm... no, that's about it. Russell Martin had a nice play and a CS. Cano's shot was a line drive to left center.

39 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 8:55 pm

Ripper was just robbed.

40 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:05 pm

That was interesting. Nunez fielded the ball and collected himself for a beat, so that he wouldn't rush the throw. Then he almost shanked the throw anyway. Go figure. Thank goodness for turf and for the Mark Teixeira.

41 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:08 pm

Funny, Hellickson threw 49 pitches in the first two innings. Now, he's just over 100 working in the seventh. He's good.

42 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:11 pm

Alex, I feel like Nuñez throws worse when he has time. Kind of a Knoblauch thing, maybe.

43 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:12 pm

Aceves takes over for the Sox in Camden Yards, bottom of the seventh inning 3-2 O's.

44 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:15 pm

42) Could be right. He's trying so hard, he's thinking.

Way to go, Gardy.

45 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:16 pm

Nice job by Nunie hanging tough.

46 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:17 pm

Way to lay off that 2-2 fastball.

47 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:18 pm

Great job. He didn't offer at that 3-2 change-up, the same pitch he whiffed on in his first ab.

48 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:20 pm

Crud.

49 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:21 pm

Ah, shit.

50 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:22 pm

Oh Derek ...

51 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:29 pm

Oh, no.
Chess.

52 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:29 pm

Shoot. He pitched well, though.

I have a bad feeling about this game...

53 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:30 pm

Uh, Boone Logan?

54 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:34 pm

Fuck!

Fisher Price "My First Ballpark."

Unbelievable.

55 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:34 pm

[52] see [12]

Unbelievable.

56 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:36 pm

Ace coughs up a two-run dinger. 5-2 O's.

57 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:36 pm

Followed by a solo shot! 6-2.

58 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:36 pm

Oh, fer cripes sake. Disgusting.

59 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:36 pm

Oh, Boone. You dipshit.

60 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:37 pm

Ouch.

That hurts.

61 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:37 pm

...a bad feeling.

62 mhoward120   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:38 pm

2 gane swing in the standings because of that shit

63 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:38 pm

64 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:39 pm

65 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:39 pm

66 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:41 pm

Think the Yanks miss Alex these days?

67 Diane Firstman   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:43 pm

evening folks

68 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:44 pm

Final: O's 6, Sox 2.

69 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:44 pm

Well that inning was a clusterfuck.

70 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:49 pm

Grrrrrrrrr.

71 Alex Belth   ~  Jul 19, 2011 9:52 pm

Frustrating.

72 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 10:05 pm

Well, this is it.
I could see a 2-run double by Brett, or maybe a PH dinger by Andruw.

73 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 10:13 pm

Interesting. I don't think I know what the rule is for 'quick pitch'.

Sigh. Not looking good now.

74 RIYank   ~  Jul 19, 2011 10:16 pm

Oh, good try, Russell.

Crud, good chance to gain a game on Boston and they blew it on that circus of an inning.

75 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 19, 2011 10:17 pm

Oh well, they were lucky last night with the walk-a-thon (what was Joe Maddon thinking leaving that poor rookie in there to die?). They'll get 'em tomorrow!

76 cult of basebaal   ~  Jul 19, 2011 10:17 pm

Blech.

That turned out ... poorly.
