The Bombers are back home. This weekend gives the A’s of Oakland. Cliff has the Preview.
Dreaming of relief from this heatwave, we stay inside, in the a.c., and drink cool, refreshing beverages as we cheer:

Just a wonderful day here in Pasadena.
82 degrees at present with a lovely breeze.
I don't think it's gotten above 90 degrees more than a handful of times so far all summer.
God, it's horrible out there. It's no joking around, man.
I was offered free tickets in section 321 for tomorrow ... I was actually GLAD I already had plans.
Already 900 pitches and a pep talk by Cervelli at the mound....come on guys, it's late here and I want to watch an inning or three before hitting the hay.
Already losing??
So I hear you guys are having some nasty weather over there..be safe everyone!
I have n irrational hatred of called strike threes.
[7] Steady, man.
Man, Curtis has been taking a beating recently ...
[8] Need coffee to wake up normal..you're on Weissbier time, yes?
[10] Yeah, but it's gonna be bedtime soon.
Hey look, a swinging strike three. That's much better, no?
Phil Hughes is failing to impress so far this evening.
I miss the Phil Hughes before the Yankees started developing him. Can we get that guy back?
Also, can the Yankees stop trying? They kind of suck
Those Batter's Eye seats are nothing to write home about .... and damn expensive for the view.
with Cahill on the mound, the Yanks can't afford to spot the A's more than 2
[13] Yeah, I miss that guy too. But fortunately for us the Yankees take the long view, and either trade away pitching prospects, or develop them to maximize their potential as set-up men. You must have faith in the process.
Wild speculation here..Red Sox vs. Phillies in the WS?
Cano's swing is beautiful.
Yikes...closer at 2B than expected.
no tag-up on that ball?
Bad running by Cano.
Damn.
[21] redundant statement, no?
Better to be lucky than good!
Nune5!!!
Hey, anyone know where to find a glossary of cliche baseball terms? Like "Run producer", "good baseball man" (recently fired mediocre manager), etc etc?
Buh-Rains!!
[16]You know, I was thinking that the Yankees stunning inability to develop a starting pitcher since Andy Pettitte was a bad thing, but I forgot about the setup man philosophy.
[21][23] and by Swish, who was past 2B.
[24] And now Cervelli thumbs his nose at me!
Did the A's run into each other there?
Small ball!!
Damn, the A's look like just an awful team all around..whatever happened to genius Billy Beane?
[27] And really, did they *develop* Andy Pettitte? He was called up because of a rash of injuries, and then he started winning and didn't stop. I always saw Pettitte as a happy accident more than the product of Yankee planning.
Ooops, out.
Jetes will probably GiDP to even things out though ...
STOP SLIDING INTO FIRST
[25]
Dickson's Baseball Dictionary
http://baseballdictionary.com/
Nunez, Cervelli and Jeter with hits in the same inning.
[35] Ya just can't..
[34] Thank you!!
Kay: "The A's are at double play depth."
Monkeypants: "Translation: Jeter is up."
Jeter: "F-U, Monkeypants."
[31] I guess that's fair. They didn't have time to overthink him.
Also, to be fair on the other side, Wang's flameout wasn't their fault.
where the heck was Jeter going?
The hell was he going?
Oh Jeter.
[31] What does it really mean to develop a pitcher, anyway?
[32] Turns out I was wrong, Jetes decided to RUNiDP instead ...
Hey, if anyone needs some comic relief, go check out the Mariners lineup tonight against the Sox. Poor King Felix..
37) LOL!
The Yankees surprise their fans with the "Everyone runs the bases like Posada" night
I got to stop firing up the grill at 7. I see I've missed 7 runs already. And Hughes at 47 pitches to start the 3rd. Sounds about right.
[45] Really, a beautiful tribute to a great and too often under-appreciated Yankee.
One of the more awkward stretches by a first baseman, but I'll take it. : )
Heck of a play by Cano.
That was a thing of beauty.
You're officially forgiven, Robbie, at least until your next escapade on the bases ...
[42] Increasingly, I have come to think that it means stunting their maturation in the minors with ridiculously low pitch counts and innings counts, and monkeying with their deliveries, in order to avoid injuries. Then watching them suffer injuries anyway, and never throw 200 innings before they are 39 y.o.
[42] As we've learned, it means to institute arbitrary rules, yanke them around between roles with no apparent plan, and leave them a middle reliever.
I heart Robbie!
That athleticism is why I think Robby could handle shortstop, if Yanks find it easier to find a replacement 2B rather than a SS.
Of course you know Paulie, that the *other* reason that other 2nd basemen don't make that play is that, well, that's what shortstops are for ...
Did Teix learn to run from Matsui?
[51][52] Double-barreled snark!
=)
[56] See [45], [47]
You know, I like Cano and all, but it might be a wee bit early to declare him a hall of famer.
Yeah, this is going well.
Hell fucking yeah! Swisher Swat!
CORNFLAKE GOES BOOM!
Bringing the O tonight!
d.e.e.p.
I love Swisher! Great smile!
The ball is flying in the OF tonight.
I guess Cahill is taking it for the team tonight.
[67] Bite your tongue.
Nune5 did not get the bad base running memo.
Jorge managed to navigate that potential baserunning fiasco.
dear mr. cameraman, please ... no more shots of suzuki adjusting his junk .... thanks
Wow, nice play by Suzuki there.
Hit a rally killer, Curtis.
Tell me where it Wuertz ...
Ugh.
Tonite's not a good night to be an A's fan.
For us though ...
One batter later. Oh, well......
By the time this inning is over, Hughes will need a guide dog to find the pitcher's mound.
Teix looks so dorky when he puffs his cheeks during exertion
OK, as fun as this is, it's not worth staying up any later. Throw strikes, Phil Hughes.
[78] My pop calls him the Little Engine That Could.
What in the world is that thing on Crisp's neck?
Ok, it's only the 3rd inning and Kay & O'Neil sound a bit loopy..time to do some chores.
Just need 6 outs for the "w" Hughsie.
Ugly pitching all around.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOghes!
[85] Roger, that.
I was beginning to have flashbacks to this Yankees/A's game:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA199804100.shtml
Another hit for Jetes.
What da... did the Score Truck get married and have a baby? (When I logged in, Kay said the A's were leading the Yanks, so I had to double check... moron!)
Fer fuck's sake Phil, can you please just get 3 more outs so we can get somebody else who doesn't have fuckall in there?!?!?
Gah.
Well, Kay has a wealth of trivial crap... hey, how is it that I'm I watching the game on TV?
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOghes.
You did it to yourself, Phil...
Unbelievable.
Ah, Noesi, let's hope he's got something tonite.
[93] ...but maybe the heat has something to do with it. This is the game get a chance to watch? I'm gonna go make dinner now, this is not a good look on either side.
If Coco's piercing was struck by lightning, he'd be fried to a Crisp.
Man, what an ugly night for Phil. This game is as brutal as the heat.
[98] What he said.
[98] And there's a day game tomorrow. That's going to be even worse.
That would have been amusing if Nune5 threw the ball away after already getting the 3rd out on the runner going to 3rd.
this is the longest night. At least the Yanks have a big lead...even if it is shrinking.
C'mon people, it's not the national anthem. It's a crap song by a crap singer. No need to take your hats off.
Kid's lucky he wasn't plunked! I wonder if they'll save the ball for him?
Juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust a bit outside ...
This is hilarious!
Well, at least Swish cashed a few of those walks in.
Congrats rook!
Awwww...
17 runs. What problems with the Yankee offense? Did I really write that?
Before tonight's game they had the second best runs/game of any team in baseball. They really only suffer by the inevitable comparison to Boston.
Relative to the league, they've pitched better than average as well.
Frankly, the team is pretty solid and there isn't much to complain about -- not that that will dissuade anyone from trying. They probably aren't the best team in baseball (or the league), but I'd be fairly surprised if they didn't make the playoffs.
I was at the game tonight! It was lovely, my first of the season. It was fun to watch all those hits but Christ, the man had a 9 run lead and couldn't get out of the fifth!
Oh, and I got to walk "home" afterwards, which was fabulous! (Staying with my dad, who lives just over the bridge between Broadway and Amsterdam. It's really cool to just walk away into the night.)
