"A New York Treasure" --Village Voice

Angels with Dirty Faces

The Yanks return to New York from Boston licking their wounds. Still, they’ve been playing well and here’s hoping that continues against those lousy Angels.

Lots of rain here in New York so there’s no telling if they’ll get this one in. But if they do, we’ll do the rootin’:

Let’s Go Yank-ees.

the yanks will miss weaver due to his suspension.
it'd be nice for the score truck to be in high gear.

From Lohud: 6:20 pm
----------------------------------
"The tarp just came off the field and it looks like there’s at least a chance of starting tonight’s game on time. I thought there was no chance just a few hours ago, but Joe Girardi said he’s been hearing that the game will probably be played."

4 rbj   ~  Aug 9, 2011 7:02 pm

So. . . are we going to see good A.J.?

5 SteveF   ~  Aug 9, 2011 7:06 pm

Arguably this is a more important series than the one they just got done playing. The Angels probably have their eyes set on the Rangers, but the Angels are the closest team to pushing the Yankees out of the playoffs.

The Red Sox are probably hoping for a Yankees sweep almost as much as Yankee fans.

6 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 9, 2011 7:22 pm

There's something ass backwards about Eric Chavez at DH and E, Nunez at third.

7 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 7:22 pm

He's not a man he's a machine.

8 Marek   ~  Aug 9, 2011 7:40 pm

What a lousy AB from Robbie.

9 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 9, 2011 7:46 pm

[6] It's an attempt to keep Chavez healthy.

10 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 9, 2011 7:49 pm

Teix can catch anything he can fall on. Great hands but not great range.

11 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 9, 2011 8:01 pm

Gardner: how many ball four pitches do you have to swing at?

12 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 9, 2011 8:08 pm

[9] A-Rod will be back in a week. Lets get all wild and trt to play Chavez in the field and keep the comedy stylings of Eduardo Nunez off it.

13 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 9, 2011 8:09 pm

[0] Love that still shot of James Cagney. Quite a punk rock look for the 1930's.

14 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 9, 2011 8:19 pm

[13] Cagney was fierce, all-time movie badass.

15 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 9, 2011 8:29 pm

[12] There's some "comedy stylings" for you!!!

16 cult of basebaal   ~  Aug 9, 2011 8:48 pm

Oh, AJ ... you SUCK.

17 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 9, 2011 8:54 pm

Scioscia still plays Wells and Mathis?

18 RagingTartabull   ~  Aug 9, 2011 8:58 pm

I don't think I've ever been more indifferent towards a player than I have been with Bobby Abreu...I have stronger feelings about crackers and water.

19 RIYank   ~  Aug 9, 2011 8:59 pm

Fuck intentional walks. That's all I have to say.

(I'm on the road and my computer access is terrible. Please hold down the fort. If possible.)

20 Marek   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:00 pm

what the hell just happened?

21 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:00 pm

Just good enough to lose, AJ. Nice work as always.

22 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:00 pm

Ejection? Why?

23 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:01 pm

Giving up XBH to Mathis is grounds for DFA. Imagine what the Sox will do to him in the playoffs???

24 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:04 pm

Two more years of AJ Burnett.

Have I said that before?

25 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:05 pm

[22] Scioscia has been yapping at the ump since the 1st batter of the game. He was punched out on a horrible check swing call. Plus the telecast reached its allotted showing of his mug 25 friggin' times and it's only the 6th inning.

26 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:06 pm

GET THIS FREAKING SISSY BITCH the heck out of the rotation.

ENOUGH.

We finally told Jorge to sit down? Tell this guy to kill himself.

He's pitching worse than five other pitchers.

Send him to AAA, send him to therapy, send him the FUCK out of the Bronx.

I am so sick of this guy's shit it's ridiculous.

We're trying to win games?

We can't afford to have this mental weakling in the rotation.

There are no complications with a six man rotation. One guy can't pitch. Boot that guy into outerspace.

Fuck, I hate AJ.

27 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:06 pm

Scioscia + AJ = only Gameday for me.

28 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:06 pm

[25] What are you talking about? That guy totally swung.

In other news, fuck AJ.

29 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:07 pm

[18] He's...nice, I guess.

30 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:11 pm

[28] The first batter of the game got jobbed. The check swing that got Scioscia ejected was definitely a swing.

31 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:13 pm

[30] I see what you were saying. Your sentence confused me, but I can see how it parses now.

Did I mention FUCK AJ?

What a big, sour-faced mound of shit.

32 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:15 pm

Can we get past the things that "are weird about AJ"???

Let him do some running with Kei Igawa in the outfield.

He's garbage. It's even more galling that he killed the Yanks when he was with the Jays.

33 Boatzilla   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:16 pm

[1] I absolutely LOVE that album. Fantastic. In fact, we should be listening to it instead of watching A-Shitass-J Burnout.

34 mhoward120   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:17 pm

(1) and (34) I agree - Saint Behind the Glass!

35 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:19 pm

Guys, it's not complicated. AJ is a choking bitch. Do we really need a deep dissection of all of this?

We've got a guy who is not a winning pitcher that we're trotting out to crap things up up once every five turns.

36 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:22 pm

Can anyone finally solve the riddle for me as to why we keep trotting out this Philly-related zeppelin for an unnecessary break in the 7th, and don't even let her finish the verse properly?

Listed under things, #7452, that drive jjmerlock crazy.

Man, I am so ticked off at AJ right now, my blood pressure has easily jumped 10 to 15 points.

37 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:29 pm

AJ's biggest weakness is between his ears.

AJ cruising right along, throwing fastballs for strikes, and looking like a fairly dominant pitcher. 5+ innings with no runs. He gives up a liner to Abreu that scrapes the rf wall for a NYS HR, and from then on; cannot figure out how to close out the inning. He crumbles; throws curves in the dirt, gives up walks, a wild pitch for a run, and a big hit from the under .200 Mathis to score two more. As if by design...4-1 Angels. I know we all witnessed it and his other adventures, but for how much longer? He's too sensitive, and I fear he may go postal. I think he needs a spell on the DL for a blister (or PTSD).

He should spend some of that $80+Million on intensive therapy.

38 Marek   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:31 pm

That's one back!

39 Marek   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:32 pm

[40] What does a turban have to do with it?

C'mon, enough with the death talk, it's enough that he sucks and we don't want him in the rotation.

40 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:33 pm

[40] Hey! That turban statement is a little out of line. Please chill.

41 Marek   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:34 pm

Guess the Angels heard Gardner takes a lot of strikes, too.

42 mhoward120   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:34 pm

(41) The point is that apparently the only way he gets taken out of the rotation is in a coffin

43 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:34 pm

[42][43] Methinks Mr. mhoward crossed that line a loooooong while back...

44 Marek   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:34 pm

I feel comfortable predicting that Jeter will not hit into a double play here.

45 RagingTartabull   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:35 pm

Ignore it and it will go away children

46 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:38 pm

[48] You mean AJ, right?? RIGHT??!!

47 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:38 pm

Fuck yeah!

48 RagingTartabull   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:38 pm

HE AIN'T DEAD YET!!

49 mhoward120   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:38 pm

(46) Agreed - and I be he

50 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:38 pm

[47] My man!

51 mhoward120   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:41 pm

My apologies to all NYC cab drivers - and anyone else who wears a turban

52 RagingTartabull   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:41 pm

Since coming back from the DL Jeter is at a .320/.374/.454 line over 24 games #JustSayin

53 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:42 pm

[48] Yeah, but a casual peruser might get the wrong impression of the Banter.

54 briang   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:43 pm

i wonder how the situation with posada is affecting derek jeter? i wonder how it's gonna go down at the end of DJ's career?....rhetorical question. who cares?....sweet shot up the middle, tie game in what felt pretty dreary a minute ago.

55 briang   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:45 pm

funny how i was just thinking that i usually like the tone of the commenting on this blog. bummer.

56 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:46 pm

[58] Stick around, briang, we're mostly a friendly bunch :)

57 briang   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:49 pm

i know...i won't let that one commentator get on my nerves.

pretty stoked on cary wade, obviously. i'm looking forward to rafael (i can't believe i'm thinking this) trying to get out of my dog house.

58 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:52 pm

I hope I'm walking *just* on the right side of that line.

mhoward, the rest is not ok (admittedly, sissy bitch may go too far, but I think perhaps is just as far as one can go), but the turban thing isn't even close to acceptable.

Oh, and fuck AJ. It's getting to the point where I'm only going to be watching him with the unwelcome assistance of toothpicks, or just my general moth to the flame brand of idiocy.

Seriously, AJ on "a tip" that's fixed things for him? Didn't anyone have the sense to cut that segment?

59 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:54 pm

Tio Charlie!

60 briang   ~  Aug 9, 2011 9:59 pm

somehow i still don't hate AJ....the one guy above has a point, he just unravels when the chips are a little stacked. he can't usually overcome it. that being said i'd like to see him start!!!!!!

paul o'neill's point was the best. he stopped going hard with that fastball. almost like he thinks that any contact will result in a hit. shit, he doesn't even wanna have it touch the catcher. he looked so good until he got into trouble......hmmmm.

61 briang   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:00 pm

anyon notice dontrelle willis had a good game?...dude hasn't thrown a strike in YEARS.....

62 briang   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:05 pm

how are the the yanks winning this game anyone?.....another nunez homer?......a pinch hit posada homer?........who would he hit for?...chavez once a lefty comes in?.....

63 briang   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:05 pm

who's hitting for chavez?

64 briang   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:06 pm

jones!, i knew it. only logical. is this preferable to jorge? sentiment tells me no, performance tells me yes.

65 briang   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:07 pm

jesus, i'm alone. you guys are boring...don't make suffer through RAB comments, please!!!!!!!!!

66 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:09 pm

[68] Still here! Just on hold to a huge pharmaceutical company playing "Edelweiss" from Sound of Music..sigh..

67 briang   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:11 pm

that'll do. gonna have to stick with that for awhile. jorge will be saved for extra innings in day games only.

68 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:14 pm

I thought Andruw might be a HOFer, but his numbers don't rate, His 414 HRs are nice, but a career 111 OPS+ is not so hot. Even during his better days with Atlanta, his OPS+ was only 113.

What happened to the guy? He shit the bed at 30. Was he injured? I thought of him as a real star.

69 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:19 pm

[71] But 400+ homers with all-time great D in CF..merits discussion.

70 Marek   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:23 pm

SRSLY?

71 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:23 pm

The every season Mo-slump rears its ugly head. : (

72 Marek   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:23 pm

What is it with ex-Yankees killing us? I'm looking at you, Matsui!

73 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:26 pm

[74] Gotta hope that's what it is.

I know it's second guessing, but at 3-1 I was kind of urging Mo to dare to FUCKING WALK HIM instead of throwing a cookie.

This game is not what I was looking for tonight.

It's a small sample size, but Abreu does seem as well-suited as a lefty is going to look against Mo. And he sure looks comfortable up there against him.

FUCK. &&^%$##@@@!!

I regret watching this game.

74 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:27 pm

[71] Fat?

75 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:28 pm

Oh, and fuck Mauer for not handling that ridiculously easy play last night. That was GARBAGE.

76 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:28 pm

Btw, Nunez? Quick bat.

77 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:28 pm

Hey, now Nuney! Good start.

78 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:32 pm

Brett, you swung at about 7 ball fours tonight.

79 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:36 pm

C'mon, Curtis. You've been a hero all season. One more notch won't hurt 'ya!

80 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:39 pm

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, dammmit. One more out to play with.

81 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:39 pm

I want pie!

82 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:40 pm

Lay off the off speed, Teix. Square up that heater and watch it fly.

83 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:42 pm

That's a foot fucking outside blue!

84 Just Fair   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:42 pm

Well, I am going to smash something.

85 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:43 pm

Nightmare. Fucking nightmare. You have got to be kidding me. And nice fucking call, ump. I've always been with Boggs on this one. It's the fucking strike zone. Learn it, or find a new profession.

Argh.

86 Mattpat11   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:43 pm

Hmm.

87 OldYanksFan   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:44 pm

Good Lord! Even the Halo's announcers wondered why Grandy would run with Teix up. What a fuck up!

88 Marek   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:44 pm

way to take the bat out of Tex's hands. Not that he was doing much with the bat.

89 Marek   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:44 pm

[86] +1

90 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:46 pm

wow...

91 Bruce Markusen   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:48 pm

This is not a smart baseball team. I love Granderson, but that's absolutely bush league getting caught on that ridiculous fake-to-third nonsense. And the other night, Nunez got caught out of position on the Ellsbury bunt and failed to cover third.

It's not just about playing hard, it's about playing smart, as former Devils coach Tommy McVie used to say.

92 Alex Belth   ~  Aug 9, 2011 10:56 pm

91) Very well put. Horrible loss.

93 Boatzilla   ~  Aug 9, 2011 11:02 pm

Gents, I had to leave before the end. What kind of fuckery went down in the bottom of the 9th?

94 jjmerlock   ~  Aug 9, 2011 11:07 pm

[93] Nearly every last manner of fuckery. Including an asinine strike call by the ump that did not help things along.

But what you missed was not the cure for what's been ailing a few of us for a few days now.
