The Yanks say goodbye to the west coast tonight.
Here’s how they’ll roll.
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jesus Montero DH
Andruw Jones LF
Russell Martin C
Eduardo Nunez 3B
Never mind the time difference:
Let’s Go Yank-ees!
[0] Yo, that poster is hysterical.
Let's Go Yankees!!
It was a sticker, found on a pole outside my house in the BX.
[2] It almost has your name on it...
Don't I know it.
Hey, just wondering but..is A-Rod still on the team?
[5] He's 'posed to play on Friday, come hell or high water.
We will need him for the playoffs, no doubt.
[7] I'm on the Jesus-train. A-Rod is old news!! :)
I'm still amused by more Kyle Bob Seger jokes. Let's hope he doesn 't hit any "Live Bullets"!
Ok, maybe that's enough Seger jokes..
Cmon Captain, go McBain on this Vargas villian!
This is amusing.
I figure at this rate Vargas should last about 1.2 innings.
[9] No, the Banter is "Still The Same", the jokes will roll on. But I'm ready to "Turn the Page" on these West Coast games. It's putting a crimp on my "Night Moves".
Hopefully the Yankees will be "Like A Rock" in the AL East after tonight with a 5 game lead.
Curtis' hit made a nice sound.
Wow, 23 pitches in a 1-2-3 inning.
[12] You are indeed a "Ramblin' Man" kenboyer.
Yanks are going to kick this guy's ass all the way to Katmandu!
There's one thing Nuñez does better than A-Rod.
Five pitches!!!
Damn.
Pitch count is the tie-breaker, in case they're scoreless after nine innings, right?
[17]I thought it was pissing for distance?
[18] Damn, I knew we should have held on to Farnsworth.
[18] Do you mean pissing "Against The Wind" for distance?
[19,20] Only "Lucifer" has a chance against Krazy Kyle.
[21] I don't know about that. The Centaur has "The Fire Down Below", and might best that Farney
[22] As long as they "Shakedown" afterwards..
Big K.
Big DP.
[23] Oy.
Wasn't that pick-up and throw to second beautiful by Cano on that DP. It can't be measured, but smoothness has to count in perception.
Big BB.
[26] Ok, we reached the "Nutbush City Limits" on the Seger songs then.
C'mon Russell Coltrane!!
Small K.
Are you fucking kidding me? With one out?
Horrible. Incompetence.
Fire the OC! Ah shit, wait
I daresay Mr Jones slowed down there
[30] I think I could beat Jones in a race, and he has a 20 year head start.
I'm sure the Pedro Feliciano surgery is Joe Torre's fault
Slick turn Robbie!
Big GIDP.
G'nite folks!
Seger must take sliding lessons from Posada.
[37] Hitting the sack early? Not even midnight over there.
What's with Nova all of a sudden?
This game kind of sucks.
I mean, the base running/base coaching mistake, then the stupid steal by the M's, then they score anyway on a ridiculous WP.
I say we scrap this one and play two tomorrow.
Hold up, the Yankees have one stinkin' hit against this joker?
New rule: if I get comment #42, that means Mariano closes.
Damn!
[43] Sorry about that. I want Jackie to pinch hit.
[45] I hear he's slowing down a little. I mean, probably not Andruw slow, but still.
[46] I just had an image of a baseball zombie movie.
[47] Are you listening to Kay and Leiter?
I just switched from the Seattle broadcast. They were just talking about Money Ball. What did I miss?
Nothing, really. They were talking about movies, you were talking about zombie movies, so I just wondered if you were listening to them.
Jon Weisman loves Moneyball. (The movie, I mean.) I think my tastes might be closer to his than to Al's.
Vargas!
I think we've gotten to the point whre it should be noted that the Yankees aren't hitting Jason Vargas
Yankees bats seem to have started their last day off a little early.
Every once in a while, when they show the dugout, I look around to see if Andy Pettitte is there.
Cadillac Jones. He cracks me up. Looks away when he catches it, fires it submarine style back to the infield, flipped a no look pass over his shoulder to Granderson last inning.
[49][50] I'm guessing the Moneyball movie is really bad..
I'll say it again; that Carp guy on the M's looks like Chris Elliott when he was young.
Two measly hits against Vargas?
The Yanks are hitting like Vargas Girls tonight.
[56] Hm. Well, I think my tastes might be closer to Jon Weisman's than to yours, actually.
Delicious!
Swish Swat!
That'll do
Swisher delivers! It looked like he didn't hit it hard.
KaBOOM!
[60] What, you aren't up for a double feature of "The Sorrow & The Pity" and "Six-String Samurai"? I like to mix&match.
[65] Well, actually, I would!
But I really like movies. I like them too much, so I'm a bad critic. Like a really voracious, starving fat guy would make a bad food critic.
Lets not throw that again
I love nova's efficiency I do.
[56] I've heard good things about Moneyball. I will see if it my schedule allows. Wanna be my "date"?
[69] the bb love board.
I'll buy the tix if you sport for the beer and popcorn. (*J*)
yo team!
heard some of the game on the radio driving home from work. turned on the tv and saw robbie strike out and swish's homerun. i'm starving, so i'm eating in the kitchen. i thought i'd get to watch on my computer via espn3, but my laptop isn't letting me. something weird going on w/ the adobe flash player and it's pissing me off...
[66] Well. I'm a hyper-critical movie-goer so it would be interesting for me to debate the merits of Caddyshack II with you some time.
[69] Will you buy me popcorn and a giant carbonated-flavor drink? Not sure I like that date invitation coming on comment 69 though..
Jamey Wright is still in baseball?
There's very little encouraging about that bullpen
Steal home now.
WFT DJ?!?
Seeya dudes, I'm off to the salt mines.
Eduardo Nunez is the worst defender I've ever seen at any position. Curt Blefary laughs at him.
DUSTED, Dustin! YOU GOT HAMMERED.
HIGH SOCKS!!!
i went inside to watch that. : )
Goddam.
I'm glad I stayed up, just for that.
Man, that is exhilarating.
[81] Good, so that shows you have some sense!
Brandon League is their closer, right?
I guess even Joe G. would bring in Mo in this situation.
ooh, damn close for curtis.
[83] i fixed the adobe thingie. so i can watch in the kitchen! : )
Big stuff Bama. Good for Nova...too bad no decision. Now let's get one, and Mo can tie the record.
dontchyaknow!
that's a nice piece of 2-strike hitting.
i like this walk.
be good for jesus to get his first game winning ribbie! : )
Oh, brilliant. Walk Swish, excellent.
remember when Game Winning RBI was a stat on the back of baseball cards?
[88] God will punish Wedge for this.
Speaking of which, did you see that Lavarnway played a bunch in Fenway today?
Those two fouls were in his wheelhouse. Jesus just couldn't turn on them. Too fast, I guess. Good pitches.
[91] is that our fellow tribesman?
ah, crap.
i barely had a look. does this idiot have a disgusting neck tattoo also?
[93] Yeah, him.
Of course, Jesus Montero was also named after a Jewish boy. Maybe he's Jewish, too.
Greetings all, back from dinner, just in time for the top of the 9th.
1-1 eh?
Time to roll the dice on Soriano ... c'mon, NO WHAMMYS!!!
Interesting. The tactically best move is to go to Mo here. But it's hard to complain since going with Soriano is probably the best route to 601. (No, actually, leaving D-Rob in would be -- but I don't expect that.)
last gig of my tour was in seattle. beautiful country. good beer, too!
[90] I remember! I was so happy cause Donnie Baseball had like 30 of them one season.
[96] You missed a nice Hammer exhibition. He inherited runners in the corners, but nailed the M's to the wall to bail out Nova.
Hmmm ... Montero is 0 for 4 with 3ks???
Bust!
[95] i used to play tom lehrer's "national brotherhood week" with a trio. when it got to that part - you know the part - since the drums stop, i'd stand up and point to myself and the bassist would turn around and point to me. singer/pianist did the same. it was pretty funny!
[96] hey buddy!
[100] Nice!
The 4! hits we've managed tonight has to have been a little frustrating ...
who's the 'other' guy on the espn broadcast? i'm assuming ex-player. is it chris singelton?
Hmm.
Fucking Nune5.
Why isn't Chavez in there for defense?
tough play, but man does he SUCK at defense. : /
[106] yeah! good call.
we want chavy!
Touched the glove, tough play but (Nun)E5.
the anti nunE5!
[109] It was a tough play, my complaint is more with JoeyJoeJoe.
Everybody in the stadium knows Nune5 is clownshoes at 3rd.
The Mattpat of Seattle is right now fuming about the Mariners' pinch stand-there.
Gritner!
[111] i think his screen name is:
Standpat11
anything other than a strikeout there woulda been disappointing.
Good work, Rafa.
Seems like somebody in the booth should know that Gold Glove voting was changed this year to 1 LF, 1 CF and 1 RF.
If Gritner does win the LF Gold Glove, it's a complete travesty, not that Gold Gloves AREN'T already a complete travesty, but Gardner has had such an incredible year in the field, it shouldn't even be a competition ...
Good Soriano. Good Gardner. Not so Good Nunez. NOW SCORE A RUN...PLEASE.
If the Yankees don't, we'll have to endure The Proctor.
[117] Err, *doesn't* win ...
how about pinch hitting chavy for nune5?
So, checking the box score ... Jones got thrown out at home?
What happened there?
Bad send?
Great throw?
[113] I was thinking GrungePat11.
[118] Even better, it's time for BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOney!
[118] It's late, I don't comprehend...
trayvon has that awesome coloring a la mike cameron.
there was another who looked like that. yankee outfielder for a minute. who was it? always hurt, had power... not glenallen hill. not matt lawton. damn, who am i thinking of?!
[122] JavaPat11
Holy
[120] Very bad send.
If it was Gritner it would have been a good send. Andruw was puffing as he chugged into third, it was pretty shocking when he kept going.
here's chavy...
Wait, Coffee Joe let Nune5 hit against a RHP in the 8th with the tying run on 2nd?
Or was it a LHP?
crap.
I've spent the better part of the last half hour trying to think of a player with less baseball instincts on the field. Even the famously flakey Bernie and Jorge saved most of their nonsense for the bases.
Blargh.
I have a feeling these extra frames favors these gas throwing Mariners' relieverx over our assorted non-SoRoMo pupu platter
[128] R, I'm pretty sure -- it was Jamey Wright, wasn't it?
I think Nuñez would make an excellent player for Scranton. Maybe (MAYBE) he could learn how to field. Then he'd be a useful Yankee -- Bronx kind, I mean.
Kay and Leiter agree that he's been a godsend. Maybe they meant your god, cult. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Baal sent him.
This could work. Remember, the Mariners hit like the Staten Island Yanks.
not good.
Uh oh.
i'm not a fan of this walk...
How does Boone Logan only have a 2.89 ERA this season?
You know your LOOGY sucks when he intentionally walks the lefty
Yeah, I can accept this IBB. Even I can accept it!
[137] He had a couple of good months, including one very very good month. (Everyone forgets this -- I remember it well!)
Ichiro is a lefty but he is the player on the team most likely to get a hit. The extra base runner means absolutely nothing (except a possible force at third or DP).
Hope Seager isn't going to make Loogan a not so Beautiful Loser..
good. one more, please!
One more.
Then we score, then Mo.
Keep watching, Dusty. Don't see anything you like?
whew
YES!!!
Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooone.
MUST SCORE RUN(S).
Who is this Tom Wilhelmsenmanfredjunsen?
The dregs of the Yankees bullpen vs the M's lineup seems like some unstoppable force vs immovable object of suck
that really is pretty frickin' impressive about jeter's 150+ hits. some company.
now, hit one out, curtis!
motherfucking cocksucking piece of dogshit.
damn!
[148] Or not. Either way. We still love baseball.
At the wall power tonight. THIS does not bode well.
At the wall power tonight. THIS does not bode well.
[131] Freshman year of HS, trying out for the Freshman baseball team, I was shagging throws at the plate while our Freshman Coach, Mr. Dietz was hitting flyballs to the outfielders.
Now, the way the field was set up down the LF line, starting just past 3rd base, a short ridge line of about 5-6 feet, interspaced with trees, rose about 5 feet past the foul line. Between the rise and the trees, playing balls hit down the line could be tricky for left fielders.
One of the guys trying out for the team was Knute Engstrom. Nice guy, not too bright. Nose tackle on the football team, not the most coordinated.
Coach Dietz hits a ball down the LF line that starts hooking foul. Knute chases. Ball keeps hooking, Knute keeps chasing.
Ball is hooking into the trees, Knute keeps chasing, eyes fixed only on the ball.
Knute runs full speed into the rise, never once taking his eyes off the ball, trips and falls flat on his face, not even managing to break his fall with his arms.
The ball fell about 10 feet away.
Coach Dietz stood there for a moment, shook his head softly in disgust and muttered under his breath, almost too quietly for me to hear, "I gotta cut that kid before he hurts himself."
Sometimes, when I watch Nune5 play, I think of Knute Engstrom ...
Nuney is a UINF who plays 2nd, 3rd and SS. He has had his issues, but his OPS is better then 5 other AL STARTING Shortstops (and this after a long slump).
The guy is a Melky. He lacks concentration and is very raw. But he has shown some tools. I suspect when he matures, he will be one of the best UINFs in MLB.
And Seattle has good pitching, but 4 hits (one by Nunez) in 11 innings sucks. We have a 99.9% chance of making the PS, and we're still up at 1 AM.
{153} I must love baseball. Have to be up and functioning fully in less than 6 hours.
[156] Knute Nunez?
[157] why, that's...quite sensible!
and melky is enjoying a career year this season w/ the royales. he and frenchy - and alex gordon - are all doing well there, actually.
[150] My father was in the Secret Service, Mr. Wilhelmsenmanfredjunsen, and I know perfectly well that you don't keep the general public informed when you are "debriefing KGB defectors in a safe house"!
junior - prettiest swing ever of all time. ever.
[161] Knutez?
[156] Knute Engstrom. I may have to change my tag to that.
And Boston loses tonight, as Bard walks the first 2 batters he faces, and gives up 3 in the 8th. TB loses their 2nd game to Baltimore, and their chances go from 11+% to 4.6% in 2 days.
I'm OK with less tension going down the stretch.
our boyz still have to fly to toronto tonite...
[162] Well done, Knute! Hmm..Yankee fan..lives out in LA..knows his obscure movie quotes...are you actually Debbie Reynolds?
Doesn't it seem like Wily Mo should play in Japan, seems like he be one of those great gaijin sluggers that couldn't quite make it here, but would be legendary over there ...
Meanwhile, I should have added Wade to the list of non-sucky pitchers. He isn't going to overpower hitters, but he knows what he's doing out there.
I feel about 100x more comfortable with him on the mound than I do with Ayala ...
we really need to win it here...
[169] i agree with all that. i dig wade. and nova.
ouchie! please don't be hurt.
That hurt like hell
Wow ... I've read about this guy pitching for the Mariners.
GREAT story.
-1 Hollywood story points for you, Mr. Balabar.
Bad rookie, bad.
it will be difficult for him to play the bass drum right now.
[169] You'd need to hollow out two Japanese apartments for Wily Mo to fit comfortably in them.
Cult, you ever see "Fierce Creatures"? As bad as everyone says?
Oh no..what happened to Robbie???
Remember when we knocked Felix around and thought we were out of our funk?
Now we can't hit a school teacher
i can't envision it, but robbie should drink some whiskey on the plane!
[177]fastball right on the side of his right foot.
bollocks.
oh no.
that sucks.
That was not satisfying. This was a win that should have been.
Terrible.
I can accept this. No Proctor, no Laffey, it happens
[177] Only saw it once, when I came out. I remember being pretty disappointed in it.
But, frankly, I can't remember much of anything about it and can't really say if it was bad, or if I just had sky-high expectations that it didn't fulfill.
[186] Yeah, this one was on the bats.
Sleep well. There are bigger issues in this world.
[169] We promised, but the moment we got inside we lost control. The tension had been too great. Debbie Reynolds was yukking across the stage in a silver Afro wig...to the tune of "Sargent Pepper" from the golden trumpet of Harry James.
...
This is the main advantage of ether: it makes you behave like the village drunkard in some early Irish novel...total loss of all basic motor skills: Blurred vision, no balance, numb tongue-severance of all connection between the body and the brain. Which is interesting, because the brain continues to function more or less normally...you can actually watch yourself behaving in the terrible way, but you can't control it.
What's happening here? What's going on? Then you hear yourself mumbling: "Dogs fucked the Pope, no fault of mine. Watch out!...Why money? My name is Brinks; I was born...Born? Get sheep over side...women and children to armored car...orders from Captain Zeep."
[176] Dude, those guys live in Homemats--apartments that are bigger than most houses in Levittown.
[186] Always have loved "Wanda" so much. Skipped watching their renuion as even they disowned it for the most part.
Really annoying to lose extra-innings to Seattle..I want more separation from Boston!
[188] Oh, you bringing that Hunter S. shit in here? I'll take you with this:
"Keep on riding me and they're gonna be picking iron out of your liver.
"The cheaper the crook, the gaudier the talk."
Well, I thought you were playing, "spot the obscure reference" and when I think of Debbie Reynolds, I think of Fear and Loathing!
=)
Robinson Cano went for x-rays after being hit in the foot in the 12th inning. The tests showed no break, but Cano was still hobbling around the clubhouse with the foot heavily wrapped.
Lovely.
[191] I love Jamie Lee. And Cleese's scene in the holiday house is absolutely hilarious.
[194] Damn.
[195] Jamie Lee was super. Cleese and Kevin Kline perfect in that film. May have to YouTube view that over chores tonight!
