Also in the news:

Two baseball sources have confirmed that Theo Epstein is on the cusp of leaving his job as general manager of the Red Sox to accept a position with the Chicago Cubs that is believed to include powers greater than he has in Boston, with an announcement expected to be made “within the next 24 to 48 hours.”

The hangup in the negotiations has been twofold. One of them is that Red Sox ownership was still hoping to have Epstein remain with the team. The other is compensation: If Epstein is to leave Boston, said one source with knowledge of the negotiations, the Red Sox are going to want “something real.”

Whether that involves a player, money or a combination of the two remains unclear.

“But this is going to be resolved very soon,” said a second baseball source.

Theo and Tito both out? Post season looking better already.

3 cult of basebaal   ~  Oct 11, 2011 7:29 pm

I just think it's a fantastic story and great for baseball.

If Theo can (re)build the Cubs and produce a WS winner there, he's arguably the greatest GM in history, regardless of what else he ever managed to accomplish.

4 RIYank   ~  Oct 11, 2011 7:43 pm

[3] He gets my vote, too. And [2] agree on that, too.

5 rbj   ~  Oct 11, 2011 7:57 pm

Theo would get in the HoF for that. May get it just for the Sox.

6 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 11, 2011 8:20 pm

Not a promising start for Les Tigres.

7 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 8:33 pm

Home cooking doesn't seem to be helping the Tiggers.

8 rbj   ~  Oct 11, 2011 8:39 pm

There goes the perfecto.

9 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 8:44 pm

And there goes the no-hitter.

10 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 11, 2011 8:48 pm

[3] Or, Theo can bring the free-agent signing magic that led to Edgar Renteria, Julio Lugo, JD Drew, John Smoltz and John Lackey. (Pass on Crawford, he will liklely bounce back.) But you are right, win the WS there he's in the HOF for sure.

11 OldYanksFan   ~  Oct 11, 2011 8:50 pm

Theo almost left before, right? I'll guess this season was just the straw that broke the camel's back? Rat's abandoning the sinking ship?

Theo made some good moves, but many didn't work out.

Their SS situation has been unstable since Nomar.
Dice-K has turned into a historically bad deal (in terms of WAR/$$)
Nancy Drew didn't help the team much (.264 .370 .455 .825, 13 bWAR/5 years)
$160m to Crawford was a TERRIBLE signing.
The story on John Wackey is still to be told, but not good so far.

12 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 11, 2011 8:50 pm

Colby Lewis. C'mon, give me a fucking break.

13 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 8:52 pm

[10] Yeah, he kinda sucks with free agent signings. Scouting, drafting, trading, fine, but FA signings...not so much.

14 rbj   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:05 pm

Weak hack Miggy

15 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:11 pm

Beltre doesn't wear any padding on his feet or legs.

16 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:19 pm

Tie game!

17 rbj   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:20 pm

Uh-oh!

18 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:25 pm

[15] or his...well...you know...

i'm don't care for either team, but i'm not rooting for the tigers...

the beard w/ no mustache look is terrible. michael young looks awful like that...

19 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:33 pm

[18] I'm still holding a grudge from last year.

Plus, I want more baseball. Sweeps are boring. Unless your team is on the right end of the broom. ;-)

20 NoamSane   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:34 pm

[3] [4] 2nd greatest after B-Rickey, right?

21 Alex Belth   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:38 pm

No Magglio, no Delmon, and now, maybe they lose Victor? That is too much to overcome.

22 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:39 pm

[19] i hear ya. i'm still holding a grudge from last week!

23 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:42 pm

Battle of attrition.

24 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:44 pm

crap. i was hoping that fat fucking gun waving, wife beating, idiot drunk would strike out...

25 Just Fair   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:47 pm

After watching Cabrera bang one down the line I just want to say, I don't enjoy the thought of trading Jesus for pitching. Dude is going to be good. He's already good.

26 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:47 pm

V-Mart gets on without a swing.

27 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:49 pm

[25] I don't want to trade him either.

Especially if he can stick at catcher.

28 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:50 pm

[24] Was it Crabrera that did that? I always liked him but didn't know he beat his wife..

29 jfdrums   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:52 pm

I don't understand that inning at all. Texas obviously though Martinez was hurt, or else they never in a million years would have pitched to him with first base open. However, if they thought that, why would they pitch to Cabrera? And why were they throwing curves to a guy they think is hurt? Just throw fastballs and see what he's got, if he can even swing. Very confusing.

30 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:52 pm

[28] he was also a dick when he beat us in '03. he was like 21 years old at the time...

[25] i don't wanna trade jesus.

31 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:54 pm

[28] Yeah, he's had some problems with alcohol the past couple of years. Was arrested after an "altercation" with his wife. Showed up at the ballpark with scratches on his face which he blamed on the dog.

There was also an incident where he threatened to shoot a bunch of people at a restaurant. And the DWI during spring training (after he claimed he'd been to rehab and overcome his alcohol problem).

32 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 9:54 pm

[29] drummer?

yeah, they shoulda pumped high fastballs to v-mart. cabrera had one of those lucky pokes. his off us went for a 2-run homer...

33 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:00 pm

are you fhucking khidding?

34 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:01 pm

[31] in other words, he's a stand up guy.

35 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:01 pm

Things looking up for the Tiggers.

36 rbj   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:05 pm

[20] Branch is in a class by himself . As, more importantly is Jackie. Can't imagine what he went through. Both transcended sports. And with that I'm out for the night.

37 NoamSane   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:09 pm

[36] In addition to signing Jackie, Rickey was also big in the development of the system of farm teams.

38 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:09 pm

[31.35] Booze can make people do some effed up shit, unfortunately. Not me though, I just "rest briefly" with my head on the table..

[35] They need more than solo taters!

39 jfdrums   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:09 pm

[32] yup.
i check this site and lohud about 50 times a day but never comment. i sometimes read the comments, especially game threads, just to see if my sports rage is way off base. maybe i'll start commenting more, i'm lonely tonight and had no one to vent my confusion to.

40 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:11 pm

go brewers!

: )

41 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:12 pm

[39] do you play professionally?

42 randym77   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:13 pm

Gawd, listening to these Fox guys trying to pronounce "Yomiuri" is brutal.

43 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:19 pm

[42] Tee-hee. Yep, especially considering that Japanese is so much easier to pronounce than people think.

[39] Welcome! You're in the right spot for baseball venting and late-night music geek chat.

44 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:21 pm

i'm listening to boog and orel on the "mexican, whoa-oh ray-de-o"

45 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:30 pm

holy crap. that moonshot was fucking majestic!

[i had to run into the den to watch that. the radio feed is earlier, so i heard the call first...]

i wish there was some karmic realignment for that fucking bastid, that helped cause the tigers' demise in the lds. : /

46 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:40 pm

catchers are slow.

47 jfdrums   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:43 pm

[41] yup, again.
well, i feel slightly better now that Fister shut another team down. he seems to be in a groove.

48 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 10:46 pm

[47] nice! i'm a professional percussionist. i make a living playing, teaching, composing & recording drums & classical percussion.

49 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 11:05 pm

i hope the rangers greet valverde with 3 straight solo homers to tie the game!

50 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 11:07 pm

leadoff double for hamilton.

51 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 11:09 pm

well, that was unproductive.

and, good lord, timmay is insufferable...

52 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Oct 11, 2011 11:11 pm

[51] Timmah & Joe Buck make me appreciate having the Japanese-language feed here.

53 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 11:12 pm

damn. that's the 2nd nice play cabrera has made in the field, this series.

54 thelarmis   ~  Oct 11, 2011 11:13 pm

[52] yeah, i was better off listening on the radio before. but i'm doing laundry in there now, so i couldn't hear the radio.
