You can still find a good egg cream in New York. It was a drink from my father’s childhood and not one that I had with any regularity as a kid. Still, it’s a delicious treat. My cousin, who knows from these things, says there is only one chocolate syrup to use–it’s not just that it is the best, it is the only one to consider: Fox’s u-bet.
Man, I’m thirsty all of a sudden.

When I was a teenager, egg creams figured into my adolescent prick routine: Whenever I was down south, or out west, etc. on vacation, I'd go into an ice cream shop and ask for one. Mostly because I really wanted one, but also because I just knew the guy would ask me how many eggs went into it, and how much cream.
So now karma has me living down here, where I've had to absorb that BBQ is not ribs, iced tea is more sugar than tea, college hoops is allegedly more important than MLB, and that's not what they mean when they say "bless your heart."
My egg cream apostasy: I prefer vanilla to chocolate.
I love the little scene in The West Wing when President Bartlet has an egg cream for the first time.
