HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JETES!!!

let's keep that average above .300 and put another W up on the board!

GO YANKS!!!

2 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 4:40 pm

Hm, I've had about as much as I want of Chris Stewart and Dewayne Wise.

Oh well.

Yeah, happy birthday, Cap. I predict some birthday hits.

3 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 26, 2012 4:59 pm

[2] Didn't Wise make that incredible catch to preserve Mark Buehrle's perfect game in 2009? Maybe he can do the same for Hughes...

Wise had a great game yesterday and deserves another start.

4 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 5:31 pm

Happy birthday Derek.

5 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 5:53 pm

[3] Yeah. He might. And he did have a great game yesterday.

But he isn't a good player, and he doesn't deserve another start.

6 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:10 pm

And no gopher balls tonight Phil.

7 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:13 pm

[6] I think he heard you and is determined to throw nothing in the strike zone.

8 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:15 pm

Actually, his fastball looks good.
If he has something else working, he could have a nice game going.

9 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:22 pm

Jays strike first, on a throwing error by Young Will Middlebrooks.

YOOOOOOOOOOOOK!

10 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:31 pm

Happy Birthday Jeter! We're the same age and are similar in so many ways! Except for the 3000+ hits and $189 million contract. And the supermodel girlfriends. And universal respect from his peers. But Mrs. Jazz doesn't think he's all that, so I got that going for me.

Go Go Hughes! Keep the gopher balls to solo shots please.

11 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:42 pm

I'll take that.

12 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:43 pm

[2] "I've had about as much as I want of Chris Stewart and Dewayne Wise." What a moron that guy is.

13 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:43 pm

Quit whining Indians announcers.

14 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:47 pm

Curtis!

15 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:47 pm

This is better than that other thing we used to do with the bases loaded.

16 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:49 pm

[12] Hey, have some sympathy. Poor guy has to live in New England, can't be easy on him.

17 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:50 pm

[15] You mean like that?

18 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:56 pm

[16] 誰もが日本に住んでしたいと考えています。

[17] That's it! I recognized it immediately.

19 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:57 pm

Really needed that DP, nice.

20 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 6:59 pm

Way to make it look easy, Swish!

21 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:00 pm

Adventures in the Outfield with Nick Swisher.

22 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:06 pm

Aaron Laffey is stifling the Red Sox.

23 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:06 pm

(18) Nice! Though I suspect some Babelfish/Googletranslate grammar there :)

Do the Yanks resign Swisher?

24 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:08 pm

[23] I would, but 2-3 years.

25 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:12 pm

[23] Guilty.

HUUUUUUUUGHES!

26 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:13 pm

[5] No stuffies and coffee milk for you tonight.

I missed the scoring, and can't watch until 9 (again the wife has to watch the Olympic swimming trials...every night 8-9 this week). Watching on MLB Gameday. Seems like fun.

27 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:18 pm

[26] Hah! Now everyone else reading is going, "coffee milk?"

28 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:18 pm

Hey RIyank, hook me up with the knowledge. Was reading on Fangraphs that Joe Mauer was 'back' and the contract not an albatross. I see a catcher who walks a lot with 3 home runs..

29 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:25 pm

I love this edition of Hughes. So efficient.

30 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:27 pm

[28] Oh, right. But 16 doubles. And I mean, that's Mauer -- except for his MVP* season he's right about where he is in good years.

A catcher with a .400 OBP! That's very valuable.

31 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:29 pm

Let's go, Rob, extend the lead, I think Bat Masterson is tired.

32 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:33 pm

[31] "They call him Bat, Bat Masterson" I think you're revealing a generation border there.

33 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:34 pm

nice hit Nick.

34 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:38 pm

[30] Yeah but..$184 million for a catcher that walks a lot? Jason Kendall had a .400 OBP once too...that contract seems crazy.

[32] Not getting that one at all.
Speaking of Bat's though, I found out yesterday that Liberace was once on the 60s Batman TV series. Liberace!

35 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:47 pm

[34] Yeah, Jason Kendall had a really good year. But Joe Mauer has had a really good career. Sure, they may be overpaying him, I agree with that.

HUUUUUUUUGHES!

36 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:50 pm

[32] There was a TV western about the real life western figure Bat Masterson that aired in the late 50's early 60's. That line was from the theme music. Bat Masterson actually died I think in the 1920's and finished his career as a newspaper columnist in NY.

And Liberace was the criminal Fingers on Batman. It was a popular culture high point of the show. From tots to Grandma, everyone liked Liberace.

37 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:51 pm

[34] Is Justin Masterson pitching tonight? That would explain it... (Bat Masterson was a colleague, contemporary and pal of Wyatt Earp.) Also a TV show from a forgotten era if I recall...

38 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:53 pm

[36] I remember that episode from reruns. Liberace and Adam West's Batman? C'mon, who wouldn't have thought of that...

39 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:53 pm

That shot of Rob and Dewayne Wise is just heart-melting.
How can anybody not like the Yankees? It seems impossible.

40 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:56 pm

[36][37] Nice, thanks.

[38] I really got to check out those episodes.
I know it was a more "innocent" era but..how is possible that millions of ladies swooned over Liberace?

[39] Following online now, what were they up to?

41 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 7:58 pm

Bullpen action, please.

42 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:01 pm

[40] In the dugout, Rob chewing his sunflower seeds with his arm around Dewayne, talking seriously. Dewayne nodding and listening intently.

43 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:02 pm

Jeterian!

44 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:03 pm

Holy smokes.

I bow down before Dewayne Wise.

45 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:03 pm

[40] I don't think there's a safe-mode answer to that first question.

46 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:03 pm

Oh, he didn't catch it. That's hysterical.

47 Chyll Will   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:06 pm

Meanwhile, Bronson Arroyo was or is throwing a no-hitter through seven in Cincy... a no hitter...

48 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:06 pm

Awesome, Papi doubles off the Monster but My Little Pony can't trot around the bases fast enough and gets thrown out at home. God that was cool. (I'm flipping back and forth, not abandoning the Yankees!)

49 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:07 pm

[40] The closet was a very dark place, and unknown to most. They certainly swooned over Rock Hudson, and laughed at Danny Kay, and the youngsters (as Ed Sullivan called them) rocked out to Little Richard with no prejudice.

50 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:07 pm

I didn't see that. But more calls for replay.

51 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:08 pm

Much better than a weak grounder to short stop.

52 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:09 pm

Damn.

53 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:09 pm

[51] Well, sure, because nobody was on base.
Back to his selfish ways.

54 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:10 pm

[49] As a kid, I watched Paul Lynde on Match Game. Had no idea. . .

55 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:11 pm

[45][49] Sure but Rock Hudson was "manly" and Danny Kaye not overtly feminine. (Little Richard..well...) But my god, looking at some of those Liberace clips..the feathers! The jewelry! It's like a Tokyo hostess bar on acid.

[42] Interesting as Robbie is young than Wise, isn't he?

56 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:11 pm

[53] Heh.

57 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:12 pm

[54] No, Hollywood Squares. Right?

58 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:13 pm

[55] but robbie is Wise beyond his years!

[hi everyone.]

59 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:13 pm

[55] Indeed, but Wise is pretty clearly in awe. Well, who wouldn't be?

60 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:13 pm

[58] Oh, what an entrance!

61 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:15 pm

"brandon" arroyo's no-no is no longer. shutout's gone, too. in fact, so is the lead and the man (with the straight leg kick) himself.

62 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:15 pm

[60] that's how i roll.

63 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:16 pm

phil thru 8!!!

64 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:17 pm

Clap clap clap! What an excellent game for Phil.

More than a few Banterers were writing him off in mid-May, as I recall. Not naming any be-panted primate names, of course.

65 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:19 pm

[55] The schtick was still new...it was showbiz. When I see old clips of Liberace I wonder what inebriate he seems to be glowing on.

There are funny clips of Louis Armstrong and Liberace together. They seem to be having a ball together.

66 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:20 pm

[54][57] I was the same about Charles Nelson Reily.

67 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:20 pm

[57] Actually both. And then there's Charles Nelson Reilly. . .

68 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:20 pm

[55] "I wish my brother George was here."

69 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:20 pm

I missed it, why was Hannahan ejected?

70 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:21 pm

[23] michael bourn's a free agent, though he won't be free...

71 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:21 pm

[65] Armstong smokes pot every day of his adult life until he died. Helps to explain the huge smile.

72 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:22 pm

Phil for the ninth?

73 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:23 pm

[70] Well, he definitely won't be as free as the wind blows.

74 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:24 pm

111 pitches. doubt it.

has the chief pitched 2 days in a row?

75 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:29 pm

2 for 5 on his birthday.

76 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:29 pm

[73] Another '60s reference? You must be feeling nostalgic today.

Jete's keeps the average above .300 on his birthday!

77 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:30 pm

Saltalamacchia ties it up with a solo homer.

78 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:31 pm

[76] Yeah! Only that one I actually do remember. It might have been the first movie I ever saw, actually.

79 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:31 pm

[77] fuck.

80 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:33 pm

c-wade for the 9th

81 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:34 pm

[78] How about The Legend of Billy Jack?

82 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:36 pm

[76] Hey you kid, get off my damn lawn. I remember listening to the radio when the Beatles broke up.

83 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:38 pm

wilson betemit has 10 homers.

84 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:39 pm

fuck. i wanted the shutout...

85 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:41 pm

Toronto bullpen loads the bases with two out after the homer. Big moment for Little Pony...

86 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:42 pm

Jebus!

87 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:42 pm

midget fucker gives the shit sox a 2-run lead.

i knew that was gonna happen in the late innings at the fens...

88 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:43 pm

Pedroia scoots one up the middle, two runs score and the runner from first is thrown out at third. But the Sox are looking good, 3-1 after 7, in the Battle for the Basement.

89 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:43 pm

holy motherfuck.

get this joker outta there.

and to think i wanted the shutout. i'll settle for the fucking win...

90 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:43 pm

Uh oh, maybe I was watching the wrong game, huh?

Save situation.

Time for another prayer meeting, Thelarmis.

91 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:44 pm

I really do not like the no Mo policy.

92 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:44 pm

[82] Paul is the walrus.

93 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:45 pm

[91] Me neither. No Mo, no mo, but Ro So can Go!

94 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:45 pm

Honestly, this calls for D-Rob more than Soriano. But I guess it doesn't matter.

95 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:46 pm

Untuck that shirt.

96 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:46 pm

[90] i'm available via skype.

97 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:47 pm

98 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:47 pm

untucked.

99 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:49 pm

I wonder what old George would have thought, and said, and might have done about the untuck ritual?

100 rbj   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:49 pm

good night all.

[98] I like it. "Let's untuck this team." "Let's untuck this series." "You are getting untucked, bro.

[Why is the software telling me "untucked" is mispelled?

102 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:51 pm

Good game, folks, although C-Wade tried his best to live up to Alex's noir theme.

Let's keep it rolling tomorrow. Oh, and the Rays are losing to KC...

103 RIYank   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:52 pm

[101] It was anticipating your misspelling 'misspelled', I think.

104 thelarmis   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:52 pm

[101] that's okay, it thinks "couth" is not a word.

105 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:52 pm

[99] Depends on how many saves he blows.

106 Boatzilla   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:54 pm

[103] Ouch. So why didn't it tell me that was misspelled? Hmmm...

107 kenboyer made me cry   ~  Jun 26, 2012 8:58 pm

Untucked is a funny word. Say it 5 times and it kinda changes into something from an American Indian dialect.
