Awesome pic!

2 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 6:39 pm

Am watching the Futures game. US is crushing the World 16-5 in the 7th.

3 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 8, 2012 6:58 pm

Vincente Padilla with the strong comeback to Teix. Sexist comments AND accusations of prejudice against Latin players! Wow..this one getting really ugly. Considering Teix's family are of Portuguese descent and come from Guyana..hard to believe he would have a problem with Latin players.

Maybe the Yanks should trade for Shelly Duncan and Krazy Kyle again and have them speak with Padilla..

4 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:09 pm

Another lead off hit.

5 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:12 pm

Nice start

6 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:13 pm

Now, Nova understands that he has to give back any runs we score, right?

7 Simone   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:13 pm

[3] There is a colonial legacy of extreme of prejudice against people with darker skin color in Latin America and the Caribbean so it is not inconceivable that Padilla is right about Teixeira. However, Padilla is impossible to take seriously with his sexist comments. The Red Sox need to tell him to shut the hell up and play.

8 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:19 pm

[3] [7] I'm really looking forward to seeing how RSN responds. It's such a dickish move by Padilla that even the loyal fanbase will have a hard time sticking by him, I predict.

9 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:20 pm

time to go boom Nick.

10 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:21 pm

Ha!

11 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:23 pm

[7] Yes, reading back my comment and it was kind of silly. My mom is from Trinidad&Tobago and had a lot to say about the racial/ethnic relations in the islands and Guyana (some cousins there too.)

That was one of the worst throws to 1B I've ever seen..looked like Little League.

12 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:25 pm

trend continues 5 runs in game 1, 4 in game 2, 3 in game 3, 2 in game 4.

13 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:29 pm

Pedro Ciriaco? Really?

14 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:30 pm

[12] Hey yeah.
Also a trend: a guy who can't hit at all keeps getting on base. Very irritating.

15 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:35 pm

Ortiz..6.400OPS against the Yankees this season?

16 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:40 pm

Derek?

17 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:40 pm

Oh wow. Derek Castillo.

18 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:41 pm

Ah, Ivan does know how it works.

19 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:41 pm

[15] Yes. Bill James is authorized to give Ortiz bonus multipliers.

20 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:44 pm

[18] Derek certainly does.

21 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:46 pm

[20] Joint effort.

22 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:47 pm

I thought Francona was supposed to be a very good announcer? Sounds like the usual "old baseball man" stuff so far. Orel is not bad.

23 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:48 pm

[22] Huh, my reaction is opposite. But I've turned off the sound.

24 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:50 pm

Damn.
I mean, I'm happy because we're the opponents, but I have to admit that I actually do feel bad about Lester. I hope he plays well the rest of the season. Only Red Sock I'd say that about.

25 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:52 pm

Hm, apparently the ump feels bad about it too.

26 Simone   ~  Jul 8, 2012 7:53 pm

[11] Without giving too much personal info, I'll just say that our family backgrounds are very similar. :)

27 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:01 pm

[26] If you're hip to doubles, Red Solo and limin' then very similar indeed!
[23] I do that with the FOX broadcasts most of the time.

28 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:03 pm

Ah yes, Carl Crawford.

29 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:05 pm

[28] Carl Crawford what? I missed it.

30 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:07 pm

[22] I like Francona, especially because he always praises the Yankees (and he knows from experience). Orel isn't bad, IMHO.

31 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:09 pm

[29] Announcers were just talking about him and injuries. At least Burnett helped us win a World Series.

32 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:11 pm

[30] Yeah, and the way he left Boston gave him a warm glow, too. Trying to keep his dignity but obviously wanting to lash out and a few people. He'll write a good book someday.

33 randym77   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:12 pm

[31] AJ has been playing pretty well this year. The Pirates are in first place in the Central. Maybe the ol' Bucs are finally turning it around.

34 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:12 pm

[31] Oh, right.
Yes, and when he returns the production from LF will go down (because Nava has contributed a lot). And worse next year, and worse the next...

35 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:13 pm

[8] Don't know about that, RI. Some of the comments I saw from the NESN page were just downright idiotic.

36 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:16 pm

This is out of the blue, but I was just wondering why baseball managers have numbers on their uniforms. It's odd enough that they wear uniforms. For a player-manager, of course, it makes sense. But for guys not on the roster....very strange

37 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:16 pm

[35] Good lord. You read the NESN page? You have to get lasik surgery after you read that page. Slicing off the exposed part of your eye is the only treatment.

38 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:18 pm

Pedro Ciriaco, WTF????

I guess it's just one of those things.

39 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:18 pm

That was NOT a hit.

40 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:21 pm

Sigh.

41 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:21 pm

i really really hate Fat Liar.

42 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:21 pm

[39] That was though

43 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:21 pm

Any particular reason we *wanted* that pitch down and in?

44 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:22 pm

[41] He's on a one-year contract. We could sign him next year.

45 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:22 pm

[36] Good question. There is an answer of course on Wiki...

"In his comedy routine "Baseball & Football," George Carlin observes that in baseball, as compared to football, the manager is required to wear the same uniform the players do. However, this was actually not true in the early years of the game. Player-managers were common, but non-playing managers whose realm was strictly the dugout often wore business suits, a common occurrence at the time. Retired players who became managers were more likely to continue to wear a baseball uniform (John McGraw, for example), especially if they were also active on the coaching lines; managers often doubled as third-base coach.

By the late 1940s, nearly all managers were wearing baseball uniforms. Connie Mack was the last major league manager to wear a suit in the dugout until his retirement in the early 1950s; however, in contrast to the uniform-wearing managers, Mack rarely if ever stepped onto the field during a game; instead he sent uniformed coaches onto the field when a managerial presence outside the dugout was required."

46 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:22 pm

Dang that sucks.

Wish I could watch the whole thing, but I gotta go to Toastmasters.

Enjoy.

47 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:22 pm

good call on the fall ball/non-hbp. very bad play by jeter.

then bullshit wall ball by the Big Babi...

48 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:23 pm

[34] Hee hee. And you have to play him because of the contract.

49 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:23 pm

"We’ve reached the end of Side A"

i love that. really clever, alex!

50 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:24 pm

[45] Interesting. I'm not sure I dig seeing Charlie Manuel in his uniform..would a suit be much better though?

Ortiz just kills us...sigh..

51 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:24 pm

jesus christ.

really???

52 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:24 pm

Oh, fuck. Really? Nick Punto, really?

53 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:25 pm

[37] No, I was just looking for a reference to the issue and of course I was curious about the RSN response. Of course it drained any import about what Padilla said, and naturally the comments were ignorant, but when you look for the devil, you go to the source. My eyes will not unsee what was seen, but I'll be all right.

54 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:25 pm

I hate this game.

55 randym77   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:25 pm

Not a great night for the captain.

56 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:26 pm

[50] But if we could keep the little runts off base by getting outs when they can't hit the ball out of the infield, Ortiz' actual hits wouldn't cause damage!

57 Boatzilla   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:26 pm

[45] Thanks a lot! But it still doesn't explain the number issue. Bat boy's don't have numbers.

L8er.

58 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:26 pm

[44] best thing about that, would be him getting rid of that disgusting facial hair.

i would still hate him and his fat complaining ways. esp the violent swing and spit/hand-clap bullshit. also, he'll prolly get hurt and suck...

59 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:27 pm

[55] In the field. But, 2-for-2. (Also yesterday, ugh.)

60 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:27 pm

i shoulda stayed at my studio. was having a pretty good practice, too...

61 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:28 pm

Okay, here we go Ivan. Big batter coming up. This is your moment.

62 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:29 pm

I'm getting tired of the unbalanced schedule, with all these Boston games. Maybe switch it up every few years.

63 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:30 pm

Clap
Clap
Clap-clap-clap!

64 randym77   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:31 pm

Hah! Nice work, Nova.

65 OldYanksFan   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:31 pm

Jeez - Nova at 72 Pitches. Lester 62.

66 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:31 pm

Ivan actually does get better under pressure. I have to admit I thought that was bullshit, but it's impossible to deny at this point.

67 randym77   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:32 pm

[62] It sounds like the schedule might be more balanced next year. Fewer "natural rival" games, more interleague.

68 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:40 pm

Lester finding the groove, or emptying the tank?

69 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:43 pm

[67] Cool. 18 Red Sox games and 6 Mutts games is tiring these days. With 2 15 team leagues you have to have interleague every day . . . Unless . . . You have 2 16 team leagues. 4 four divisions per league?

70 Chyll Will   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:43 pm

[57] Later! For anyone else who's interested:

"The original baseball numbers were based on the lineup. The starting players would be numbered 1-8, based on their spot in the order. The backup catcher would be number 9, and the pitchers would wear 10-14 (but not 13, as that is superstitious).[7] Notable examples of this system are teammates Babe Ruth (he was number 3 and batted third for the Yankees) and Lou Gehrig (number 4, batted fourth)."

Numbers on baseball uniforms only became prominent starting in 1929; starting with a game between the Yanks and Indians. Football and hockey had already adopted a number system and baseball played on that. My guess about bat boys is that since they were not players, it was easy to distinguish them from actual players after the number system came into play. That said, Eddie Gadael was probably the only MLB player whose number was or included a fraction (1/8)...

71 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:47 pm

Nova v Nava... Ivan!

It would be good to get six innings out of Ivan. D-Rob and Soriano can go, and Joe can piece together an inning by using his favorite system.

72 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:50 pm

i fucking hate fenway. i really do. never been a fan of it. wish it wasn't so beloved...

73 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:54 pm

Hey!
Look at that!

74 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:54 pm

stand up triple!!!

and...OUCH!

now, plate a-rod!

75 Mattpat11   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:54 pm

Now that's what we want to see from A-Rod

76 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:54 pm

Hey, a triple for A-Rod in Fenway!

77 randym77   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:55 pm

Yikes, that looks really awful. He coulda broken his neck.

78 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:56 pm

[77] yeah, i'm surprised he's still in there.

79 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:56 pm

That was a big steep WinExp jump, that triple. Something like .65 to .82.

80 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:56 pm

Umm, I'd take him out just to check on him.

81 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 8:58 pm

Dang!
Rob is the only batter who's baffled by Lester tonight.

82 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:01 pm

andruw!!!

83 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:02 pm

Save the bones!

84 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:02 pm

scott achison looks old enough to be jamie moyer's dad.

85 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:03 pm

[84] He really does. When he came into the game yesterday (or day before?) for a moment I was thinking, "Wakefield???"

86 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:06 pm

[85] yeah, and dude is younger than me!

87 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:11 pm

88 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:13 pm

90 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:14 pm

Nice. Papi hits into a double play.

91 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:15 pm

[89] I think most people are practicing.

92 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:16 pm

What the hell is this, pipsqueak day at Fenway??? Punto and Ciriaco get to go to first base free every PA?

93 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:16 pm

[91] i knew it. i shoulda stayed at my studio. i guess i could always go back...

94 Mr OK Jazz Tokyo   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:17 pm

[91] I'm practicing getting the rainy season sludge off my balcony.
This game is looooooong....

95 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:18 pm

bossa nova, baby!

96 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:19 pm

Nice.
So, does he have enough juice to start the sixth? I'd say yes. Hope so.

97 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:22 pm

yes, i think Boss Bossa start the 6th.

98 rbj   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:23 pm

[96] next 4 days off, whoever hasn't pitched much lately comes in, others are out (unless it's a save situation)

good night all.

99 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:24 pm

nice hook, kid. and another...

106 RIYank   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:37 pm

Oh, nice finish. Supernova tonight. If only he'd been a little more efficient, he could have had one of his best games ever.

107 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 9:38 pm

yeah!

10 k's for bossa novacaine!

nice easy inning and he's through 6. 111 pitches and he's done for the night.

[33 randym77 ] I am a sucker for Pittsburgh and always rooted for big lug AJ. I read this today in the post-gazette. http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/sports/pirates/aj-burnett-makes-his-mark-643739/

145 thelarmis   ~  Jul 8, 2012 11:12 pm

the untucking was delayed. hmmm, perhaps 'coz it wasn't a save situation...

in any case, we took 3 of 4 at the fens and led in the game we lost.

boston is a .500 club at the break and we're 10 games ahead of them (in the loss column).

enjoy the break!
