Win One, Lose One

Ivan Nova was good today as the Yanks zipped to a 5-2 on the strength of Casey McGehee’s three-run home run. Here’s the recap by David Waldstein in the Times.

After the game, the team placed C.C. Sabathia on the 15-day DL with a sore elbow. “As for our concern,” said manager Joe Girardi, “it’s pretty low-level.” That takes C.C. out of the Texas and Boston series but Yanks are thinking big picture, of course.

Bummer but sounds like it could have been much worse.

Young Will Middlebrooks down for the season with a fractured wrist. (Hit with a fastball.)
Valentine seemed genuinely upset -- I think he and Middlebrooks had developed a relationship.

I'm now feeling sorry for Bobby Valentine! Wow, I definitely did not expect that to happen.

How is it possible for a 3Bman to get a fractured wrist, by getting hit with a pitch?

Yanks got Derek Lowe.

Screw Lowe. Here's CC's replacement.

[3] Just saw that. But it looks like Phelps will start and Lowe will be the long man! Surprising. (That's the LoHud speculation, anyway.)

[5] From ESPN:
The 39-year-old righthander [Lowe] was designated for assignment by the Cleveland Indians on Saturday. His deal with the Yankees will not be finished until Monday, and he is expected to pitch out of the bullpen while Sabathia, who will be out of action at least until Aug. 24, is recovering.

D. Lowe, whadda ya know?

[5] I hope Phelps gets the nod, he's earned it.

stunning how low Derek has fallen, to be released by a team 9 games under .500.

The Red Sox are getting their shit handed to them by Brent Lillibridge. He's the utility player they got in the Youkalis deal and then traded to the Indians for some other nobody. And he's just destroying them. They would really love to have him back now, because, you know, they kind of need a 3Bman.

Salt in the wounds.

[9] Ain't that a shame. At least we've got Eric Chavez.

[10] Chavez, Ibañez, Ichiro, total cost < $5M. Good job, Cash. If McGehee and Lowe contribute any value, that's icing.

not for nothin', but...

we have the best record in the AL.

our offense has scored the same amount of runs as the vaunted shit sox, in two fewer games.

we have a +100 run diff, also best in the junior circuit.

we're also the only team in major league that has derek lowe! ; )

[12] Os are losing right now too. if that holds we pick up another half game on them. that lead on thema nd the rays can't be big enough for my tastes.

[13] i'm with ya, buddy!

though, really it's just tampon...ball-tumor's gonna fade back to the pack...

The Orioles' run differential is –49, which makes it hard to get too worried that they're going to go on a tear.

The Yankees have the highest run diff. in either league, although the Nationals' is more impressive (because it's in a lower run-scoring environment). The Nats have to be the favorites to win it all this year. Amazing!
